Mother's Name Change and Correction in Uttarakhand

When your mother's name is wrong or different in your papers: why it happens so often, which form of her name to use, which office corrects each record, and when a Gazette is needed.

Quick answer

A mother's name correction in your papers is usually made by the office that issued the paper, with your mother's identity proof as support. Where the two forms come from her maiden and married names, her marriage certificate links them. A Gazette public notice is needed only where a board or an office asks for one.

A mother's name in her child's records is corrected by the office that issued each paper, using her own present identity papers as the guide.

A mother's name correction is harder to sort out than a father's, for one reason: a woman's name on paper often changes during her life, and her children's records are made at different points along the way. This page explains mother's name correction in Uttarakhand: the kinds of case, which form of her name to use, and where each record is put right.

The record with the difference is yours, so you apply. For a father's name, read father's name change and correction in Uttarakhand.

Why Does a Mother's Name Differ So Often Across Papers?

A father's name usually stays one name from his school days to his pension. A mother's name on paper often does not, and through no fault of hers.

  • Her name before and after marriage. She may have been Sunita Bisht in her school papers and Sunita Rawat afterwards.
  • Kumari and Devi. A girl recorded as Kumari Sunita, or Sunita Kumari, is often written as Sunita Devi after marriage.
  • Few papers of her own. Many women of an older generation hold only an Aadhaar and a voter card, made late in life, sometimes from what a clerk heard.
  • Someone else filled the form. A child's admission form is often filled by the father, a relative or a teacher, who writes her name from memory.
  • Hindi and English. Her name is in Hindi in family records and has been turned into English differently each time.

So a person's birth certificate, class 10 marksheet and passport can each carry a different form of the same mother's name. Each was right, or nearly right, on the day it was written.

Which Case Is Yours?

2. Maiden name on one paper, married name on anotherSunita Bisht and Sunita RawatTwo true names of one woman, at different timesHer marriage certificate links them. Correct to her present name where an office allows
3. Devi on one paper, a surname on anotherSunita Devi and Sunita RawatTwo forms in useHer own papers decide. A notice with an alias if she wants one form
4. She changed her name by GazetteAfter a divorce or a re-marriageAn updateEach office, with her Gazette
5. A different woman is namedA step-mother or an adoptive motherA question of who the mother is in lawA lawyer, or the adoption papers

Cases 2 and 3 are the ones that make a mother's name different from a father's. In both, nothing was written wrongly. The same woman has been known by two forms.

Which Form of Your Mother's Name Should You Use?

The form on her own present identity papers. Your records describe who your mother is, and offices check that against the papers she holds today.

  1. Look at her Aadhaar. For many mothers it is the main paper, and the one offices ask for.
  2. Look at her other papers. PAN, voter card, passport, bank passbook, pension papers. See if they agree with her Aadhaar.
  3. If her own papers agree, that is the form to use in every new paper of yours.
  4. If her own papers disagree with each other, she settles her own name first. Your records cannot be corrected against a moving target.

Write her name on a slip, in English and in Hindi, and copy from it every time you fill a form for yourself or your children.

Do not make her change her name to match your marksheet. It is usually far easier to explain or correct one entry in your record than to change a woman's name on her own Aadhaar, bank account and pension papers.

Where Does a Mother's Name Appear?

Records that carry a mother's name
RecordHow it carries the mother's name
Birth certificateAs a parent, entered at registration
School and board certificatesPrinted along with the father's name on most boards' papers
PassportIn the particulars of the holder
PANIn the details of parents. The form lets the mother's name be the one printed on the card
AadhaarNot recorded as such
Voter IDOnly where the mother is given as the relation
College and scholarship formsUsually asked for, and copied from the marksheet

Older papers often carry only the father's name. If your certificate has no mother's name at all, nothing is wrong with it, and there is nothing to correct. Give her name where a newer form asks for it.

How Do You Get Your Mother's Name Corrected?

Step 1: Decide which case you have

A wrong spelling, a maiden and married name, Devi and a surname, a later change, or a different woman named.

Step 2: Get your mother's own papers together

Her Aadhaar and any other identity proof, and her marriage certificate if there is one. Note the form on each.

Step 3: Fix the form you will use

The one on her present identity papers.

Step 4: List your records that carry her name

Write down how each has it, and mark those that differ.

Step 5: Check each office's own list

Its form, the supporting papers it accepts and any time limit.

Step 6: Apply on its form, with proof

Give the entry as it stands and as it should read. Attach her identity proof, and her marriage certificate where the difference is between a maiden and a married name.

Step 7: Check the result and move to the next record

Start with the oldest paper, usually the class 10 certificate.

Where an office asks for a sworn statement, see name spelling correction affidavit. The sample there for a parent's name works for a mother as well.

Which Office Corrects a Mother's Name in Each Record?

This is the usual position. Each office keeps its own list and can change it.

Which office corrects a mother's name in each record
RecordWho corrects itHowGazette usually needed?
Birth certificateThe Registrar who issued itCorrection under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969No

For a marksheet of the state board, the steps on our page for a father's name apply in the same way to a mother's name: start at the school, and apply on the board's correction form. See father's name correction in an Uttarakhand Board marksheet.

What If One Paper Has Her Maiden Name and Another Her Married Name?

Then both are true. She was one name before her wedding and another after it. Your papers were made on different days.

  • The link is her marriage certificate. It shows the woman of the first name married the man whose surname she then took.
  • Where she changed her surname by Gazette, that Gazette is the link.
  • Where she has neither, she can register the marriage now, or make a sworn statement that both names are hers, as the office concerned accepts.
  • For your own records, ask each office to show her present name, with the linking paper as proof. Some will change the entry, and some will only note it.

A board may treat this differently from a spelling mistake. The maiden name in your marksheet was not wrongly written, so a board may say there is nothing to correct. Ask the school how the board deals with a mother's name that changed with marriage, before you apply.

In Uttarakhand, marriages are registered on the state's portal. See name change after marriage in Uttarakhand.

What If One Paper Says Devi and Another Has a Surname?

This is the most common form of the problem in the hills. A mother is Sunita Devi on her Aadhaar and in the family register, and Sunita Rawat on her child's school form, written by a teacher who assumed the father's surname.

If her own papers all say Devi

  • Devi is her recorded name. Use it
  • The surname in your record is the entry to correct
  • Her identity proof is the supporting paper
  • No Gazette is needed for the office to correct its entry

If her own papers are split

  • Some say Devi and some carry the surname
  • She decides which form she will keep
  • She brings her own papers to that form first
  • Where many records are involved, a change of name notice with an alias joins the two forms

Devi after a name is part of the recorded name, and not a title. A mother named Sunita Devi on her Aadhaar is Sunita Devi, and no office can require her to become Sunita Rawat. See changing Kumari or Devi to a husband's surname.

What If Your Mother Has Changed Her Name by Gazette?

  • Your older papers were right when made. They show the name she had then.
  • Her Gazette notification is the proof of her change. Keep a copy with your certificates.
  • On papers issued from now on, give her new name, and attach her Gazette where an office asks about the difference.
  • To update an existing record of yours, such as a passport, apply to that office with her Gazette and her updated identity proof.
  • You do not usually need a Gazette of your own. Your name has not changed.

Where a mother has taken back her maiden name after a divorce, or a new surname on re-marriage, her children's papers are not changed by that. A child's own name is a separate matter, with its own rules. See child surname change after divorce.

What If a Different Woman Is Named as Mother?

This is not a spelling matter. It is a question of who the mother is in law, and no affidavit, newspaper notice or Gazette settles it.

  • A step-mother's name in a school record. Ask the school to correct it against the birth certificate. Take a lawyer's advice if it refuses.
  • An adoptive mother. The adoption order or the registered deed is the paper, and the Registrar issues the birth certificate on it.
  • A grandmother or an aunt entered as mother. Correction against the birth certificate. A lawyer where the birth record itself is wrong.

We do not take these up as a "mother's name change". For adoption, see name change after adoption in Uttarakhand.

When Is a Gazette Needed for a Mother's Name?

🎓

A board asks for it

It wants Gazette proof before it corrects a mother's name in a certificate, or the time limit has passed.

🏛️

An office asks in writing

A passport office, an employer or a university wants a Gazette notification.

👩

Your mother wants one form of her own name

Her papers are split between Devi and a surname, or between two surnames. That notice is hers to file, not yours.

For a name wrongly written in your record, the notice is a public notice. The Department of Publication's specimen covers the name of "my mother". This is an illustration, with made-up names.

It is for general information that I, ROHIT BISHT, son of Shri TRILOK SINGH BISHT, residing at Village Kasardevi, Post Office Kasardevi, District Almora, Uttarakhand 263601, declare that name of my mother has been wrongly written as SUNITA RAWAT in my educational documents. The actual name of my mother is SUNITA DEVI, which may be amended accordingly.

Use a public notice only where the entry really was wrong. Where your marksheet rightly shows the name your mother had at the time, do not declare it "wrongly written". Ask the board what it accepts for a name that changed with marriage. See public notice for wrongly written name.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work for a Mother's Name?

Use this only where an office has asked for it. The notice is a public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Get the office's requirement in writing

Confirm that it wants a Gazette notification, and which form of your mother's name it treats as correct.

Step 2: Gather proof of both forms

Your record with the wrong entry, and your mother's identity proof with the right one. Get copies attested.

Step 3: Sign the undertaking

You are the applicant. It shows the correct and the wrong name, and your own details.

Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, showing the details of the case. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the public notice form

Two typed copies of the specimen, keeping "my mother" and the record concerned. Sign with two witnesses.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and supporting papers

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with your identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and the attested connected document.

Step 7: Pay the public notice charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,400. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the office

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. When it is published, apply to the board or office that holds the record.

Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used?

The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own practice. Ask the board or office that wants a Gazette which one it accepts.

Step 1: Ask the office which Gazette it accepts

A board outside the state, a central office or the passport office may want the Gazette of India.

Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private public notice for a wrongly written name is being accepted.

Step 3: Ask for the format, the papers and the fee

Say that the name in question is your mother's, in your record.

Step 4: Submit as directed and keep copies

Keep a photocopy of every page.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?

Common mistakes in a mother's name change or correction
MistakeWhat to do
Writing the mother's name with the father's surname by assumptionCopy it from her own Aadhaar
Asking the mother to change her name to match a marksheetCorrect or explain the one entry in your record
Calling a maiden name "wrongly written"It was right then. Use her marriage certificate to link the names
Treating Devi as a title to be droppedDevi after a name is part of the recorded name
Correcting your record before her own papers agreeShe settles her own name first
Filing a change of name notice in your name for her nameFor a wrong entry it is a public notice. Her own change is hers to file
Typing Smt. or Late as part of the nameLeave titles out of the name box
Worrying about a certificate that has no mother's nameThere is nothing to correct
Using a different form of her name on each child's papersOne slip, one form, for every child

A typical case we handle: two brothers from Pauri had their mother as "Kamla Devi" on one brother's marksheet and "Kamla Negi" on the other's, and her own Aadhaar said Kamla Devi. The second brother was asked about the difference at a job verification. His school confirmed its register had been filled with the father's surname by assumption, the board corrected his marksheet on its own form, and their mother changed nothing. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

What is a lawyer's job, not ours

Any case where a different woman is to be shown as mother, a dispute about parentage, an adoption, and a refusal by a Registrar or a board.

When you do not need us

For a wrong spelling or a surname written by assumption, you need only the office that issued your record and your mother's identity proof. Where the forms come from her maiden and married names, her marriage certificate is your proof. We are useful where an office has asked for a public notice, or where your mother wants one form of her own name. Send us the papers and we will tell you which case you have, free.

The public notice wording follows the Department of Publication's specimen, which covers the name of a mother. Which office corrects each record, and how a board treats a name that changed with marriage, is decided by that office, so the page tells you to ask. Mother's Name Change and Correction: The Short Version

A mother's name differs across papers more than a father's, because of marriage, Devi and Kumari, and forms filled by others. Use the form on her own present identity papers. A wrong spelling, or a surname written by assumption, is corrected by the office that issued your record. A maiden and a married name are both true, and her marriage certificate links them.

She does not have to change her name to match your certificate. A Gazette public notice comes in only where an office asks for one. To find out which case is yours, send the papers on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
