How Does a PAN Hold Your Name?
A PAN record does not keep a name as one line. The published form and its guidelines set it out in parts.
- Three parts. First name, middle name and last name, each in its own row.
- In full. The name is to be written fully expanded, as in your proof of identity. Initials are not permitted.
- The name on the card. The form has a separate line for the name as you would like it printed on the card.
- The name as per Aadhaar. The form also asks for the name as it stands in Aadhaar.
- No titles. Shri, Smt., Kumari and Dr. are left out.
Many PAN name problems are nothing more than a word in the wrong row: a surname typed as the first name, or a middle name left out. That is a correction, and it needs no Gazette.
The PAN number never changes with a name. A corrected e-PAN or card is issued under the same number.

Which Proof Is Asked For?
The form asks for proof of identity, proof of address, proof of date of birth, documentary proof in support of the change, and a copy of the PAN. For a change of name, the published list names these supporting documents.

- For a plain spelling correction, guides report that an identity proof showing the right spelling is used. The portal tells you what it wants when you file.
- Every proof must be in the name you are applying for, not the name being replaced.

Why Does Aadhaar Come Before PAN?
- The Gazette, where your change is one that needs it.
- Aadhaar, updated in person at a centre.
- PAN, brought in line with Aadhaar.
- The bank, investments and insurance, which check both.
The PAN form itself asks for your name as per Aadhaar, and the tax system links the two records. If you change PAN first, it stops matching an Aadhaar that still carries the old name, and the bank then sees two papers that disagree.
There is one exception worth knowing. Where Aadhaar is the paper with the mistake and PAN is right, correct Aadhaar and leave PAN alone. Do not move a correct PAN to match a wrong Aadhaar.
Since September 2026, Aadhaar sorts name updates into minor and major changes, and only a major change needs a Gazette there. PAN has its own list, set out above. A change that Aadhaar treats as minor may still be a "change of name" for PAN. Check both before you assume.
How Do You File the Request?
The request is filed with Protean or UTIITSL, online or at a PAN service centre. The form's name and number have been revised from time to time, so use the one the portal gives you.
Step 1: Update Aadhaar first, if the name is changing
And check that it now shows the name you want, in full.
Step 2: Open the changes or correction request
Reach the Protean or UTIITSL portal from the Income Tax Department's website, choose changes or correction in PAN data, and enter your PAN.
Step 3: Tick the name row
The form asks you to fill every column and tick the box beside each row to be changed.
Step 4: Enter the name in three parts
First, middle and last name, in full, with no initials and no title.
Step 5: Fill the name as per Aadhaar and the name for the card
Letter for letter as on your Aadhaar.
Step 6: Attach the proof and a copy of the PAN
The Gazette or the marriage certificate for a change, and the identity, address and date of birth proof the portal asks for.
Step 7: Pay the fee and submit
Keep the acknowledgement number to track the request.
Step 8: Check the new e-PAN or card
Read your name, your father's name and your date of birth, letter by letter.
Where you file on paper, the signed form and the papers go to the service provider as its instructions say. Online filing with Aadhaar authentication avoids the posting.
How Is a Surname Changed in PAN After Marriage?
- The published list names a marriage certificate among the papers for a married woman's change of name on account of marriage. A Gazette publication is another paper on the same list.
- So where you hold a marriage certificate, a Gazette is usually not needed for PAN.
- Update Aadhaar first. Aadhaar has its own route for a surname after marriage, with a prescribed affidavit.
- The father's name row stays your father's. A PAN has no place for a husband's name.
- Changing your surname is a choice. You may keep your name, and then nothing in the PAN changes.

If you change your first name as well as your surname at marriage, that goes beyond a change on account of marriage. Expect to be asked for a Gazette.
What If PAN and Aadhaar Do Not Match?
The two records are compared on your name, date of birth and gender. Where they differ, linking and some verifications fail.

What Follows Once PAN Is Corrected?
- Bank accounts. Give the branch the updated Aadhaar and PAN, and ask for new cards and cheque books.
- Your employer. So that salary and tax deducted are reported under the name on the PAN.
- Investments and insurance. Demat account, mutual funds, provident fund and policies, each on its own form.
- Your tax account. Check that your profile on the tax portal shows the corrected name.
- Loans and property. Tell the lender, and keep the paper that explains the change with your deeds.
Tax already deducted and returns already filed stay with your PAN number. They do not have to be redone because the name changed.
Why Must You Never Apply for a Second PAN?
A person may hold only one PAN. People who cannot get a name corrected sometimes apply afresh in the right name, and end up with two numbers.
- Holding more than one PAN can attract a penalty under the tax law.
- Your tax history, your bank accounts and your investments are tied to the first number.
- If you already hold two, surrender the extra one through the same request, which has a place for it.
How Do You Get the Gazette for a Change of Name?
PAN is a central record, so the Gazette of India is the one to use. The notice goes in Part IV.
Step 1: Confirm that your case needs a Gazette
A correction or a change on account of marriage usually does not.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
In full, in the three parts PAN will hold: first, middle and last.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and an undertaking showing the old and the new name.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar and PAN
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Download the published Gazette from egazette.gov.in, update Aadhaar with it, and then file the PAN request.

Will PAN Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
The published list speaks of the official Gazette and does not say which. PAN is a record of the central Government, so ask before you rely on a state notice.
