Father's Name Correction in a PAN Card in Uttarakhand
A wrong or shortened father's name on your PAN: how the correction request is filed, what proof is asked for, the option of the mother's name, and when a Gazette comes in.
A father's name correction in a PAN card is made on the form for changes or correction in PAN data, filed online with Protean or UTIITSL. You tick the father's name row, enter the name in full and attach proof. The PAN number stays the same. A Gazette usually matters only where your father has changed his name.

A father's name correction in a PAN card is a small job that people often overpay for. The PAN number does not change, no new PAN is made, and you can file the request yourself. This page explains father's name correction in a PAN card for people in Uttarakhand: the form, the proof, the cost and the cases that need more.
We do not issue or correct PAN cards. The Income Tax Department does that through its two service providers. For other records, read father's name change and correction in Uttarakhand.
How Does a PAN Carry the Father's Name?
The PAN record of an individual has a part for the details of parents. The form's own instructions say this about it.
- The father's name is a mandatory field for an individual.
- It is filled in three parts: first name, middle name and last name.
- A married woman gives her father's name there, and not her husband's.
- The applicant chooses which parent's name is printed on the card, the father's or the mother's. If no choice is made, the father's name is printed.
- Names are to be written in full. Initials are not permitted.
So the father's name sits in two places: in the Department's record, and in print on the card. A correction changes both, and a fresh card or e-PAN is issued with the same number.
When Does the Father's Name on a PAN Matter?
It can matter when
- The PAN card is your identity proof for a passport, a loan or a job
- An office compares the father's name on the PAN with your certificates
- A form copies the father's name from the PAN and it then spreads to other records
- A property or bank paper states "son of" or "daughter of" from the PAN
It usually does not affect
- Your PAN number, your tax filings or your refunds
- Linking PAN with Aadhaar, which compares your own details. Aadhaar holds no father's name
- Your bank account, which runs on your own name and number
So this is worth correcting, and there is rarely a rush. If a deadline is close, ask the office concerned if it will accept the PAN as it stands with another paper that shows your father's name correctly.
What Kind of Error Do You Have?
| The error | Example | Route |
|---|---|---|
| A wrong letter | Tirlok for Trilok | Correction request, with proof |
| A short form or initials | H. C. Joshi for Harish Chandra Joshi | Correction request. Names are to be in full |
| Parts in the wrong boxes | The surname typed as the first name | Correction request |
| The husband's name given as father | A married woman's PAN shows her husband | Correction request, with proof of her father's name |
| The father changed his own name | The PAN shows his old name | Correction request, with his Gazette |
| The mother's name is wanted on the card | You want the mother's name printed | The form's own option. Not a correction of the father's name |
| A different person is named | A step-father or guardian | A legal matter. Take advice |
The first four are plain corrections. The fifth rests on your father's own change of name. The last is not a PAN matter at all.
How Do You File the Correction?
The request is filed with one of the two service providers, Protean or UTIITSL, online or at a PAN service centre. The form's name and number have been revised from time to time, so use the one the portal gives you.
Step 1: Get your father's name from his own paper
Copy it from his Aadhaar or another identity proof, letter by letter, in full.
Step 2: Open the changes or correction request
On the Protean or the UTIITSL portal, choose the request for changes or correction in PAN data, and enter your PAN.
Step 3: Tick the father's name row
The form asks you to fill every column and tick the box beside the row you want changed. Tick only what is wrong.
Step 4: Enter the name in three parts
First name, middle name and last name, with no initials and no title such as Shri or Late.
Step 5: Choose the parent to be printed
Father or mother. If you leave it, the father's name is printed.
Step 6: Attach the proof and a copy of the PAN
Your identity, address and date of birth proof as the portal asks, the proof for the change, and a copy of your PAN card.
Step 7: Pay the fee and submit
Keep the acknowledgement number. It lets you track the request.
Step 8: Check the new e-PAN or card
Read the father's name and your own name, letter by letter, when it arrives.
Check your own name on the same form while you are there. If it also differs from your Aadhaar, correct both in one request.
Which Proof Is Asked For?
The form lists five kinds of paper: proof of identity, proof of address, proof of date of birth, documentary proof in support of other changes, and a copy of the PAN.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| The service provider's published list | For a change in a father's or mother's name, it names the publication of the name change in the official Gazette |
| Guides on the correction of a spelling | They report that a document showing the father's correct name is used, such as the applicant's matriculation certificate or the father's Aadhaar or passport |
| What we suggest | See what the portal asks for when you file. Keep ready a paper of your own that prints your father's name correctly, and his identity proof |
The two rows are not in conflict. The published list speaks of a change in the father's name, which is the case where he has taken a new name. A wrong letter in your PAN is a correction of your record against papers that already show his name. We could not confirm from the Department itself exactly which papers it accepts for a plain spelling correction, so do not take this table as final.
What If a Husband's Name Was Given in the Father's Row?
This happens often. A woman applies for a PAN after marriage, and the person filling the form writes her husband's name where the father's is asked for. The form's instructions are clear: a married woman gives her father's name there, and not her husband's.
- It is a correction. File the same request and tick the father's name row.
- Enter your father's name in full, as on his own papers or on your certificates.
- Attach a paper of yours that shows your father's name, such as your class 10 certificate.
- If your own surname on the PAN also needs to change after marriage, that is a separate row on the same form, with its own proof.
A PAN has no place for a husband's name. Offices that want to see the link to a husband read it from the marriage certificate. For a surname after marriage, see name change after marriage in Uttarakhand.
Can the Mother's Name Be Printed on the Card?
Yes. The form asks you to select the name of one parent to be printed on the PAN card, the father or the mother. This is a choice, not a correction.
- To print the mother's name, fill her name in the parents' part and select Mother as the name to be printed.
- If you select nothing, the father's name is printed.
- Choosing the mother's name for the card is not the same as removing the father's name from the record. The form still treats the father's name as a field to be filled.
- Where a mother is a single parent, ask the service provider how the father's field is to be handled in the current form.
If your aim is to have a different man shown as father, the choice of parent on the card does not do that, and neither does any correction request. That is a question for a lawyer.
What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| Fee for the correction request | About Rs 100 for an address in India, as commonly reported. The portal shows the current fee before you pay |
| The form itself | Free to download |
| PAN number | Stays the same |
| Time | As the service provider takes. Track it with the acknowledgement number |
| A Gazette, in the few cases that need one | Commonly Rs 1,400 for a public notice, or Rs 1,100 for the father's own change of name |
We could not confirm the exact fee from the Department, so the figure above is what guides report. If someone quotes you many times that for a "PAN father name correction", ask what the money is for. The filing can be done by you in one sitting.
What If Your Father Has Changed His Own Name?
Then your PAN was right when it was made. It shows the name your father had. To bring it up to date:
- Your father's Gazette notification is the proof of his change. The service provider's list names the Gazette for a change in a father's name.
- File the correction request, tick the father's name row, and enter his new name in full.
- Attach a copy of his Gazette and of his updated identity proof.
- You do not publish a Gazette of your own. Your name has not changed.
There is no duty that we know of to update a PAN because a parent changed a name. Do it where the difference is causing trouble, or when you are filing a correction for another reason anyway.
When Is a Gazette Needed for a Father's Name in PAN?
Your father changed his name
His own change of name notice in the Gazette is the proof. Usually he already has it.
The request is returned for want of proof
The service provider will not accept your other papers and asks for a Gazette publication.
No paper of yours shows his name correctly
Your certificates carry the same mistake, and something public is needed to settle the right spelling.
In the second and third cases, the notice that fits is a public notice stating that your father's name has been wrongly written in your records and what it actually is. Before you pay for one, ask the service provider in writing if it will accept such a notice for your request. See public notice for wrongly written name.
If the same wrong spelling is on your marksheet as well, correct that first. See father's name correction in an Uttarakhand Board marksheet.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this only where a Gazette has been asked for. PAN is a central record, so the Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Get the requirement in writing
Keep the service provider's message that asks for a Gazette publication, and confirm which spelling it treats as correct.
Step 2: Gather proof of both spellings
Your PAN card with the wrong spelling, and your father's identity proof with the right one. Get copies attested.
Step 3: Sign the undertaking
You are the applicant. It shows the correct and the wrong name, and your own details.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper, showing the details of the case. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the public notice form
Two typed copies of the specimen, keeping "my father" and naming the record. Sign with two witnesses.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and supporting papers
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with your identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and an attested copy of the connected document.
Step 7: Pay the public notice charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,400. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then file the PAN request again
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. When it is published, attach the Gazette to a fresh correction request.
Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used for a PAN?
The published list speaks of the official Gazette and does not say which one. PAN is a record of the central Government, so ask before you rely on a state notice.
Step 1: Ask the service provider which Gazette it accepts
Put the question in writing through its helpdesk and keep the reply.
Step 2: Choose the Gazette of India if there is any doubt
It is accepted across the country.
Step 3: If a state notice is accepted, contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private public notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the format, the papers and the fee, and submit
Keep a photocopy of every page.
Step 5: Download the notice and attach it to the request
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Applying for a new PAN to get the name right | Never. File a correction. One person may hold only one PAN |
| Paying for a Gazette before filing the request | File first, and see what is asked for |
| Writing the father's name with initials again | Write every word in full |
| Typing Shri or Late in the name | Leave titles out |
| Ticking rows that are already right | Tick only the row to be changed |
| Entering the husband's name in the father's row | The father's name goes there, for a married woman too |
| Copying the father's name from memory | Copy it from his own identity proof |
| Not checking your own name on the same form | Correct both in one request |
| Using an unknown website that looks official | Use the Protean or UTIITSL portal, reached from the Income Tax Department's site |
A typical case we handle: a schoolteacher in Rudrapur had her husband's name printed as her father's on a PAN made soon after her wedding. An agent told her she needed a Gazette and quoted a large sum. She filed the correction request herself, ticked the father's name row, entered her father's name from her class 10 certificate and attached that certificate. No Gazette was involved. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

For almost every father's name correction in a PAN, you need only the correction request and a paper that shows the right name. We are useful only where a Gazette publication has been asked for. Send us the message you received and we will tell you, free, what it is asking.
