The district has many tehsils spread over ridges and valleys. A resident of Chaukhutia, Bhikiyasain or Sult does not go to Almora town for a certificate or a land record. Find the tehsil for your own address first.
What If One Surname Has Two Spellings?
Several family names of Kumaon are written in English in two accepted ways. Brothers in one house may carry both. A father's certificate says one, and his son's Aadhaar the other.

- None of these is a change of name. Each is a difference of spelling, and each is corrected at the office that holds the odd paper.
- Take the class 10 certificate as the measure, and bring the other papers to it.
- A father's name spelt one way on your certificate and another on his own papers is the same kind of difference. His identity papers explain it.
- Where both spellings have been used for a lifetime, on a degree, a service record and a passport, and cannot all be changed, a Gazette notice stating both ties them together.
- A family name taken later in place of an older second name is a different matter, and is treated more strictly by each office.

What Comes Up at Ranikhet, and for Soldiers' Families?
Ranikhet is a cantonment town with a regimental centre and its record office, and Almora town has a cantonment as well. The district sends many men to the forces.
- Births and deaths in a cantonment are registered by that cantonment's board, not by the municipal body. A correction goes to the board.
- A wife's name in a soldier's records was often the name used at home at the time of marriage. Check it against her Aadhaar now.
- A serving soldier corrects his family particulars through his unit.
- A pensioner or a widow applies to the record office named on the pension order, usually through the district's soldier welfare office. It may not be the one at Ranikhet.
- A recruit should have one name on his class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and home certificates before the rally.

What About Degrees From Two Universities?
Almora's college was for many years a campus of the university at Nainital. The town now has a state university of its own. A family here may hold degrees from both.
- A degree is corrected by the university that issued it. Look at the name of the university printed on the degree, not at where the college stands.
- An older degree from the Almora campus was issued by the university at Nainital, and a correction goes there.
- A recent degree issued by the university at Almora is corrected by that university.
- In both cases the proof is the class 10 certificate and the university's own enrolment record, and the request usually goes through the college.
- Neither reissues a degree for a change of name made after it was awarded. The Gazette notification links it.

Which Newspapers Serve for the Notice?
The Department of Publication asks for the change of name to be advertised in a daily local leading newspaper. It does not name newspapers.
- The Hindi dailies that reach the district carry Almora and Ranikhet pages in their Kumaon editions.
- Book the notice in the edition that reaches your own town.
- Choose a daily, not a weekly.
- In the hill tehsils the paper arrives late and sells out. Ask the agent to keep several copies of the day's issue.
