Public Notice Fee and Undertaking in the Gazette
What a Gazette public notice costs, which extra charges can apply, how to pay, and what the signed undertaking must say.
The Gazette of India charge for a public notice, such as a wrongly written name, is commonly Rs 1,400, against Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name. It is paid on BharatKosh and is not refunded. The file also needs a signed undertaking that shows the correct and the wrong name, your father's or husband's name and your address.

The public notice gazette fee is not the same as the change of name fee, and paying the wrong one holds a file up. This page sets out the public notice gazette fee, the additional charges, how to pay, and the undertaking that every public notice file must carry, for people filing from Uttarakhand.
For when a public notice applies and the full list of papers, read public notice for wrongly written name in Uttarakhand. If you are not sure your case is a correction, read name correction vs name change first.
What Is the Gazette Fee for a Public Notice?
A public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India carries its own printing charge. The figure in use is Rs 1,400 for each case. The Department of Publication's guideline for a public notice prints this amount, and the same figure is quoted from the Department's rate revision order of September 2023.
- It is a Government charge, paid to the Department of Publication.
- It is higher than the adult change of name fee, which is commonly Rs 1,100.
- It is paid only through BharatKosh, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal.
- It is not refunded.
How Does the Public Notice Fee Compare With Other Gazette Fees?
| Type of notice | Government charge | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Change of name, adult | Rs 1,100 | Taking a new name, or adding or dropping a surname |
| Change of name, minor | Rs 1,700 | A child under 18, applied for by the parents or guardian |
| Public notice | Rs 1,400 | Correction of a wrongly written name, among other matters |
These are the amounts commonly in force. All three are revised by the Department from time to time, so treat them as figures to confirm, not to rely on blindly.
The gap between Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,400 tempts some people to file a correction as a change of name. Do not. The two notices say different things, and a Gazette that says you changed your name when you did not causes more trouble than the Rs 300 saved.
Which Additional Charges Can Apply?
The Department publishes a list of cases where additional charges are applicable. It is short, and most of it concerns the wording of a notice.
| Wording or case | Additional charge |
|---|---|
| An alias | Rs 250 more, for each alias |
| Both "daughter of" and "wife of" in one notice | Rs 250 more |
| Both present and permanent address | Rs 250 more |
| A line that name is changed and not religion, or religion and not name | Rs 250 more |
| Re-marriage after divorce, with the applicant's change of name | Rs 1,100 more |
| Re-marriage after the death of a spouse, with the applicant's change of name | Rs 1,100 more |
| The same, along with a minor child | Rs 1,700 for the minor and Rs 1,100 for the adult, Rs 2,800 more in all |
For a plain public notice about one wrongly written name in one record, none of these usually applies. They matter when your notice gives two addresses, mentions both your father and your husband, or adds an alias.
What Is the Total Cost of a Public Notice?
| Item | Typical cost | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Gazette charge, public notice | Rs 1,400 | The Government, on BharatKosh |
| Newspaper notice | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The newspaper |
| Photographs, CD, typing and printing | A small amount | Local shops |
| Attestation of the connected document | A small amount, or none | The attesting officer or notary |
| Speed Post to Delhi | A small amount | India Post |
| The issuing office's own correction fee, afterwards | As that office sets | The board, employer or office |
| Our assistance | Quoted per case | Us, shown as a separate line |
The guidelines ask for one daily local leading newspaper for a public notice, so the newspaper line is paid once. Remember the last Government line in the table. The Gazette is supporting proof, and the office that holds the wrong record charges its own fee to correct it.
Before you spend any of this, ask the issuing office if it will correct the record on its own form. If it will, the Gazette charge and the newspaper cost are both saved.
How Do You Pay the Public Notice Fee?
The steps are the same as for any Gazette fee. What differs is the amount.
Step 1: Confirm the current charge
Check the rate for a public notice on the Department of Publication's website, and add any additional charge your wording attracts.
Step 2: Open bharatkosh.gov.in
Type the address yourself. Choose the option to pay without registering.
Step 3: Select the Department of Publication's entry
Choose the ministry and the purpose shown for the Department of Publication. The Department is now under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and older guides name its earlier ministry, so go by what the portal and the Department's own page show today.
Step 4: Enter the amount and your details
Type the charge for a public notice, and your name and address as on your identity proof.
Step 5: Pay and print the receipt
Pay by net banking, card or UPI. Download the receipt and print two copies.
Step 6: Put the receipt with the request letter
The guidelines ask for a request letter along with the requisite fee. Write the transaction reference number in the letter and attach the receipt.
For the portal in more detail, including what to do when a payment fails, see BharatKosh fee payment for gazette name change.
Is the Public Notice Fee Refunded, and What If You Paid the Wrong Amount?
No refund when
- The file is returned for a missing or wrong paper
- The Controller rejects printing matter that is incomplete, vague, unlawful or misleading
- You later learn the issuing office would have corrected the record itself
- You filed the wrong kind of notice
Wrong amount
- Paid Rs 1,100 for a public notice: the payment is short. Ask the Department how to make up the difference before you post
- Paid more than needed: do not count on getting the extra back
- Paid before the papers were ready: finish the file soon, because supporting papers must not be older than one year
Pay last. Make the undertaking, publish the newspaper notice and type the form first. The fee is the one step that cannot be undone.
What Is the Undertaking in a Public Notice File?
An undertaking is a signed statement in which you take responsibility for the facts in your notice. It is the first paper on the Department's list for a public notice.
The Gazette office does not hold an inquiry into whose spelling is right. It prints what you declare. The undertaking is your signed word that the name was wrongly written as you say, and that the name you give as correct is the true one.
- It is signed by the applicant.
- It shows two names: the correct one and the wrong one.
- It identifies you by your father's or husband's name and your residential address.
- It must agree, word for word on the names, with the form, the CD and the newspaper notice.
What Must the Undertaking Contain?
| Part | What to write | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| Your name | Your own correct name, as on your identity proof | The misspelt form used here |
| Father's or husband's name | In full | Initials only |
| Residential address | Full address with district and pin code | A different address from the form |
| Whose name is in question | Yours, or your father's, mother's, spouse's or minor child's | Not said clearly |
| The wrong name | Exactly as the record shows it | Corrected by habit while typing |
| The record | Where the wrong name appears | Left out |
| The correct name | Exactly as your trusted proof shows it | A spelling that is on no proof |
| Declaration | That the facts are true and correct to the best of your knowledge and belief | Left out |
| Place, date and signature | Signed by you | Unsigned, or undated |
The guidelines put it in one line: an undertaking signed by the applicant, showing the correct and the wrong name, with full details of the father's or husband's name and the residential address. The declaration line follows from the formalities in the same guideline.
What Does an Undertaking for a Public Notice Look Like?
This sample is our own illustration, not an official text. The name and address are made up.
UNDERTAKING
I, Sunil Kumar Bisht, son of Shri Devendra Singh Bisht, residing at 5, Subhash Nagar, Haldwani, District Nainital, Uttarakhand 263139, do hereby undertake and declare as under:
1. That my name has been wrongly written as Sunil Kumar Bist in my educational documents.
2. That my correct name is Sunil Kumar Bisht, as recorded in my Aadhaar card and other documents.
3. That I wish to publish a public notice to this effect in the Gazette of India, Part IV.
4. That the facts stated above are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief, and I shall be responsible for them.
Place: Haldwani
Date: [date]
[Signature]
Sunil Kumar Bisht
- Type it on plain paper, unless the Department's current guideline asks for something else.
- Copy the two names from the same source as the form, so they cannot differ.
- Keep a signed photocopy for your own file. Nothing sent to the Department is returned.
Is the Undertaking the Same as an Affidavit?
| Point | Undertaking | Affidavit |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A signed statement taking responsibility for the facts | A statement sworn on oath |
| Signed before | The guideline asks for it to be signed by the applicant | A notary, an oath commissioner or a magistrate |
| Paper | Plain paper, unless told otherwise | Non-judicial stamp paper |
| Who asks for it | The Department of Publication, for the Gazette file | Often the office that holds the wrong record, such as a board |
The Department's list for a public notice names an undertaking. It does not list a notarised affidavit. The office that will correct your record is a separate matter. A school board, an employer or a Registrar often asks for an affidavit in its own format, on stamp paper.
So you may end up making both: the undertaking for the Gazette, and an affidavit for the office. They must tell the same story with the same spellings.
How Do the Fee and Undertaking Work for Minors and Applicants Abroad?
A minor child's record
The parent makes and signs the undertaking, naming the child and the child's record. The notice is the parent's public notice about the child's record. Confirm the charge with the Department if the wording covers more than one name.
An Indian living abroad
The guidelines say an Indian living abroad should submit a deed duly attested by the Indian Embassy or High Commission. Ask the Department which charge applies to an applicant abroad before you pay.
In both cases the rule on who sends the file is the same. The application is taken in person or by post or courier, and the guidelines do not permit agents or advocates as a channel.
What Are the Fee and Undertaking for the Uttarakhand Gazette?
Everything above is for the Gazette of India. The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own charge and its own papers for the Uttarakhand Gazette.
Step 1: Ask the office which Gazette it accepts
Ask the board, employer or office holding the wrong record. A Central office, or one outside the state, may want the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Take the press's contact from its website
Open govtpress.uk.gov.in for the current phone, email and address.
Step 3: Ask the charge for a private public notice
Ask also how it is paid: by treasury challan or the state's payment portal. State fees are not paid on BharatKosh.
Step 4: Ask what declaration the press wants
Ask if it wants an undertaking or an affidavit, in which language and on what paper.
Step 5: Pay, submit and keep the receipt
Pay as directed, submit the papers and keep the original receipt and photocopies.
For where a state Gazette is accepted, see Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes With the Fee and the Undertaking Should You Avoid?
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Paying the change of name fee for a public notice | Confirm the public notice charge before you pay |
| Filing a correction as a change of name to save Rs 300 | Use the notice that says what really happened |
| Two addresses, or both father and husband, in the notice without the extra charge | Keep one of each, or add the Rs 250 |
| Paying to a person, an agent or a UPI ID | Pay only on bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name |
| No receipt with the request letter | Print it and write the reference number in the letter |
| The undertaking shows only one name | Show both the correct and the wrong name |
| The undertaking has no father's or husband's name or address | Give both in full |
| Names in the undertaking differ from the form | Copy them from one source |
| The undertaking is unsigned | Sign and date it |
| Paying before asking the issuing office | Ask it first if a Gazette is needed at all |
A typical case we handle: a woman in Kashipur paid Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh for a correction of her mother's name in her marksheet, because every website she read gave only that figure. The file needed the public notice charge. Once the difference was settled as the Department directed, the notice went ahead. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
The fee is paid by you on a free Government portal, and the undertaking is a few lines on plain paper. If your case is one name in one record, you can do both yourself with this page. First check that the issuing office will not correct the record on its own form. Our charge, where we prepare the file, is quoted per case and shown apart from the Government charge.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The Gazette of India charge is the same from every district.
