Name Change in Champawat

The local side of a name change for people of Champawat district: how we serve its hill towns and its plains towns, where each record is corrected, and the points that come up here because one family's papers can name three different districts.

Quick answer

A name change in Champawat follows the same three steps as anywhere in the state: an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette. The Gazette of India file goes to Delhi. We serve Champawat, Lohaghat, Tanakpur and Banbasa on WhatsApp and by courier. An old paper naming another district is not a mismatch in your name.

The steps for a name change in Champawat are the same as anywhere in the state, with the Gazette of India file sent to Delhi by courier and records corrected at your own tehsil.

This page is about name change in Champawat district: Champawat, Lohaghat, Pati and Barakot in the hills, and Tanakpur and Banbasa in the plains. It does not repeat the process. It tells a resident where things are here, and covers the points that come up often with a name change in Champawat.

What Are the Three Steps, for a Champawat Resident?

The process is the same across the state and is set out in full elsewhere. This is the outline, with the local point at each step.

Step 1: Decide if you need a Gazette at all

A spelling slip on one paper is corrected at the office that issued it. Send us the papers and we will tell you, free.

Step 2: Sign the affidavit before a notary

Notaries sit at the court complexes at Champawat and Tanakpur and near the tehsil offices. Read our draft first. See name change affidavit in Uttarakhand.

Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, in the edition that reaches your part of the district. Keep the full original page.

Step 4: Sign the Gazette form, the undertaking and the certificate

With two witnesses, on the same day as the affidavit if you can. We prepare the typed copies and the CD.

Step 5: Pay the Government charge on BharatKosh

Online, from anywhere. Print the receipt.

Step 6: Send the file to the Department of Publication in Delhi, and wait for the Gazette

The Gazette of India is published online. Download the notification and print clear copies.

For the detail, read newspaper notice for a gazette name change and how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi.

Where Is Each Record Corrected?

Each record is updated at its own office. These are the kinds of office a resident of the district deals with. Check the address and timings of each before you go.

Hill Towns and Plains Towns: Which Office Is Yours?

The district has two halves that hardly resemble each other. The headquarters and most tehsils are in the hills. Tanakpur and Banbasa lie in the plains at the foot of the road, on the river and the border.

The hillsChampawat, Lohaghat, Pati, BarakotYour own tehsilChampawat town, close by
The plainsTanakpur, BanbasaThe tehsil for the plains townsChampawat town, up the hill road
  • Most of what a name change touches is done at the tehsil, which is near you in either half.
  • From the plains towns, the towns of the neighbouring plains district are an easier trip than the district's own headquarters. That does not change which office holds your record.
  • A notary near any tehsil serves for the affidavit.
  • The Gazette file goes by courier from the nearest town. Courier is quicker from the plains towns than from the hills.
  • Families on the border with ties across it should read the border section of our Pithoragarh page. The same points apply here.

Why Do One Family's Papers Name Three Districts?

Champawat is one of the youngest districts of the state, formed in 1997. A person of sixty spent half a life in another district, without ever moving house. The district named on a paper depends on when the paper was made, and on which half of the district the family lives in.

What older papers from Champawat district are likely to name
Where the family livesAn older paper may nameA paper since 1997 names
The hill tehsilsPithoragarh district, and before 1960 Almora districtChampawat
The plains townsNainital district, and for a short time Udham Singh Nagar districtChampawat
Either half, before 9 November 2000Uttar Pradesh as the stateUttarakhand since then
  • None of this is a mismatch in your name. It needs no affidavit and no Gazette.
  • An office outside the state may ask why a birth certificate, a school record and an Aadhaar card name three districts. A fresh residence certificate from your tehsil, naming the present district, answers it.
  • Records were carried into the new district. Land records are with the tehsil that now serves the village, and the family register with its gram panchayat.
  • Where an old register cannot be found here, ask the tehsil which office of the earlier district may still hold it.
  • On a new application, write the present district. If a form has room, add the earlier one in brackets.

Read name change in residence certificate.

What About Offices That Are Outside the District?

A small, young district does not have every office. Several that a name change touches sit in bigger towns elsewhere.

Usually outside the district

  • The passport office and its service centres
  • The regional offices of the provident fund and other central bodies
  • The university that awarded your degree
  • The state school board
  • A soldier's record office
  • The Government press, and the Department of Publication

How to deal with them from here

  • Start online. Most of these take the request on a portal
  • Send papers through the local link: the school for the board, the college for the university, the employer for the fund, the soldier welfare office for a record office
  • Make one trip, with everything, where an appointment in person is required
  • Take the published Gazette with you on that trip, not after it

None of these offices being far away is a reason to pay a middleman. Each can be reached directly. Read name change in passport, name change in EPFO and UAN records and name change in education documents.

Which Newspapers Serve for the Notice?

The Department of Publication asks for the change of name to be advertised in a daily local leading newspaper. It does not name newspapers.

  • The Hindi dailies that reach the district carry Champawat pages in their Kumaon editions.
  • The plains towns get the paper early in the morning. The hill towns get it later. Ask the agent in advance to keep several copies of the issue your notice is in.
  • Choose a daily, not a weekly.
  • Read the proof before it prints, and keep the full original page.

We do not sell newspaper space. We give you the wording. See newspaper notice for a gazette name change.

Rarely. Most records are corrected at the tehsil for the plains towns.

Do you have an office in Champawat or Tanakpur?

Commonly 3 to 7 weeks, plus courier time each way.

When was Champawat district formed, and from which districts?

On 15 September 1997, carved out of Pithoragarh and Nainital districts, according to the district administration. That is why older papers from the district can name either of them.

How many tehsils does Champawat district have?

Five: Barakot, Champawat, Lohaghat, Pati and Purnagiri, with two sub-tehsils, Pulla and Munch. Your residence and caste certificates come from the tehsil that serves your village.

Why does an old paper name Champawat tehsil for a village now in Lohaghat or Pati?

Until the 2001 Census the district had only Champawat tehsil. Purnagiri was carved out in October 2003, and Pati and Lohaghat in early 2004, so an older paper can name a tehsil that no longer serves your village. It is not a mismatch in your name.
