Name Change in Aadhaar Card in Uttarakhand

How a name is corrected or changed in Aadhaar under the procedure in force from September 2026: which changes are minor, which need a Gazette, the two-update limit and what to carry.

Quick answer

A name change in Aadhaar card records is made at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, not online. Under the procedure in force from September 2026, a minor change needs only an identity document, and a major change of name needs a Gazette notification. A name can usually be updated twice in a lifetime. The fee is reported as Rs 75.

A name in Aadhaar is updated at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, where a minor change needs a proof of identity and a major change needs a Gazette notification.

A name change in Aadhaar card records is the step most other offices wait for, because the bank, the PAN system and many forms check a name against Aadhaar. This page explains name change in Aadhaar card records for people in Uttarakhand, under the revised procedure that UIDAI brought into effect in September 2026, as it has been reported.

We have not read the procedure in UIDAI's own text, so treat this page as a guide and the Aadhaar centre as the authority. For the Gazette step, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

What Changed in September 2026?

News reports say UIDAI issued a revised standard operating procedure for name updates, in effect from 18 September 2026, replacing its 2021 procedure. The main points, as reported:

  • Name updates are sorted into minor and major changes, with different papers for each.
  • Surname changes after marriage or divorce have their own route, with a prescribed affidavit.
  • Data-entry errors have their own route, with a prescribed affidavit.
  • A major change, meaning a complete change of name or one that amounts to a different identity, needs a Gazette notification.
  • There are separate provisions for a name change after a change of gender, and for a child whose Aadhaar still says "Baby of".
  • The update is made at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an enrolment and update centre, with biometric authentication.

This matters for what you may have read elsewhere, on this site too. Some changes that people were told needed a Gazette are now classed as minor. Others that centres once did on any paper now need one.

Ask the centre which category your change falls in before you prepare anything. The category decides the papers. An hour's enquiry can save the cost of a Gazette, or save a wasted visit without one.

What Are the Kinds of Name Update?

This table sets out the categories as reported. The names in it are only examples of form.

Kinds of name update in Aadhaar under the procedure in force from September 2026, as reported
KindExamplePapers reportedGazette?
Minor changeR. P. Singh to Ram Prasad Singh. Bist to BishtA proof of identity documentNo
Surname after marriage or divorceSunita Bisht to Sunita RawatThe prescribed affidavit and proof of identityNo
Data-entry errorThe paper you gave was right. The operator typed it wronglyThe prescribed affidavit and proof of identity or of relationshipNo
Hindi line wrong, English rightThe English name is correct and the Hindi reads differentlyA separate processNo
Child shown as "Baby of"A temporary entry made at birthA separate provisionNo
Major changeRakesh Kumar to Aarav NegiA Gazette notification and identity documentsYes

Only the last row needs a Gazette. That is the row where we can be of use. For the rest, you need the centre and your own papers.

What Counts as a Minor Change?

As reported, the revised procedure treats these as minor changes, made on a valid proof of identity document.

Reported as minor

  • Expanding initials or abbreviations
  • Adding or removing a middle name or a last name
  • Changing the sequence of the names
  • A small spelling correction where the name sounds the same
  • Removing dots from a name
  • Correcting stray capital letters

What that means for common cases

  • Kr. to Kumar, or H. C. Joshi to Harish Chandra Joshi
  • A surname added where the record has only a first name
  • Rawat Suresh to Suresh Rawat
  • Bist to Bisht, or Pande to Pandey
  • Md. to Mohammad may fall here as an abbreviation. Ask the centre

The proof of identity you carry must show the name in the form you are asking for. Aadhaar cannot be the first record to carry a form that no other paper of yours has. So where your other papers do not yet show the name you want, the question of what comes first still has to be settled.

A minor change in Aadhaar does not by itself settle your other records. A bank or a passport office may still want more for the same change. See short name and full name difference in documents.

What Is the Route After Marriage or Divorce?

As reported, a surname change that follows a marriage or a divorce is handled apart from other changes.

  • The applicant gives a prescribed affidavit along with proof of identity.
  • The affidavit states that the change is linked to the marriage or the divorce, and does not amount to a change of identity.
  • The affidavit is in UIDAI's own format. Ask the centre for it. A general affidavit from a typist may not be accepted.
  • Carry your marriage certificate, or the divorce decree, as the paper behind the statement.

In Uttarakhand, a marriage is registered on the state's portal, and that certificate is the usual proof. If you are changing your first name as well as your surname, ask the centre if that is still within this route, or a major change.

See name change after marriage in Uttarakhand and name change after divorce in Uttarakhand.

What If It Was a Data-Entry Error?

This is for the case where the paper you gave at enrolment, or at an earlier update, carried the right name, and the Aadhaar record was typed wrongly.

  • As reported, an adult gives a prescribed affidavit with a proof of identity or a proof of relationship document.
  • For a minor, a different prescribed affidavit is used, with proof of identity or of relationship.
  • The point to prove is that your document was right and the entry was wrong.
  • Keep the enrolment or update slip if you still have it. It shows what was submitted.

Ask the centre if a correction made under this route is counted against your two name updates. We could not confirm that either way.

What Is a Major Change, and Why Does It Need a Gazette?

As reported, a complete change of name, or a change that amounts to a different identity, is a major change. The applicant gives a Gazette notification along with the prescribed identity documents.

Examples of changes likely to be treated as major
The changeWhy it is likely major
A new first nameThe person is known by a different name
A first name and a surname both changedNothing of the old name remains
A spelling changed so that it sounds differentIt is no longer the same name
A surname replaced, with no marriage or divorce behind itNot within the marriage route. Ask the centre
A name taken after a change of religionA new name

Where the line falls in a borderline case is for the centre to say. A numerology spelling such as Sonia to Soniya may be treated as a minor spelling change, since it sounds the same, or as a major one. Ask before you assume either.

For a major change the order is fixed: the Gazette first, then Aadhaar. UIDAI has said the address in the Gazette should match the address in your Aadhaar, so give your Aadhaar address in the notice.

How Many Times Can a Name Be Updated?

Limits on Aadhaar updates, as reported from UIDAI's guidance
FieldUsual limit
NameTwice in a lifetime
Date of birthOnce
GenderOnce
Address and mobile numberNo fixed limit
  • After the limit is used, a further change goes through an exception process, handled above the level of the centre.
  • Do not plan on the exception process. Treat each name update as scarce.
  • A woman who corrects a spelling now and takes a surname at marriage later may use both.
  • The limit is the person's own. An update made for a child counts against the child.

So read the form on the operator's screen before it is submitted, in English and in Hindi. A careless update spends one of two chances.

How Do You Update the Name in Aadhaar?

Step 1: Work out which kind of update yours is

Minor, marriage or divorce, a data-entry error, or major. Ask the centre if you are unsure.

Step 2: Collect the papers for that kind

A proof of identity in the right name, the prescribed affidavit where one applies, or the Gazette for a major change.

Step 3: Fix the exact name

Write it down in English and in Hindi, with the spelling, spacing and order you want.

Step 4: Go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an update centre

Book a slot where the centre takes appointments. Carry the originals.

Step 5: Check the operator's screen

Read both lines of the name, letter by letter, before the request is submitted.

Step 6: Authenticate and pay the fee

Biometric authentication is part of the process. The fee for a demographic update is reported as Rs 75.

Step 7: Keep the acknowledgement

It carries an update request number, which lets you track the request.

Step 8: Download the updated Aadhaar and check it

Then use it to update your PAN and your bank.

If a request is rejected, the rejection usually says why. Fix that one thing and apply again. Ask the centre if a rejected request is counted against the limit.

What About the Hindi Line?

Aadhaar prints your name in English and in the local language, which in Uttarakhand is Hindi. As reported, the revised procedure has a separate process for the case where the English name is correct and the regional language version has an error.

  • Read the Hindi line on your Aadhaar today. Many people never have.
  • If only the Hindi is wrong, tell the centre so. It should not be handled as a change of your English name.
  • When you update the English name, check that the Hindi line has moved with it.
  • Offices that work in Hindi, such as a tehsil, read the Hindi line.

See Hindi to English name spelling difference.

What About a Child's Aadhaar?

  • A child is enrolled on the birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar. Get the birth certificate right first.
  • Where a child's Aadhaar still shows "Baby of" with the mother's name, the revised procedure is reported to have a separate provision for putting in the child's real name.
  • A data-entry error in a minor's Aadhaar has its own prescribed affidavit, given by the parent.
  • A real change of a child's name, to a different name, is a major change. Both parents sign the Gazette papers, and the Gazette charge for a minor is commonly Rs 1,700.
  • Every name update counts against the child's own two.

See minor name change in Uttarakhand and name change for a newborn.

What Do You Do After Aadhaar Is Updated?

  1. PAN. File the request for changes or correction in PAN data, so the two match letter for letter.
  2. Bank accounts, insurance and investments. Once Aadhaar and PAN agree.
  3. Passport. A re-issue in the new name, with the papers on the Passport Seva list.
  4. Voter ID and driving licence.
  5. Employer, provident fund and property records.

An updated Aadhaar is strong proof, but each office applies its own rule. A change that Aadhaar treated as minor may still need a Gazette at a board or a passport office. Ask each office before you assume the updated Aadhaar is enough.

Your degrees and marksheets are not reissued. Keep with them the paper that explains the difference: the Gazette, or the marriage certificate.

How Do You Get the Gazette for a Major Change?

The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India, which is accepted across the country.

Step 1: Confirm with the centre that your change is major

If it is minor, you do not need this.

Step 2: Fix the exact new name

The spelling, spacing and order that will go into Aadhaar.

Step 3: Make the affidavit

State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your Aadhaar address. Sign before a notary.

Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and an undertaking showing the old and the new name.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the centre

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Download the published Gazette from egazette.gov.in and carry a printed copy with your identity documents.

Will Aadhaar Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?

The reports speak of a Gazette notification and do not say which Gazette. Ask before you choose.

Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre which Gazette it accepts

And look at UIDAI's current list of supporting documents.

Step 2: Think about your other records

For a passport, a central job or use outside the state, choose the Gazette of India.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice and take it to the centre

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

A typical case we handle: a driver from Kashipur came to us for a Gazette to expand "Kr." to "Kumar" on his Aadhaar, because a shop had told him every name change needed one. Expanding an abbreviation is reported as a minor change. He took his class 10 certificate, which had the full word, to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and had it updated. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For a minor change, a surname after marriage or divorce, or a data-entry error, you need the Aadhaar centre and your own papers. We are useful only for a major change, where a Gazette is asked for. Send us your present name and the name you want, and we will tell you, free, which side of the line it is likely to fall on.

Name Change in Aadhaar Card: The Short Version

Under the procedure reported to be in force from September 2026, a name update in Aadhaar is minor or major. Minor changes, such as expanding initials, adding a surname or a small spelling correction, need a proof of identity. Marriage, divorce and data-entry errors have their own prescribed affidavits. A complete change of name is major and needs a Gazette notification.

A name can usually be updated only twice, so check the screen before the request is submitted. To find out if your change needs a Gazette, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
