Hindi to English Name Spelling Difference in Uttarakhand

When your name is one word in Hindi and two or three spellings in English: why it happens, which spelling to keep, and how to bring your papers in line.

Quick answer

A Hindi to English name spelling difference arises because one Hindi name can be written in English in several ways, and each office picks its own. It is usually a matter of correction, not a change of name. Choose the English spelling on your class 10 certificate or passport, and have the other records corrected to match it.

One Hindi name can be written in English in several ways, so keep the spelling on your passport or class 10 certificate and correct the odd records to it.

In Uttarakhand, family and state records are kept in Hindi, while Aadhaar, PAN and the passport carry English. So a Hindi to English name spelling difference is one of the most common problems people bring to us. This page explains the Hindi to English name spelling difference: why it happens, which spelling to treat as yours, and how to settle it.

Most of these cases need no Gazette. For the office that corrects each record, read name spelling correction in Uttarakhand.

Why Does One Hindi Name Have Several English Spellings?

Hindi is written as it is spoken. English is not. Writing a Hindi name in English letters is called transliteration, and there is no single rule that every office follows for names.

  • A clerk writes the name the way it sounds.
  • A school follows the spelling the parent gave, or the one the teacher preferred.
  • A computer system turns Hindi into English, or English into Hindi, by its own table.
  • The same family may have spelt its surname in two ways for two generations.

So a person can be one name in Hindi on every paper, and three names in English. Nobody has changed anything. Each office has only made a different choice of letters.

The trouble is that offices and computer systems match English names letter by letter. To a bank's system, two English spellings of the same Hindi name are two different people.

Which Letters Cause the Difference?

Almost every case comes down to a handful of sounds.

Hindi sounds that are written in more than one way in English
Hindi soundWritten in English asExample
श, ष, सsh or sBisht and Bist
वv or wRawat and Ravat
ई, ीi or eeJoshi and Joshee
ऊ, ूu or ooPooja and Puja
औ, ौau or ouChauhan and Chouhan
क्षksh or xLakshmi and Laxmi
ज्ञgy, gn or jnGyan and Gnan
त, थ, ट, ठt or thPant and Panth
The silent "a" at the endWritten or droppedRam and Rama, Pandey and Pandeya
The ending "ay" sounday, ai or eySanjay and Sanjai

If the difference between your papers is one of these, you are almost certainly looking at a transliteration difference and not a different name.

Which Names in Uttarakhand Are Spelt More Than One Way?

These are spellings we see for the same Hindi word. Neither spelling in a row is more correct than the other. What matters is which one your own papers carry.

Common names in Uttarakhand with more than one English spelling
In HindiEnglish spellings seen
बिष्टBisht, Bist
जोशीJoshi, Joshee
रावतRawat, Ravat
पंतPant, Panth
पाण्डेयPandey, Pande, Pandeya
चौहानChauhan, Chouhan
लक्ष्मीLakshmi, Laxmi
पूजाPooja, Puja
दीपकDeepak, Dipak
मीनाक्षीMeenakshi, Minakshi, Meenaxi

A family can also differ within itself. A father may write Pandey and his son's school may have written Pande. Both are the same Hindi surname. On English records, they do not match.

Is a Different English Spelling a Change of Name?

Usually not. Your name is the same word. One or more records have written it in English in a different way. That is a matter of correction.

When a Hindi to English difference is a correction and when it is a change
Your situationWhat it isUsual route
One English record differs from the restA correctionThe office that holds the odd record
The English line and the Hindi line on Aadhaar do not matchA transliteration errorAadhaar update, with no Gazette
English records split between two spellings, with no base record to settle itTwo forms of one namePick one. A Gazette with an alias may be needed
Every English record has one spelling and you now prefer anotherA change of nameGazette change of name
The Hindi itself differs between recordsMore than transliterationCheck which Hindi form your oldest record carries

The Aadhaar rules allow a correction of a transliteration error with a supporting document and no Gazette. So for the record most other offices check against, this kind of difference can be put right directly.

A spelling you prefer is not a correction. If all your English papers say Deepak and you would like Dipak, nothing is wrong with your papers. That is a change of name, and it uses one of the two name changes Aadhaar allows in a lifetime.

Which English Spelling Should You Keep?

There is no "official" English spelling of a Hindi name. The right one for you is the one on your firmest record. Work down this list and stop at the first paper you hold.

  1. Your passport, if you hold one. It is the hardest to change and the one read abroad.
  2. Your class 10 certificate, in its English line. Boards, employers and the passport office treat it as the base for an adult.
  3. Your birth certificate, if it carries your name in English.
  4. The spelling most of your English papers carry.

Then keep it. Write that spelling on a slip, letter by letter, with the Hindi beside it, and copy from the slip onto every form.

  • If your father's papers and yours spell the surname differently, you need not change yours to match his. Each person's base record governs.
  • For your children, give the school the surname in the spelling you have settled on, so the next generation starts with one.
  • Do not move to a "better" spelling because a clerk or a website suggests it. Matching your base record matters more than any rule of spelling.

Which Script Does Each Record Use?

Knowing where your name is held in Hindi and where in English shows where a difference can creep in. This is the usual position.

Which script common records use for a name
RecordHindiEnglishNote
AadhaarYesYesBoth lines are printed. They can disagree
PANNoYesEnglish only
PassportNoYesEnglish only, in two boxes
Voter IDYesYesBoth, typed by the election office
School and board certificatesOftenOftenDepends on the board and the year
Birth certificateOftenSometimesOlder ones are often in Hindi only
State certificatesYesSometimesCaste, residence and income certificates
Land and family recordsYesNoKept in Hindi at the tehsil and the local body
Bank accountNoYesEnglish, taken from the papers you gave

The pattern is plain. Your Hindi records are usually the consistent ones. The English spelling is first fixed by whichever English record was made first, and that is often a school certificate or an Aadhaar enrolment.

How Do You Bring Your Papers in Line?

Step 1: Write down your name in Hindi

As your Hindi records carry it. Check that the Hindi is the same on all of them.

Step 2: List every English spelling you find

Go through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, certificates, bank and voter ID, and note the spelling on each.

Step 3: Choose the spelling to keep

The one on your passport or class 10 certificate, or the one most papers carry.

Step 4: Correct Aadhaar, if it is the odd one

At an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with the supporting document. Read the English and the Hindi line before the operator submits.

Step 5: Correct PAN next

Through the correction application, so Aadhaar and PAN match letter for letter.

Step 6: Correct the other odd records

The bank, the voter ID, the licence and the rest, each at its own office.

Step 7: Leave old papers that cannot be changed

Keep them with a correction affidavit or the corrected identity proof, to explain the difference if asked.

Where an office wants a sworn statement that both spellings are you, see name spelling correction affidavit.

Why Do the Two Lines on Aadhaar Matter?

An Aadhaar letter prints your name twice: once in English and once in the local language, which in Uttarakhand is Hindi. People check the English line and never look at the other.

What goes wrong

  • The Hindi line is produced from the English entry and comes out as a different word
  • The English line is corrected at an update, and the Hindi line stays as it was
  • The Hindi line carries a spelling your Hindi certificates do not

What to do

  • Read both lines on the enrolment or update slip before you leave the centre
  • Ask the operator to show you the screen
  • If one line is wrong, have it corrected as a transliteration error, with a supporting document

An office that works in Hindi, such as a tehsil, will read the Hindi line. An office that works in English, such as a bank, will read the English one. Both lines have to be right.

Aadhaar allows a name update only twice in a lifetime. Check the form with care each time, so an update is not spent on a new mistake.

How Do You Choose an English Spelling for the First Time?

Some people have held only Hindi papers, and meet English for the first time at an Aadhaar enrolment, a passport application or a child's school admission. That is the moment to choose well.

  • If any English paper exists already, such as a class 10 certificate, use its spelling. Do not start a second one.
  • If none exists, choose the spelling your family already uses on English papers, so parents and children agree.
  • Decide the whole name: every word, its spelling and its order.
  • Write it down, and give that slip to whoever fills the form.
  • Read the printed result before you leave the counter.

Papers for use abroad

A Hindi certificate that has to be read outside India usually needs a translation into English. The English spelling in that translation must match your passport exactly, letter for letter. Tell the translator which spelling to use before the work starts, and ask the office abroad what kind of translation and attestation it accepts.

When Does a Spelling Difference Need a Gazette?

🏛️

An office asks in writing

A board, a university or an employer says it wants a Gazette notification before it corrects its record.

🔄

No base record settles it

Your English papers are split between two spellings, and neither set will move.

🌎

A passport or visa is held up

A degree in one spelling and a passport in another, and a foreign office wants one public proof.

📝

A certificate cannot be corrected

The board's time limit has passed, and you need a paper that links the certificate to your present spelling.

👨

A parent's name in your papers

Your marksheet spells your father's name one way and his own papers another, and the board wants Gazette proof.

✍️

You are choosing a new spelling

The spelling you want is on none of your papers. That is a change of name.

Two kinds of notice can apply. Where one record wrote the name wrongly, it is a public notice. Where two spellings have both been in real use and you are settling on one, it is a change of name notice with an alias. See name correction vs name change.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?

Use this only where the offices have not been able to settle the matter. The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Get the office's requirement in writing

Confirm that it wants a Gazette notification, and which spelling it treats as correct.

Step 2: Decide which notice fits

A public notice for a wrongly written name, or a change of name notice with an alias for two spellings in use.

Step 3: Sign the undertaking

Showing both spellings, your father's or husband's name and your address.

Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, in the matching wording. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form

Two typed copies of the right specimen, signed by you and two witnesses. Type each spelling exactly as its record shows it.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and supporting papers

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and an attested copy of the connected document for a public notice.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,400 for a public notice, or Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name with Rs 250 more for each alias. Confirm it before you pay.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then download the Gazette

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then check Part IV on egazette.gov.in each week.

A Gazette notice is printed in English. Check both spellings letter by letter on every page, because a typist will "correct" a one-letter difference without telling you.

Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used?

The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own practice, and state notices are often printed in Hindi. That matters for a difference that exists only in English.

Step 1: Ask the office which Gazette it accepts

A passport office, a central body or an office outside the state may want the Gazette of India.

Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private notice of this kind is being accepted.

Step 3: Ask in which language the notice is printed

If only in Hindi, ask how two English spellings will be shown.

Step 4: Ask for the papers and the fee, and submit as directed

Keep a photocopy of every page.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?

Common mistakes with a Hindi to English name spelling difference
MistakeWhat to do
Treating a transliteration difference as a name changeIt is usually a correction at the issuing office
Paying for a Gazette for a wrong letter in AadhaarHave Aadhaar corrected with a supporting document
Letting each clerk choose the English spellingCarry your spelling on a slip
Checking only the English line on AadhaarRead the Hindi line too
Changing to a "better" spellingMatch your base record
Correcting the passport to match a newer paperThe passport and class 10 certificate are the base
A translation that spells the name differently from the passportTell the translator the spelling first
Starting a child with a third spelling of the surnameGive the school the family's settled spelling
Using up an Aadhaar name update on a careless formRead the form before it is submitted

A typical case we handle: a driver from Tehri had every state paper in Hindi and only two in English, an Aadhaar that said "Bist" and a PAN that said "Bisht". His bank would not link the two. His class 10 certificate, in English, said "Bisht". He had the Aadhaar corrected as a transliteration error against that certificate, and the bank accepted both papers a few days later. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

People Also Ask About Hindi and English Spellings

Why is my name spelt differently in English on different documents?

Because a Hindi name can be written in English in several ways, and each office chose its own letters.

Which English spelling of my name is correct?

The one on your passport or class 10 certificate. There is no single official spelling of a Hindi name.

Is a different English spelling a name change?

Usually not. It is a transliteration difference, corrected at the office that holds the odd record.

How do I correct the Hindi name on my Aadhaar?

As a transliteration error, at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with a supporting document.

Do I need a gazette for a Hindi to English spelling difference?

Usually not. Only where an office asks for one in writing, or no base record settles it.

My father writes his surname differently from me. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. Each person's own base record governs. Keep one spelling for your own papers.

Can I change the spelling of my name in my passport?

Only by the change of name route. An Indian mission's guidance says no addition or deletion of spellings or words is allowed when a name is merely split; where it is involved, the change of name procedure applies, with two Government ID documents in the changed name and a Gazette notification or newspaper advertisement.

Will both spellings of my name be printed on my passport?

No. Only the real or official name is printed. The application form asks separately if you are known by any other names, so declare the other spelling there.

What does it cost to correct the Hindi line on Aadhaar?

A demographic update, which covers the name, costs Rs 75 when done on its own, and is free when done along with a biometric update, as UIDAI's fee list shows.

Are initials allowed in an Indian passport?

No. The passport form asks for the given name in full and says initials are not allowed, so write each word in the spelling you have settled on.

Can my parent's name be written in full in my passport?

Yes. An Indian mission's guidance says initials in a parent's name may be expanded into the full name, subject to proof.

Is submitting new documents to Aadhaar free?

UIDAI's fee list showed document update on the myAadhaar portal as free till 14 June 2026, and Rs 75 at a centre. One later report says the free window was extended. Check the portal for the current position.
