Name Change Online in Uttarakhand

Which parts of a name change you can do from your phone, which parts still need a signature and the post, and how to spot a fake "online Gazette".

Quick answer

A name change online in Uttarakhand is possible only in part. You can pay the Gazette fee, download the form, book the newspaper notice and download the published Gazette online. You still sign the affidavit before a notary and send the signed file to the Gazette office on paper. Nobody can issue a Gazette instantly online.

A person in Uttarakhand starting a name change from home on a phone, with the affidavit and newspaper page beside it
Part of a name change is online: the form, the BharatKosh fee and the published Gazette. The notary signature, the printed newspaper page and the posted file stay on paper.

People search for name change online in Uttarakhand because they live far from Dehradun, work all day or are outside the state. The honest answer is that a name change online in Uttarakhand is a mix: some steps are fully online, some are on paper, and you can do all of them without leaving your district.

For the full process, read our main guide to name change in Uttarakhand. For the last and longest step, see gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

What Does "Name Change Online" Really Mean?

There is no single Government website where you type a new name, pay a fee and receive a Gazette. A legal name change has three steps, and each step has its own rules: the affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette notification.

So "online" can honestly mean two things:

Online at the Government's end

Parts of the process that the Government itself runs online: paying the Central Gazette fee, getting the form and guidelines, and downloading the published Gazette.

From home at your end

Doing the whole thing without travelling to Dehradun or Delhi. You send scans on your phone, sign papers near your home and use the post. This is what most people actually want.

What it cannot mean is "no signature and no paper". Three things stay physical for every applicant: your signature before a notary, the printed newspaper page, and the signed file that goes to the Gazette office.

Which Steps of a Name Change Are Online, and Which Are on Paper?

Online and offline parts of each step of a name change from Uttarakhand

Count the rows. Four are fully online and four are part online. None of them needs a trip outside your district.

Can the Name Change Affidavit Be Made Online?

The words can. The signature cannot. An affidavit is a sworn statement, and it is signed by you in front of the notary who attests it.

  • Online: the draft is typed, sent to you, corrected and agreed on your phone.
  • On paper: it is printed on non-judicial stamp paper, and you sign it before a notary at your district court or tehsil.

Be careful with websites that sell a "notarised affidavit delivered to your door" with no meeting with a notary at all. The Gazette office checks the affidavit, and so do offices later. The format, the stamp paper and the cost are on our name change affidavit in Uttarakhand page.

Can the Newspaper Notice Be Published Online?

It can be booked online. It cannot be published online only. The Gazette office asks for the full original page of a printed daily newspaper.

  • Online: choosing the paper and the edition, sending the wording, paying, and seeing the proof.
  • On paper: the printed newspaper of that day. Buy two or three copies.

An e-paper printout or a screenshot is not the original page. A notice on a news website, a blog or social media is not a newspaper notice at all. See newspaper notice for gazette name change for the wording and the choice of paper.

Can You Apply for the Gazette Online?

For the Gazette of India, three things are online and one is not.

Online

  • The guidelines and the form, on the Department of Publication's website
  • The fee, on BharatKosh
  • The published Gazette, on the e-Gazette portal

Not online

  • The application itself. The signed file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi, from the applicant, in person or by post or courier

As of October 2026, we know of no Government page where a private person uploads a name change application for Part IV in place of the paper file. If the Department starts one, it will be announced on deptpub.gov.in. Do not trust any other site that claims to take your Gazette application online.

The e-Gazette portal is for reading, not for applying. egazette.gov.in publishes Gazettes. A page on some other website with "e-gazette" in its name and an "apply now" button is a private service, not the Government.

Which Are the Real Government Portals for a Name Change?

Official portals used in a name change from Uttarakhand

How Do You Do a Name Change From Home on the Central Gazette Route?

This is the full route, with each step marked online or on paper. You stay in your own district throughout.

Step 1: Check that you need a Gazette (online)

Send a photo of your papers and your new spelling on WhatsApp, or check your case against the updates that need no Gazette.

Step 2: Get the affidavit drafted (online) and notarised (on paper)

Agree the wording on your phone. Print it on stamp paper and sign it before a notary near you.

Step 3: Book the newspaper notice (online) and buy the paper (on paper)

Book and pay online. Buy the printed copy on the day and keep the full page.

Step 4: Download and type the form (online), then sign it (on paper)

Type the form in two copies. Sign in your old name, and have two witnesses sign.

Step 5: Pay the fee on BharatKosh (online)

Pay the Government fee and print the receipt.

Step 6: Post the file to Delhi (on paper)

Send it by Speed Post from any post office to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Track it online.

Step 7: Check Part IV and download the Gazette (online)

Look on egazette.gov.in once a week. Download the PDF when your notice appears.

The whole route commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. Each step has its own page on this site, starting with how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi.

Is the Uttarakhand Gazette Route Online?

Published state gazettes are online and free. For how a private name change notice is taken, ask the press before you assume anything is online.

Step 1: Get the press's contact (online)

Open govtpress.uk.gov.in for the current phone, email and address of the Government Press at Roorkee.

Step 2: Ask how notices are received

Ask if a private name change notice is being accepted, and if papers are taken by post, by hand or online.

Step 3: Ask how the fee is paid

State fees go by treasury challan or the state's own payment portal, not BharatKosh.

Step 4: Prepare the affidavit and the newspaper notice

These two are the same as on the Central route.

Step 5: Download the published notice (online)

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in by date, category or Bhag and save the PDF.

If you may need a passport or a job outside the state, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India before you choose the state route.

Which Record Updates Can Be Done Online?

The Gazette is supporting proof. Each record is updated by its own office, and each has its own mix of online and counter work.

Online and in-person parts of record updates after a name change
OrderRecordOnline partIn person
1AadhaarBook the appointmentVisit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the Gazette, the affidavit and the newspaper page
2PANThe correction application is filed onlinePapers may have to be sent, as the application directs
3Bank accountsLittleVisit the branch with the updated Aadhaar and PAN
4PassportApply and book the appointment on Passport SevaVisit the Passport Seva Kendra with originals
5Voter IDForm 8 is filed onlineA field check may follow
6State certificatesApply on e-District UttarakhandAs the office asks

The rules of these portals change. Check each office's own website on the day you apply. Do them in this order, because most offices verify against Aadhaar and PAN.

Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime. Do not try an update before the Gazette is published and the spelling is settled.

How Do You Spot a Fake Online Name Change Service?

Claims made by fake online name change services and the facts
What the website saysWhat is true
"Gazette in 24 hours" or "in 3 days"The Central Gazette commonly takes 30 to 45 days after a complete file is filed
"100 percent online, no signature needed"The affidavit is signed before a notary and the form is signed by you and two witnesses
"Gazette for Rs 999"The Central Government fee alone is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult
"Official e-Gazette application portal"The official portals end in .gov.in, and the e-Gazette portal is for reading published Gazettes
"Name change certificate by email"There is no such certificate. The proof is the published Gazette page
"We will submit your file at the Gazette office"The application goes in from the applicant. An agent cannot submit it
"Share your Aadhaar OTP to start"No step of a name change needs you to share an OTP with anyone

Three checks before you pay any online service

  1. Ask which Gazette you will get, Central or state, and if the price includes the Government fee.
  2. Ask for the BharatKosh receipt in your name and the postal tracking number, when the time comes.
  3. Ask for a phone number and an office address, and check both.

A typical case we handle: a student from Pithoragarh, studying in Delhi, paid a website for an "online Gazette" and received a PDF by email within two days. It looked official. It was an affidavit typed on a letterhead, with no Gazette date or page number, and it could not be found on the e-Gazette portal. He then did the real process, which took six weeks. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

Can You Do It From a Hill District, From Another State or From Abroad?

From a hill district

Yes. The notary is at your district court or tehsil, the newspaper is booked online, and the file goes from your nearest post office that books Speed Post. Allow a few extra days for the post, more in the monsoon.

From another state

Yes. The Central Gazette is open to every Indian citizen, and no Uttarakhand domicile proof is asked for. Make the affidavit and the newspaper notice where you now live, with your present address.

From abroad

Yes, on the Central route, at the fee of Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad. The papers have their own attestation rules. Read the guidelines for applicants abroad, or call us, before you sign anything.

One rule holds in all three: the address in your affidavit, your newspaper notice and your form should be the same, and it should match your identity proof.

Does Doing It Online Cost Less or Take Less Time?

  • The Government fee is the same. Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor on the Central route, however you prepare the file.
  • The newspaper and notary costs are the same. Usually Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 for each paper and Rs 100 to Rs 500 for the affidavit.
  • You save travel. No trips to Dehradun or Delhi, and fewer trips in your own district.
  • The office's time is the same. Publication commonly takes 30 to 45 days. Working online shortens the first ten days, not the wait at the office.

A self-done total is usually Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000. The full bill and the timeline are on our gazette name change time and fees page.

How Does Our WhatsApp Process Work?

Almost every file we handle for Uttarakhand is done on WhatsApp and by post. Here is what that means in practice, with nothing hidden.

What we do from our desk

  • Check if you need a Gazette at all
  • Draft the affidavit and confirm the spelling with you in writing
  • Book the newspaper notice and collect the pages
  • Type the form and the soft copy
  • Guide the BharatKosh payment
  • Check the file page by page
  • Watch Part IV and send you the PDF

What you still do yourself

  • Send clear scans of your papers
  • Approve the exact spelling in writing
  • Sign the affidavit before a notary
  • Sign the form, with your two witnesses
  • Send the file in your own name
  • Visit the Aadhaar centre, the bank and the passport office afterwards

Our charge is quoted per case and is always shown as a separate line from the Government fee. We are a private documentation consultancy, not a Government body.

When you do not need us

Every portal named on this page is free to use. If your case is a plain adult name change and you are at ease with forms, you can do the whole thing yourself from home with the pages on this site.

Who Wrote and Reviewed This Page?

This page is written by the Documentation Desk Team of UttarakhandNameChange.com, the team that prepares name change files on WhatsApp and by post for people across Uttarakhand.

It is reviewed by Advocate Vipin Chauhan.

The page separates what is online from what is on paper, and it does not claim that a name change is fully online. Portal rules change, most of all for Aadhaar, PAN and passport updates, so the page tells you to check each office's own website on the day you apply.
