Baal Aadhaar Child Name Correction in Uttarakhand
A wrong, temporary or changed name in a child's Aadhaar: where the name comes from, what a parent carries to the centre, and why the updates at age 5 and 15 are the time to check.
A Baal Aadhaar child name correction is made at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with the child's birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar. A typing mistake or a "Baby of" entry is put right there, with no Gazette. Only a different name needs one. Each name update counts against the child's own limit of two.

A Baal Aadhaar child name correction is usually simple, and it is worth doing early, because the school and the passport office will copy the name from it. This page explains Baal Aadhaar child name correction for parents in Uttarakhand: where the name comes from, the kinds of mistake, and what the centre will ask for.
We do not update Aadhaar, and for most children no Gazette is involved. For adults, and for the procedure UIDAI brought in during September 2026, read name change in Aadhaar card in Uttarakhand.
What Is a Baal Aadhaar?
It is the Aadhaar issued to a child below five years of age. People often call it the blue Aadhaar. It carries the same kind of twelve-digit number as an adult's, and the number stays with the child for life.
- A child under five is enrolled with a photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and the birth certificate.
- Fingerprints and iris scans are not taken at that age, because they are not yet fully formed.
- They are taken later, in a mandatory biometric update when the child turns five, and again at fifteen.
- UIDAI's current guidance, as reported, makes the birth certificate compulsory for a child born on or after 1 October 2023.
The number does not change when the child grows up. So a wrong name on a Baal Aadhaar does not fall away with time. It becomes the name on the adult's Aadhaar unless someone corrects it.
Where Does the Name on a Child's Aadhaar Come From?
From the birth certificate, as the operator read it and typed it on the day of enrolment. That gives three places where a name can go wrong.
| Stage | What goes wrong | Where it is fixed |
|---|---|---|
| The birth certificate | It had no name, a home name or a wrong spelling when the child was enrolled | The Registrar first, then Aadhaar |
| The typing | The certificate was right and the operator typed it wrongly | The Aadhaar centre |
| The Hindi line | The English name is right and the Hindi reads differently | The Aadhaar centre |
Before you go to a centre, put the birth certificate next to the Aadhaar and see which of the three you have. If the birth certificate itself is wrong, correcting Aadhaar first only moves the mistake. See name change for a newborn.
Which Case Is Yours?
The routes below follow UIDAI's revised procedure of September 2026 as it has been reported. The centre decides which one applies.
| The situation | Example | Route reported | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Aadhaar says "Baby of" with the mother's name | Baby of Sunita Devi | A separate provision for giving the child's real name | No |
| The operator typed the name wrongly | Ananya typed as Anaya | A data-entry error, with the prescribed affidavit for a minor | No |
| A small spelling difference that sounds the same | Aarav and Arav | A minor change, on proof | No |
| A surname is to be added or dropped | Ananya to Ananya Joshi | Reported as a minor change, on proof | No |
| The Hindi line alone is wrong | The English is correct | A separate process | No |
| The parents want a different name | Gudiya to Ananya | A major change | Yes |
Five of the six rows need no Gazette. For those, a parent, the child's papers and one visit to a centre are the whole of it.
What If the Aadhaar Says "Baby of"?
Some children are enrolled within days of birth, before a name has been chosen. The record then carries a temporary entry such as "Baby of" followed by the mother's name. Reports of the revised procedure say it has a separate provision for these children.
- Get the name into the birth certificate first. Where the birth was registered without a name, the parents give the name to the Registrar. Under the model rules this is free within 12 months of registration.
- Collect the birth certificate that carries the name. Read it at the counter.
- Take it to an Aadhaar centre with the child and a parent's Aadhaar, and ask for the child's name to be entered in place of the temporary entry.
- Ask if this counts against the child's two name updates. We could not confirm that either way.
Giving a real name in place of "Baby of" is not a change of name. The child never had another name. Nobody should ask you for a Gazette for it.
What If the Operator Typed the Name Wrongly?
This is the most common case. The birth certificate you gave was right, and the Aadhaar came back with a letter wrong or a word missing.
- As reported, the revised procedure treats this as a data-entry error, with its own route.
- For a minor, a prescribed affidavit is given by the parent, with a proof of identity or a proof of relationship document.
- The affidavit is in UIDAI's own format. Ask the centre for it. A general affidavit from a typist may not be accepted.
- The birth certificate is the paper that shows what the name should have been.
- If you still have the enrolment slip, carry it. It shows what was submitted that day.
What If the Birth Certificate Was Changed After the Aadhaar Was Made?
Sometimes the Aadhaar matches the birth certificate as it stood on the day of enrolment, and the birth certificate has since been corrected or completed by the Registrar. The two papers now disagree, and neither office made a mistake.
- The corrected birth certificate is the base. Aadhaar is brought in line with it.
- Tell the centre plainly what happened, and carry the corrected certificate.
- Do not call it a typing error if it was not one. The routes and the affidavits are different.
- Where the difference is small, it is likely to be treated as a minor change. Where the name is wholly different, see the next section.
For a mother's or father's name on the birth certificate, see mother's name correction in a birth certificate.
What If the Parents Want a Different Name for the Child?
A complete change of name is reported as a major change, which needs a Gazette notification along with identity documents. For a child, that means the Gazette route for a minor.
- The parents or the legal guardian apply, because a child under 18 cannot.
- Both parents sign the affidavit. Where only one applies, a custody or guardianship order is needed.
- The Gazette of India charge for a minor is commonly Rs 1,700.
- The birth certificate usually stays as it is, and the Gazette is kept with it.
- This uses one of the child's two name updates in Aadhaar.
Before you go down this road, check the first row of the table again. If the birth was registered without a name, or the Registrar will correct the entry, you may not need a change of name at all. See minor name change in Uttarakhand.
Whose Limit Does a Child's Name Update Use?
The child's own. UIDAI's guidance, as reported, lets a name be updated twice in a lifetime, and the count runs with the Aadhaar number, which the child keeps as an adult.
| When | What happens | Updates left |
|---|---|---|
| Age 3 | A spelling is corrected | One |
| Age 9 | The parents change the spelling for numerology | None |
| Age 26 | She marries and wants her husband's surname | None. Only the exception process |
That is why a child's name deserves more care than an adult's. Decide the full name, with the surname and the spelling, before the first enrolment where you can. And do not spend an update on a spelling you may want to change again.
How Do You Get a Child's Name Corrected in Aadhaar?
Step 1: Compare the Aadhaar with the birth certificate
Note the difference, in the English line and in the Hindi line.
Step 2: Put the birth certificate right first, if it is the wrong one
At the Registrar's office for the place of birth.
Step 3: Work out which case you have
A "Baby of" entry, a typing mistake, a small correction or a different name.
Step 4: Ask the centre what it needs for that case
Which paper, which affidavit format, and the fee.
Step 5: Go with the child and the papers
The child's Aadhaar, the birth certificate and the parent's own Aadhaar. Carry the originals.
Step 6: Read the operator's screen
Check the child's name letter by letter, in both scripts, before the request is submitted.
Step 7: Complete the verification and pay the fee
The fee for a demographic update is reported as Rs 75. The centre displays the current fee.
Step 8: Keep the slip, then download and check the updated Aadhaar
The slip carries an update request number for tracking.
A name is updated in person at a centre. It is not done through the online facility.
Why Are the Updates at Age 5 and 15 the Time to Check?
Every child with a Baal Aadhaar has to visit a centre twice in any case, for the mandatory biometric update.
| Update | When | What is taken | Fee, as announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | On turning 5 | Fingerprints, iris and a fresh photograph | Free between the ages of 5 and 7 |
| Second | On turning 15 | Fingerprints, iris and a fresh photograph | Free between the ages of 15 and 17 |
- Outside those windows, a fee of Rs 125 for each update was announced. A one-year waiver for other ages ran from 1 October 2025. Check the fee in force now.
- Use each visit to read the child's name, date of birth and parent's details on the record.
- Ask the centre if a name correction can be made in the same visit, and what fee then applies.
- Do not skip these updates. UIDAI has said an Aadhaar may be deactivated where the first update is not done in time. Check the current rule.
The visit at 15 comes just as the school is sending the child's name to the board. It is the last easy moment to make Aadhaar, the birth certificate and the school record say the same thing. See child name change in school records.
What About a Parent's Name on the Child's Aadhaar?
A child's Aadhaar often shows a parent's name in the "care of" line. Parents sometimes come to correct that and are told it is a name change. It is not.
- The care of line is part of the address. It is changed as an address update, not as a name update.
- It does not use up either of the child's two name updates.
- Where the parent's own name has changed, for example after marriage, update the parent's Aadhaar first.
- Carry the paper the centre asks for to show the relationship, usually the birth certificate.
Say clearly at the counter that it is the care of line you want corrected. A request entered under the wrong head can spend a name update for nothing.
What Follows in the School Record and the Passport?
School
- Give the school the corrected Aadhaar and the birth certificate
- Ask in writing for the register to be brought in line
- Do it before the school registers the child with the board
- Check the father's and the mother's names at the same time
Passport
- A child's passport follows the birth certificate
- Decide which word is the given name and which the surname
- Apply after the birth certificate and Aadhaar agree
- Passport Seva has its own list of papers for a minor
The order for a child is the birth certificate, then Aadhaar, then the school, then the passport. A record made before the one above it is settled has to be corrected later.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work for a Child?
Use this only for a different name, where the centre has confirmed the change is major. The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a major change
Ask the Aadhaar centre, and ask the Registrar what it can do in the birth record.
Step 2: Settle who signs
Both parents, or one parent with a court order, or the legal guardian.
Step 3: Fix the child's exact new name
The spelling, spacing and order the child will carry for life.
Step 4: Make the parents' affidavit
State the child's old name, new name and date of birth. Sign before a notary.
Step 5: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper, with the parent's name and address. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 6: Type the minor's form and prepare the CD
Two typed copies of the specimen for a minor, signed by the parent with two witnesses, the same text on a CD in MS Word, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the minor's charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,700. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the centre
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Download the published Gazette from egazette.gov.in and carry a printed copy with the child's papers.
For the parents' affidavit, see name change affidavit for a minor.
Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used for a Child?
The reports speak of a Gazette notification and do not say which Gazette. A child's papers will be used for decades, so the Gazette of India is the safer choice.
Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre which Gazette it accepts
And look at UIDAI's current list of supporting documents.
Step 2: Think about the child's future
School boards, college, a passport and work, in or out of the state.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private notice for a minor is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask what it needs, and submit as directed
Both parents' signatures, the format, the language and the fee. Keep photocopies.
Step 5: Download the notice and take it to the centre
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Parents Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Enrolling the child before the name is on the birth certificate | Finish the birth certificate first |
| Paying for a Gazette to replace "Baby of" or fix a letter | That is done at the centre, on the birth certificate |
| Correcting Aadhaar while the birth certificate is still wrong | Correct the birth certificate first |
| Not reading the operator's screen | Check both lines before the request is submitted |
| Spending a name update on a spelling you may change again | The limit of two is the child's for life |
| Asking for a name update when it is the care of line that is wrong | That is an address update |
| Missing the biometric update at 5 or at 15 | Do each within its free window |
| Using a general affidavit where UIDAI has its own format | Ask the centre for the prescribed one |
| Leaving the school record as it was | Give the school the corrected Aadhaar |
A typical case we handle: a couple in Rudrapur had enrolled their daughter for Aadhaar in the hospital, and the record said "Baby of" with the mother's name. Two years later a shop told them a name change needed a Gazette. Her birth certificate already carried her name. They took it to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the mother's Aadhaar, and the child's name was entered. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a "Baby of" entry, a typing mistake, a small spelling correction or a surname, you need the Aadhaar centre and the birth certificate. We are useful only where the parents want a different name for the child and a Gazette is asked for. Send us the two papers and we will tell you, free, which case you have.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The Aadhaar update is made in person, with the child, at a centre near you.
People Also Ask About a Child's Aadhaar Name
How can I correct my child's name in Aadhaar?
At an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with the child, the birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar.
Is a gazette required to change a child's name in Aadhaar?
Only for a different name. A typing mistake or a "Baby of" entry needs none.
How do I change "Baby of" to my child's name in Aadhaar?
Get the name on the birth certificate, then take it to an Aadhaar centre.
How many times can a child's name be updated in Aadhaar?
Twice in a lifetime, and updates made in childhood count.
At what age is the biometric update for a child's Aadhaar?
On turning 5, and again on turning 15.
Can I correct my child's Aadhaar name online?
No. A name is updated in person at a centre.
Is the child biometric update free now?
Updates between 5 and 7, and between 15 and 17, remain free. For ages 7 to 15, UIDAI waived the charge from 1 October 2025 for one year, which made the update free for all children from 5 to 17 until 30 September 2026. Ask the centre if that waiver has been extended.
Can my child's biometric update be done at school?
Yes. UIDAI has been holding camps in schools, using its link with the UDISE+ school system to find children whose update is due. Updates can also be done at any Aadhaar enrolment centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
How many children have completed the school biometric update?
More than two crore schoolchildren, across over 1.56 lakh schools, as announced in August 2026.
What happens if my child's biometric update is not done?
The Ministry has said a missing update may cause difficulty with Aadhaar authentication for scheme benefits and for registering in competitive and university examinations.
Why are a young child's fingerprints not taken for Aadhaar?
Below five, only demographic details and a photograph are recorded, because fingerprints and iris patterns are still developing. They are added at the update at 5.
Can I correct my child's name at the same school camp?
Ask the camp operator. The camps are run for the biometric update. A name correction needs the birth certificate and, for a typing mistake, the prescribed affidavit, so carry them if you plan to ask.

Baal Aadhaar Child Name Correction: The Short Version
A child's Aadhaar name comes from the birth certificate, so put the birth certificate right first. A "Baby of" entry, a typing mistake or a small spelling correction is made at an Aadhaar centre, in person, with the birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar. No Gazette is needed. Only a different name is a major change that needs one, signed for by both parents.
Each name update counts against the child's own two, for life. Use the biometric updates at 5 and 15 to check the record. To find out which case is yours, send the two papers on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
Birth Certificate First, Then the Child's Aadhaar
Send both papers on WhatsApp. We tell you, free, if the centre can correct it without a Gazette.
