Name Spelling Correction in Uttarakhand
A wrong letter in one of your papers: which office corrects it, what to carry, in what order, and the few cases that need a Gazette public notice.
A name spelling correction in Uttarakhand is usually made by the office that issued the paper, on its own form, with a document that shows the right spelling. No affidavit, newspaper notice or Gazette is needed for most of them. A Gazette public notice comes in only where that office asks for one in writing.

Most people who ask for a "name change" in fact need a name spelling correction in Uttarakhand: their name is right, and one paper has it wrong. That is cheaper and quicker to settle, and it rarely needs us. This page shows where a name spelling correction in Uttarakhand is made for each kind of record, and in what order.
If you want a spelling that is on none of your papers, that is a change of name, not a correction. Read name correction vs name change first.
What Is a Name Spelling Correction?
It is the putting right of a mistake that a record made. Your true name has not changed. A clerk, an operator or a school wrote it wrongly, and you want that one record brought in line with the rest.
| The difference | Example | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| A typing mistake in one record | Rajesh typed as Rajseh | A correction |
| A wrong letter by sound | Bisht written as Bist | A correction, if your older papers say Bisht |
| English and Hindi lines that do not match | The English name is right and the Hindi line reads differently | A transliteration error. A correction |
| A short form in place of the full word | Kr. for Kumar, or Md for Mohammad | Short form and full form. Usually a correction |
| The same words in a different order | Rawat Suresh for Suresh Rawat | An order difference |
| A spelling you now prefer | Every paper says Sonia and you want Soniya | A change of name. Not a correction |
The test is your oldest and most trusted record. If it carries the spelling you want, the other paper is wrong and you have a correction. If no paper carries the spelling you want, you are asking for something new.
How Do You Find Your Base Record?
Every correction needs a paper to correct against. That paper is your base record. Offices trust some papers more than others.
- The birth certificate, where it carries your name.
- The class 10 certificate, which most offices treat as the firmest proof of name and date of birth for an adult.
- The passport, if you hold one.
- Aadhaar, which many offices now check against, though it is often the paper with the error.
Lay all your papers out, oldest first, and write down the spelling on each. Three questions settle most cases.
- Which spelling do most of my papers carry?
- Which spelling does my class 10 certificate carry?
- Which single paper is the odd one out?
Which Office Corrects Which Paper?
Find the paper that has the error. This is the usual position, and each office keeps its own list and can change it.
| Paper with the error | Who corrects it | How | Gazette usually needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | UIDAI | Name update with a supporting document | No |
| PAN | Income Tax Department, through its service providers | PAN correction application | No |
| Voter ID | Election Commission | Form 8 | No |
| Passport | Passport Seva | Re-issue with proof of the right spelling | Check its list |
| Driving licence | The transport office | Correction through the Parivahan service | No |
| Birth certificate | The Registrar who issued it | Correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 | No |
| Class 10 or 12 certificate | The board, through the school | The board's own form, within its time limit | Ask the board |
| Degree or university record | The university | Its own application, through the college | Ask the university |
| Bank account | The branch | Request form with corrected Aadhaar and PAN | No |
| Service book | The establishment section | Application with proof | Ask what it accepts |
| Land and revenue records | The tehsil | Application to the revenue authority | Ask the tehsil |
| State certificates | The issuing authority | A fresh application on the e-District portal | No |
Look at the last column. For most everyday papers the answer is no. The rows that say "ask" are the ones where a Gazette public notice is sometimes wanted as supporting proof.
How Do You Get a Spelling Corrected?
The same seven steps work at almost every office.
Step 1: Lay out your papers and find the odd one
Write the spelling on each. Mark the record that differs.
Step 2: Choose the base record
The older, trusted paper that shows the right spelling.
Step 3: Check that office's own list
Its website or counter will say which form to use and which supporting papers it accepts.
Step 4: Apply on its form, with proof
Give the entry as it stands and as it should read. Attach a self-attested copy of the base record.
Step 5: Keep the acknowledgement
A slip, a reference number or a dated receiving on your copy.
Step 6: Check the corrected paper
Read it letter by letter when it arrives. A correction can introduce a new mistake.
Step 7: Use it to correct the next record
Each corrected paper becomes proof for the one after it.
If an office says it cannot correct the entry, ask it to say in writing what it needs. That answer tells you if a Gazette public notice is truly wanted, or only one more supporting paper.
How Is a Spelling Corrected in Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID and Passport?
Aadhaar
- A typing or transliteration error is corrected with a supporting document from UIDAI's list
- The update is made at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, or online where UIDAI offers it
- A name can be updated only twice in a lifetime, so check the form before the operator submits it
- Read both the English and the Hindi line on the receipt
PAN
- Use the PAN correction application, not a fresh PAN application
- The PAN number stays the same
- Aadhaar and PAN are matched against each other, so correct Aadhaar first if both are wrong
- One person may hold only one PAN
Voter ID
- Form 8 is used for a correction of entries
- It can be filed online or through the booth level officer
- Attach proof of the right spelling
Passport
- A passport is reissued, not corrected by hand
- Check which words sit in the given name and the surname boxes
- Passport Seva's own list says which papers it wants for your case
- Correct your other identity papers first, so they support the request
None of these four needs a Gazette for a plain spelling mistake that an older record disproves. If anyone quotes you for a Gazette to fix a wrong letter in Aadhaar, ask them which rule requires it.
How Is a Spelling Corrected in School and Board Certificates?
These are the hardest papers to correct, and the ones that matter most, because every later office treats the class 10 certificate as the base.
- While the child is in school. The school corrects its own register from the birth certificate, on a parent's written request.
- After the board has registered the candidate. The request goes to the board through the school, on the board's form.
- After the result. Boards set time limits. The Central Board of Secondary Education's rules have given a short period after the result for a spelling correction, forwarded by the head of the school.
- The Uttarakhand Board and universities. Each has its own form, fee and time limit. Apply through the school or college and ask for the current rule.
Where the time limit has passed, a board may refuse, or may ask for more, including a Gazette public notice that states the wrongly written name and the actual name. Ask the board what it will accept before you spend on anything.
For a child still in school, see child name change in school records.
How Is a Spelling Corrected in a Birth Certificate and State Records?
| Record | Where to go | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate | The Registrar for the place of birth | A correction is noted in the register. It is not a Gazette matter |
| Marriage certificate | The Sub-Registrar who registered the marriage | No separate correction service is listed on the state portal. Ask in writing |
| Caste, residence and income certificates | The e-District portal or the tehsil | Apply afresh in the right spelling, with corrected identity proof |
| Ration card and family register | The food supply office or the local body | Its own correction form |
| Land and revenue records | The tehsil | The revenue authority decides. Ask what proof it wants |
For a marriage certificate, see name correction in a marriage registration certificate. For a baby's birth record, see name change for a newborn.
Property and land papers deserve care. A wrong spelling in a revenue record or a sale deed can hold up a sale or a mutation years later. Raise it with the tehsil, or with a lawyer where a deed is involved, well before you need the paper.
In What Order Should You Correct Your Records?
- The base record, if it is wrong. The birth certificate or the class 10 certificate. Everything else is corrected against it.
- Aadhaar. Most other offices now verify against it.
- PAN. Aadhaar and PAN must agree before the bank will act.
- Bank accounts, insurance and investments.
- Passport.
- Voter ID and driving licence.
- State certificates and land records.
If only one paper is wrong, you correct only that one and you are done. The order matters when two or three are wrong, because a correction asked for against a paper that is itself wrong goes nowhere.
When Does a Spelling Correction Need a Gazette?
The office asks in writing
A board, a university or an employer says it wants a Gazette notification before it corrects its record.
The record cannot be corrected
The time limit has passed, and you need a public paper to link the misspelt certificate to your true name.
A parent's name is wrong in your papers
Your marksheet misspells your father's or mother's name, and the board wants Gazette proof.
Records conflict and none settles it
Two trusted papers disagree, and no office will move first.
Papers for use abroad
A foreign office wants one public proof of the right spelling.
It is really a change
The spelling you want is on none of your papers. That needs a change of name notice.
For a correction, the Gazette notice is a public notice, not a change of name notice. It says that a name was wrongly written in a record and states the actual name. See public notice for wrongly written name.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work for a Correction?
Use this only where an office has asked for it. The notice is a public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Get the office's requirement in writing
Confirm that it wants a Gazette notification, and which spelling it treats as correct.
Step 2: Gather proof of both spellings
The record with the wrong spelling and the trusted paper with the right one. Get copies attested.
Step 3: Sign the undertaking
It shows the correct and the wrong name, your father's or husband's name and your address.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper, showing the details of the case. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the public notice form
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed by you and two witnesses. Type the wrong spelling exactly as the record shows it.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and the attested connected document.
Step 7: Pay the public notice charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,400. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the office
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. When it is published, apply to the office that holds the wrong record, with the Gazette as support.
Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used for a Correction?
The Uttarakhand Gazette portal lists Public Notice among its categories. What the Government Press at Roorkee takes from a private person is for the press to say.
Step 1: Ask the office which Gazette it accepts
A board or office outside the state, or a central office, may want the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private public notice for a wrongly written name is being accepted.
Step 3: Ask for the format, the papers and the fee
Note the wording it wants and how the fee is paid.
Step 4: Submit as directed and keep copies
Keep a photocopy of every page.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
What Does a Spelling Correction Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
| Item | Correction at the issuing office | With a Gazette public notice |
|---|---|---|
| Office's own fee | As that office sets. Often small or nil | The same, afterwards |
| Affidavit | Only if the office asks for one | Often asked for by the office |
| Newspaper notice | None | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 |
| Gazette charge | None | Commonly Rs 1,400 for a public notice |
| Time | As that office takes | Several weeks for the Gazette, then the office's time |
The first column is the one most readers need. Our own charge applies only where we prepare a Gazette file, and it is quoted per case and shown as a separate line.
Which Mistakes Do People Make With a Spelling Correction?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Paying for a "name change" when one record has a typing error | Ask the issuing office to correct it |
| Filing a change of name notice for a correction | If a Gazette is needed, it is a public notice |
| Correcting the right paper to match the wrong one | Find the base record first |
| Correcting the bank before Aadhaar and PAN | Keep the order |
| Using up an Aadhaar name update on a careless form | Read the form before it is submitted |
| Applying for a new PAN in the right spelling | Correct the existing PAN |
| Missing a board's time limit after the result | Apply through the school at once |
| Ignoring the Hindi line | Check both scripts |
| An oral request and no record | Apply in writing and keep the acknowledgement |
A typical case we handle: a clerk in Pithoragarh had "Bist" on his Aadhaar and "Bisht" on his class 10 certificate, PAN and service book. He had been quoted for an affidavit, two newspapers and a Gazette. He took his class 10 certificate to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra, had the one record corrected, and paid nobody for anything else. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
