Name Change in Bank Records in Uttarakhand
How a bank changes the name on an account: the Reserve Bank's rule on a changed name, the two papers it names, what to carry to the branch, and everything else at the bank that has to follow.
A name change in bank records is made at the branch, on a written request with proof. The Reserve Bank's rules treat an identity document as valid after a change of name, where it is supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a Gazette notification showing the change. A spelling slip is corrected on your identity papers.

A name change in bank records is one of the few on this site where the regulator has named the proof in plain words. That makes the bank counter easier than most. This page explains name change in bank records for account holders in Uttarakhand: the rule, the papers, the order of work, and what to do when a branch will not act.
We do not deal with banks. We prepare the Gazette notification, which is one of the two papers the Reserve Bank names. For the identity papers that come before the bank, read name change in Aadhaar card in Uttarakhand.
What Is the Reserve Bank's Rule on a Changed Name?
Banks identify customers under the Reserve Bank of India's directions on knowing the customer. Those directions list the identity papers a bank accepts, called officially valid documents, and add an explanation for people whose names have changed.
| Point | What the directions say |
|---|---|
| Officially valid documents | The passport, the driving licence, proof of possession of Aadhaar number, the voter's identity card, the job card issued under the rural employment scheme, and the letter from the National Population Register |
| A changed name | A document is deemed to be officially valid even if there is a change in the name after it was issued, provided it is supported by a marriage certificate issued by the State Government or a Gazette notification indicating the change |
| What banks were told | They may accept a copy of the marriage certificate or the Gazette notification, together with a certified copy of the identity document in the existing name |
| When it applies | While opening an account, and during the periodic updating of customer details |
Read the second row closely. A bank does not need your identity paper to be in the new name first. An identity paper in the old name, with a marriage certificate or a Gazette notification beside it, is enough under the rule.
The Reserve Bank said it made this explanation because banks and individuals had written to it about the difficulty people faced after changing a name on marriage or otherwise. The directions have been reissued since, so the clause number in the current text may differ. The substance is what a branch works to.
What at a Bank Carries Your Name?
The account itself
- The customer record, under one customer number
- Every account under it: savings, current, deposits
- The passbook and the cheque book
- The debit card and any credit card
- Internet and mobile banking, and the payment address linked to them
- The signature on record
Around the account
- The record in the central registry of customer details, with its identifier
- Fixed and recurring deposit receipts
- Loan accounts and the papers securing them
- The locker agreement
- Nominations, where you are named as someone's nominee too
- Standing instructions, mandates and the tax deducted against your PAN
A branch changes the customer record, and most of the rest follows from it. A few do not: a card has to be reissued, a deposit receipt endorsed or reissued, and a loan document may need a supplementary paper. Ask the branch to go down the list with you.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Example | Proof | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The bank typed the name wrongly | Passbook: Rajesh Sing. Papers: Rajesh Singh | Your identity papers, as given at opening | No |
| The account was opened in a short or home name | Account: Guddi. Aadhaar: Kamla Devi | Identity papers. The bank may ask for a declaration, or more | Sometimes |
| A surname on marriage | Sunita Bisht to Sunita Rawat | The marriage certificate issued by the State Government | No |
| A new name by choice | Rakesh Kumar to Aarav Negi | The Gazette notification | Yes |
| Aadhaar and PAN differ from each other | Two spellings on two identity papers | Correct them first, then the bank | No |
| A minor's account, the child now grown | Opened in a pet name by a parent | The account holder's own identity papers on attaining majority | No |
| The account holder has died | The passbook and the death certificate differ | A claim by the nominee or heirs, not a change of name | Ask the bank |
The third and fourth rows are the two the Reserve Bank's explanation speaks to. For the others, the bank goes by the identity papers and its own policy.
What Is the Order of Work?
The bank sits in the middle of your records. Some have to be right before it, and many depend on it afterwards.
- The paper that records the change. The marriage certificate, or the Gazette notification.
- Aadhaar. Most banks check identity through it.
- PAN. The bank reports interest and tax against PAN, and the two names are compared.
- The bank. The customer record, then the items that have to be reissued.
- Everything that pays into or out of the account. Salary, pension, provident fund, insurance, mutual funds, the demat account, loan instalments.
The Reserve Bank's rule means a bank can act on step 1 with your old identity paper, without waiting for steps 2 and 3. In practice a branch that checks Aadhaar and PAN online will find the mismatch, so doing them first avoids a second visit.
How Do You Apply at the Branch?
Step 1: Go to the branch that holds the account
A change of name is made at the home branch at most banks. Ask if another branch can take the request.
Step 2: Ask for the bank's form for a change in customer details
Many banks have one. Otherwise a written request to the branch manager serves.
Step 3: State the name as it stands and as it should read
With the customer number and every account number under it.
Step 4: Attach the proof
Self-attested copies, with the originals shown at the counter. The list is in the next section.
Step 5: Give a fresh signature, if yours has changed
The bank records the new signature against the old one. Sign in both at the counter if asked.
Step 6: Take an acknowledgement
A stamped copy of your request, or a service request number.
Step 7: Ask for the items that have to be reissued
A new passbook, cheque book and cards, and endorsement of deposit receipts. Surrender the old cheque leaves.
Step 8: Check the record, then tell those who pay you
See the new name in the passbook and in internet banking. Then give the change to your employer, pension office and every body that credits or debits the account.
Which Proof Should You Carry?
Each bank has its own form and may ask for more. This is the core.
| Request | Carry |
|---|---|
| A spelling correction | An officially valid document showing the right spelling, and PAN |
| A surname on marriage | The marriage certificate issued by the State Government, with an officially valid document in the existing name, or one already in the new name |
| A change of name | The Gazette notification, with an officially valid document in the existing name, or one already in the new name |
| All requests | PAN, the passbook, unused cheque leaves, cards, a recent photograph and the written request |
- The rule speaks of a marriage certificate issued by the State Government. A registered marriage certificate meets that. A priest's certificate or a wedding card does not.
- A Gazette notification is published online. Carry a clear print of the published issue.
- An affidavit alone is not one of the two papers the rule names. A bank may take one for a small spelling, at its discretion.
What Is the Position After Marriage?
- A woman who takes her husband's surname shows the bank her marriage certificate, with her identity paper in the maiden name. Under the Reserve Bank's explanation, that is enough. No Gazette is needed.
- She does not have to change her name at the bank at all. An account in the maiden name stays valid.
- If she changes it, she should change PAN to the same name, since interest is reported against PAN.
- Where the marriage was never registered, register it. In Uttarakhand this is done on the state's portal under the present law, as covered on our marriage page.
- A joint account with the husband is a separate request from a change of name.
Where a bank asks a married woman for a Gazette, show the branch the Reserve Bank's wording. It names the marriage certificate as an alternative. See name change after marriage in Uttarakhand.
What About Cheques and Payments in the Old Name?
- A cheque drawn in your old name after the account has changed. Banks commonly collect it where the account's history shows the earlier name. Tell the branch at the time of the change that such cheques may come.
- A cheque with your name misspelt. A small difference is usually collected at the bank's discretion. A large one is returned. Ask the drawer for a fresh cheque.
- Electronic credits. These go by account number, but some systems compare the beneficiary's name. Give payers your name exactly as the bank now has it.
- Refunds from the tax department and Government transfers. These compare the name on the account with PAN or Aadhaar. A mismatch returns the money.
- Your own old cheque leaves. Surrender them. Do not issue cheques printed in the old name.
If you use two forms of your name in business, a Gazette notice stating both, joined by alias, gives the bank a public paper to keep on record. See alias name in a gazette notification.
What About Joint Accounts, Loans, Deposits and Lockers?
| Item | A point to note |
|---|---|
| Joint account | The holder whose name has changed applies. The bank may ask the other holder to sign as well |
| Fixed deposits | Receipts in the old name are endorsed or reissued. Ask before maturity, not at it |
| Loans | The bank may take a supplementary agreement or a declaration. Property papers given as security stay in the name they were made in, with the linking paper |
| Lockers | The locker agreement and the access record are updated. Carry the key and identity proof |
| Credit cards | Often run on a separate system. Raise a separate request |
| Nominations | File afresh if your nominee's name has changed, or you are the nominee on someone else's account |
| Demat and mutual funds | Separate records, which follow the bank and PAN. Each has its own form |
| Post office savings | The post office follows its own procedure. Ask the postmaster |
A customer with accounts at several banks applies to each. The central registry of customer details is meant to carry an update across institutions, but do not rely on that. Check each one.
What If the Branch Will Not Act?
- Give the request in writing, and keep the acknowledgement. An oral refusal cannot be taken further.
- Ask for the reason in writing. Often the branch wants one more paper, and says so.
- Show the Reserve Bank's explanation, where you have given a marriage certificate or a Gazette notification with your identity paper and are still refused.
- Write to the bank's grievance officer. Every bank publishes the name and address, and a time within which it replies.
- Complain to the Reserve Bank's ombudsman, if the bank does not resolve it within the time its scheme gives, or you are not satisfied. The complaint is made online and is free.
A bank is entitled to be careful with a change of name, since accounts are opened and emptied by fraud in changed names. A branch that asks for originals, a fresh signature and a photograph is doing its job. One that refuses the two papers the regulator names is not.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this for a change of name that is not on marriage. The Reserve Bank's rule says Gazette notification, and the Gazette of India is accepted by every bank in the country.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a marriage or a spelling
Those two need no Gazette.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The same spelling for Aadhaar, PAN and the bank.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, with Rs 250 more for each alias. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then go to the bank
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Print the published Gazette, update Aadhaar and PAN, and take all of them to the branch.
Would a Bank Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
The rule says Gazette notification and does not say which. A state notice is a Gazette notification. PAN and the passport are the reason most people choose the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Ask your branch if it accepts a state Gazette
Most go by the wording of the rule, but ask.
Step 2: Think about PAN, the passport and other banks
If one Gazette has to serve them all, choose the Gazette of India.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Account Holders Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Getting a Gazette for a surname on marriage | The marriage certificate is named in the rule |
| Offering only an affidavit for a change of name | The rule names a marriage certificate or a Gazette notification |
| Changing the bank and leaving PAN | Interest and tax are reported against PAN |
| Making an oral request at the counter | Apply in writing and take an acknowledgement |
| Using old cheque leaves | Surrender them and take a new book |
| Forgetting deposits, cards and the locker | Go down the whole list with the branch |
| Not telling the employer or pension office | Give them the name exactly as the bank now has it |
| Opening a second account in the new name in place of changing the first | Change the existing customer record |
| Accepting an oral refusal | Ask for the reason in writing, then escalate |
A typical case we handle: a shopkeeper in Rishikesh changed his first name by Gazette for personal reasons. His bank asked for his Aadhaar in the new name before it would act, and the Aadhaar centre wanted time. We showed him the Reserve Bank's wording. He gave the branch a written request with the Gazette notification and his driving licence in the old name, and cited the rule. The branch changed the customer record, and he brought the new Aadhaar when it came. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
What is a lawyer's job, not ours
A deceased holder's account, a disputed joint account, a loan in dispute, and a complaint that the ombudsman has rejected.

Name Change in Bank Records: The Short Version
A bank changes the name on a customer record at the branch, on a written request. The Reserve Bank's rule accepts an identity document in the old name where it is supported by a marriage certificate issued by the State Government or a Gazette notification. So a married surname needs the marriage certificate, a change of name needs the Gazette, and a spelling needs only your identity papers.
Update PAN with it, take new cheques and cards, and tell everyone who pays into the account. To find out which paper your bank will need, send your details on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
