Name Change After Marriage in Uttarakhand
Your choices after the wedding, when the marriage certificate is enough, when a Gazette is needed, and the order in which to update each record.
A name change after marriage in Uttarakhand is not compulsory. If you choose to take your husband's surname, a registered marriage certificate is usually enough for Aadhaar, PAN and the bank. A Gazette notification is needed mainly when the marriage is not registered, your first name is also changing, or an office refuses the certificate.

Most women are told that a name change after marriage in Uttarakhand needs an affidavit, a newspaper notice and a Gazette. For many, that is not true, and the money is wasted. This page explains name change after marriage in Uttarakhand honestly: the choice you have, the cheaper route that often works, and the cases where the Gazette is truly needed.
If you do need the Gazette, the full steps are on our gazette name change in Uttarakhand page. For the general process, see name change in Uttarakhand.
Is a Name Change Compulsory After Marriage in Uttarakhand?
No. No law requires a woman to change her name or her surname when she marries. You can keep the name on your certificates for life, and your marriage is just as valid.
- Your degrees, your Aadhaar, your PAN and your passport stay valid in your maiden name.
- Your husband's name can be added to some records, such as a passport, without changing your own name.
- Your children can carry their father's surname while you keep yours.
- You can decide later. There is no deadline for a change of name.
What Uttarakhand does require is that the marriage itself be registered. That is a separate matter from your name, and it is covered below.
What Are Your Choices of Name After Marriage?
| Choice | Example | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your maiden name | Kavita Bisht stays Kavita Bisht | Nothing to update |
| Take your husband's surname | Kavita Bisht becomes Kavita Negi | Usually the marriage certificate route |
| Use both surnames | Kavita Bisht Negi | Ask each office. Some treat it as a full change of name |
| Change your first name as well | Kavita Bisht becomes Kiran Negi | A change of name. The Gazette route |
| Husband takes the wife's surname | Ankit Negi becomes Ankit Bisht | A change of name. The Gazette route |
The second row is the common one, and it is the one for which a Gazette is most often sold without need. The fourth row matters in families where the bride is given a new first name at the wedding. That is a new name, and a marriage certificate alone does not support it.
Whatever you choose, choose it once. Decide the exact spelling and spacing before the first record is touched, because every later record will be matched against it.
Marriage Certificate or Gazette: Which Route Is Yours?
| Point | Marriage certificate route | Gazette route |
|---|---|---|
| What you use as proof | The registered marriage certificate | A Gazette change of name notification |
| Fits when | Only the surname changes, to the husband's, and the marriage is registered | The marriage is not registered, the first name changes, or an office refuses the certificate |
| Cost | The registration fee, and each office's own update fee | Usually Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 in all, self-done |
| Time | As long as each office takes | Commonly 3 to 7 weeks, then the updates |
| Accepted | By most offices for a surname change after marriage | Everywhere, for the Gazette of India |
A simple test
- Is your marriage registered, with a certificate in your hand?
- Is only your surname changing, to your husband's surname?
- Do your maiden name and your husband's name on the certificate match your and his other papers?
Three times yes: start with the certificate route. Any no: read the section on when you need a Gazette. Either way, we will tell you which route fits before you pay anything.
How Is a Marriage Registered in Uttarakhand?
The marriage certificate is the paper that makes the cheaper route possible, so it comes first.
- Marriage registration in the state now comes under the Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand, which came into force on 27 January 2025.
- A marriage solemnised after that date is to be registered within 60 days.
- Marriages solemnised from 26 March 2010 up to that date are also to be registered. Check the current time limit on the portal, because the dates have been revised.
- Marriages before 26 March 2010 can be registered, but it is not mandatory.
- Before the Code, marriages were registered under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2010.
- Registration can be done online on ucc.uk.gov.in, or with help from a Common Service Centre.
- A marriage is not invalid only because it was not registered. But without the certificate, the simple route for your name is closed.
What to check on the certificate
Read it the day you get it. Your name on it should be your maiden name as on your identity proof. Your husband's name should match his papers. A wrong letter here spoils every update that relies on the certificate, and correcting it afterwards is slow.
How Does the Marriage Certificate Route Work?
You take the registered marriage certificate to each office as proof of your new surname. There is no affidavit, no newspaper notice and no Gazette fee.
Step 1: Get the marriage registered
Register on the state portal and collect the certificate. Check both names on it.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
Decide the spelling and spacing of your married name, and write it down.
Step 3: Update Aadhaar first
Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the marriage certificate and your identity proof. The Aadhaar rules list a surname change after marriage with the marriage certificate among the updates that need no Gazette.
Step 4: Update PAN
File the PAN correction application with the updated Aadhaar and the marriage certificate. Never apply for a second PAN.
Step 5: Update the bank
Take the updated Aadhaar and PAN and the marriage certificate to your branch.
Step 6: Update the passport and the rest
Apply for a passport re-issue with the papers on the Passport Seva list. Then update the voter ID, driving licence and employer records.
Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime. Be sure of the name before step 3.
When Do You Need a Gazette After Marriage?
No marriage certificate
The marriage is not registered, or cannot easily be registered now, and you have no paper that links the two names.
First name is changing too
You were given a new first name at the wedding, or you want one. A marriage certificate does not prove a new first name.
Names on the certificate do not match
The certificate carries a spelling that differs from your identity proof, and it cannot be corrected in time.
An office refuses the certificate
An employer, a bank or another office says in writing that it wants a Gazette notification.
Both names are already in use
Half your papers are in the maiden name and half in the married name, and you have to prove they are one person.
Papers for use abroad
A visa or a foreign office wants one clear proof of the change that it can verify.
If none of these describes you, you probably do not need a Gazette, and you do not need us. We would sooner tell you that on the phone than take a fee for a notification you could have done without.
What Does Each Office Ask for After Marriage?
This is the usual position for a wife taking her husband's surname. Each office keeps its own list and can change it.
| Office | With a registered marriage certificate | When a Gazette helps |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | Surname change accepted with the certificate | First name change, or no certificate |
| PAN | Correction application with the certificate and updated Aadhaar | Where the certificate is not accepted as proof |
| Bank | Usually accepted with updated Aadhaar and PAN | Where the branch asks for it |
| Passport | Re-issue with the papers on the Passport Seva list for a change after marriage | Check the list for your case |
| Voter ID | Form 8 with supporting proof | Rarely |
| Driving licence | Application to the transport office with proof | Rarely |
| Employer and service record | Ask the establishment section | Often asked for in Government service |
| Degrees and marksheets | Not changed. They stay in the maiden name | Not needed. Keep the certificate with them |
The last row saves a great deal of worry. Your school and college certificates are not reissued in your married name. They stay as they are, and the marriage certificate or the Gazette, kept with them, shows that they are yours.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work After Marriage?
Use this where the certificate route does not fit. The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India, which is accepted across the country.
Step 1: Confirm that you need it
Check your case against the list above, or ask the office that refused the certificate to say so in writing.
Step 2: Make the affidavit
State your maiden name, your married name, your husband's name and the date of marriage, and sign before a notary. Offices that later update your records often ask to see it.
Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice
Print the change in a daily local leading newspaper, with your husband's name and your address, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 4: Type the form and the undertaking
Use the Department of Publication's change of name specimen, in two copies. Sign in your old name, with two witnesses. Sign the undertaking showing the old and the new name.
Step 5: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
Put the same text on a CD in MS Word, add two self-attested photographs and identity proof, and sign the certificate that both copies match.
Step 6: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Pay the Government charge for your wording and print the receipt.
Step 7: Send the file yourself
Send it in person or by post, with a request letter, to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Step 8: Download the Gazette
Check Part IV on egazette.gov.in each week and download the PDF when your notice appears.
Attach a copy of the marriage certificate if you have one. It is supporting proof for the reason you have given.
Can You Use the Uttarakhand Gazette After Marriage?
The state Gazette is printed by the Government Press at Roorkee, which sets its own practice. It can serve where every record you own stays inside the state.
Step 1: Ask where the new name will be used
For a passport, a central job, or a move out of the state, choose the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 3: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee
Note what the press wants and how the fee is paid.
Step 4: Prepare and submit the file
Make the affidavit and the newspaper notice, pay the state fee and submit as directed.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
Many married women move with a husband's job. If that is likely, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India before you choose the state route.
Which Wording Points Matter for Married Women in a Gazette Notice?
"Wife of" or "daughter of"
The notice identifies you by one relation. A married woman usually writes "wife of". The Department lists an additional charge of Rs 250 where both "daughter of" and "wife of" are given in one notice.
Sign in the old name
The guideline says the form is signed in the old name. That is your maiden name, if it is the name on your identity proof today.
Two addresses
If you want both your parental and your marital address in the notice, the Department lists Rs 250 more for giving a present and a permanent address. One address is usually enough.
Both names already in use
Where some papers are already in the married name, the old name can be written with an alias. See alias name in a gazette notification.
A second marriage has its own entries on the Department's list of additional charges, for re-marriage after divorce and after the death of a spouse. If that is your case, ask us to check the wording and the charge before you pay.
What Does a Name Change After Marriage Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
| Item | Certificate route | Central Gazette route |
|---|---|---|
| Affidavit | Not needed for Aadhaar. An office may ask for one | Rs 100 to Rs 500 |
| Newspaper notice | None | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 for each paper |
| Gazette charge | None | Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, more for some wordings |
| Each record update | That office's own fee | That office's own fee |
| Time before updates can start | As soon as you hold the certificate | Commonly 3 to 7 weeks |
The Gazette charge is paid on BharatKosh, is revised from time to time and is not refunded. Our own charge, where we prepare a Gazette file, is quoted per case and shown as a separate line. For the certificate route there is usually nothing for us to do, and nothing to charge.
In Which Order Should You Update Your Records?
The order is the same on both routes. Each office checks against the one before it.
- Aadhaar. Most other updates verify against it.
- PAN. Aadhaar and PAN must agree before the bank will act.
- Bank accounts, then insurance, mutual funds and the provident fund.
- Passport. Apply for a re-issue once your identity papers agree.
- Voter ID and driving licence.
- Employer records, and the ration card or family register where it applies.
Until every record is updated, carry the marriage certificate, or the Gazette, with your identity proof. During the weeks in between, two of your papers will show two different surnames, and that paper explains why.
Which Mistakes Do Women Make With a Name Change After Marriage?
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Paying for a Gazette when the marriage certificate would have done | Run the three-question test first |
| Not registering the marriage | Register it. The certificate is the base of the simple route |
| A wrong spelling on the marriage certificate | Read both names the day it is issued |
| Using the married name on a new record before any update | Update Aadhaar first, then use the new name |
| Updating the bank before Aadhaar and PAN | Keep the order |
| Changing the first name on the strength of a marriage certificate | A new first name needs the Gazette |
| Applying for a new PAN in the married name | Correct the existing PAN. One person, one PAN |
| Trying to get degrees reissued | They stay in the maiden name |
| Using two surnames in different places for years | Choose one name and move every record to it |
A typical case we handle: a newly married woman in Dehradun was quoted a full "name change package" with an affidavit, two newspapers and a Gazette. Her marriage was registered, and only her surname was changing. She updated Aadhaar with the marriage certificate, then PAN and the bank, and paid for no Gazette at all. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
If your marriage is registered and only your surname is changing to your husband's, you do not need a Gazette, a lawyer or us. Take the certificate to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra and work down the list above. Call us if the marriage is not registered, if your first name is changing, if the names on your papers do not match, or if an office has refused the certificate.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. We also help women from Uttarakhand who have moved to another state or abroad after marriage, because the Gazette of India is open to every Indian citizen.
