Name Mismatch on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal in Uttarakhand
When the tax portal will not link your Aadhaar, validate your bank account or release a refund because a name does not match: which record the portal follows, which one to correct, and in what order.
A name mismatch on the income tax e-filing portal is never corrected on the portal itself. The portal shows the name held against your PAN. Where Aadhaar or your bank account differs from it, correct that record, or correct PAN, until all three agree. Then link Aadhaar and validate the bank account again.

A name mismatch on the income tax e-filing portal shows up as a message, not as a wrong name: Aadhaar will not link, the bank account fails validation, or a refund is marked restricted. This page explains name mismatch on the income tax e-filing portal for taxpayers in Uttarakhand, and which record is the one to move.
We do not file returns or deal with the tax department. Nothing here needs a Gazette unless you have in fact changed your name. For the PAN correction itself, read name change in PAN card in Uttarakhand.
Why Is PAN the Anchor?
The tax department knows a taxpayer by PAN. Every return, payment, deduction and refund is filed against that number. The name that goes with it is the name in the PAN database.
- The portal's profile shows the name as per PAN. A taxpayer does not type it, and cannot edit it there.
- A return is filed in the name as per PAN, whatever the taxpayer's other papers say.
- Every other record the portal touches, Aadhaar, the bank account, the tax deducted by an employer, is compared with PAN.
- So a name is changed at the source, through the PAN correction process, and the portal then picks it up.
That makes the first question simple. Is the name on your PAN the right one? If it is, bring everything else to it. If it is not, correct PAN first, and do nothing on the portal until that is done.
Where Does the Portal Compare Names?
| Checkpoint | What is compared | What a mismatch does |
|---|---|---|
| Linking Aadhaar with PAN | Name, date of birth and gender on Aadhaar against PAN | The linking fails. An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative |
| Validating a bank account | The account holder's name and PAN at the bank against PAN | Validation fails. Refunds go only to a validated account |
| Issuing a refund | The same, at the time of payment | The refund is restricted or fails |
| Verifying a return with an Aadhaar code | Aadhaar linked with PAN | Not available until linking succeeds |
| Credit for tax deducted | The PAN quoted by the deductor | A wrong PAN sends the credit elsewhere. A wrong spelling does not |
| Registering as a legal heir or representative | The dead person's PAN and death certificate, and the heir's PAN | The request is rejected |
As the portal's guidance is reported, the reasons it lists for a failed bank validation include a mismatch in name between PAN and bank records, and PAN not being linked with the account at the bank.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Which record to correct | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| PAN is right, Aadhaar has a different spelling | Aadhaar, at a centre | No |
| Aadhaar is right, PAN has a different spelling | PAN, through the correction process | No |
| PAN and Aadhaar agree, the bank account differs | The bank's record, then validate again | No |
| The bank has no PAN on the account, or a wrong one | Give the bank your PAN, then validate again | No |
| You married and changed your surname on Aadhaar only | PAN and the bank, on the marriage certificate | No |
| You have changed your name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, PAN and the bank | Yes |
| The employer's form shows your name wrongly, with the right PAN | The employer's own record. The tax credit is not affected | No |
Six of the seven rows are settled by correcting an ordinary record at its own office. The portal then has to be asked to check again, which is the step people miss.
How Do You Put It Right?
The portal's menus are revised often. This is the order of work.
Step 1: Sign in and read your profile
Note the name exactly as the portal shows it. That is the name as per PAN.
Step 2: Put Aadhaar and the bank passbook beside it
Compare letter by letter, with spaces, initials and the order of the words.
Step 3: Decide which name is right
For most working people, the name on the class 10 certificate. Choose one, and bring the others to it.
Step 4: Correct PAN, if PAN is the odd one
Through the PAN correction process, with Aadhaar as proof. Wait for the update.
Step 5: Correct Aadhaar, if Aadhaar is the odd one
At an Aadhaar centre, with proof of the right name.
Step 6: Correct the bank's record, and see that your PAN is on the account
By a written request at the branch.
Step 7: Link Aadhaar with PAN again, and validate the bank account again
Each was refused on the old data. Ask the portal to check afresh.
Step 8: Ask for the refund to be reissued, if one failed
The portal has a request for this, once a validated account is on record.
What If Aadhaar Will Not Link With PAN?
- Linking compares the name, date of birth and gender on the two records. A difference in any of them stops it.
- An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative. Refunds are held, and tax is deducted at a higher rate, as the rules are reported.
- Correct whichever record is wrong, then try again on the portal.
- Where the two now agree and the link still fails, guides report that the department's help points to biometric authentication at the PAN service providers' designated centres.
- A fee is charged for late linking. The portal shows the current amount and how to pay it.
What If the Bank Account Fails Validation?
A refund is paid only into a bank account that the portal has validated. Validation is a check with the bank that the account belongs to the holder of that PAN.
| What the portal shows | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Name mismatch, or a restricted refund | The bank's name for you differs from PAN | Correct the bank's record or PAN, then validate again |
| PAN and account linkage failed | The bank has no PAN, or a wrong PAN, on the account | Give the bank your PAN, then validate again |
| Account does not exist | A wrong account number or branch code was typed | Enter the right details and validate again |
- The account has to be your own. A refund is not paid into a spouse's or a parent's account.
- A joint account works where you are a holder and your PAN is on it.
- An account opened on Aadhaar alone, with no PAN given, fails for that reason and not for a name. Ask the branch to add your PAN.
- After the bank corrects its record, give it a day or two before validating again.
What About Tax Deducted, and the Yearly Statement?
Employers, banks and others who deduct tax report it against the PAN you gave them. The portal's yearly statement gathers these by PAN.
- The credit follows the PAN, not the spelling. If your employer's certificate spells your name oddly but quotes your PAN correctly, the tax is credited to you.
- A wrong PAN is the real problem. If the deductor quoted another person's PAN, or none, the tax does not appear in your statement. Only the deductor can correct that, by revising its own statement.
- Check the statement before filing. Compare it with your salary certificate and your bank's interest certificates.
- Ask the employer to correct its record all the same. The same record feeds the provident fund and your service papers.
- After a change of name, give every deductor the updated PAN card. The number is the same.
So a misspelt name on a salary certificate is an annoyance, and a missing entry in the yearly statement is a loss. Chase the second.
What Happens After a Change of Name?
- The PAN number never changes. Only the name against it does.
- Returns already filed stay as they are, in the name of the time. Nothing has to be refiled.
- Refunds and demands of earlier years continue against the same PAN.
- The order is: the paper recording the change, then Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then the portal.
- A married woman who keeps her maiden name on PAN need do nothing at all. If she changes Aadhaar, PAN has to follow, or the link breaks.
- After PAN is updated, sign in and see that the profile shows the new name before you file.
The commonest self-inflicted mismatch is a surname changed on Aadhaar after marriage and nowhere else. Aadhaar and PAN then disagree, and the portal stops. Change both, or neither. See name change after marriage in Uttarakhand.
What About a Taxpayer Who Has Died?
- A return for the year of death, and any refund due, is handled by a legal heir, who registers on the portal as the dead person's representative.
- The portal asks for the death certificate, the dead person's PAN, the heir's PAN and proof of being the heir.
- The name on the death certificate is compared with the name on the dead person's PAN. A difference leads to a query or a rejection.
- Where the death certificate is the odd paper, have the Registrar correct it. The dead person's PAN can no longer be corrected.
- The refund is then paid to the heir's own validated account.
See name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.
What If It Still Fails?
- Read the exact message. The portal says which check failed. Copy the words.
- Confirm each record has in fact changed. Download the updated Aadhaar and PAN, and ask the bank for a statement header.
- Wait a few days, and try again. Databases take time to carry an update across.
- Raise a grievance on the portal, with the message and copies of the three records.
- Call the portal's helpdesk, whose numbers are on its site.
- Ask a tax practitioner where a refund of size is stuck, or a notice has come.
Use only the department's own portal. Messages and calls offering to "release your refund" for a fee or a code are fraud. The department does not ask for a PIN, a password or a card number.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?
Only where you have changed your name by choice. The portal does not ask for a Gazette. Aadhaar and PAN do, for a major change, and the portal follows PAN.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a mismatch between records
A mismatch is cured by correcting a record. A Gazette does nothing for it.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The same spelling for Aadhaar, PAN and the bank.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, and check the portal's profile before you next file.
Plan it away from the filing season. A PAN update in the weeks before the due date can leave Aadhaar, PAN and the bank out of step just when a return has to go in.
Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?
Not to the portal. The question is only which Gazette the PAN service and Aadhaar accept, and the live PAN page deals with that.
Step 1: Read what the PAN correction form lists as proof of a changed name
It names a Gazette publication among its documents.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, the passport and the bank
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Taxpayers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Looking for a place to edit the name on the portal | Correct PAN at its source |
| Getting a Gazette for a mismatch between records | Correct the odd record. No Gazette is needed |
| Changing a surname on Aadhaar only, after marriage | Change PAN and the bank too, or none |
| Correcting the record and not asking the portal to check again | Link and validate afresh |
| Giving a relative's bank account for a refund | It has to be your own, with your PAN on it |
| Applying for a new PAN | Never. Correct the one you have |
| Worrying about the spelling on a salary certificate | Check that the PAN on it is right |
| Doing all this in the last week before the due date | Check the profile months ahead |
| Paying someone who promises to release a refund | Use only the department's portal |
A typical case we handle: a nurse in Dehradun changed her surname on Aadhaar after marriage and left PAN and her salary account as they were. The next year her Aadhaar would not link, and her refund was held. She asked us for a Gazette. She did not need one. She corrected PAN and her bank record on her marriage certificate, linked Aadhaar again, validated the account again and asked for the refund to be reissued. It came. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
What is a tax practitioner's job, not ours
Filing or revising a return, answering a notice, a deductor's wrong PAN, and a refund that is stuck for reasons other than a name.
When you do not need us
For any mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar and the bank, always. Each is corrected at its own office. We are useful only where you have changed your name and Aadhaar and PAN need a Gazette first.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The portal is used from anywhere. For the identity papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

How do I change my name on the income tax e-filing portal?
You cannot, there. Correct PAN, and the portal shows the new name.
Why is my bank account validation failing on the income tax portal?
Usually the bank's name for you differs from PAN, or your PAN is not on the account.

As guides report, the refund is held, commonly for a name mismatch between PAN and the bank.

The name, date of birth or gender differs between them.
Does a spelling mistake in Form 16 affect my tax credit?
Not if the PAN on it is right.
Is a gazette needed to fix a name mismatch on the tax portal?
No. Only a real change of name needs one, for Aadhaar and PAN.
Is the Income-tax Act, 1961 still in force?
No. The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026. Income earned up to 31 March 2026 is still dealt with under the 1961 Act, and income from 1 April 2026 under the new Act. The name on PAN works the same way under both.
What is the tax year under the new Act?
The new Act replaces the old pair of previous year and assessment year with a single tax year, such as tax year 2026-27. Your PAN and the name against it do not change.
Which form is used for a PAN application now?

What is the fee for linking Aadhaar with PAN late?
Reports put it at Rs 1,000, paid through e-Pay Tax on the portal before the link request. Pay only on the department's own portal.
What can I not do with an inoperative PAN?
Reports say returns cannot be filed or verified with an inoperative PAN. Refunds are held and tax may be deducted at a higher rate until the PAN is made operative again.

The reasons the portal lists for a failed bank validation are as a newspaper reports the department's guidance. The validation errors, the restricted refund status and the biometric route for linking are as tax guides report them. We did not read the portal's help pages directly, and its menus change. The notes on tax deducted and on a taxpayer who has died are general guidance. This is not tax advice.

Name Mismatch on the Tax Portal: The Short Version
The tax portal follows PAN, and its name cannot be edited there. Where Aadhaar will not link, a bank account will not validate or a refund is held, find which of PAN, Aadhaar and the bank is the odd one, correct it at its own office, and then ask the portal to check again. A wrong spelling on a salary certificate does not matter if the PAN on it is right.
No Gazette corrects a mismatch. To find out which record to correct, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
