Name Correction in a Marriage Registration Certificate in Uttarakhand

Where name errors come from, how to catch them before the certificate is issued, whom to approach afterwards, and what to do if the entry cannot be changed.

Quick answer

A name error in a marriage registration certificate in Uttarakhand is taken up with the Sub-Registrar who registered the marriage under the Uniform Civil Code. Check the name in your Aadhaar first, because online registration is tied to it. The published rules list no separate correction service, so ask the office in writing.

Names on a marriage certificate come from what you submit, tied to Aadhaar; catch errors before issue, and after issue write to the Sub-Registrar who registered it.

A name correction in marriage certificate matters more than most people expect, because Aadhaar, PAN, the bank and the passport office all read that certificate. This page explains name correction in marriage certificate for Uttarakhand: where errors come from, how to catch them before the certificate is issued, whom to approach afterwards, and what to do if the entry cannot be changed.

We say plainly at the start what we could and could not confirm. The registration steps here come from the Uniform Civil Code Rules and the state portal. A step by step procedure for correcting a name after the certificate is issued is not set out there in a form we can quote, so for that part this page tells you whom to ask and what to send.

Why Does a Name Error in a Marriage Certificate Matter?

For a married woman who takes her husband's surname, the registered marriage certificate is the proof that carries her new name into every other record. Offices read it letter by letter.

  • An office that changes your surname compares the maiden name on the certificate with your identity papers.
  • PAN, the bank and the passport office then follow Aadhaar and the same certificate.
  • A wrong letter in the certificate is copied into each of these, and each then has to be corrected again.
  • An error in your husband's name, or in a parent's name, raises the question of who the certificate belongs to.

So a certificate with an error is worse than a delay. It is a base paper that spreads the error. Fix it, or decide not to rely on it, before you start any name update.

If you are keeping your maiden name, the same care applies. The certificate is still your proof of the marriage, and it should carry your name exactly as your identity papers do.

Who Registers a Marriage in Uttarakhand?

Since 27 January 2025, marriages in the state are registered under the Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand and its Rules of 2025. The officer who decides your application is the Sub-Registrar, and who that is depends on where you live.

Sub-Registrar and Registrar for marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code Rules, Uttarakhand
AreaSub-RegistrarRegistrar, who hears appeals
Rural areasVillage Panchayat Development OfficerSub-Divisional Magistrate
Nagar Panchayat or Nagar PalikaExecutive OfficerSub-Divisional Magistrate
Municipal CorporationTax Inspector in charge of the wardMunicipal Commissioner
CantonmentResident Medical Officer of the Cantonment BoardChief Executive Officer of the Cantonment Board

The State Government may designate another officer in any of these places. Above the Registrar is the Registrar General, an officer not below the rank of Secretary.

  • You can apply online on ucc.uk.gov.in or through its mobile app, by yourself or through an agency the state has notified.
  • You can also apply offline, by giving the form and papers to the Sub-Registrar for the place of marriage or for the present or permanent address of either spouse.
  • The portal lists the fee as Rs 250 for the standard service, decided in 15 days, and Rs 2,500 for the Tatkal service, decided in 3 days.

Knowing who your Sub-Registrar is matters for this page. A request about an entry in your certificate goes to that officer first.

Where Does the Name on the Certificate Come From?

From what you submit. The certificate is produced from the application, which the Rules call a memorandum. Nobody retypes your name from a wedding card.

  • Under the Rules as published, online registration begins with signing up by Aadhaar number, verified through an OTP on the mobile linked to Aadhaar.
  • The memorandum then takes each spouse's Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, nationality, religion, phone number and present and permanent address.
  • It also takes the names and details of parents or guardians, of the person who performed the ceremony, and of two witnesses.
  • Proof of age is uploaded from a set list, which includes a birth certificate, PAN card, passport, matriculation certificate, voter card and driving licence.

Two things follow. If your Aadhaar carries a wrong spelling, that spelling is likely to reach the certificate. And if your Aadhaar and your proof of age disagree, the office has two spellings to choose between.

The Rules have been amended since they were first published, and the portal is the authority on what is asked today. Its own list of frequently asked questions includes one on a name that does not exactly match Aadhaar. Read that answer on the portal before you apply.

Which Kinds of Name Error Appear in Marriage Certificates?

Kinds of name error in a marriage certificate and their effect
The errorUsual causeWhat it affects
A wrong letter in the wife's nameThe same error in Aadhaar, or a typing slip in the formEvery name update that relies on the certificate
A wrong letter in the husband's nameAs aboveThe surname the wife is taking, and spouse entries in a passport
The married surname entered as the wife's nameThe form filled in the name she plans to useThe certificate no longer shows her maiden name, so it cannot link old and new
A short form or a missing middle nameDifferent papers carry different formsA mismatch with the proof of age or the passport
A parent's name spelt wronglyTyped from memoryQuestions about identity at verification
The order of names reversedSurname typed firstA mismatch in systems that compare name fields

The third row is the one that surprises people. A bride who types her married surname in the form gets a certificate that proves the marriage but shows no maiden name. For the simple surname change, the certificate needs to show the name she held before, as on her identity papers.

How Do You Avoid a Name Error When You Register?

The cheapest correction is the one made before the fee is paid.

Step 1: Compare your base papers first

Put Aadhaar, your proof of age and your passport side by side, for both spouses. Check that each name reads the same on all of them.

Step 2: Repair a base paper before you apply

If Aadhaar is the odd one out, update Aadhaar first and apply for registration after the new name shows.

Step 3: Enter the names you hold today

The wife enters her maiden name, as on her identity proof. The married name comes later, through the name update.

Step 4: Copy parents' and witnesses' names from their papers

Do not type them from memory.

Step 5: Read the filled form aloud before you submit

Ask your spouse to read it too. One of you will see what the other has stopped noticing.

Step 6: Note the application ID

You will need it to track the application and for any later request.

Step 7: Read the certificate the day it is issued

Check every name, both dates of birth, the date of marriage and the address, while the matter is still fresh at the office.

What Is the Clarification Stage, and Why Does It Help?

After you apply, the Sub-Registrar holds a short inquiry into what you have submitted. The Rules give him a set time to come back to you, and give you a set time to reply.

Time limits at the clarification stage of marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code Rules
StageStandard serviceTatkal service
Sub-Registrar may ask for more informationWithin 5 days of receiving the applicationWithin 24 hours
You must replyWithin 5 days of being askedWithin 24 hours
Decision: certificate or a reasoned rejectionWithin 15 daysWithin 3 days
Appeal against a rejectionTo the Registrar, within 30 days of the rejection

If the office spots that two of your papers disagree on a name, this is when it will ask. Answer fully and on time. Not replying within the limit is itself a ground on which an application can be rejected.

If you notice an error yourself after submitting and before the certificate is issued, tell the Sub-Registrar at once, with your application ID and the proof of the right spelling. It is far easier for the office to deal with a name before it issues a certificate than after.

What Do the Rules Provide After the Certificate Is Issued?

Here is what we found in the Rules and on the portal, and what we did not find.

What is provided

  • A duty to update the record online within 30 days if a spouse's address, phone number, email or religion changes
  • A duty to update it on the birth or death of a child, the death of a spouse, or a divorce or annulment
  • An appeal to the Registrar, and then the Registrar General, against a rejected application
  • A complaint service on the portal, and access to certified extracts of the record

What we did not find

  • A listed service for correcting a name in a certificate that has been issued
  • A fee or a time limit for such a correction
  • A name among the particulars that the Rules ask spouses to keep updated

That does not mean a wrong name must stay. It means the way to get it changed is not published as a ready service, so it has to be asked for. The Sub-Registrar who issued the certificate holds the record and is the right officer to ask.

Be wary of anyone who sells a "marriage certificate correction" as a fixed package. Ask which rule and which portal service they will use. If they cannot say, they are guessing with your money.

How Do You Ask for a Correction After the Certificate Is Issued?

Step 1: Pin down the error and its source

Compare the certificate with what you submitted. Work out if the wrong spelling came from your form, from Aadhaar or from the office.

Step 2: Repair the base paper if it is the source

If Aadhaar or your proof of age carries the same error, correct that first. A request that rests on a wrong base paper goes nowhere.

Step 3: Find your Sub-Registrar

The certificate and the portal show who registered the marriage. Use the table above to see which officer that is in your area.

Step 4: Write a short request

Give the application ID, the registration number, the entry as printed, the entry as it should read, and how the error arose. Ask how the entry can be corrected.

Step 5: Attach proof

A copy of the certificate, and the papers that show the right spelling: Aadhaar, the proof of age and the passport if you hold one.

Step 6: Send it and keep a record

Hand it in and take a dated receiving on your copy, or use the complaint service or the helpdesk shown on the portal. Keep the reference number.

Step 7: Follow the reply, and go up if there is none

Do what the office directs. If you get no answer, write to the Registrar for your area with a copy of your first request.

Until the certificate is right, do not use it for an Aadhaar name update. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime, and an update built on a wrong certificate uses one of them.

What If Your Certificate Was Issued Under the Earlier Law?

Many couples hold a certificate issued before 27 January 2025, under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2010, or under another marriage law. The Code does not ask them to register again.

  • A marriage already registered under any law gets an acknowledgement certificate under the Code, after verification, based on the existing certificate.
  • To apply for the acknowledgement, the existing marriage registration certificate is uploaded.
  • So an error in the old certificate is likely to be carried into the acknowledgement.

If your old certificate has a name error, take it up with the office that issued it before you apply for the acknowledgement. Ask that office what it needs to correct its own record. Carry the certificate, both spouses' identity papers and proof of the right spelling.

If you have already been given an acknowledgement with the same error, write to the Sub-Registrar who issued it, in the way set out above, and enclose whatever the first office has corrected.

What If the Real Error Is in Aadhaar or Another Base Paper?

Often the certificate is only repeating a mistake that sits somewhere else. Find the first paper that went wrong and start there.

Where to correct the base paper when a marriage certificate repeats its error
The error began inCorrect it atIs a Gazette usually needed?
Aadhaar, a typing or transliteration errorAn Aadhaar Seva Kendra, with a supporting documentNo
Birth certificateThe Registrar of births who issued itNo. It is not a Gazette matter
Class 10 certificateThe board, through the school, on its own formAsk the board
PassportPassport Seva, as a re-issueCheck its list for your case

Once the base paper is right, your request to the Sub-Registrar has something solid to rest on: the certificate should say what your identity papers now say.

If you cannot tell which of two spellings is the true one, read name correction vs name change before you touch any record.

Can a Gazette Notification Fix a Marriage Certificate?

No. A Gazette notification does not correct the marriage record. Only the office that holds the record can change it. Anyone who offers a Gazette as the cure for a wrong marriage certificate is selling the wrong paper.

A Gazette can do something else. It can make you independent of the certificate.

What a Gazette cannot do

  • Change an entry in the marriage record
  • Reissue the certificate
  • Prove the marriage

What a Gazette can do

  • Publish your change of name by itself, without resting on the marriage certificate
  • Give Aadhaar, PAN and the passport office a proof of the new name that they can verify
  • Link a maiden name and a married name where the certificate fails to

So if your certificate cannot be corrected, or cannot be corrected in time, and what you need is your surname changed in your records, the Gazette change of name route is a way round. The Department of Publication's list of papers for it does not include a marriage certificate.

You would still keep the marriage certificate as proof of the marriage, and tell each office that the certificate has an error if they compare the two.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work If the Certificate Cannot Be Changed?

The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. This follows the Department of Publication's guideline for a change of name.

Step 1: Ask the office in writing first

Keep the Sub-Registrar's reply, or proof that you asked. It explains later why you took this route.

Step 2: Publish the newspaper notice

Print your change of name in a daily local leading newspaper, with your husband's name and your address. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 3: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Use the change of name specimen in two copies. Sign in your old name, with two witnesses.

Step 4: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 5: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 6: Send the file yourself

In person or by post, with a request letter, to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Step 7: Download the Gazette

Check Part IV on egazette.gov.in each week and download the PDF.

The full route is on our gazette name change in Uttarakhand page.

Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used in Its Place?

Where every record you own stays inside the state, it may serve. The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own practice.

Step 1: Check where the new name will be used

For a passport, a central job or a move out of the state, use the Gazette of India.

Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 3: Ask for the papers and the fee

Note what the press wants and how the fee is paid.

Step 4: Publish the notice and submit the file

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Make a Certificate Error Worse?

Common mistakes with a name error in a marriage certificate
MistakeWhat to do
Using the wrong certificate for an Aadhaar updateFix the certificate, or use another route, first
Asking the office to change the certificate while Aadhaar still has the same errorCorrect the base paper first
Typing the married surname as the wife's name at registrationEnter the name on her identity proof
Ignoring a request for clarification from the Sub-RegistrarReply within the time limit
Editing the certificate file or overwriting a printoutNever. An altered certificate is a serious matter
Registering the marriage a second time to get a clean certificateDo not. A registered marriage is not registered again
Paying for a Gazette to "correct" the certificateA Gazette does not change the marriage record
Making an oral request and keeping no recordAsk in writing and keep the reference

A typical case we handle: a couple in Haldwani filled the registration form late at night and left out the husband's middle name, which is on his passport. They read the form again the next morning, before paying the fee, and corrected it. The certificate matched his passport, and his wife's later passport application went through without a question. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

Registering a marriage and asking the Sub-Registrar about an entry are things you do yourself, on the state portal or at the office. We do not register marriages and we cannot change a marriage record. We are useful only if the certificate cannot be put right and you need a Gazette change of name as the way round. Our charge for that is quoted per case.

Name Correction in a Marriage Certificate: Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an online service for correcting a marriage certificate?+
The state portal, ucc.uk.gov.in, lists registration, appeal, complaint and access to data services. It lists no separate service for correcting a name after the certificate is issued, so the request has to be raised with the office.
Who is the Sub-Registrar for my area?+

Yes, and that is the best time. Tell the Sub-Registrar at once with your application ID and proof of the right spelling, or correct it when the office asks you for clarification.

Within 15 days on the standard service and within 3 days on the Tatkal service. The officer may ask for more information within 5 days, or within 24 hours on Tatkal.

The portal lists Rs 250 for the standard service and Rs 2,500 for the Tatkal service. A late fee applies if the application is made after the time limit.
Which name should the bride enter in the registration form?+
The name on her identity proof on that day, which for most brides is the maiden name. The married name is taken up later through the name update.
Why does my Aadhaar matter for the marriage certificate?+
Under the Rules as published, online registration starts by signing up with an Aadhaar number, and the form takes each spouse's Aadhaar number and name. A wrong spelling in Aadhaar is likely to reach the certificate.

The Rules give an appeal to the Registrar, within 30 days, against an order rejecting an application for registration. For a correction request with no reply, write to the Registrar for your area or use the complaint service on the portal.
Do I have to update the marriage record if my address changes?+
Yes. The Rules ask spouses to update a change of address, phone number, email or religion online within 30 days of the change.
My certificate was issued before 2025 and has an error. What do I do?+
Take it up with the office that issued it, before you apply for the acknowledgement under the Code. The acknowledgement is based on the existing certificate, so the error is likely to carry over.
Can I get a fresh registration with the right name?+
No. A marriage already registered under any law is not registered again. It is acknowledged under the Code.
Can I use a certificate with a wrong name for my Aadhaar update?+
You should not. The error would pass into Aadhaar, and Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime.
Will a Gazette notification correct my marriage certificate?+
No. Only the office that holds the marriage record can change it. A Gazette can publish your change of name by itself, without relying on the certificate.
Is an affidavit enough to cover the error?+
Ask the office you are dealing with. Some accept a sworn statement for a small difference, and others want the certificate itself to be right.
Can you get my marriage certificate corrected?+
No. We do not register marriages and cannot change a marriage record. We can tell you, free, where the error began and whom to write to, and prepare a Gazette file if that route is needed.
