Name Change in Uttarakhand
Change your name legally from anywhere in Uttarakhand, from Dehradun to Pithoragarh, without standing in a single queue. We draft the affidavit, book the newspaper notice, file the Gazette notification and hand you the published PDF.
A legal name change in Uttarakhand takes three steps: a notarised affidavit, a notice in a daily newspaper that circulates where you live, and a Gazette notification. Most people from Uttarakhand file the Central Gazette, where the Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, and publication usually takes 30 to 45 days. An affidavit on its own is not proof.
Most people searching for a name change in Uttarakhand have already tried once. They made an affidavit at the district court, carried it to the bank in Dehradun or to the Aadhaar centre in Haldwani, and were told it is not enough. That wasted trip is the most common part of this whole process, and it happens for one reason: the affidavit starts the change, it does not finish it.
A Gazette notification is a formal announcement of your name change printed in an official journal of the Government. It is either the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Delhi, or the Uttarakhand Gazette, printed by the Government Press at Roorkee. Once it carries a page number and a date, it becomes the document that Aadhaar, PAN, passport, banks, schools and employers accept as the legal record of your new name.
There is something fitting about this page existing at all. Uttarakhand itself changed its name. The state was created on 9 November 2000 out of Uttar Pradesh, and it was called Uttaranchal for the first six years. On 1 January 2007 it became Uttarakhand, the name the hills had always used. If a whole state can correct its name on the record, so can you.

Key takeaways for Uttarakhand applicants
- Check first whether you need a Gazette at all. Six kinds of Aadhaar name update do not need one.
- The affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette are three separate steps. Skipping one causes a rejection later.
- The Central Gazette is accepted everywhere in India and by foreign missions. Take it if a passport, a visa or a central Government job is coming.
- There is exactly one Central Gazette office and it is in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. No office in Dehradun carries that pin code.
- The Uttarakhand Gazette is printed at Roorkee and has its own live portal, gazettes.uk.gov.in, where any published gazette can be searched and downloaded free.
- The Gazette fee is non-refundable, so one wrong letter costs you the full fee again.
- A spelling mistake in a birth certificate is a Registrar correction, not a Gazette job.
- After publication, update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then bank, then passport.
Six Cases Where Uttarakhand Residents Do Not Need a Gazette
Read this before you spend anything. The Aadhaar standard operating procedure of 28 October 2021 allows six kinds of name update without any Gazette notification.
Typographical mistakes
A letter typed wrongly by the operator, such as Rajesh entered as Rajseh. This is an error correction, not a name change.
Transliteration errors
The same name written differently when moved from Hindi to English, such as Bisht and Bist, or Negi and Nagi.
Regional language updates
Adding or correcting the Hindi spelling of a name that is already correct in English, or the reverse.
Marriage, divorce or adoption
A surname change supported by a registered marriage certificate, a decree of divorce, or an adoption deed.
Adding or editing initials
Turning S. Rawat into Suresh Rawat, or shortening a long name to an initial, where the name itself is unchanged.
Change in name sequence
Reordering the parts of the same name, such as moving a surname from the front to the end.
Common Reasons for a Name Change in Uttarakhand
These are the cases that come to our desk from Uttarakhand week after week.
Surname change after marriage
The most common request by far. Often the registered marriage certificate is enough and no gazette is needed, so ask before you pay.
Wrong spelling since school
A spelling entered wrongly in class 1 that has followed the person through every document since. Bisht written as Bist, Negi as Nagi.
Mismatch between documents
The school certificate says one name, Aadhaar says another, and a bank or an employer has refused the file until the two agree.
Changing a child's name
Parents who registered a birth quickly and chose the final name later, or who want the name on the school record to match the birth certificate.
Job or study outside the state
A central Government job, a bank posting or a university outside Uttarakhand where the old name creates a verification problem.
Passport and visa
Passport Seva asks for the gazette when a name changes. This is the case where a Central Gazette is worth the extra cost every time.
Adding or dropping a surname
Adding a family surname that was never recorded, or dropping one. Also reordering the parts of the same name.
Going back to a maiden name
After a divorce, usually with the certified decree as the main proof and the gazette as the fallback where an office refuses the decree.
Personal or religious reasons
A numerology change, a spiritual name, or a name a person has used for years without it ever reaching their records.
Who Can Apply for a Name Change in Uttarakhand?
The rules are simple, and there are fewer conditions than most people expect.
You can apply if
- You are an Indian citizen. Living in Uttarakhand is not a condition for the Central Gazette
- You are 18 or above and applying for yourself
- You are a parent or legal guardian applying for a child under 18
- You are an Indian living abroad, at the higher fee of Rs 3,500
- You have a photo identity document in the old name and a witness willing to sign
- You have already changed your name once before. There is no legal limit on how many times
Points people get wrong
- You do not need a court order. A name change is an administrative process, not a court case
- You do not need a lawyer. You need a notary for the affidavit
- You do not need a domicile or residence certificate of Uttarakhand for the Central route
- You do not need to be present in Delhi. The file goes by post or courier
- An agent cannot submit the application for you. It goes in from the applicant
- Your documents must not be older than one year, and documents once submitted are never returned
Uttarakhand Gazette or Central Gazette, Which One Do You Need?
This is the first real decision, and picking wrong is expensive, because the Government fee is not refunded.
India runs two parallel routes. The Central Gazette is the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Personal name change notices appear in Part IV, and the published copy is downloaded free from egazette.gov.in.
The Uttarakhand Gazette is printed by the Government Press at Roorkee, which works under the Directorate of Printing and Stationery. It has its own live portal at gazettes.uk.gov.in. Most name change pages about Uttarakhand never mention this portal, so here is what is actually on it.
How the Uttarakhand Gazette is organised
- Two series, a Daily gazette and a Weekly gazette
- Divided into Bhag 1 to Bhag 8, which is the state equivalent of the Central Gazette's Part numbers
- The portal's own category list includes Name-Change and Public Notice, alongside Government categories such as Notification, Transfer and Promotion
- Published gazettes are searchable by department, section, category, Bhag, GO number and date
What you can do on the portal yourself
- Search any published Uttarakhand gazette free of cost
- Download the PDF copy free, the same way egazette.gov.in works for the Central Gazette
- Check the Bhag and page number of a gazette somebody has quoted to you
- Confirm a gazette is real before you accept it as proof from anyone
The practical test is simple. Ask where the new name has to be accepted. If the answer includes a passport, a visa, a central Government job, an armed forces or paramilitary record, a bank with branches outside the state, or any plan to move out of Uttarakhand later, take the Central route. If every record you own stays inside Uttarakhand, ask the Roorkee press directly what is open to a private applicant this month before you pay anything.
| Point of comparison | Central Gazette of India | Uttarakhand Gazette |
|---|---|---|

| Accepted | Everywhere in India and by foreign missions | Reliably inside Uttarakhand, sometimes questioned outside it |

| Payment | BharatKosh, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, only | State treasury challan or the state portal |
| Publication time | Commonly 30 to 45 days | Varies, and depends on the press workload that month |

| Best for | Passport, visa, central jobs, banking, anything national | State jobs, state board records, local land and revenue records |
Name Change Procedure in Uttarakhand: The Three Legal Steps
Every genuine name change follows this order. Nobody can skip a step on your behalf.
The affidavit
An affidavit is prepared on non-judicial stamp paper stating your old name, your new name, your address in Uttarakhand, your father's or husband's name and the reason for the change. You sign it before a notary public with a witness present. The spelling here must match exactly what you want printed in the Gazette.
The newspaper notice
The change is published in a daily newspaper circulating where you live. Keep the complete original printed page including the masthead and the date, not a cutting, because the Gazette office checks the page header. In practice we place the notice in two papers, one local and one national, to keep the file safe.
The Gazette notification
The complete file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi for the Central Gazette, or to the Government Press at Roorkee for the state route. The Central fee is paid only through BharatKosh. Once printed, you download the PDF, and that PDF is your legal proof.
Step 1 in detail: getting the affidavit right in Uttarakhand
The affidavit is short, but everything else copies from it. If your new name is spelt Aarav in the affidavit and Arav in the newspaper, the file comes back. Notaries sit at every district court in Uttarakhand, including the Dehradun District Court on Haridwar Road near Prince Chowk, where our associate office is. We type the affidavit, read it back to you letter by letter, and only then arrange notarisation. For a minor, both parents sign. For a surname change after marriage, the affidavit names the maiden name, the married name and the date of marriage.
Step 2 in detail: the newspaper notice
The Department of Publication guidelines for a simple adult name change ask for one daily local leading newspaper, with no restriction on language. In real filing practice we place the notice in two papers, one local Hindi daily read in your district and one national English daily, because a second notice costs a few hundred rupees while a returned file costs six weeks and a fee that is never refunded. The notice carries your old name, your new name, your address and the affidavit date.
Step 3 in detail: filing the Gazette
The Central Gazette file needs the original newspaper page, an undertaking, two copies of the prescribed form, a soft copy of the notice text, self-attested identity proof for you and for your witness, two passport size photographs and a request letter. Documents must not be older than one year, and documents once submitted are never returned. The fee is paid only through BharatKosh, since direct bank transfers were discontinued. Personal notices are printed in Part IV, published weekly on a Saturday, and the PDF is free from egazette.gov.in.
Documents Required for Name Change in Uttarakhand
Send clear scans. Photographs of documents taken at an angle are the second most common reason for delay.
For an adult applicant
- Photo identity proof in the old name: Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or Passport
- Address proof showing your Uttarakhand address, which can be the same Aadhaar
- Two recent passport size photographs
- Self-attested photocopy of one witness identity proof
- Marriage certificate, if the change is a surname change after marriage
- Decree of divorce, if you are going back to a maiden name
- The notarised affidavit and the original newspaper page
For a minor under 18
- The child's birth certificate
- School record or bonafide certificate from the school in Uttarakhand
- Aadhaar of the child, if issued
- Photo identity and address proof of both parents or the legal guardian
- Two passport size photographs of the child
- Affidavit signed by both parents or by the guardian
- Guardianship or custody order, where only one parent applies
Name Change Fees in Uttarakhand, Explained Honestly
Government fees and market costs are two different things. Here is both, kept separate.
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central Gazette fee, adult | Rs 1,100 | Paid through BharatKosh. The Department of Publication states the fee is revised each financial year, so confirm it on the day you file. |
| Central Gazette fee, minor | Rs 1,700 | Applies to anyone under 18. Also paid through BharatKosh. |
| Public notice gazette | Rs 1,350 | Used where a name of another religion is adopted without changing religion, with an undertaking. |
| Each additional alias name | Rs 250 | Added on top where more than one name is being notified. |
| Stamp paper and notary | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp paper value differs by state and by the notary you use. |
| Newspaper notice | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The widest variable. A Hindi daily in Almora costs far less than a national English daily in Dehradun. |
| Applying from abroad | Rs 3,500 | The Central Gazette rate for Indians living outside India. |
| Realistic self-done total | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 | Everything above added together, not counting travel or a repeat trip. |
| Our assistance | Quoted per case | Charged separately from Government fees. Call 9540005026 for a fixed quote before you commit. |
Be careful with advertisements offering a "gazette name change at Rs 999" in Dehradun or Haldwani. The Central Gazette Government fee alone is more than that, so a price below the Government fee means either a state gazette you may not want, or an affidavit dressed up as a Gazette. Ask any provider two questions: which Gazette, and does the price include the Government fee.
How Long Does a Name Change Take in Uttarakhand?
Realistic timings, not the best case that almost nobody gets.
Day 1 to 2
Documents collected, affidavit drafted, spelling confirmed with you in writing, notarisation arranged at your district court.
Day 3 to 7
Notice booked in a daily that circulates in your district. Original full page collected and checked.
Day 7 to 10
Gazette file assembled, fee paid through BharatKosh, application sent and acknowledged.
Day 30 to 45
Notification printed in Part IV. We download the PDF from the e-Gazette portal and send it with the update checklist.
Total for the Central route is commonly 3 to 7 weeks end to end. Add a few days in the hill districts, where a courier to Dehradun or Delhi takes longer from Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh or Chamoli than it does from Haridwar. Anyone promising a Central Gazette in 3 days is describing an affidavit, not a Gazette.
Name Change in All 13 Districts of Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has 13 districts across two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon. The state has had the same 13 since it was created in 2000. Here is where each one sits and where your notary and newspaper will be.
| District | Division | Headquarters |
|---|---|---|
| Dehradun | Garhwal | Dehradun, also the state capital and our associate office |
| Haridwar | Garhwal | Roshnabad, and the Government Press is at Roorkee in this district |
| Pauri Garhwal | Garhwal | Pauri |
| Rudraprayag | Garhwal | Rudraprayag |
| Tehri Garhwal | Garhwal | Tehri, with most offices at New Tehri |
| Chamoli | Garhwal | Gopeshwar |
| Uttarkashi | Garhwal | Uttarkashi |
| Nainital | Kumaon | Nainital, with Haldwani the largest town |
| Udham Singh Nagar | Kumaon | Rudrapur |
| Almora | Kumaon | Almora |
| Bageshwar | Kumaon | Bageshwar |
| Champawat | Kumaon | Champawat |
| Pithoragarh | Kumaon | Pithoragarh |
Cities and Towns We Cover Across Uttarakhand
The file is prepared online and the Central Gazette is filed in Delhi, so where you live does not limit you. Send scans from any of these and we will handle the rest.
Living outside India but from Uttarakhand? The Central Gazette accepts applications from Indians abroad at Rs 3,500. Call us before you start so the paperwork is prepared in the right form.
Our Dehradun Associate Office and Delhi Gazette Filing Desk
Two offices, one file. The Uttarakhand office is where you meet us. The Delhi desk is where the Central Gazette work is done, because that is where the only Central Gazette office is.
Associate office, Dehradun
Dehradun District Court, 47/9, Haridwar Road, Near Prince Chowk, Court Road, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, 248001
This is where affidavits are drafted and notarised for clients who prefer to come in person. Prince Chowk is central, so it is reachable from Clement Town, Rajpur Road, Clock Tower and the ISBT side of the city.
Head office, gazette filing desk, Delhi
Metro Pillar No. 377, Near Burari Metro Station, Shop No. B-1, Ground Floor, Gali No. 1, Khasra No. 31/12, Hardev Nagar, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Delhi 110084
Central Gazette files are assembled and checked here before they go to the Department of Publication at Civil Lines. You never need to come to Delhi yourself.
Update Your Records in This Order After the Gazette
Doing this in the wrong order is what turns a four week job into a four month one.
| Order | Record | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Almost every other service verifies against Aadhaar. Update it first at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the Gazette, affidavit and newspaper page. The address on your Gazette should match your Aadhaar address. |
| 2 | PAN card | The correction form asks for proof, and an updated Aadhaar makes this straightforward. Never apply for a second PAN, as that carries a penalty of Rs 10,000 under Section 272B. |
| 3 | Bank accounts | Banks check the PAN and Aadhaar pair. Updating the bank before both are done causes a mismatch. |
| 4 | Passport | A change of name is a re-issue, so you get a new passport number and old visas do not carry over. Plan this before you book travel. |
| 5 | Voter ID and driving licence | Straightforward once Aadhaar carries the new name. Voter ID correction through Form 8 is free. |
| 6 | EPFO, UAN and insurance | Employer-linked records. Your human resources department usually needs the Gazette on file first. |
| 7 | School, board and university records | Slowest of the lot. Uttarakhand Board, CBSE and each university run their own correction form and fee. |
| 8 | Property, GST and business records | Handle last, once the identity documents all agree with each other. |
A Birth Certificate Mistake in Uttarakhand Is Not a Gazette Job
This is the single most common thing people are sold wrongly. If your birth certificate has a spelling mistake, a wrong parent's name or a wrong date, that is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. It is handled by the municipal body, nagar palika or registrar that issued the certificate, whether that is Dehradun Nagar Nigam, Haldwani Nagar Nigam or the panchayat office in your block.
The correction is made as a margin entry. The original entry in the register is never altered or erased, and a fresh certificate is issued showing the corrected particulars. A Gazette notification will not touch the birth register at all. The two documents live in different systems. If someone quotes you a Gazette price to correct a birth certificate, they are either confused or selling you something you do not need.
Correcting a name on an Uttarakhand Board certificate
If the wrong name is on a class 10 or class 12 certificate from the Uttarakhand Board of School Education, that is a board correction, not a gazette job. The board runs its own correction form and its own fee, and the application goes through your school, which forwards it with the original records. The gazette supports that application as proof of the new name, but it does not replace the board's own process.
Do them in the right order. Get the gazette published first, then apply to the board with the gazette, the affidavit and the newspaper page attached. Applying to the board first usually means doing the whole thing twice.
Marriage, Divorce and Children in Uttarakhand
Surname change after marriage
A registered marriage certificate showing both the maiden name and the married name is usually enough, and a Gazette is generally not required. Where a Gazette is genuinely needed, the affidavit names the maiden name, the married name and the date of marriage, and the certificate is attached as supporting proof.
Going back to a maiden name
After a divorce, the certified decree is the standard proof and a Gazette is the fallback where an office refuses the decree. The affidavit states that you are resuming the name you used before marriage. The court does not do this step for you.
Changing a child's name
For anyone under 18, both parents or the legal guardian apply on the child's behalf, and the minor fee of Rs 1,700 applies. The birth certificate and the school record are usually needed. Where only one parent signs, a custody or guardianship order is required.
Why Name Change Applications From Uttarakhand Get Rejected
Every one of these is avoidable, and every one of them costs the fee again.
Document problems
- Spelling differs between the affidavit, the newspaper and the form
- A newspaper cutting sent instead of the complete original page
- Supporting documents older than one year
- Identity proof that is blurred, cropped or photographed at an angle
- Witness identity proof missing or not self-attested
- Photographs that are not passport size or not recent
Process problems
- Stopping at the affidavit and assuming the change is done
- Paying outside BharatKosh, since direct transfers were discontinued
- Posting originals to an address copied from an unofficial website
- Choosing a state gazette when a passport application is coming next
- Only one parent signing for a minor without a custody order
- Updating the bank before Aadhaar and PAN agree with each other
Should You Do the Name Change Yourself or Use a Service?
We will say it plainly: some people should do this themselves.
| Point of comparison | Doing it yourself | Using us |
|---|---|---|
| Money out | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 if nothing goes wrong | Government fee plus a quoted service charge |
| Your time | Several days across the notary, the newspaper office and the courier | About 30 minutes of sending scans and confirming spelling |
| Travel | Local travel in your district, plus a courier to Delhi | None |
| Risk of paying twice | Real, because the fee is non-refundable and small errors are common | We check the spelling with you in writing before anything prints |
| Best if | You live near Dehradun or Haridwar, have time, and are comfortable with Government forms | You are in a hill district, working, or the case has any complication in it |
If you are patient and your case is a plain adult name change with no marriage, divorce, minor or service record angle, you can do this yourself. Read this page, follow the order, and you will be fine. If any part of it worries you, call us and we will quote you a fixed price.
Why Uttarakhand Families Trust Us With Their Documents
A name change means handing your identity documents to someone you have never met. We take that seriously, and we would rather be slow and correct than fast and wrong.
Your documents stay private
Your scans go to one advisor and one file. We do not resell your details, we do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not share your papers with anyone outside your case.
Nothing prints without your written yes
We send you the exact wording, letter by letter, and wait for your confirmation before the affidavit is typed or the notice is booked. The fee is non-refundable, so this step protects your money.
Government fee shown separately
Our charge and the Government fee are always quoted as two lines. You see exactly how much reaches the Government and how much is for our work, before you pay anything.
One advisor, start to finish
The same person handles your file from the first scan to the published PDF, on the same number you first called. You never repeat your case to somebody new.
We tell you when you do not need us
If your case is a Registrar correction or an Aadhaar update that needs no Gazette, we say so and point you to the right office. We would rather lose the job than sell you the wrong one.
We know the Uttarakhand file
Which daily is sensible in Kumaon and which in Garhwal, how long a courier takes from a hill district, and what the Roorkee press does and does not handle for private applicants.
How Our Uttarakhand Name Change Service Works
Booking with us is as easy as 1-2-3. Sit back and let the desk do the work.
Book
Call, WhatsApp or fill the form. Tell us your old name, your new name and your district, and send clear scans of your documents. It takes about ten minutes.

Uttarakhand Name Change Questions Google Gets Asked Most
Why was Uttaranchal renamed Uttarakhand?
The state was created on 9 November 2000 and was first called Uttaranchal. On 1 January 2007 it was renamed Uttarakhand, which is the older name the hill region had always used for itself. That was a change of a state's name by law. It has nothing to do with changing your own name, and it does not give you any shortcut. Your personal name change still needs an affidavit, a newspaper notice and a gazette notification.
The Uttarakhand Government renamed 18 places. Does that affect my documents?
No. On 1 April 2025 the Chief Minister announced new names for 18 places across Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts. That changes the name of a place, not the name of a person. If your address proof shows an old place name, keep using the document as it is and update it at the next renewal. You do not need a gazette for a place that was renamed by the Government.
Where is the gazette office in Uttarakhand?
The Uttarakhand Gazette is printed by the Government Press at Ramnagar Industrial Estate, Roorkee 247667, in Haridwar district, under the Directorate of Printing and Stationery. There is no Central Gazette office anywhere in Uttarakhand. The only Central Gazette office in the country is the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Is a name change legal without a Gazette in Uttarakhand?
You may use any name socially, but Government records need proof. For a genuine change of name, Aadhaar, PAN and the passport office ask for the Gazette notification. For a small correction or a marriage-related surname change, other proof is often enough, which is why the first question is always whether you need a Gazette at all.
Can I apply for the Uttarakhand gazette online?
The Central Gazette fee is paid online through BharatKosh and the published notification is downloaded free from egazette.gov.in. The application itself still goes in physically, by the applicant in person or by post. For the state route, check the current position with the Roorkee press before you assume an online option exists.
Which newspaper should I use for a name change notice in Uttarakhand?
A daily newspaper that actually circulates in your district. The Department of Publication guidelines for a simple adult name change ask for one daily local leading newspaper with no language restriction. In practice we place the notice in two papers, one local Hindi daily and one national English daily, so the file cannot be questioned later.
How much does a gazette name change cost in Dehradun?
The Government fee is the same wherever you live in India: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid through BharatKosh, revised each financial year. What changes by city is the newspaper rate and the notary charge. A realistic self-done total is Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000.
Do I need to visit Delhi to file the Central Gazette?
No. The application may be sent by post or courier. We assemble and check the complete file at our Delhi desk, and you sign and send it. No agent can submit an application on your behalf, so anybody promising to hand it in for you is describing something the rules do not permit.
How long is a Gazette notification valid for?
Forever. A published notification does not expire and does not need renewal. It stays in the Gazette record permanently, and the same PDF can be downloaded again years later from the e-Gazette portal. Note down the page number and the publication date so you can find it quickly.
Can I change my name more than once?
Yes. There is no legal limit, and each change follows the same three steps and the same fee. Keep every Gazette you have ever been issued, because repeated changes attract questions during passport and background verification. Aadhaar, separately, allows a name change twice in a lifetime.
What is the difference between a name change and a name correction?
A change replaces one name with a different one and needs the Gazette. A correction fixes an error in an existing record, such as a misspelling in a birth certificate or a mark sheet, and goes through the office that issued that record. Some cases need both, and they are quoted separately.
Does a name change affect my bank loan or credit record?
The change itself does not. Problems come from an incomplete update, where the bank has the new name and the credit bureau still has the old one. Update Aadhaar and PAN first, then tell every bank and lender in the same week.

Name Change in Uttarakhand: The Short Version
Everything on this page in ten lines
- First check whether you need a Gazette at all. Six kinds of Aadhaar name update, including a registered marriage, do not need one.
- A real name change in Uttarakhand is three steps: affidavit, newspaper notice, Gazette notification.
- The affidavit alone is not proof. Aadhaar, PAN and the passport office all ask for the Gazette.
- The Central Gazette works everywhere in India. The Uttarakhand Gazette runs Daily and Weekly series in Bhag 1 to Bhag 8 and is fine for records that stay inside the state.
- The Central fee is commonly Rs 1,100 adult and Rs 1,700 minor, Rs 3,500 from abroad, paid only on BharatKosh, and revised each financial year.
- Publication commonly takes 30 to 45 days, so plan for 3 to 7 weeks end to end.
- Personal notices appear in Part IV of the Gazette of India, and the PDF is free from egazette.gov.in.
- There is one Central Gazette office, in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. No Dehradun office carries that pin code.
- The fee is non-refundable and no agent may submit for you, so confirm the spelling in writing before anything is printed.
- A birth certificate mistake is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969, not a Gazette. After publication, update Aadhaar first, then PAN, then bank, then passport.
