Name Change for Numerology in Uttarakhand
Adding a letter or changing a spelling by choice: why it is a change of name and not a correction, what it does to your records, and how to do it once.
A name change for numerology, even of a single letter, is a change of name and not a correction. To carry the new spelling into your records, you make an affidavit, publish a newspaper notice and file a notice in the Gazette. The Gazette of India charge is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor.

A name change for numerology usually looks small on paper: one letter added, one dropped, a vowel doubled. Offices do not treat it as small. This page explains name change for numerology for people in Uttarakhand: what it involves, what it costs you in records and time, and how to make sure you do it only once.
We take no view on numerology or astrology. An adult may choose a spelling for any reason. Our part is the paperwork. For the Gazette steps in full, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.
Why Is One Letter a Change of Name?
A correction puts right a mistake that a record made. A change gives you a name you did not have before. A spelling chosen for numerology is the second kind, however little it differs from the old one.
| Point | Spelling correction | Numerology spelling |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | One record misspelt your true name | Your records are right. You have chosen a new spelling |
| Example | Birth certificate says Sonia. One marksheet says Sonai | Every record says Sonia. You want Soniya |
| Who settles it | The office that made the mistake | You, through the Gazette |
| Proof asked for | Your older, correct record | A Gazette notification |
| Records to update | The wrong one only | All of them |
Offices and databases match names letter by letter. To a bank's system, Sonia and Soniya are two different customers. That is why a change of one letter needs the same proof as a change of the whole name.
What Are the Two Ways to Use a New Spelling?
Many people do not know they have a choice here.
Use it informally
- On your visiting card, your shop board, social media and in daily life
- No affidavit, newspaper notice or Gazette
- Every official record stays in your present spelling
- You sign cheques, forms and contracts in the recorded spelling
- You can stop or change it at any time
Change it in law
- An affidavit, a newspaper notice and a Gazette notification
- Then Aadhaar, PAN, the bank, the passport and the rest, one by one
- Your new spelling is on every record
- Older certificates stay in the old spelling, with the Gazette to link them
- It uses one of the two name changes Aadhaar allows in a lifetime
If what you want is to be known by the new spelling, the first way may be all you need, and it costs nothing. If you want it on your passport, your bank account and your property papers, you need the second. What does not work is the middle: the new spelling on some official forms and the old on others.
Which Kinds of Numerology Change Do We See?
| Kind of change | Example of form | Think about |
|---|---|---|
| A letter added | Rahul to Rahull | People will misspell it for the rest of your life |
| A vowel changed or doubled | Sonia to Soniya, Pooja to Puja | The Hindi spelling may stay exactly the same |
| A letter dropped | Deepak to Dipak | Looks like an error in your old papers |
| An initial added | Amit Rawat to Amit K. Rawat | Initials cause mismatches in forms with separate name boxes |
| The surname respelt | Bisht to Bishtt | You will differ from your parents, spouse and children |
| A whole new first name | Priya to Pari | A full change, and the easiest for offices to follow |
The names are only examples of form. Note the second row. A name on Aadhaar appears in English and in Hindi. A new English spelling that sounds the same may leave the Hindi line as it is, and then your record reads one way in one script and another way in the other. Decide both spellings together.
How Do You Think It Through First?
Step 1: Write the new spelling in full
The whole name, as it will appear on a passport: given name in one line, surname in the next.
Step 2: Write it in Hindi as well
Decide if the Hindi spelling changes, and how.
Step 3: List every record you hold
Aadhaar, PAN, bank accounts, passport, licence, voter ID, insurance, property papers, employer records. Each will need an update.
Step 4: Check what is coming up
A board examination, a visa, a job joining, a property purchase or a loan. Do not change your name in the middle of any of these.
Step 5: Ask if informal use would do
If you only want to be known by the new spelling, you may not need a legal change.
Step 6: Wait a few weeks
Use the new spelling informally first. If you still want it after a month, file.
Step 7: Fix it and do not change it again
Write the final spelling down and copy it letter for letter into every paper.
What Does a New Spelling Do to Your Records?
The Gazette is supporting proof. It does not correct any record by itself. You apply to each office, in this order. This is the usual position, and each office keeps its own rules.
| Record | What happens |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar | Updated first, in person, with the Gazette. One of only two name changes allowed |
| PAN | Corrected next. Aadhaar and PAN must match letter for letter |
| Bank accounts, cards, cheque books | Updated once Aadhaar and PAN agree. Cards and cheque books are reissued |
| Passport | Reissued in the new spelling. A visa in the old passport needs attention too |
| Driving licence, voter ID, insurance, investments | Each updated at its own office |
| Property papers | Stay as executed. Keep the Gazette with them, and ask the office concerned about future dealings |
| Degrees and marksheets | Stay in the old spelling. Boards restrict changes after a result is declared |
| Your children's papers | Show your old spelling as the parent's name until each is updated |
For most adults this is a long list of separate updates, spread over some months. During that time two of your papers will always disagree, and you will carry the Gazette to explain it. This is the true price of one letter, and it is far more than the Gazette charge.
Is There a Limit on How Often You Can Change?
The Gazette office sets no limit that we know of on how many times a person may publish a change of name. Aadhaar does. A name can be changed in Aadhaar only twice in a lifetime, and since almost every other record now checks against Aadhaar, that is the limit that counts.
- One change for numerology leaves you one more for the rest of your life.
- A woman who changes a spelling now and a surname at marriage later has used both.
- Changing to a new spelling and then back again uses both, and leaves you where you started.
- UIDAI describes a request for exception processing through its regional office once the limit is reached. Do not plan on it.
Each Gazette notice is also permanent. A second notice does not erase the first. A person who changes three times has three public notices, and every office that looks will see all three.
How Does the Gazette Notice Read?
The notice follows the Department of Publication's change of name specimen. This is an illustration, with a made-up name and address.
I hitherto known as SONIA RAWAT, daughter of Shri MAHESH RAWAT, residing at 9, Ballupur Road, Dehradun, Uttarakhand 248001, have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as SONIYA RAWAT.
- The notice gives no reason. Numerology is not mentioned, and nothing about why you changed is printed.
- The affidavit usually carries one plain line of reason. "For personal reasons" is enough.
- The form is signed in the old spelling, with two witnesses.
- Your father's or husband's name is printed as his own papers show it. Your notice does not change his spelling.
- Where the old and new names differ by one letter, check the typed form and the CD with great care. A typist will correct the "mistake" without telling you.
That last point causes real trouble. Read the old spelling and the new spelling aloud, letter by letter, on every page before you sign.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India, which is accepted across the country.
Step 1: Fix the final spelling
In English and in Hindi. Write it down.
Step 2: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Check the proof letter by letter, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 4: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and an undertaking showing the old and the new name.
Step 5: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 6: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 7: Send the file yourself
In person or by post, with a request letter, to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Step 8: Download the Gazette and read it
Check Part IV on egazette.gov.in each week. When your notice appears, read both spellings before you take it to any office.
If the Gazette is printed with a wrong letter, see gazette corrigendum at once, before you use it.
Can You Use the Uttarakhand Gazette?
The state Gazette is printed by the Government Press at Roorkee, which sets its own practice. It can serve where every record you own stays inside the state.
Step 1: Ask where the new spelling will be used
For a passport, a central job or a move out of the state, choose the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 3: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee
Ask in which language the notice is printed, since your new spelling may matter in both.
Step 4: Publish the notice and submit the file
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

What About a New Spelling for a Child?
Parents often ask for this soon after a birth, or before a board examination. The two are very different.
- Before the name is registered. If the birth record has no name yet, simply give the spelling you want when you add the name. Nothing is being changed.
- After the name is registered. A new spelling is a change of name for a minor. Both parents sign, and the Gazette charge for a minor is commonly Rs 1,700.
- Before board registration. The school can act on the Gazette and send the new spelling to the board.
- After a board result. Boards restrict a change of name after the result. Ask the school before you assume it can be done.
The limit of two Aadhaar name changes belongs to the child, not to the parents. A change made for a child at 8 leaves one for the rest of the child's life. See minor name change in Uttarakhand.
What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
| Item | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Gazette charge, adult | Rs 1,100 | Paid on BharatKosh. Revised from time to time |
| Gazette charge, minor | Rs 1,700 | For a child under 18 |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp paper and notary |
| Newspaper notice | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 for each paper | Depends on the paper and the edition |
| Each record update | That office's own fee | Aadhaar, PAN, passport and the rest |
| Our assistance | Quoted per case | Shown as a separate line |
If you do everything yourself, the Gazette side is usually Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 and commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. The record updates take some months more. The charge is the same for one letter as for a whole new name.
Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Calling it a spelling correction | It is a change of name. File it as one |
| Changing the spelling in Aadhaar alone | Change it through the Gazette, then update every record |
| Using the new spelling on some forms before any Gazette | Use the recorded spelling on official papers until it is updated |
| Filing before the spelling is final | Wait until you are sure |
| Changing twice within a few years | Aadhaar allows two changes in a lifetime |
| Changing in the middle of a visa, an exam or a loan | Finish that first |
| Not checking the typed papers letter by letter | A one-letter difference is easily "corrected" by a typist |
| Forgetting the Hindi spelling | Decide both scripts together |
| Expecting degrees to be reissued | They stay as issued |
A typical case we handle: a shopkeeper in Haldwani added a letter to his first name on advice, and had it changed in his Aadhaar first. His PAN and bank still had the old spelling, and his account failed its verification. He then filed a Gazette notice for the new spelling and brought PAN and the bank in line. It took him some months to sort out what a single visit had started. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
If informal use is enough for you, there is nothing to file. And a plain adult change of spelling can be filed by you with the Department's guideline and this site. We are useful for checking a one-letter change on every page before it is printed, and for planning the record updates. Our charge is quoted per case.

Can I change my name spelling in Aadhaar for numerology?
With a Gazette notification. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime.
Can I use a numerology spelling without changing it legally?

How many times can I change my name?
Aadhaar allows two name changes in a lifetime, and that is the limit that counts in practice.
What if I have already used both Aadhaar name changes?
UIDAI's own FAQ says a further update needs a Gazette notification for the change of name. You enrol with it at a centre, and once the request is rejected for the limit, you call 1947 or write to UIDAI asking for exception processing through the regional office, quoting the enrolment number.
Do I have to visit the UIDAI regional office for a third change?
Usually not. UIDAI's office memorandum says residents need not visit regional offices unless specifically asked. The request goes to the regional office by email or post.
Does correcting the Hindi line on Aadhaar use up a name change?
No. UIDAI's procedure says a name update made because of an update of the regional language is not counted as one of the name update chances.
Are there limits on other Aadhaar changes too?
Yes. UIDAI allows a name update twice in a lifetime, and a gender update and a date of birth update once each. Address and mobile number have no such limit.
What does an Aadhaar name update cost?
A demographic update, which covers the name, costs Rs 75 when done on its own, and is free when done along with a biometric update, as UIDAI's fee list shows.
Can I change my passport to a numerology spelling?
Only by the change of name route. An Indian mission's guidance says adding or dropping a word or spelling needs two Government ID documents in the changed name and a Gazette notification or newspaper advertisement.
