Alias Name in a Gazette Notification for Uttarakhand
What an alias is, when it belongs in your Gazette notice, how the notice reads, what it adds to the fee and when a correction is the better route.
An alias in a Gazette notification is another name you have been known by, written with the word "alias" in your old name. It lets one change of name notice tie two or three old names to a single new one. The Department of Publication charges Rs 250 more for each alias.

An alias name in a gazette notification is for people whose papers carry more than one name: a school name and a home name, a name with a surname and without it, or a maiden and a married name. This page explains when an alias name in a gazette notification is the right tool, how it reads and what it costs.
An alias goes in a change of name notice. For that notice in full, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand. If one record simply misspelt your name, you may need a correction, not an alias: see name correction vs name change.
What Is an Alias in a Gazette Notification?
Alias means "also known as". In a Gazette change of name notice, it joins the different names a person has been known by, so that all of them are stated as belonging to one person.
A notice without an alias says: I was known as A, and shall be known as B. A notice with an alias says: I was known as A, alias C, and shall be known as B. The second ties both A and C to B in one publication.
- The alias sits in the old name, the part that describes how you were known until now.
- It is part of a change of name notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
- The Department of Publication lists an additional charge of Rs 250 for each alias.
- It does not give you two legal names. Its purpose is to end with one.
Think of an alias as a bridge. Records that carry the old names stay readable, because the Gazette says in public that they were all you.
When Does an Alias Belong in Your Notice?
When you have truly been known by more than one name, and your papers show it.
School name and home name
The school admitted you as Pappu Singh. Everything since says Pradeep Singh Rawat. Both names are on real papers.
With and without a surname
Some certificates say Rakesh Kumar. Others say Rakesh Kumar Negi. You want one name from now on.
Maiden and married names in use
Half your papers are in your maiden name and half in your married name, with no registered marriage certificate to link them.
Service name and certificate name
You joined a job under a shorter name than the one on your degree, and both have been in use for years.
A name used abroad
You used a simpler form of your name while working outside India, and it appears on papers from that time.
Property or bank papers in another name
An old passbook or a sale deed carries a name you no longer use, and you may have to prove it was you.
In each case there are two names with real records behind them, and no single office made a "mistake" that it can simply correct. The alias states the facts as they are.
When Should You Not Use an Alias?
| Your situation | Why an alias does not fit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One record has a typing mistake | You were never "known as" the mistake | Ask the issuing office to correct it |
| A board certificate misspells your name, and the board wants Gazette proof | That is a wrongly written name | A public notice for a wrongly written name |
| You want to keep using two names | Aadhaar, PAN and banks hold one name | Choose one name and move every record to it |
| A pet name that is on no paper at all | There is nothing to bridge | Leave it out |
| A registered marriage certificate already links the two names | The certificate is the bridge | Usually no Gazette is needed |
| You want to hide a past name | An alias publishes it | Take advice. A Gazette is a public record |
The test is simple. An alias is for a name you were really known by and that is written on a record you may have to rely on. Every alias you add costs Rs 250 and lengthens the notice, so add only those that earn their place.
Alias, Correction or Plain Change: Which Fits Your Papers?
| Point | Plain change of name | Change of name with alias | Public notice, correction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your papers show | One old name | Two or more old names | One true name, and a record that misspelt it |
| You want | A new name | One name in place of several | The true name restored in that record |
| The notice says | Hitherto known as A, hereafter B | Hitherto known as A alias C, hereafter B | Wrongly written as X, the actual name is Y |
| Government charge | Commonly Rs 1,100 adult | That, plus Rs 250 for each alias | Commonly Rs 1,400 |
| Afterwards | Update every record | Update every record to the one name | Apply to the office holding the wrong record |
Can the final name be one of the old names?
Yes, and it often is. A person known as Rakesh Kumar in some papers and Rakesh Kumar Negi in others may settle on Rakesh Kumar Negi. The notice then says he was known as Rakesh Kumar alias Rakesh Kumar Negi, and shall be known as Rakesh Kumar Negi. Ask us to check the wording before you file, because this kind of notice has to read clearly.
How Does a Gazette Notice With an Alias Read?
The notice follows the Department's change of name specimen, with the alias placed in the old name. These samples are illustrations. The names and addresses are made up.
One alias
I hitherto known as PAPPU SINGH alias PRADEEP SINGH, son of Shri KUNDAN SINGH RAWAT, residing at 18, Tapovan Road, Rishikesh, District Dehradun, Uttarakhand 249201, have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as PRADEEP SINGH RAWAT.
Two aliases
I hitherto known as RAKESH KUMAR alias RAKESH alias R. K. NEGI, son of Shri GOVIND SINGH NEGI, residing at 7, Mall Road, Almora, Uttarakhand 263601, have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as RAKESH KUMAR NEGI.
Maiden and married name
I hitherto known as KAVITA BISHT alias KAVITA NEGI, wife of Shri ANKIT NEGI, residing at 22, Kusumkhera, Haldwani, District Nainital, Uttarakhand 263139, have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as KAVITA NEGI.
Each ends with the line that the applicant has complied with other legal requirements, and the form carries two witnesses. Type each alias exactly as the record that carries it. The order does not change the meaning, but putting the name on your main identity proof first makes the notice easier to follow.
What Does an Alias Add to the Gazette Fee?
The Department of Publication's list of additional charges says: for an alias, Rs 250 more, for each alias. This is added to the charge for the notice itself.
| Notice | Adult | Minor |
|---|---|---|
| Change of name, no alias | Rs 1,100 | Rs 1,700 |
| With one alias | Rs 1,350 | Rs 1,950 |
| With two aliases | Rs 1,600 | Rs 2,200 |
| With three aliases | Rs 1,850 | Rs 2,450 |
These sums use the commonly listed base charges and Rs 250 for each alias. The Department revises its rates, so confirm the total before you pay. The charge is paid on BharatKosh and is not refunded.
- Other wordings on the same list also add Rs 250 each: giving both "daughter of" and "wife of", and giving both a present and a permanent address.
- A longer notice also costs more in the newspaper, where the charge is by the word or the line.
- Our own charge is separate and quoted per case.
Which Papers Does a Notice With an Alias Need?
The same papers as any change of name notice, with the aliases carried through every one of them.
| Paper | What changes because of the alias |
|---|---|
| Undertaking, signed | Shows every old name, with "alias", and the new name |
| Original newspaper | The notice prints the old names with "alias" and the new name |
| Typed form, two copies, two witnesses | The same wording as the newspaper |
| CD in MS Word | The same wording, without the witness part |
| Two photographs and identity proof, self-attested | No change |
| Certificate that hard and soft copy match | No change |
| Request letter with the fee | Mentions the aliases and the higher charge paid |
We also add a self-attested copy of a record that shows each alias. The Department's list does not ask for it. It is our practice, because it shows at a glance why each name is in the notice.
You sign the form in your old name. Where there are several, sign the way you sign on your main identity proof. Documents must not be older than one year, and nothing submitted is returned.
How Do You File a Gazette Notice With an Alias?
Step 1: List every name on your papers
Go through all your records and write down each different name, with the record that carries it.
Step 2: Decide what each name is
Mark each one as a real name you were known by, or as a mistake the issuing office can correct. Only the first kind is an alias.
Step 3: Choose the one final name
Fix the spelling, the spacing and the initials, and write it down.
Step 4: Draft the notice
On the change of name specimen, write the old names joined by "alias", then the new name.
Step 5: Publish the newspaper notice in the same words
Keep the original newspaper.
Step 6: Prepare the rest of the file
Undertaking, form in two copies with two witnesses, CD, photographs, identity proof, certificate and request letter.
Step 7: Pay the base charge plus Rs 250 for each alias
Confirm the total, pay on BharatKosh and print the receipt.
Step 8: Send the file yourself and download the Gazette
Send it in person or by post to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then check Part IV on egazette.gov.in.
What Does an Alias Do for You After Publication?
What it does
- Links each old name to you, in a public record
- Lets you update a record that carried any of those names
- Explains old certificates, passbooks and deeds when someone asks
- Gives you an honest answer where a form asks for other names you have used
What it does not do
- It does not change any record by itself
- It does not let you keep two names running
- It does not correct a board certificate, which the board does on its own form
- It does not hide anything. It is a public notice
After the Gazette, move every record to the one final name, starting with Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then the passport. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime, so settle the final spelling before you go.
Keep the old records. A degree in an old name does not have to be reissued to stay valid. The Gazette, kept with it, shows that the name on it was yours.
Is a "One and the Same Person" Affidavit Enough in Place of an Alias Notice?
Sometimes. For a small difference between two papers, an office may accept an affidavit on stamp paper in which you swear that both names are yours. It is quick and cheap.
| Point | Affidavit | Gazette notice with alias |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your sworn statement before a notary | A notice in the Government's Gazette |
| Who can check it | Only someone who sees the paper | Anyone, on the Government portal |
| Accepted by | The office that agrees to take it | Offices across India, for the Gazette of India |
| Cost and time | A day, and Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Several weeks, and the Gazette and newspaper costs |
| Good for | One office and a small difference | Several offices, or a passport, a job or property |
So ask the office first. If it accepts an affidavit for your case, you may not need a Gazette. If you will face the same question at the passport office, a bank and an employer, one Gazette notice answers all of them at once.
Can an Alias Go in an Uttarakhand Gazette Notice?
Ask the Government Press at Roorkee. Its format and its charges are its own, and the Rs 250 figure above is the Central one.
Step 1: Check which Gazette your offices accept
For a passport, a central job or offices outside the state, use the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 3: Send your draft with the aliases
Ask if the wording is acceptable, and in which language it should be.
Step 4: Ask the charge for your wording
Ask if an alias adds to the charge, and how the fee is paid.
Step 5: Submit as directed and download the notice
Keep copies, and save the PDF from gazettes.uk.gov.in.
People who need an alias usually need it for offices in more than one place. That points to the Gazette of India. See Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do People Make With an Alias?
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| A typing mistake listed as an alias | Get the issuing office to correct it |
| A name that is on no record added "to be safe" | Add only names that appear on a paper you rely on |
| An old name that is on a record left out | List every name before you draft |
| The alias in the form but not in the newspaper | Use the same wording in both |
| An alias typed differently from the record | Copy each name from its record |
| Only the base charge paid | Add Rs 250 for each alias and confirm the total |
| Two names kept in use after the Gazette | Move every record to the one final name |
| An alias used where a public notice was needed | If one name was a record's error, it is a correction |
A typical case we handle: a man in Pauri had Pappu Singh on his class 8 record and a ration card, and Pradeep Singh Rawat on everything later. A bank holding his late father's deposit wanted proof that both were the same man. A change of name notice with one alias, in the Gazette of India, settled it, and the same notice later served for his passport. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
If one office accepts a "one and the same person" affidavit, you need no Gazette. If your case is one alias and one clear final name, you can file the notice yourself with the Department's specimen and this page. We are useful when there are several names across many records and someone has to decide which are aliases, which are errors and what the final name should be. Our charge is quoted per case.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Send photos of your records on WhatsApp from any of them.
People Also Ask About an Alias in the Gazette
What does alias mean in a gazette notification?
It means "also known as". It joins the different names you have been known by in the old name part of the notice.
How much does an alias cost in the gazette?
Rs 250 more for each alias, on the Department of Publication's list of additional charges.
Can I have two names in one gazette?
You can state two or more old names with "alias". The notice ends with one name that you will use from then on.
What if my documents have different names?
If each is a real name you were known by, a change of name notice with an alias ties them together. If one is a record's error, that record is corrected.
Is an alias name legal in India?
Stating an alias in a Gazette notice is allowed and has a listed charge. It records names you have used. It does not give you two legal names.
Do I need a gazette if my name is slightly different in two documents?
Not always. Some offices accept a "one and the same person" affidavit for a small difference. Ask the office first.
Does the passport form ask about aliases?
Yes. The passport application form has a question asking if you are known by any other names, or aliases. Answer it truthfully, and keep the Gazette notice to show how the names link.
Can my final name use initials for the passport?
The passport application asks for the given name in full and says initials are not allowed. Choose a final name with every part written out.
Is it an offence to hide an old name on a passport form?
The passport form warns that it is an offence under the Passport Act, 1967 to give false information or suppress material information to obtain a passport.
Is a different order of the same words an alias?
Usually not. The same words in a different sequence is a difference of order, not a separate name. Many offices correct the order with a supporting document.
Do I need an alias if my initials are expanded in one paper?
Often not. R. K. Negi and Rakesh Kumar Negi can be the same name in short and full form. Add it as an alias only where an office treats it as a separate name.
Can an alias be used for a minor's notice?
Yes. The same Rs 250 for each alias applies on top of the minor's base charge, and the parents or guardian sign the papers.

Alias Name in a Gazette Notification: The Short Version
An alias is another name you were really known by. In a change of name notice it sits in the old name, joined by the word "alias", so one notice links every old name to a single final name. Each alias adds Rs 250 to the Gazette charge. Use it for names that are on real records, not for typing mistakes, which the issuing office corrects.
Carry the same wording through the newspaper, the undertaking, the form and the CD, pay the full charge in one go, and afterwards move every record to the one name. To have your records sorted first, send them on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
