Name Change in Dehradun

The local side of a name change for people in Dehradun district: where we are, where each record is corrected in the city, which offices a Dehradun resident deals with, and what is different for the district's many central employees.

Quick answer

A name change in Dehradun follows the same three steps as anywhere in the state: an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette. What is local is where you go afterwards. Our associate office is at the Dehradun District Court on Haridwar Road, and the file for the Gazette of India is sent to Delhi.

Our associate office for a name change in Dehradun is at the district court on Haridwar Road, and most clients finish the whole Gazette file on WhatsApp without visiting.

This page is about name change in Dehradun, the district and the city. It does not repeat the process. It tells a resident where things are: our office, the kinds of office that correct each record here, and the points that come up often with a name change in Dehradun.

Where Is Our Dehradun Office?

How most Dehradun clients work with us

  • Photos of the papers on WhatsApp 9540005064
  • Drafts sent back for you to read and approve
  • Papers signed and couriered, or brought to the office
  • The Gazette file is prepared at our gazette desk in Delhi, where the Department of Publication is

You do not have to visit. People from Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Doiwala, Mussoorie and Chakrata usually finish the whole thing without coming into the city. A visit helps where the papers are many, or old, and you would rather lay them on a table.

We are a private documentation consultancy. We are not part of the court, and not a Government office.

What Are the Three Steps, for a Dehradun Resident?

The process is the same across the state and is set out in full elsewhere. This is the outline, with the local point at each step.

Step 1: Decide if you need a Gazette at all

A spelling slip on one paper is corrected at the office that issued it. Send us the papers and we will tell you, free.

Step 2: Sign the affidavit before a notary

Notaries sit at the district court and near the tehsil offices. Read our draft first. See name change affidavit in Uttarakhand.

Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, which for this district means one with a Dehradun edition. Keep the full original page.

Step 4: Sign the Gazette form, the undertaking and the certificate

With two witnesses. We prepare the typed copies and the CD.

Step 5: Pay the Government charge on BharatKosh

Online, from anywhere. Print the receipt.

Step 6: Send the file to the Department of Publication in Delhi, and wait for the Gazette

The Gazette of India is published online. Download the notification and print clear copies.

For the detail of each step, read newspaper notice for a gazette name change and how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi.

Where Is Each Record Corrected in Dehradun?

The Gazette changes nothing by itself. Each record is updated at its own office. These are the kinds of office a Dehradun resident deals with. Check the address and timings of each before you go.

Records and the office that corrects each for a Dehradun resident
RecordWhere a Dehradun resident goesOur page
AadhaarAn Aadhaar centre in the city, or at a bank or post office that offers updatesAadhaar
PANOnline, or through a PAN service centrePAN
PassportThe passport office and its service centre at Dehradun, by appointmentPassport
Driving licence and vehicle papersThe regional transport office, largely onlineDriving licence
Voter cardOnline, or the booth level officer for your areaVoter ID
Birth and death certificatesThe municipal corporation in the city, the cantonment board in a cantonment, the local body elsewhereBirth certificate
Residence, caste and income certificatesThe tehsil for your address, or the state's service portalResidence certificate
Land recordsThe tehsil where the land liesKhatauni
House tax and plots in the authority's schemesThe municipal corporation, and the development authorityProperty
Electricity connectionThe power corporation's sub-division for your areaElectricity bill
Doctors' and nurses' registrationThe state councils, which are in DehradunMedical council

Two local points. The district has several cantonments, and a birth or death in a cantonment is registered by that cantonment's board, not by the municipal corporation. And the district has more than one tehsil, so a certificate or a land record is corrected at the tehsil for that address, which may not be the one in the city.

Which Newspapers Have Dehradun Editions?

The Department of Publication asks for the change of name to be advertised in a daily local leading newspaper. It does not name newspapers. For a Dehradun resident, that means a daily that is printed for and widely read in the district.

  • Several Hindi dailies publish a Dehradun edition, and a number of English dailies do as well.
  • Choose a daily, not a weekly, and one a clerk in Delhi will recognise as a real newspaper of the place.
  • Book the notice in the edition for your own district. A notice in another city's edition invites a question.
  • Buy several copies on the day. The Department wants the original page, and offices here ask for one later.
  • Read the proof before it prints. A wrong letter in the notice means publishing again.

We do not sell newspaper space and take no commission on it. We give you the wording, and can tell you which dailies our Dehradun clients have used without trouble. See newspaper notice for a gazette name change.

What Is Different for Central Government and Defence Employees?

Dehradun has an unusual number of central establishments: survey, forest, petroleum and scientific institutions, defence laboratories and factories, the military academy and several cantonments. Many of the people who ask us about a name change here are serving employees, or their wives and children.

  • A serving central employee changes a name by the Government's 1987 procedure: a deed in the prescribed form, a notice in a prominent local newspaper and the Gazette of India. An affidavit is not what the office asks for.
  • The deed is witnessed as the Department of Publication's guideline requires, by officers of the employee's own department. Arrange that in the office before the deed is typed.
  • A woman employee's surname on marriage needs only an intimation and a request to her appointing authority.
  • A soldier's or officer's family has its particulars in the service record. A wife's or child's name is corrected through the unit while he serves, and through the record office after he retires.
  • Pensioners should check the spouse's name on the pension order.

Read name change for government employees, pension and family pension records and ECHS card name correction.

What About Students and Boarding Schools?

  • The district has many residential schools, most on the national boards, and several universities and institutes. Children from other states study here.
  • A correction of a name on a board certificate goes through the school to the board. The school's admission register decides what kind of request it is.
  • A child whose parents live in another state can still have the school apply. The parents' own papers come from their home state.
  • A minor's change of name in the Gazette is applied for by the parents, wherever the child is at school.
  • Students going abroad from Dehradun's schools should bring the passport, the class 10 certificate and Aadhaar to one name well before applying.

Read CBSE and ICSE marksheet name correction and name change in education documents.

What About Records From Before the State Was Formed?

Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000. A Dehradun resident born, schooled or employed before that holds papers issued under Uttar Pradesh.

  • A school certificate from before 2000 was issued by the Uttar Pradesh board, and a correction of it goes to that board.
  • A birth registered in Dehradun before 2000 is still in the local registrar's own register. The registrar here corrects it.
  • Land records stayed with the tehsil and were carried into the new state.
  • A caste or residence certificate issued before 2000 is best replaced by a fresh one from the tehsil, in your present name.
  • Where an old paper and a new one name the state differently, that is not a mismatch in your name. Offices here are used to it.
