Visa Application Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For students, workers and families going abroad whose passport, visa form, supporting papers and ticket do not carry one name: what a consulate compares, what a single-name passport leads to, how a married name is shown, and what to settle before the visa is applied for.
A visa application name mismatch is settled before the form is filled. A visa is issued in the passport's name, so the passport is put right first, by a re-issue where needed. Supporting papers are then brought to it, or linked by a marriage certificate. Fill the form exactly as the passport reads, and declare every earlier name.

A young person from the hills going abroad to study or work carries a file of papers made over twenty years, by a school, a bank, a university and a passport office. A consulate reads them all in ten minutes. A visa application name mismatch is whatever it finds that does not agree. This page explains visa application name mismatch for travellers from Uttarakhand.
We do not fill visa forms or deal with consulates. We prepare the Gazette notification, where a name has in fact been changed. Every country sets its own visa rules, and we read none of them at source for this page. The two rules we describe are from guides and news reports. For the passport itself, read name change in passport.
What Is a Visa Tied To?
- The passport. A visa is a permission given to the holder of one particular passport, by its number and its name.
- The reading line. The two lines of capital letters at the foot of the passport's first page. Machines at consulates and airports read the name from there.
- The two boxes. Surname and given name, as the passport office printed them.
- The form. The applicant copies the name from the passport, and declares other names used.
- The file. Papers that show who the applicant is, what they earn or own, and why they will return.
The consulate does not decide what your name is. It takes the passport's word for that. What it judges is whether the rest of the file is about the same person.
Which Two Rules Are Worth Knowing?
These are two countries' practices, as guides and news reports describe them. They are given as examples, not as the whole law. Check the consulate's own site.
| Country | What is reported |
|---|---|
| United States | Where a passport has no surname, or no given name, the whole name is placed in the surname field of the visa and the first name is printed as FNU, for first name unknown |
| United Arab Emirates | From 21 November 2022, visitors are to have both a primary and a secondary name in the passport. As amended, a single-name passport is accepted where the visa is issued with more than one name and the father's or family name appears on the second page |
| The same, for residents | The rule was reported as applying to visit and tourist visas, and not to holders of a residence visa whose name is filled in both columns |
Both rules come from the same fact. Passports from this part of the world were long issued with the whole name in one box. Systems abroad expect two.
What Does a Consulate Compare?
| Paper | Why it is in the file | Read against |
|---|---|---|
| The passport | It is the identity | Everything else is read against it |
| Bank statements and tax papers | To show means | The applicant's or the sponsor's name on the passport |
| Degrees and mark sheets | For study and skilled work | The passport, and the admission or job offer |
| The marriage certificate | For a spouse's visa, or to explain a surname | Both spouses' passports |
| A child's birth certificate | To show the parents | The parents' passports, and the child's |
| A police clearance certificate | For work and migration | The passport, and earlier names |
| The offer, admission or invitation letter | The reason for travel | The passport |
The last row is written by someone abroad, from an email. Send that person a scan of your passport and ask for the name to be copied from it. A university that admits "Deepak Rawat" and a passport that reads "Deepak Singh Rawat" start the file with a question.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The passport is incomplete or wrong
- No surname, the name in the wrong box, a spelling slip
- Or a name since changed
- Cured by a re-issue of the passport, before the visa
A supporting paper differs
- A bank account, a degree or a certificate in another form
- The passport is right
- Cured by correcting the paper, or by a paper that links the two
The form, the visa or the ticket was filled wrongly
- A name typed differently from the passport by the applicant, an agent or the consulate
- Nothing is wrong with any record
- Cured by correcting the form, the visa or the booking before travel
The first is the slow one, and the only one that can involve a Gazette. Find it months before the intake or the joining date, not in the week of the appointment.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The passport has a single name and no surname | A re-issue with a surname, where the country or your plans call for it | Depends on the passport rules |
| The passport has the name in the wrong boxes | A re-issue | No |
| The bank statement has a different spelling | The bank corrects the account | No |
| A degree is in a maiden name | The marriage certificate, attached | No |
| A child's birth certificate names a parent differently from the passport | The Registrar corrects the certificate | No |
| The offer or admission letter has a short form | Ask the sender to reissue it from the passport | No |
| The visa was printed with a slip | Back to the consulate before travel | No |
| The applicant has changed a name by choice | Gazette or notices, then the passport, then the visa | Yes |
A Gazette appears plainly in one row of eight. In the first row it depends on what the passport office asks for when a surname is added.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each consulate has its own form and list.
Step 1: Open the passport's first page and read the two name boxes
What is printed under Surname, and what under Given Name. One of them may be empty.
Step 2: Read the last page as well
The father's, mother's and spouse's names, as the passport gives them.
Step 3: Lay your supporting papers beside the passport
Bank statements, the degree, the marriage certificate, the employer's letter, the sponsor's papers.
Step 4: Decide which is easier to change: the paper, or the passport
A bank account is corrected in a week. A passport is re-issued.
Step 5: Correct the supporting paper where you can
At its own office, to read as the passport does.
Step 6: Have the passport re-issued where it is the one that is wrong or incomplete
A missing surname, a wrong spelling, a name since changed. Do this before the visa, not after.
Step 7: Fill the visa form exactly as the passport reads
Box for box. Declare any earlier name where the form asks for other names used.
Step 8: Book the ticket in the same name
After the visa is granted, letter for letter as the passport's reading line.
What About a Passport With a Single Name?
- Many older people in the state carry one name and a title: "Bachi Devi", "Dhan Singh". The passport was made that way, with the surname box empty.
- They apply for a visa late in life, to visit a son or a daughter abroad.
- For the United States, guides say the visa is then printed with that name as the surname and "FNU" as the first name. It is valid. It also follows the person onto every later paper there.
- For the UAE, news reports say a visitor needs two names, or the father's or family name on the passport's second page with a visa issued in more than one name.
- An airline may refuse to board a passenger it thinks will be turned back. The check is made at the counter, at the last moment.
- Adding a surname is a re-issue of the passport. For someone who will travel more than once, it is worth doing before the first visa.
Read adding a surname to a single name, Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname and name change in passport.
Why Do the Two Name Boxes Matter?
- A passport prints the name in two boxes. Forms abroad ask for a family name and a given name, and expect the same split.
- "Rajesh Kumar Verma" may be printed as surname Verma and given name Rajesh Kumar, or with all three words in the given name box.
- Both read the same aloud. A machine reads them as two different people.
- Copy the split from the passport onto the visa form, the university's form, the employer's form and the ticket.
- Do not improve on it. If the passport has "Kumar" as the surname, that is your surname abroad until the passport is re-issued.
- A passport renewed with a different split from the old one is a new source of mismatch with every old visa and record.
Read flight ticket name mismatch for how the same boxes are read at check-in.
What About Supporting Papers?
- A consulate does not expect every paper of a lifetime to match letter for letter. It expects to see why they differ.
- A paper you can correct quickly should be corrected: a bank account, a tax record, an employer's letter.
- A paper that cannot be changed now, such as an old degree, is explained by a linking paper.
- The ordinary links are a marriage certificate, a Gazette notification, and a corrected or re-issued certificate from the board or university.
- An affidavit that two names are one person is sometimes accepted as support. It is weak alone.
- A sponsor's papers are read the same way. A father who sponsors a student has to be the father named in the student's passport.
Read name change in bank records, name mismatch in police verification and character certificate and name change in birth certificate.
What About a Married Name?
- A wife joining a husband abroad is the commonest spouse visa from the state.
- Her passport may still be in her maiden name, with or without his name as spouse on the last page.
- That is not a fault. A woman need not change her name on marriage, and a visa can be issued in her maiden name.
- What the consulate needs is the marriage, shown by a registered marriage certificate naming both as their passports do.
- Where she has taken his surname on some papers and not on the passport, choose one before applying, and bring the passport to it or the papers back.
- A marriage certificate with a spelling slip in either name is the paper to correct first.
Read name correction in marriage registration certificate, name change after marriage and is a name change compulsory after marriage.
What Do You Write Under "Other Names Used"?
- Most visa forms ask if the applicant has ever used another name.
- The honest answer for many people is yes: a maiden name, a name before a Gazette, a different spelling on an earlier passport, a name with or without a surname.
- Write each one. The question exists so that the consulate can connect your old papers and old travel to you.
- An earlier name left out, and found later, can be treated as a false statement. That is far worse than any mismatch.
- A declared earlier name turns a mismatch into an explained history.
- Keep the paper that proves each change with the file: the marriage certificate, the Gazette, the old passport.
Read alias name in a Gazette notification and overseas job and emigration name mismatch.
What If the Name Changes After the Visa?
- A visa sits in a passport. A change of name means a new passport, with a new number.
- The old passport is returned cancelled, with its visas still inside.
- Some countries let a traveller use a valid visa in the old passport, carried with the new one. Others want the visa moved, or a fresh application.
- Ask the consulate in writing before booking. Do not rely on what a friend was allowed.
- A resident abroad has more to update: the residence permit, the employer's record, the bank and tax records there.
- The simplest course is to finish any change of name before the first visa, and leave it alone afterwards.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this where the name is changed by choice, and the passport is to be re-issued in the new name. It does nothing for a visa form, a ticket or a supporting paper with a spelling slip.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname
The passport rules treat those differently.
Step 2: Read what the passport rules ask for in your case
A change of name by choice is shown by newspaper notices or a Gazette, as our passport page sets out.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and how it splits into the two boxes
Which words are the surname, and which the given name.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then the passport, then the visa
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Update Aadhaar, have the passport re-issued, and only then apply for the visa.

Which Gazette Should You Use?
The readers here are the passport office and then a foreign consulate. The Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Remember who reads the paper
The passport office, and after it a foreign consulate.
Step 2: Prefer the Gazette of India
It is the central Government's publication, and the one a passport office and a consulate recognise.
Step 3: Ask the passport office before relying on a state notice
Read our page on what it accepts.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Keep a clear copy of the notice with your travel papers
A consulate may ask how the name on an old paper became the name on the passport.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Applicants Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Filling the form from memory, not from the passport | Copy it, box for box |
| Splitting a single name to fill both boxes | Enter it as the passport has it, as the form instructs |
| Hiding an earlier name | Declare every one |
| Applying on a passport you mean to change soon | Change the passport first |
| Letting an agent type the name unseen | Read the form before it is submitted |
| Sending the university a short form of your name | Send a scan of the passport |
| Attaching a paper in another name with no link | Add the marriage certificate or Gazette |
| Booking the ticket before reading the visa | Read the visa the day it comes |
| Paying for a Gazette to explain a bank's spelling | The bank corrects it |
A typical case we handle: a nursing graduate from Almora had an offer from a hospital abroad. Her degree and registration read "Hema Bisht". Her passport, made when she was seventeen, read "Hema" with the surname box empty, and her bank account "Hema Kumari". Her agent told her to buy a Gazette. She had not changed any name. The passport was re-issued with the surname Bisht on her school and degree certificates, the bank corrected the account on the new passport, and she asked the hospital to reissue the offer letter in the passport's name. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a visa form, a ticket, a bank's spelling, a maiden name on a degree and a surname added on existing certificates. The passport office, the bank and a marriage certificate settle those. We are useful where the name itself is changed by choice and the passport rules call for a Gazette notification.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The passport is handled by the passport office and its service centres. The Gazette file, where one is needed, is prepared on WhatsApp.
People Also Ask About Names in a Visa Application
Should the visa name match the passport exactly?
Yes. A visa is issued in the passport's name.
What does FNU mean on a visa?
First name unknown, where the passport has one name.
Can I get a visa without a surname in my passport?
Often yes, but some countries ask for two names.
Is a gazette needed for a visa name mismatch?
No. Only for a change of name on the passport.
What if my degree is in my maiden name?
Attach the marriage certificate.
Can I travel if my visa is in my old name?
Ask the consulate. Rules differ by country.
How do I fill the DS-160 if my passport has only one name?
The form's own help text says to enter all surnames exactly as listed in the passport, and if only one name is listed, to enter it as the surname. Where there is no given name, enter FNU in Given Names.
Is the surname field compulsory on the US visa form?
Yes. Guides and applicants report that the DS-160 will not move on without a surname, which is why a single name goes into the surname box.
What counts as "other names used" on a US visa form?
The form's help text lists a maiden name, a religious name, a professional name, or any other name you are or have been known by. Declare each one.
Does FNU follow me onto later papers in the US?
It can. A guide for immigrants says that once the immigration process has begun, the FNU name is easiest to fix after becoming a permanent resident, by changing the name and then replacing the card, passport and licence.
Can a resident of the UAE travel on a single-name passport?
An airline's statement, as reported, allowed passengers with a single name and a residence permit or employment visa to travel, provided the same name was updated in both the First Name and Surname columns.
Should I add a surname before a US visa interview?
Where you can, yes. Applicants report that once the visa is printed with FNU, the consulate issues it as the passport and form read. Correct the passport or the form before the appointment, not after.

That a United States visa on a passport without a surname or a given name places the name in the surname field with FNU as the first name is from published guides to visas. The UAE rule of 21 November 2022 on two names, and its amendment about the father's or family name on the second page, are from news reports of the airlines' circulars and the Indian consulate's clarification. We read no country's visa rules at source, and rules change. What a consulate compares, the two boxes, supporting papers, other names used and a name changed after a visa are general knowledge of how applications are read. The consulate of the country you are going to is the authority.

Names in a Visa Application: The Short Version
A visa follows the passport, box for box. Read the passport's two name boxes and its last page first. If the passport is incomplete or wrong, have it re-issued before applying. Bring bank and other papers to the passport's name, and link old ones with a marriage certificate or a Gazette. Fill every form exactly as the passport reads, declare every earlier name, and book the ticket the same way.
