Newspaper Notice for Gazette Name Change in Uttarakhand
What the notice must say, which newspaper to pick in your district, what it costs and why the full printed page matters.
A newspaper notice for gazette name change is a short classified advertisement that states your old name, new name, father's or husband's name and address. In Uttarakhand, publish it in a daily newspaper read in your district after the affidavit is notarised. Keep the full original page, because the Gazette office asks for it.

The newspaper notice for gazette name change is the second step, between the affidavit and the Gazette, and it is the step people rush. This page explains the newspaper notice for gazette name change for readers in Uttarakhand: the wording, the choice of paper, the cost, the booking and the page you must keep.
For the full list of papers that go with it, see documents required for gazette name change in Uttarakhand. For the whole Gazette step, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.
Why Does the Gazette Ask for a Newspaper Notice?
A name change affects other people: a bank that lent you money, a landlord, an employer, a relative. The newspaper notice tells the public, in the place where you live, that you will now use a new name. It is your open declaration.
The Gazette office does not check your life story. It checks papers. The printed newspaper page is its proof that you made the change public before asking for it to be recorded.
- It comes after the affidavit, because the notice repeats what the affidavit says.
- It comes before the Gazette, because the page goes inside the Gazette file.
- It is not the Gazette. A newspaper notice alone does not make the change usable on Aadhaar, PAN or a passport.
Is One Newspaper Enough, or Do You Need Two?
You will read both answers online. Both have a basis, so here they are, named.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Department of Publication guidelines, simple adult case | One daily local leading newspaper, with no restriction on language |
| Common filing practice, and what we do | Two newspapers: one Hindi daily read in your district and one English daily |
So one newspaper meets the guidelines. We still place two, for a plain reason. A second notice costs a few hundred rupees. A returned file costs weeks, and the Gazette fee is never refunded.
If money is tight and your case is a simple adult change, one good local daily is a fair choice. Read the current guidelines for your type of case on deptpub.gov.in before you decide.
Which Newspaper Should You Choose in Uttarakhand?
The test is simple: a daily newspaper that is sold and read in the district where you live.
What makes a paper suitable
- It is a daily, not a weekly or a monthly
- It has an edition that reaches your district
- It is a known paper, not a pamphlet printed to carry notices
- It has a classified section for change of name notices
- You can buy the printed copy on the day
What to avoid
- A paper nobody in your town has heard of
- A paper that offers only an e-paper and no printed copy
- An edition printed for another state
- A very cheap offer from a paper with no stall sales
Papers that are widely read in the state
Hindi dailies such as Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran and Hindustan are read across Garhwal and Kumaon. English dailies such as The Times of India, Hindustan Times and The Pioneer are sold in Dehradun and the larger towns. These are examples, not a list you must choose from, and we are not paid by any newspaper.
Garhwal, Kumaon and the hills
- Dehradun, Haridwar, Roorkee, Rishikesh: both Hindi and English dailies are easy to book and buy.
- Haldwani, Rudrapur, Kashipur: Hindi dailies have local editions. English dailies reach the main towns.
- Hill districts: a Hindi daily with a local edition is the sensible pick. Ask the paper which edition reaches your town, and arrange for someone to buy the copy if it arrives late in your area.
For the Central Gazette you do not have to use a paper printed in Uttarakhand. What matters is that it is read where you live.
What Must the Newspaper Notice Contain?
| Part | What to write | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Old name | Exactly as on your identity proof | It ties the notice to your papers |
| Father's or husband's name | Full name, same spelling as the affidavit | It tells you apart from others with your name |
| Address | Full address with district and pin code | It shows the notice is from where you live |
| New name | The exact spelling, spacing and initials you want | This is what the Gazette will be matched with |
| A clear statement of change | That you have changed your name and will be known by the new one | It is the purpose of the notice |
| Affidavit date | The date your affidavit was notarised | It links the notice to the affidavit |
Keep it short. Newspapers charge by the word or by the line, and extra words add cost without adding proof. Leave out your phone number, your Aadhaar number and the reason for the change. They are not needed, and your Aadhaar number should never be printed in a newspaper.
What Is the Wording of a Name Change Notice?
These samples show the usual wording. The names and addresses are made up.
For an adult
I, Suresh Singh Rawat, son of Mohan Singh Rawat, resident of 14, Nehru Colony, Dharampur, Dehradun, Uttarakhand 248001, have changed my name to Suresh Rawat. In future I shall be known as Suresh Rawat for all purposes. Affidavit dated [date].
For a married woman
I, Priya Bisht, wife of Ankit Negi, resident of 22, Kusumkhera, Haldwani, District Nainital, Uttarakhand 263139, have changed my name to Priya Negi after marriage. In future I shall be known as Priya Negi for all purposes. Affidavit dated [date].
For a child under 18
I, Deepak Joshi, son of Harish Chandra Joshi, resident of Village Kasardevi, District Almora, Uttarakhand 263601, have changed the name of my minor daughter Gudiya Joshi, aged 9 years, to Ananya Joshi. In future she shall be known as Ananya Joshi for all purposes. Affidavit dated [date].
In Hindi papers
A Hindi daily prints the notice in Hindi. Give the paper your name in English letters as well, and ask for the old and the new name to be printed in English inside the Hindi notice. The Gazette form is matched on the English spelling, so that spelling must be visible on the page.
How Do You Publish the Notice for a Central Gazette File?
Step 1: Get the affidavit notarised first
The notice repeats the affidavit and mentions its date, so the affidavit comes first.
Step 2: Type the notice from the affidavit
Copy the names and the address from the affidavit, letter for letter.
Step 3: Choose the newspaper and the edition
Pick a daily read in your district, and confirm that the edition you book is the one sold in your town.
Step 4: Book it under change of name
Book at the newspaper's office, through its authorised advertisement agency, or on the paper's own booking website. Ask for the classified heading used for change of name notices.
Step 5: Check the proof before it prints
Ask for the proof or the final text in writing, and read your name one letter at a time.
Step 6: Buy the printed paper on the day
Buy two or three copies. Find your notice and note the page number.
Step 7: Keep the full page flat and safe
Keep the whole page, with the paper's name and date at the top, for the Gazette file. Keep the payment receipt too.
How Much Does the Newspaper Notice Cost in Uttarakhand?
A name change notice in Uttarakhand usually costs between Rs 800 and Rs 4,000 for each newspaper. This is the widest gap in the whole name change bill, and it has nothing to do with the Government.
| What changes the price | How |
|---|---|
| Language | A Hindi daily usually costs less than a national English daily |
| City and edition | A notice in an Almora edition costs far less than one in a Dehradun edition of a national paper |
| Length | Papers charge by the word or the line, so a long address costs more |
| Day of the week | Some papers charge more on certain days |
| Who books it | An agency may add its own charge to the paper's rate |
The newspaper charge goes to the newspaper. The Gazette fee goes to the Government. Our charge is a third line, separate from both, and is quoted per case. Ask anyone who books the notice for you to show the newspaper's own bill.
Why Must You Keep the Full Newspaper Page?
The Gazette office wants the complete original page, not a cutting. The top of the page carries the name of the newspaper, the place of the edition and the date. A cutting has none of these, so nobody can tell where or when it was printed.
Accepted
- The whole printed page, folded
- The paper's name and date clearly readable at the top
- Your notice clean, not torn or stained
Not accepted
- A cutting of only the notice
- A photocopy or a scan printed out
- A printout of the e-paper
- A page with the top strip torn off
Buy more than one copy. One page goes into the Gazette file and is never returned. Keep another full page in your own folder, because Aadhaar centres, banks and the passport office may ask to see it after the Gazette is published.
What Should You Check on the Printed Page?
- The old name matches your identity proof.
- The new name matches your affidavit, letter for letter, with the same spacing.
- Your father's or husband's name is spelt the same as in the affidavit.
- The address and pin code are right.
- The paper's name and the date are printed at the top of that page.
- The notice is in the edition sold in your district.
If there is a printing mistake, tell the newspaper the same day. A paper will usually print a corrected notice when the error was its own. Do not send a page with a wrong spelling to the Gazette office and hope it passes. The Gazette fee is not refunded.
The notice, like every supporting paper, must not be older than one year when the Gazette file is sent. If you published a notice long ago and never filed, publish a fresh one.
What Notice Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Need?
The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own practice. Ask before you book, so you do not pay for a notice in the wrong paper or language.
Step 1: Ask the press about the notice
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a newspaper notice is needed for your case.
Step 2: Ask how many papers and in which language
Note the number of newspapers and if a Hindi paper is asked for.
Step 3: Use the same wording as your affidavit
Keep the names and the address the same in both.
Step 4: Publish in a daily read in your district
Book the notice and check the proof before it prints.
Step 5: Keep the full original page
Keep the whole page for the press, and one more for yourself.
If you may file the Central Gazette later, one Hindi and one English notice now will serve both routes, as long as the pages are less than one year old when you file. To choose a route, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes in the Newspaper Notice Send a Gazette File Back?
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| The name is spelt differently from the affidavit | Send typed wording and check the proof |
| Only a cutting was kept | Keep the full page with the paper's name and date |
| The notice was printed before the affidavit | Notarise the affidavit first |
| The paper is a weekly or is not read locally | Use a known daily with an edition in your district |
| The address is missing or cut short | Pay for the full address. It is part of the proof |
| The Hindi notice has no English spelling of the name | Ask for the names in English letters inside the notice |
| The notice is older than one year | Publish a fresh one |
| The wrong type of notice was used | Use the change of name wording, not the wording for a wrongly written name |
A typical case we handle: a man in Pithoragarh booked his notice by phone and read out his new name. The paper printed one vowel wrong. He noticed it only when the Gazette file was being put together. The paper printed a corrected notice, and the file went a week late. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
Can You Book the Newspaper Notice Yourself?
Yes, and many people do. You do not need a lawyer, an agent or us to book a classified notice. The newspaper's office or its own booking website will take it from you.
Do it yourself if
- You live in a town where the newspaper has an office or an agency
- Your affidavit is ready and you can type the notice from it
- You can buy the paper on the day it prints
Use us if
- You live in a hill district and the editions confuse you
- You want two papers booked with the same wording on the right days
- You want the page checked against the affidavit and the Gazette form before the fee is paid
When we book it, we send you the exact wording first and wait for your written yes. We collect the full pages and keep one set for your file.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Your district decides which edition is the right one for the notice, and we pick it with you.
People Also Ask About the Name Change Newspaper Notice
Is a newspaper advertisement compulsory for a gazette name change?
Yes. The original newspaper page is one of the papers the Gazette office asks for in a change of name file.
Which newspaper is best for a name change notice in Uttarakhand?
A known daily that is sold in your district. Many people use one Hindi daily and one English daily.
Can I publish the name change notice online?
You can book it online on a newspaper's website, but it must be printed in the paper. An e-paper printout is not the original page.
How long after the newspaper notice can I apply for the Gazette?
As soon as you have the printed page and the rest of the file. The page must be less than one year old when you file.
Is a newspaper notice enough to change my name?
No. It is the second of three steps. For a real change of name, Aadhaar, PAN and the passport office ask for the Gazette.
Does the newspaper give a certificate?
No certificate is needed. The printed page with the paper's name and date is the proof.
Can I publish the notice in a Delhi newspaper if I live in Uttarakhand?
Use a daily that is read where you live. A paper with no edition in your district may not satisfy the Gazette office.
Is the name change notice the same as the public notice for a wrongly written name?
No. A wrongly written name in a record uses a different notice with different wording.
Should I write "after marriage" in the notice?
It is common but not required. The reason belongs in the affidavit.
Can I print my Aadhaar number in the notice?
No. Your Aadhaar number should never be printed in a newspaper, and the notice does not need it.
What if the top of my newspaper page is torn?
The page must show the paper's name and date at the top. Get a back copy from the newspaper's office.
How soon after the affidavit should I publish the notice?
Soon after. Both papers must be less than one year old when the Gazette file is sent.

The rule on the number of newspapers is from the change of name guidelines of the Department of Publication, and the page names where filing practice differs from it. Newspaper rates change often, so the cost here is a range, not a quote. We take no payment from any newspaper for naming it.
