Father's Name Correction in an Uttarakhand Board Marksheet
A wrong letter in your father's name on a High School or Intermediate marksheet: where the error starts, how to apply to the board through your school, and when a Gazette is asked for.
A father's name correction in an Uttarakhand Board marksheet is applied for through your school to the board at Ramnagar, on the board's own correction form, with proof of your father's correct name. No Gazette is needed for a plain spelling mistake unless the board asks for one, and then it is a public notice.

A father's name correction in a board marksheet is one of the requests we hear most, usually when a passport, a job or a college form shows up the difference. This page explains father's name correction in a marksheet of the Uttarakhand Board of School Education: where the error begins, how to apply, and what we could and could not confirm.
The board decides every such request under its own rules. Nothing on this page binds it. For the wider picture, read father's name change and correction in Uttarakhand.
Which Board Is This, and Which Papers Carry the Father's Name?
The Uttarakhand Board of School Education has its headquarters at Ramnagar in Nainital district. It conducts the High School examination for class 10 and the Intermediate examination for class 12 for schools affiliated to it. People also call it the Uttarakhand Board or the UK Board.
| Paper | In Hindi | Carries the father's name? |
|---|---|---|
| High School marksheet | अंकपत्र | Yes |
| High School certificate | प्रमाण पत्र | Yes |
| Intermediate marksheet | अंकपत्र | Yes |
| Intermediate certificate | प्रमाण पत्र | Yes |
So one mistake can sit on four papers. The marksheet and the certificate of the same examination are made from the same record, and the Intermediate record is often copied from the High School one.
If your school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education or to the Council that conducts the ICSE and ISC examinations, this page does not apply. See child name change in school records.
Where Does the Error Begin?
A board does not make up a father's name. It prints what the school sent. So the mistake almost always starts at the school, years before the marksheet.
- The admission form. A parent or a clerk writes the father's name, sometimes in short, sometimes by ear.
- The school register. The name is copied in, often in Hindi.
- Board registration. The board's own site shows registration for the board examination in class 9 and in class 11. The school sends each student's details then.
- The marksheet and certificate. The board prints the registered details.
That tells you two things. The best time to catch the error is at registration, in class 9 and again in class 11. And when you apply for a correction later, the board will look at what the school's own record says.
Is Yours a Correction, a Change or a Different Person?
| Case | Example | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A spelling or clerical mistake | The marksheet says Tirlok Singh Bist. Your father's papers say Trilok Singh Bisht | A correction. This page is about this case |
| Your father changed his name later | The marksheet shows the name he had then | The marksheet was right when issued. A board may not alter it. Keep his Gazette with it |
| A different person is named | A step-father or a guardian was entered as father | Not a spelling matter. Take a lawyer's advice |
Be honest about which case you have. An application that calls a later change of name a "printing mistake" is a false statement, and boards check the school's original record.
What Differs Before the Result and After It?
Before the result
- The details are still registration data
- The school can ask the board to update them, in the way and time the board allows
- Give the school a written request with your father's identity proof
- Ask to see the corrected entry
After the result
- The marksheet and certificate are printed
- A correction needs an application to the board on its form
- It goes through the head of the school
- The papers with the error are usually to be sent back to be replaced
So if your child is still in class 9 to 12, do not wait for the marksheet. Deal with it at the school now. Everything below is for a marksheet that has already been issued.
How Do You Apply to the Board for the Correction?
The board's website lists a Correction Form A among its forms. We could not open the form to read its conditions, so treat these steps as the general method and follow the form itself where it differs.
Step 1: Compare the papers
Put the marksheet and certificate next to your father's Aadhaar and his own certificates. Note the exact difference.
Step 2: See what the school's record says
Ask your school for the entry in its register and your admission form. If the school's record is right and only the board's print is wrong, your case is the simplest kind.
Step 3: Get the board's correction form
Download the correction form from the Forms section of the board's website, or ask the school for it.
Step 4: Fill it in and attach proof
Give the father's name as printed and as it should read. Attach the papers the form lists.
Step 5: Have the head of the school forward it
The principal certifies the school's record and sends the application on to the board.
Step 6: Pay the fee as the board directs
Keep the receipt or the challan copy.
Step 7: Keep an acknowledgement and follow up
Note the date and any reference number. Ask the school to check with the board if nothing is heard.
Step 8: Check the corrected papers
Read the father's name, the mother's name and your own name, letter by letter, on both the marksheet and the certificate.
Which Papers Are Usually Asked For?
The board's form is the authority. This is what boards commonly ask for with a correction of a parent's name, so you can start collecting.
From you
- The filled correction form
- The marksheet and certificate that carry the mistake
- Your identity proof
- Your father's identity proof showing the right spelling
- An affidavit, if the board or the school asks for one
- The fee receipt
From the school
- The principal's forwarding note
- An attested copy of the entry in the school register
- An attested copy of the admission form, where it is kept
- The transfer certificate from an earlier school, where it helps
The school's papers carry the most weight. A board corrects a marksheet to match the school's record. If the school's own register has the wrong spelling, ask the school how it can correct its register first, and what proof it needs for that.
For the affidavit, see name spelling correction affidavit, which has a sample for a parent's name.
What Is the Fee, and Is There a Time Limit?
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| A correction form exists | Yes. The board's website lists a Correction Form A |
| Fee for a correction | Not confirmed by us. See the form, or ask the school |
| Fee for a second copy | The board's website gives Rs 50 for a second marksheet and Rs 100 for a second certificate, paid by challan |
| Time limit after the result | Not confirmed by us. Ask the school or the board |
| How long it takes | Not confirmed by us |
We would sooner tell you what we could not confirm than print a figure from another website. Boards in other states set time limits for corrections after a result, some of them short. So apply as soon as you see the mistake, whatever the limit here turns out to be.
Why Should High School and Intermediate Be Corrected Together?
- If the mistake is on the High School papers, look at the Intermediate papers too. It is often carried forward.
- Ask the board, through the school, to correct both examinations. If you studied in two different schools, each school forwards its own.
- Start with High School. An Intermediate correction is easier to support once the High School record is right.
- Check the mother's name and your own name at the same time, and put every correction in one application.
A corrected High School marksheet with an uncorrected Intermediate one leaves you with the same mismatch at the next office. Do the whole job once.
What About Certificates From Before 2002?
The board's own account of its history matters here. A regional office of the Uttar Pradesh board was set up at Ramnagar in 1996 and conducted examinations for the Garhwal and Kumaon regions from 1999. The state's own board was set up in September 2001 and first held examinations in 2002.
- A certificate from 2002 or later is a paper of the state's own board.
- A certificate from the years before that was issued under the Uttar Pradesh board, even for a school that is now in Uttarakhand.
- For such a paper, ask the board's office at Ramnagar which office now holds the record and takes the correction application.
Older papers are harder in every way. The school's register may be worn, the staff have changed, and time limits may long have passed. This is where a board is most likely to ask for more, including a Gazette notification.
When Is a Gazette Asked For?
The board asks for it
It wants a Gazette notification as supporting proof before it corrects the father's name.
The time limit has passed
The board will not reissue the marksheet, and you need a public paper to link it to your father's true name.
Another office needs proof
A passport office, an employer or an office abroad wants the difference explained by a public notice.
The notice is a public notice, not a change of name. The Department of Publication's specimen provides for a declaration that the name of your father has been wrongly written in your educational documents. This is an illustration, with made-up names.
It is for general information that I, ROHIT BISHT, son of Shri TRILOK SINGH BISHT, residing at Village Kasardevi, Post Office Kasardevi, District Almora, Uttarakhand 263601, declare that name of my father has been wrongly written as TIRLOK SINGH BIST in my educational documents. The actual name of my father is TRILOK SINGH BISHT, which may be amended accordingly.
A Gazette does not order the board to do anything. It is supporting proof, and the board still decides under its own rules. Ask the board in writing if a Gazette will help before you pay for one. See public notice for wrongly written name.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this only where the board or another office has asked for it. The notice is a public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Get the requirement in writing
Confirm that a Gazette notification is wanted, and which spelling of your father's name is treated as correct.
Step 2: Gather proof of both spellings
Your marksheet with the wrong spelling, and your father's identity proof with the right one. Get copies attested.
Step 3: Sign the undertaking
You are the applicant. It shows the correct and the wrong name, and your own details.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper, showing the details of the case. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the public notice form
Two typed copies of the specimen, keeping "my father" and "educational documents". Sign with two witnesses.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and supporting papers
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with your identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and an attested copy of the marksheet.
Step 7: Pay the public notice charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,400. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the board
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. When it is published, add a printed copy to your application to the board, through the school.
Would the Board Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
The board is a state body, so the state Gazette may serve for it. Ask before you choose, because your marksheet will also be read by offices outside the state.
Step 1: Ask the board which Gazette it accepts
Through the school, and in writing if you can.
Step 2: Think about who else will read it
For a passport, a central job or study outside the state, the Gazette of India is the safer choice.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private public notice for a wrongly written name is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the format, the papers and the fee, and submit
Keep a photocopy of every page.
Step 5: Download the notice and add it to your application
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Going to Ramnagar without going to the school first | The application is forwarded by the head of the school |
| Paying for a Gazette before the board has asked for one | Apply on the board's form first |
| Filing a change of name notice | If a Gazette is needed, it is a public notice |
| Correcting High School and leaving Intermediate | Correct both |
| Correcting the marksheet and not the certificate | Ask for both papers of each examination |
| Not checking the school's own register | The board corrects to match the school's record |
| Calling a later change of name a printing mistake | Say what happened. Keep the father's Gazette with the marksheet |
| Waiting until a passport or a job needs it | Apply as soon as you see the mistake |
| Laminating a marksheet that has an error | You may have to send it back to be replaced |
A typical case we handle: a young man from Kotdwar found his father's name with one letter wrong on his High School and Intermediate papers, a week before a passport appointment. He asked us for a Gazette. We asked him to see his school first. The school's register had the right spelling, the principal forwarded the board's correction form with an attested extract, and he moved his passport appointment. No Gazette was filed. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
The school and the board do this work, and you can apply yourself with the board's form. We are useful only where the board, or another office, has asked for a Gazette public notice. A refusal by the board is a matter for a lawyer.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The application to the board starts at your own school, wherever in the state it is.
