Name Change in Nainital

The local side of a name change for people in Nainital district: how we serve Nainital and Haldwani, where each record is corrected, why the High Court is not where a name is changed, and what it means that the state school board sits at Ramnagar.

Quick answer

A name change in Nainital follows the same three steps as anywhere in the state: an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette. It is not done at the High Court. The Gazette of India file goes to Delhi. We serve Nainital and Haldwani on WhatsApp and by courier, from our Dehradun office.

A name change in Nainital needs no court, though the High Court sits here: an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette are enough, and a board marksheet is corrected through the school.

This page is about name change in Nainital district: the lake town, Haldwani, Ramnagar and the hill tehsils. It does not repeat the process. It tells a resident where things are here, and covers the points that come up often with a name change in Nainital.

For the steps themselves, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

What Are the Three Steps, for a Nainital Resident?

The process is the same across the state and is set out in full elsewhere. This is the outline, with the local point at each step.

Step 1: Decide if you need a Gazette at all

A spelling slip on one paper is corrected at the office that issued it. Send us the papers and we will tell you, free.

Step 2: Sign the affidavit before a notary

Notaries sit at the court complexes at Nainital and Haldwani and near the tehsil offices. Read our draft first. See name change affidavit in Uttarakhand.

Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, in the edition that serves this district. Keep the full original page.

Step 4: Sign the Gazette form, the undertaking and the certificate

With two witnesses. We prepare the typed copies and the CD.

Step 5: Pay the Government charge on BharatKosh

Online, from anywhere. Print the receipt.

Step 6: Send the file to the Department of Publication in Delhi, and wait for the Gazette

The Gazette of India is published online. Download the notification and print clear copies.

For the detail, read newspaper notice for a gazette name change and how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi.

Where Is Each Record Corrected in the District?

Each record is updated at its own office. These are the kinds of office a resident of the district deals with. Check the address and timings of each before you go.

Why Is the High Court Not Where a Name Is Changed?

The state's High Court is in this district, and so is its bar council. People here are often told that a name change is "done through the court". It is not.

What a change of name needs

  • An affidavit, sworn before a notary
  • A notice in a newspaper
  • Publication in the Gazette
  • No judge, no petition, no hearing and no court fee
  • The Department of Publication, which publishes the Gazette, is an office of the Government, not a court

When a court does come in

  • A divorce decree, where a woman returns to her maiden name
  • An adoption or a guardianship order, for a child's name
  • A dispute with a board, a university or an office that refuses a correction it should make
  • A declaration, where title or identity is contested
  • Each of these is a lawyer's work, and none is the ordinary route

A notary's seal on an affidavit is not a court's order either. It confirms that you swore the statement. The Gazette is what publishes the change. Read affidavit vs newspaper vs gazette and divorce decree as proof for a name change.

What About the School Board at Ramnagar, and the Universities?

The state's school education board has its office at Ramnagar, in this district. A state university sits at Nainital, and the state's open university at Haldwani. So education records are a frequent question here.

  • A state board marksheet is corrected through the school the student appeared from. The school forwards the request to the board. Living near Ramnagar does not change that route.
  • A slip against the school's admission register is a correction. A name that differs from the register is a change, which the board treats more strictly.
  • A marksheet from before the state was formed was issued by the Uttar Pradesh board, and goes to that board.
  • A degree is corrected by the university that issued it, on the class 10 certificate and the university's own enrolment record.
  • A degree is not reissued for a change of name after it was awarded. The Gazette notification links it to the new name.
  • A father's or mother's name on a marksheet follows the same route as the student's.

Read name change in education documents and father's name correction in a Uttarakhand board marksheet.

Which Newspapers Serve for the Notice?

The Department of Publication asks for the change of name to be advertised in a daily local leading newspaper. It does not name newspapers.

  • The Hindi dailies that circulate in Kumaon print their editions for this region from Haldwani.
  • Book the notice in the edition that reaches your own town, be it Nainital, Haldwani or Ramnagar.
  • Choose a daily, not a weekly.
  • In the hill tehsils the paper arrives late and sells out. Ask the agent to keep several copies of the day's issue for you.
  • Read the proof before it prints, and keep the full original page.

We do not sell newspaper space. We give you the wording. See newspaper notice for a gazette name change.

What Is Different in the Hill Tehsils?

  • Everything can be done from home. The Gazette file is prepared from photographs. The only outing is to a notary, and to a post office or courier.
  • A notary may be a bus ride away. Plan the affidavit, the Gazette form and any other paper that needs signing for one trip.
  • Old records are thin. A home name in a land record or a post office passbook is common, with no other paper to explain it. A Gazette notice stating both names is how the two are tied together.
  • Family members work away. A son in the plains or in the forces can send the photographs and handle the messages. The person whose name it is still signs.
  • Courier is slow in the monsoon and in snow. Send papers by a tracked service, and keep photographs of everything you send.

Read alias name in a gazette notification and short name and full name difference in documents.

  • Land records stayed with the tehsil and were carried forward.
  • An old caste or residence certificate is best replaced by a fresh one from the tehsil, in your present name.

Yes, it is planned. On 15 July 2026 the Supreme Court set aside the High Court's 2024 order that had blocked the shift, leaving it to be worked out on the administrative side. Haldwani is in Nainital district too, so the court stays in this district.

Where will the new High Court be built in Haldwani?

In August 2026 the state approved a site of about 30 hectares at Lamachaur, on the Haldwani to Rudrapur highway. It replaced an earlier proposal for land at Gaulapar.

Was the challenge to the High Court shift dismissed?

A petition against the land chosen was dismissed on 7 September 2026 as premature, since the forest land had only been identified and not yet de-reserved.

When did the High Court decide to leave Nainital?

Its full court resolved on 15 September 2022 to shift out of Nainital, citing traffic, connectivity, medical facilities and the cost of living for litigants.

Does the High Court's move change how a name is changed?

No. A change of name never goes to the High Court. It is an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette, wherever the court sits.

My old paper from Rudrapur says Nainital district. Why?

Udham Singh Nagar district was carved out of Nainital district in 1995, so older papers from Rudrapur, Kashipur or Khatima name Nainital. See name change in Udham Singh Nagar.
