Name Mismatch in CIBIL Credit Report in Uttarakhand
When a credit report shows your name wrongly, or shows someone else's loan under yours: where the report takes a name from, how a dispute works, the thirty day rule, and what a change of name does to your credit history.
A name mismatch in CIBIL credit report records is corrected by a dispute, not by a Gazette. The credit bureau prints what lenders report, so the lender has to send the corrected name. As reported, the Reserve Bank gives thirty days for a complaint to be resolved, with compensation of Rs 100 a day after that.

A name mismatch in CIBIL credit report records is usually found by a loan officer, who tells an applicant that the report "does not match" or carries a loan the applicant never took. This page explains name mismatch in CIBIL credit report records for borrowers in Uttarakhand: where the name comes from, how to dispute it, and what to expect.
We do not deal with credit bureaus or lenders, and nothing here needs a Gazette unless you have in fact changed your name. For the bank's own record, which is where the report's name starts, read name change in bank records in Uttarakhand.
What Are the Bureaus and the Report?
A credit information company, or credit bureau, collects from banks and other lenders the record of every loan and credit card a person has, and how it has been repaid. It sells lenders a report and a score built from that record.
- There are four such companies licensed in India. People say "CIBIL" for all of them, after the oldest.
- Each holds its own file on you. A mistake may be in one and not the others.
- They work under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 and the Reserve Bank of India's directions.
- As reported, each has to give a person one free full credit report a year, on request.
A report has two parts that matter here. The first is personal information: your name, date of birth, gender, PAN and other identity numbers, addresses and telephone numbers. The second is the list of accounts. A name problem can sit in either.
Where Does the Name on a Credit Report Come From?
From your lenders. A bureau does not ask you for your name and does not check it against Aadhaar or PAN records for itself.
- You apply for a loan or a card. The lender records your name from the application and identity papers.
- The lender reports the account to the bureaus, at regular intervals, with your name, date of birth, PAN and address as it holds them.
- The bureau matches each reported account to a person, using the PAN and other identifiers, with the name and date of birth.
- The report shows the name as reported. Where lenders have sent different spellings over the years, they may all appear.
So the name on a report is only as right as each lender's own record. A bureau, as guides on the Reserve Bank's directions put it, relies on the lender and cannot change a lender's data on its own. That shapes everything below: the fix has to pass through the lender.
What Are the Three Kinds of Name Problem?
| Kind | What you see | How serious | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| A spelling or form of your name | A misspelling, a missing surname, an old name | Mild. The accounts are yours | Correct it at the lender, or dispute the personal details |
| A mixed file | A loan or card that is not yours, from a person with a similar name | Serious. It lowers your score and can show a default | Dispute the ownership of that account |
| No report found, or two files | The lender cannot find your history, or finds only part | Costly at loan time | Align PAN, name and date of birth across lenders, then dispute |
The first is cosmetic. Lenders match mainly on PAN and date of birth, and several spellings of one name on a report do no harm by themselves. The second and third affect whether you get a loan, and deserve prompt attention.
What Is the Thirty Day Rule?
The Reserve Bank issued a framework on complaints about credit information in late 2023, and has since carried it into its directions on credit information. These points are as reported.
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| Time to resolve | Thirty calendar days from the day the complaint is first filed with the lender or the bureau |
| How the time is shared | Twenty-one days for the lender to send corrected information, and the rest for the bureau |
| Compensation | Rs 100 for each calendar day beyond thirty, payable by whichever of the two caused the delay |
| Payment | Credited to the complainant's bank account within five working days of resolution |
| A rejected request | The lender has to tell the customer the reasons for rejecting a correction |
| Several lenders | Where more than one lender's data is wrong, the complaint is made to the bureau, which coordinates with them |
The rule gives a complaint a clock. It does not decide the complaint. If the lender confirms its data is right, the entry stays, and the borrower's next step is the lender's own grievance process.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| One lender has misspelt your name | Correct the name at that lender. It then reports the corrected name | No |
| The report shows two or three spellings of your name | Usually leave it. Make sure each live lender has the right one | No |
| Your PAN on the report is wrong by a digit | Dispute at once. A wrong PAN is how files get mixed | No |
| A loan that is not yours appears | Dispute the ownership of that account, with the bureau | No |
| A lender says it cannot find your report | Ask what details it searched with. Align them with your PAN | No |
| You have married and changed your surname | Update PAN and each lender. The history stays on your PAN | No |
| You have changed your name by choice | Gazette, then PAN and Aadhaar, then each lender | Yes, for PAN and Aadhaar |
Only the last row touches a Gazette, and there it is PAN and Aadhaar that need it, not the bureau.
How Do You Raise a Dispute?
Step 1: Get your own report
From the bureau's own website, using the free yearly report. Get it from each of the four if a loan is at stake.
Step 2: Read the personal information first
Name, date of birth, PAN, addresses and telephone numbers. Mark anything that is not yours.
Step 3: Read every account
The lender, the kind of loan, the date opened and the amount. Mark any you do not recognise.
Step 4: Decide where to complain
One lender's mistake: that lender, or the bureau. Several lenders, or an account that is not yours: the bureau.
Step 5: File the dispute online on the bureau's website
Choose the item, say what is wrong and what is right, and upload proof. Note the date and the reference number.
Step 6: Write to the lender as well
With your identity papers, asking it to correct its record and report the correction. Take an acknowledgement.
Step 7: Count thirty days from the first filing
Keep the dated proof. The compensation runs from that day.
Step 8: Get a fresh report and check it
See that the correction has been made, and check the other bureaus too.
Deal only with the bureaus' own websites and your lenders. No agent can remove a true entry, and anyone who offers to "clean" a report for a fee is selling something that does not exist.
What If Someone Else's Loan Is on Your Report?
Common names make this likely. Two people called Rajesh Singh Rawat, born in the same year, with a lender that mistyped one digit of a PAN, can end up in one file.
- Check the account's details. The lender, the date and the amount. Be sure it is not an old card or a loan you guaranteed and forgot.
- Dispute the ownership of the account with the bureau, saying plainly that it does not belong to you.
- Write to the lender named, with your PAN and identity papers, asking it to confirm that you are not its borrower and to correct what it reports.
- Ask the lender for a letter that the account is not yours. It is useful with other lenders meanwhile.
- If the loan was taken by someone using your papers, that is not a mix-up. It is fraud. Make a police complaint, and report it on the national cybercrime portal, as well as disputing it.
A mixed file is not cured by changing your name. Two people can share a name. What separates them is PAN, date of birth and address. Make sure every one of your lenders has those right.
What Happens to Your Credit History After a Change of Name?
It stays with you. A credit file is tied to your PAN and other identifiers, not to the spelling of your name.
- Keep the same PAN. Have the name on it updated. Never apply for a fresh PAN in a new name. Holding two is against the law and attracts a penalty, and it would split your history.
- Update each lender. Every bank, card issuer and finance company you have an account with, on the marriage certificate or the Gazette notification. Each then reports the new name.
- Expect both names on the report for a time. Old closed accounts stay in the name they were reported in. That is normal.
- A new lender will search with your new name and your PAN, and should find the full history. If it does not, ask what it searched with.
A woman who takes a married surname loses nothing of her credit history by doing so, provided she keeps her PAN and updates it. See name change in PAN card in Uttarakhand.
What If You Are in the Middle of a Loan Application?
- Ask the loan officer exactly what the problem is: a name that differs, an account that is not yours, or no report found.
- Give the lender, in writing, the explanation and the proof: your PAN, your identity papers and, for a changed name, the marriage certificate or Gazette notification.
- For an account that is not yours, give the reference number of your dispute and any letter from the other lender.
- A lender can use its judgment while a dispute is pending. Some will go ahead on a clear explanation. Ask.
- Where the property or income papers are in a different form of your name, that is a separate mismatch for the lender to be satisfied about.
A dispute takes up to thirty days. If a sanction is time-bound, tell the lender at the start and ask for the time to be extended in writing.
What If Thirty Days Pass?
- Write to the bureau and the lender, quoting the date of your first complaint, and ask for the status and for the compensation due.
- Ask for the reason in writing, if the correction is refused. The lender has to give its reasons.
- Use the grievance officer of the lender and of the bureau. Each publishes the name and address.
- Complain to the Reserve Bank's ombudsman, online. The scheme covers credit information companies as well as banks and finance companies, and it is free.
- Take a lawyer's advice where a wrong entry has cost you a loan and nobody will correct it.
Keep every date. The framework's compensation is counted in days from the first filing, and the ombudsman will want the trail.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?
Only where you have changed your name by choice. A credit bureau does not ask for a Gazette. PAN and Aadhaar do, for a major change, and your lenders then follow those.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a misspelling or a mixed file
Those are disputes. A Gazette does nothing for them.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The same spelling for PAN, Aadhaar and every lender.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update PAN and each lender
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar and PAN, then every lender, and check your report some weeks later.
Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?
Not to a credit bureau. The question is only which Gazette PAN, Aadhaar and your lenders accept. Those are national bodies.
Step 1: Ask your main lender which Gazette it accepts
The Reserve Bank's rule says Gazette notification, without naming one.
Step 2: Think about PAN and the passport
For those, the Gazette of India is the safer choice.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Borrowers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Getting a Gazette to fix a credit report | Raise a dispute. A Gazette does not correct a lender's data |
| Paying a "credit repair" agent | Dispute it yourself, free, on the bureau's website |
| Applying for a second PAN in a new name | Update the one you have. Holding two is against the law |
| Disputing only with the bureau, and never telling the lender | Write to the lender too. It holds the data |
| Worrying about several spellings of your own name | Check PAN and date of birth. Those are what match |
| Ignoring an account you do not recognise | Dispute its ownership at once |
| Checking only one bureau | Check all four before a loan |
| Keeping no dates | Note the day of the first filing |
| Looking at the report for the first time during a loan | Take the free report every year |
A typical case we handle: a contractor in Rudrapur was refused a vehicle loan because his report showed an unpaid personal loan from a lender he had never dealt with. A broker told him to change the spelling of his name by Gazette so that his file would be "fresh". We told him that would not work, since his history is on his PAN, and could look like evasion. He disputed the ownership of the account with the bureau, wrote to the lender named, and the entry was taken off his file within the month. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
What is a lawyer's job, not ours
A loan taken by fraud in your name, a lender that will not correct a wrong entry, and a claim for loss caused by one.

People Also Ask About a Name on a Credit Report
How do I correct my name in my CIBIL report?
Correct it at the lender that reported it, or raise a dispute on the bureau's website.
Does a spelling mistake in my name affect my CIBIL score?
Not by itself. Lenders match mainly on PAN and date of birth.
Someone else's loan is showing in my CIBIL report. What do I do?
Dispute the ownership of that account with the bureau, and write to the lender.
Will I lose my credit history if I change my name?
No. It stays on your PAN. Update the PAN and each lender.
How long does a credit report correction take?
As reported, thirty days, with Rs 100 a day in compensation after that.
Is a gazette needed to correct a CIBIL report?
No. A dispute corrects a report.
How soon does a corrected name reach my credit report?
Lenders now report to the bureaus every fortnight, as on the 15th and the last day of the month, within seven days, under a rule in force from 1 January 2025. So a correction made at the lender should reach the report within weeks.
Will I be told when someone checks my credit report?
Yes. The Reserve Bank's Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025 require bureaus to send an SMS or email when your report is accessed, where your mobile number or email is on record. An alert you did not expect can be the first sign of a loan in your name.
Does every bank report to all four credit bureaus?
Under the 2025 directions, banks, NBFCs and other credit institutions have to be members of all four credit information companies and report to each. That is why a wrong name can appear on every bureau's report at once.
Which rules govern credit reports now?
The Master Direction on Credit Information Reporting, dated 6 January 2025, issued under section 11 of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005. It brings the earlier instructions together.
Will reporting become weekly?
In September 2025 the Reserve Bank proposed weekly incremental reporting and a separate field for the CKYC number in the reporting format. That was a draft for comment. Check its current status before relying on it.
Where do I go if the ombudsman does not help?
The Reserve Bank's Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 covers credit information complaints. If it is still unresolved, reports say you can approach the Consumer Education and Protection Cell at the Reserve Bank's regional office.

Name Mismatch in a Credit Report: The Short Version
A credit bureau prints what lenders report. A misspelt name is corrected at the lender or by a dispute on the bureau's website, and does little harm by itself. A stranger's account on your file is serious, and is removed by disputing its ownership. As reported, a complaint is to be resolved in thirty days, with Rs 100 a day in compensation after that.
Your credit history stays on your PAN through a change of name, so update the PAN and never take a second one. No Gazette corrects a credit report. To find out which record to correct, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
