Name Change in Chamoli

The local side of a name change for people of Chamoli district: how we serve Gopeshwar and the upper valleys, where each record is corrected, and the points that come up here when a town has been renamed, when papers are lost in a disaster, and for those who work the pilgrim season.

Quick answer

A name change in Chamoli follows the same three steps as anywhere in the state: an affidavit, a newspaper notice and the Gazette. The Gazette of India file goes to Delhi. We serve Gopeshwar, Jyotirmath, Karnaprayag and Gairsain on WhatsApp and by courier. A renamed town on an old paper is not a mismatch in your name.

A renamed town on an old paper is not a mismatch in your name, and lost papers are replaced by duplicates in the name as first recorded, at your own tehsil in Chamoli.

This page is about name change in Chamoli district: Gopeshwar, Jyotirmath, Karnaprayag, Gairsain, Tharali and the upper valleys. It does not repeat the process. It tells a resident where things are here, and covers the points that come up often with a name change in Chamoli.

For the steps themselves, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

How Do We Serve Chamoli?

We have no office in Chamoli district. Our associate office is in Dehradun, and our gazette desk is in Delhi. A name change needs no visit to either.

How a Chamoli client works with us

  • Photos of the papers on WhatsApp 9540005064
  • We say, free, if a Gazette is needed
  • Drafts sent back for you to read and approve
  • You sign before a notary near you, and courier the papers once
  • The published Gazette is sent to you as a file to print

Our office, for the record

Dehradun District Court, 47/9, Haridwar Road, Near Prince Chowk, Court Road, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, 248001

Mon to Sat: 9 AM to 6 PM

Call 9540005026. The road down is long and closes without warning in the rains. You do not need to take it for this.

We are a private documentation consultancy, and not a Government office.

What Are the Three Steps, for a Chamoli Resident?

The process is the same across the state and is set out in full elsewhere. This is the outline, with the local point at each step.

Step 1: Decide if you need a Gazette at all

A spelling slip on one paper is corrected at the office that issued it. Send us the papers and we will tell you, free.

Step 2: Sign the affidavit before a notary

Notaries sit at the court complex at Gopeshwar and near the tehsil offices. Read our draft first. See name change affidavit in Uttarakhand.

Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper, in the edition that reaches this district. Keep the full original page.

Step 4: Sign the Gazette form, the undertaking and the certificate

With two witnesses, on the same day as the affidavit if you can. We prepare the typed copies and the CD.

Step 5: Pay the Government charge on BharatKosh

Online, from anywhere. Print the receipt.

Step 6: Send the file to the Department of Publication in Delhi, and wait for the Gazette

The Gazette of India is published online. Download the notification and print clear copies.

For the detail, read newspaper notice for a gazette name change and how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi.

Where Is Each Record Corrected?

Each record is updated at its own office. These are the kinds of office a resident of the district deals with. Check the address and timings of each before you go.

The district's headquarters is at Gopeshwar, and its tehsils run up three or four separate valleys. A resident of Gairsain, Tharali or the upper valley towns deals with that tehsil, not with Gopeshwar.

What If the Town Itself Has Been Renamed?

Places in this district have been officially renamed in recent years. The tehsil long written as Joshimath is now officially Jyotirmath, and other places have new names too. So a person's older papers carry one name of the place, and newer ones another.

  • That is a change in the place's name, not in yours. No office should treat it as a mismatch in a person's name, and no Gazette or affidavit is needed from you for it.
  • Old papers stay valid. A birth certificate, a land record or a school certificate with the earlier place name is not reissued for that reason alone.
  • Use the present name on new applications, and add the earlier one in brackets if a form has room, so that a clerk elsewhere can connect the two.
  • Aadhaar's address can be updated to the present name in the ordinary way, when you next update anything.
  • Where an office outside the state is puzzled, show it the Government's notification renaming the place. The tehsil or the local body can point you to it.

The same is true of an old paper naming an earlier district or Uttar Pradesh. A place's history is not a defect in your identity. Read name change in residence certificate.

What If Papers Are Lost, or Needed, After a Disaster?

This district has known floods, landslides and sinking ground. Families have lost houses, and with them the trunk of papers. Relief and compensation are then paid on a list, into a bank account, against a name.

Replacing lost papers

  • Start with Aadhaar. It can be downloaded again with the number and the linked mobile
  • A certified copy of a birth, death or marriage record comes from the registrar who holds the register
  • A duplicate marksheet comes from the board, through the school
  • A certified copy of a land record or a registered deed comes from the tehsil or the sub-registrar
  • Report the loss to the police where an office asks for it
  • A duplicate carries the name as originally recorded. It is not the moment to change a spelling

Relief and compensation

  • The list is drawn from the survey of affected houses and the land and house tax records
  • The name on the list has to match the claimant's Aadhaar and bank account for the money to be paid
  • A house still in a dead parent's name brings the heirs into it. That needs proof of succession, not a name correction
  • A difference of spelling is put right at the tehsil with identity proof
  • Where a family member has died or is missing, the death certificate's name is compared with the other papers

None of this needs a Gazette, unless a living claimant has in fact used two different names. Ask the tehsil what it wants, and do not pay anyone who offers to "get the name fixed" on a relief list. Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate and name change in property documents.

What Comes Up for Those Who Work the Pilgrim Season?

Much of the district's income comes in the months when the shrines and the high roads are open. Hotels, shops, guides, porters, mule owners and drivers all work to that calendar, and many winter elsewhere.

  • A hotel, a lodge or a shop is registered in its owner's name. Where the owner's Aadhaar and PAN carry one spelling and the trade licence or the tax registration another, payments and renewals stall just as the season opens.
  • Check the registrations in the closed months, and correct them then.
  • Registration for the season's services is checked against Aadhaar. A driver's licence, a vehicle's papers and a guide's or porter's registration should all match it.
  • A business passed from father to son is a new registration for the son, not a change of name in the father's.
  • A family that winters lower down should keep one address on its papers, and say where the post reaches it in each season.

Does Gairsain Have the State's Offices for This?

Gairsain, in this district, is the state's summer capital, and the legislature has met there. People sometimes ask if a name change can now be done there. It cannot, and it never needed a capital.

  • The Gazette of India is published by the Department of Publication in Delhi.
  • The state's own Gazette is printed at the Government press at Roorkee.
  • Neither has a counter at Gairsain, Gopeshwar or Dehradun for a private change of name.
  • The file travels by post or courier. Where you live makes no difference to the fee or the time, beyond the courier.

Read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.

Which Newspapers Serve for the Notice?

The Department of Publication asks for the change of name to be advertised in a daily local leading newspaper. It does not name newspapers.

  • The Hindi dailies that reach the district carry Chamoli pages in their Garhwal editions.
  • The paper reaches the upper valley towns late, and not at all on days the road is shut. Ask the agent in advance to keep several copies of the issue your notice is in.
  • Choose a daily, not a weekly.
  • Read the proof before it prints, and keep the full original page.

We do not sell newspaper space. We give you the wording. See newspaper notice for a gazette name change.

In June 2024 the Centre approved the Uttarakhand Government's proposal to rename the Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district as Jyotirmath. Papers made before then still say Joshimath, and stay valid.

Why was Joshimath renamed Jyotirmath?

Jyotirmath was the town's ancient name, and Jyotir Peeth is one of the four cardinal mathas believed to have been set up by Adi Shankaracharya. Over time people came to call the place Joshimath.

Was any other tehsil renamed at the same time?

Large cracks appeared in many of the town's roads and in hundreds of buildings because of land subsidence. Any relief or compensation claim is paid against the name on the list, so check it against your Aadhaar and bank account.

My papers were lost when we left a damaged house. Where do I start?

With Aadhaar, which can be downloaded again, then certified copies from each office that holds a register. See lost or no documents to prove a name.
