Father's Name Change and Correction in Uttarakhand
When your father's name is wrong or different in your papers: the three kinds of case, which office corrects each record, and when a Gazette public notice is needed.
A father's name correction in your papers is usually made by the office that issued the paper, with your father's identity proof as support. A Gazette is needed only where that office asks, and then it is a public notice. Where a different person is to be shown as father, that is a legal matter for a court.

A father's name correction is asked for almost as often as a correction of one's own name, because the father's name is printed on certificates, the PAN card and the passport. This page explains father's name correction in Uttarakhand for three different cases: a wrong spelling, a father who has changed his own name, and a wrong person named as father.
The record with the error is yours, so you apply, not your father. For the general method, read name spelling correction in Uttarakhand.
Which of the Three Cases Is Yours?
"My father's name is wrong in my papers" can mean three very different things. They take three different routes.
| Case | Example | What it is | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wrong spelling or short form | Your marksheet says Tirlok Singh Bist. Your father is Trilok Singh Bisht | A correction | The issuing office. A public notice if it asks |
| 2. Your father changed his own name | Your papers show his old name. He now has a Gazette in his new name | An update, on the strength of his change | Each office, with his Gazette |
| 3. A different person is named | A step-father, a guardian or an uncle is written as father | A question of who the father is in law | A lawyer and a court, or the adoption papers |
Most readers are in case 1, and for them the answer is simple and cheap. Case 3 is not a name matter at all, and no affidavit or Gazette settles it.
Where Does a Father's Name Appear?
| Record | How it carries the father's name |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate | As a parent, entered at registration |
| School and board certificates | Printed on marksheets and certificates |
| PAN | A parent's name is recorded, usually the father's |
| Passport | In the particulars of the holder |
| Voter ID | As the relation's name |
| Driving licence | As son, daughter or wife of |
| Aadhaar | Only in the care of line of the address, if at all |
| State certificates and land records | As son or daughter of, in Hindi |
Notice Aadhaar. It does not record a father's name as such. A name in the care of line is part of the address, and it is changed as an address update, not a name update.
Find your father's own base record before you start: his Aadhaar, and his class 10 certificate or passport if he has one. Every correction in your papers will be made against the spelling on his.
What If Your Father's Name Is Misspelt or Shortened in Your Record?
This is a correction. Your father's name has not changed. A school, a clerk or an operator wrote it wrongly in a paper that belongs to you.
- A wrong letter. Tirlok for Trilok, Bist for Bisht.
- A short form. H. C. Joshi for Harish Chandra Joshi.
- A word left out. Trilok Bisht for Trilok Singh Bisht.
- A title joined on. Shri or Late typed as part of the name.
- A different English spelling of the same Hindi name. Pandey and Pande.
You are the applicant, because the record is yours. Your father's identity proof is the supporting paper. Where your father has died, a paper of his that shows the right spelling does the same work: his own certificate, service record, pension paper or death certificate.
How Do You Get Your Father's Name Corrected?
Step 1: Decide which case you have
A wrong spelling, a father who changed his name, or a different person named.
Step 2: Get your father's base record
His Aadhaar, and his class 10 certificate or passport where he has one. Note the exact spelling.
Step 3: List your records that carry his name
Write down how each one has it, and mark those that differ.
Step 4: Check each office's own list
Its form, its supporting papers and any time limit.
Step 5: Apply on its form, with proof
Give the entry as it stands and as it should read. Attach a self-attested copy of your father's identity proof.
Step 6: Keep the acknowledgement and check the result
Read the corrected paper letter by letter when it arrives.
Step 7: Use the corrected paper for the next office
Start with the oldest record, usually the class 10 certificate, since later offices check against it.
Where an office asks for a sworn statement, see name spelling correction affidavit, which has a sample for a parent's name.
Which Office Corrects a Father's Name in Each Record?
This is the usual position. Each office keeps its own list and can change it, so check that office before you apply.
| Record | Who corrects it | How | Gazette usually needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate | The Registrar who issued it | Correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 | No |
| School register | The school | A parent's written request with proof | No |
| Class 10 or 12 certificate | The board, through the school | The board's form, within its time limit | Ask the board |
| Degree | The university, through the college | Its own application | Ask the university |
| PAN | Income Tax Department | The PAN correction application | No |
| Passport | Passport Seva | A re-issue with proof of the right name | Check its list |
| Voter ID | Election Commission | Form 8 | No |
| Driving licence | The transport office | A correction through the Parivahan service | No |
| State certificates | The issuing authority | A fresh application on the e-District portal | No |
Boards are the strict ones. The Central Board of Secondary Education's rules have treated a spelling correction in a father's or mother's name like one in the candidate's own, with a short period after the result to apply. The Uttarakhand Board has its own form and time limit. Ask the school for the rule in force.
What If Your Father Has Changed His Own Name?
Then your old papers were right when they were made. They show the name your father had then. Nothing in them is a mistake.
- Your father's change of name is proved by his own Gazette notification.
- Your older certificates and degrees do not have to be changed. Keep a copy of his Gazette with them.
- For papers issued from now on, give his new name, and attach his Gazette where an office asks why it differs from your older papers.
- Where you want an existing record updated, such as a PAN or a passport, apply to that office with his Gazette and his updated identity proof.
- You do not usually need a Gazette notice of your own for this. Your name has not changed.
Boards are again the exception. A board may not alter an old certificate because a parent changed a name later. Ask before you assume, and do not let anyone file a public notice saying the old name was "wrongly written". It was not.
What If a Different Person Is Named as Father?
This is not a spelling matter and not a name change. It is a question of who the father is in law, and it cannot be settled by an affidavit, a newspaper notice or a Gazette.
| The situation | What it needs |
|---|---|
| A step-father's name was written in a school record | The school and the Registrar, with the birth certificate. A lawyer if they refuse |
| An adoptive father is to be shown | The adoption order or registered deed, and the Registrar |
| A guardian, grandfather or uncle was entered as father | Correction against the birth certificate. A lawyer where the birth record itself is wrong |
| The birth certificate names the wrong man | A lawyer. The Registrar corrects an entry only as the law allows |
| A child wants a step-father's name in place of the father's | Adoption, or a court's order. Not a Gazette |
We do not take up these cases as a "father's name change". A Gazette notice that states a different man as someone's father would be describing something no notice can bring about. For adoption, see name change after adoption in Uttarakhand.
What If No Father's Name Is to Be Given?
Some people have been raised by a mother alone, and do not wish to give a father's name, or cannot. The main identity papers allow for this more than people expect. This is the usual position, and each office's current form is the authority.
- Passport. The application takes the name of a parent or a legal guardian. It does not insist on the father.
- PAN. The form provides for a mother's name where the mother is a single parent.
- Aadhaar. It records no father's name. The care of line in the address is optional.
So before you look for a way to "add" or "change" a father's name, check if the form in front of you needs one at all. Ask that office how a single parent's child fills it.
When Is a Gazette Needed for a Father's Name?
A board asks for it
The time limit has passed, or the board wants Gazette proof before it corrects a father's name in a certificate.
An office asks in writing
An employer, a university or the passport office says it wants a Gazette notification.
The certificate cannot be changed
You need a public paper that links the certificate, with its wrong spelling, to your father's true name.
For case 1, the notice is a public notice. The Department of Publication's specimen provides for exactly this: a declaration that the name of your father has been wrongly written in your records, and what his actual name is. This is an illustration, with made-up names.
It is for general information that I, ROHIT BISHT, son of Shri TRILOK SINGH BISHT, residing at Village Kasardevi, Post Office Kasardevi, District Almora, Uttarakhand 263601, declare that name of my father has been wrongly written as TIRLOK SINGH BIST in my educational documents. The actual name of my father is TRILOK SINGH BISHT, which may be amended accordingly.
For case 2, your father's own Gazette is the proof, and you do not publish one. For case 3, no Gazette applies. See public notice for wrongly written name.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work for a Father's Name?
Use this only where an office has asked for it. The notice is a public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Get the office's requirement in writing
Confirm that it wants a Gazette notification, and which spelling of your father's name it treats as correct.
Step 2: Gather proof of both spellings
Your record with the wrong spelling, and your father's identity proof with the right one. Get copies attested.
Step 3: Sign the undertaking
You are the applicant. It shows the correct and the wrong name, and your own details.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper, showing the details of the case. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the public notice form
Two typed copies of the specimen, keeping "my father" and the record concerned. Sign with two witnesses.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and supporting papers
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with your identity proof, a certificate that both copies match, and the attested connected document.
Step 7: Pay the public notice charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,400. Confirm it before you pay. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then take the Gazette to the office
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. When it is published, apply to the board or office that holds the wrong record.
Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used?
The Government Press at Roorkee sets its own practice. Ask the board or office that wants a Gazette which one it accepts.
Step 1: Ask the office which Gazette it accepts
A board based outside the state, a central office or the passport office may want the Gazette of India.
Step 2: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private public notice for a wrongly written name is being accepted.
Step 3: Ask for the format, the papers and the fee
Say that the name in question is your father's, in your record.
Step 4: Submit as directed and keep copies
Keep a photocopy of every page.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
| Item | Correction at the issuing office | With a Gazette public notice |
|---|---|---|
| Office's own fee | As that office sets | The same, afterwards |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to Rs 500, only if the office asks | Often asked for by the office |
| Newspaper notice | None | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 |
| Gazette charge | None | Commonly Rs 1,400 for a public notice |
| Time | As that office takes | Several weeks for the Gazette, then the office's time |
Our own charge applies only where we prepare a Gazette file. It is quoted per case and shown as a separate line.
Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Asking the father to apply, when the record is the child's | The holder of the record applies |
| Filing a change of name notice for a misspelt father's name | If a Gazette is needed, it is a public notice |
| Calling the father's old name "wrongly written" after he changed it | It was right then. Use his Gazette |
| Trying to show a step-father as father by affidavit | That is a matter for a court or an adoption |
| Correcting to a spelling the father's own papers do not carry | Copy it from his identity proof |
| Missing a board's time limit after the result | Apply through the school at once |
| Writing the father's name in short on a new form | Write it in full, as on his Aadhaar |
| Typing "Late" or "Shri" as part of the name | Leave titles out of the name box |
| Correcting only one of several records | List them all, and start with the oldest |
A typical case we handle: a young woman in Haldwani found, when applying for a passport, that her class 12 marksheet had her father's name with one letter wrong. She was told to do a "name change". Her own name was fine, and so was her father's on his own papers. The board asked for Gazette proof, so she filed a public notice for the wrongly written name, and the board then corrected the marksheet on its own form. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
What is a lawyer's job, not ours
Any case where a different person is to be shown as father, a dispute about parentage, an adoption, and a refusal by a Registrar or a board. We prepare Gazette papers for a correction, and only where an office has asked for them.
When you do not need us
For a wrong spelling that your father's own papers disprove, you need only the office that issued your record. Where your father has changed his name, his Gazette is your proof. We are useful where a board or an office has asked for a public notice. Send us the papers and we will tell you which case you have, free.

Father's Name Change and Correction: The Short Version
First decide which case you have. A misspelt or shortened father's name in your record is a correction, made by the office that issued the paper, with your father's identity proof. If your father changed his own name, your old papers were right, and his Gazette is your proof. If a different person is named as father, it is a legal matter and no Gazette applies.
A Gazette public notice comes in only where a board or an office asks for one. To find out which case is yours, send the papers on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
