Name Change in Udyam and GST Registration in Uttarakhand

For a business owner whose own name has changed or is recorded wrongly: how a proprietor's name sits in GST and Udyam, the order in which records are updated, and how that differs from changing the business's name.

Quick answer

A name change in Udyam and GST registration follows the owner's PAN and Aadhaar. Update those first. In GST, the legal name is amended on Form GST REG-14 within 15 days of the change, and needs the officer's approval. Udyam is updated on its portal against Aadhaar. A change of PAN itself needs a fresh GST registration.

A shop owner in Uttarakhand checking the proprietor name on a PAN card against a GST registration certificate and a Udyam certificate
For a proprietor in Uttarakhand, a name change runs through PAN first, then the GST legal name amendment within 15 days, then Udyam, the licences and the current account.

A shopkeeper or a small manufacturer carries his own name into a dozen business records. A name change in Udyam and GST registration is therefore two questions: has the owner's name changed, or the business's? This page explains name change in Udyam and GST registration for business owners in Uttarakhand, mainly proprietors, and the other registrations that follow.

We do not file GST amendments or deal with tax offices. We prepare the Gazette notification, which comes in where an owner has changed a name by choice and PAN needs it. For tax filings, use your accountant. For PAN, read name change in PAN card in Uttarakhand.

Is It the Owner's Name or the Business's Name?

The owner's name and the business's name compared
PointThe owner's nameThe business's name
What it isThe name of the person who owns or runs the businessThe name the business trades under
ExampleRajesh Singh RawatRawat General Store
Where it comes fromThe person's PAN and AadhaarThe owner's choice, or the firm's deed or the company's incorporation
In GSTFor a proprietor, the legal nameThe trade name
How it changesLike any person's name, then carried into each registrationBy the owner's decision, and an amendment of each registration
A Gazette?Where the person has changed a name by choiceNo. A business's trading name is not changed by Gazette

This page is about the first column. A shopkeeper who wants "Rawat General Store" to become "Rawat Super Mart" has a commercial decision to register, and no need of us. A shopkeeper whose own name on PAN is changing has every registration to follow it.

How Does It Differ by Kind of Business?

Kinds of business and where a person's name appears in each
KindWhose PAN the registrations rest onWhere a person's name appears
Sole proprietorshipThe proprietor's own PANEverywhere. The proprietor is the business in law
Partnership firmThe firm's PANEach partner, in the deed and in the list of partners on each registration
Limited liability partnership or companyThe entity's PANEach director or designated partner, by an identification number, and the authorised signatory
Hindu undivided familyThe family's PANThe karta

For a proprietor, a personal change of name runs through every business paper. For a partner or a director, it touches only the entries that list that person, and the entity's own name and PAN are untouched.

What Does GST Allow to Be Amended?

A change in registration details is made by an amendment application. These points are as tax guides set out the rule.

PointPosition
The formForm GST REG-14, filed online on the GST portal
The timeWithin 15 days of the change
Core fieldsThe legal name of the business where PAN is unchanged, the addition or deletion of partners or directors, and the place of business. These need the tax officer's approval
The officer's timeFifteen working days to approve, by an order in Form GST REG-15, or to ask for more
Non-core fieldsEverything else, such as the trade name, contact details and bank details. These do not need approval
What cannot be amendedA change of PAN, or a change in the kind of business that brings a new PAN. That needs a fresh registration
  • The legal name in GST is tied to PAN. So the PAN record is updated first, and the GST amendment then carries the same name.
  • A proprietor's legal name is the proprietor's own name as on PAN.
  • The registration number does not change on an amendment.

Have your accountant file it. The portal's steps and the documents asked for change, and a core amendment goes before an officer.

How Does Udyam Hold a Name?

Udyam is the registration for micro, small and medium enterprises, made on a Government portal. We could not confirm the portal's current instructions on a change of name, so this is as we understand it.

  • Registration is made on the Aadhaar of the proprietor, the managing partner or the karta, verified by a code sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  • The name of the entrepreneur is entered as on Aadhaar.
  • The enterprise's PAN and GST number are linked, and its figures are drawn from tax records.
  • The portal has an option to update a registration, entered with the Udyam number and a code.
  • Registration and updating are free, and rest on self-declaration.

So once Aadhaar and PAN carry the new name, the Udyam record is updated online to match, and a fresh certificate is printed. Where the portal does not let the name field be edited, raise it through the portal's grievance option or the district industries centre.

Udyam registration is free. Websites that look official and charge a fee for registering or "updating" are private. Use only the Government's own portal.

Which Case Is Yours?

A Gazette appears twice, both times for a person's own PAN. No business registration asks for one directly.

What Is the Order of Work for a Proprietor?

Step 1: Get the paper that records the change

The marriage certificate, or the Gazette notification. For a spelling, the proof Aadhaar and PAN ask for.

Step 2: Update Aadhaar

PAN and Udyam both follow it.

Step 3: Update PAN

The number stays the same. Wait for the new card.

Step 4: Update the business's bank account

The current account is in the proprietor's name with the trade name. The bank changes it on the same paper.

Step 5: File the GST amendment

For the legal name, within 15 days of the change, through your accountant.

Step 6: Update Udyam

On the portal, and print the fresh certificate.

Step 7: Update the local and sector licences

The shop registration, the trade licence, and any food, drug or other licence.

Step 8: Change your stationery, and tell those you deal with

Invoices, the signboard where it shows your name, suppliers, customers and lenders.

The 15 days in GST run from the change. Plan the sequence so that the PAN update and the GST filing fall close together, and ask your accountant which date he will treat as the date of change.

Which Other Registrations Follow?

Other business registrations that carry an owner's name and who keeps each
RegistrationKept by
Shop and establishment registrationThe state's labour department
Trade licenceThe municipal body
Food business licence or registrationThe food safety authority
Drug licenceThe state's drug control office
Importer exporter codeThe foreign trade office
Professional and labour registrationsThe provident fund and state insurance bodies, where the business has employees
Tourism, transport and excise licencesThe department concerned

Each has its own form for a change in the licence holder's particulars, and most are now made online. All of them ask for the updated PAN and Aadhaar, and some for the GST certificate as amended. So do them after GST.

A licence is personal to its holder. An office will look to see that the holder is the same person under a new name, and not a new person. The marriage certificate or the Gazette notification is what shows that.

What About the Current Account, and Invoices?

  • The current account. A proprietor's account is opened on the proprietor's identity and the business's registrations. The bank updates the proprietor's name on the marriage certificate or Gazette notification, under the Reserve Bank's rule on identity papers.
  • Cheques and payment links. Customers pay the trade name, which has not changed. Check that the account still accepts payments in it.
  • Invoices. A tax invoice shows the supplier's name and GST number. Use the name as on the GST certificate, and change the invoice format when the amendment is approved.
  • Returns already filed. They stay as filed. Nothing is revised for a change of name.
  • Loans. Tell the lender. A business loan to a proprietor is a loan to the person.
  • Contracts and tenders. Give the other side a copy of the linking paper, so that old agreements in the earlier name are not questioned.

See name change in bank records in Uttarakhand.

What About Partners and Directors?

A partner in a firm

  • Update the partner's own Aadhaar and PAN
  • Record the change in the firm's papers, by a supplementary deed or a note signed by the partners, as your lawyer advises
  • Inform the Registrar of Firms, where the firm is registered
  • Amend the list of partners in GST, which is a core field
  • Update the firm's bank mandate

A director or designated partner

  • Update the person's own Aadhaar and PAN
  • Update the director's identification record with the company law authorities, on their form for a change in a director's particulars
  • The company's records and filings then carry the new name
  • Update the digital signature, which is issued in the person's name
  • Amend the authorised signatory in GST

These are a company secretary's or an accountant's filings. Guides report that a director who has changed a name is asked for the Gazette notification or other proof with that form. Ask your professional what the current form requires.

What Happens When a Proprietor Dies?

A proprietorship is the proprietor. It does not pass to a son or a wife by correcting a name.

  • The successor needs a registration on the successor's own PAN. Guides note that on the death of a sole proprietor the successor registers afresh in GST.
  • The dead proprietor's registration is cancelled, and the business's stock and tax credit are passed to the successor by the procedure GST provides for a transfer of business.
  • Udyam and the licences are taken afresh, or transferred where the licence's own rules allow.
  • The current account is settled as a dead customer's account, and a new one opened.

This needs an accountant, and often a lawyer, at once. Trading on a dead person's registration creates tax liability and trouble for the family. See nominee name mismatch in a bank claim.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?

Only for a person. Where a proprietor, a partner or a director has changed a name by choice, PAN and Aadhaar ask for a Gazette, and every business registration follows PAN. PAN is a central record, so the Gazette of India is the one to use.

Step 1: Confirm that it is your own name that is changing

A trading name needs no Gazette.

Step 2: Speak to your accountant about timing

Avoid the weeks around a return's due date, a tender or a loan.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The spelling that will go on PAN and so on every registration.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, PAN and the bank, and hand your accountant the papers for GST and the rest.

Keep several clear prints of the notification. Suppliers, lenders and licensing offices will each want one. See gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do for a Business Owner?

The state's own licensing offices may accept it. PAN, GST and the bank are central or national, which is why business owners use the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Read what the PAN correction form lists as proof

PAN comes first, and everything follows it.

Step 2: Think about GST, the bank and your lenders

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Business Owners Make?

Common mistakes in a name change in business registrations
MistakeWhat to do
Amending GST before PANPAN first. The legal name in GST follows it
Applying for a new PAN in the new nameNever. Correct the existing PAN
Taking a fresh GST registration for a change of nameAmend the existing one. The number stays
Missing the 15 daysPlan the filing with your accountant
Confusing a trading name with the owner's nameDecide which is changing
Paying a website to update UdyamIt is free on the Government's portal
Forgetting the local licencesList every registration and work down it
Issuing invoices in a name GST has not yet approvedUse the name on the current certificate
Treating a dead proprietor's business as a change of nameThe successor registers afresh

A typical case we handle: a woman running a boutique in Dehradun as a proprietor changed her surname on Aadhaar after marriage and nothing else. Her PAN and GST still carried her maiden name, her bank flagged the difference, and a payment gateway held her settlements. She did not need a Gazette. She updated PAN on her marriage certificate, her accountant filed the GST amendment for the legal name, she updated Udyam online, and the gateway released the money on the amended certificate. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

What is an accountant's job, not ours

The GST amendment, a transfer of business, company and firm filings, and anything to do with returns or a notice.

When you do not need us

For a trading name, a spelling on PAN, or a married surname. Those rest on the registrations' own forms and on a marriage certificate. We are useful only where an owner, a partner or a director has changed a name by choice and PAN needs a Gazette first.

Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Business registrations are amended online. The Gazette file, where one is needed, is prepared on WhatsApp, so an owner need not leave the shop.

People Also Ask About a Name Change in GST and Udyam

How do I change the proprietor's name in GST?

Update PAN first, then file a core amendment for the legal name.

Can the legal name be changed in GST?

Yes, by amendment, where PAN is unchanged. It needs the officer's approval.

Do I need a new GST number after changing my name?

No. An amendment keeps the same number.

How do I change my name in Udyam registration?

Update Aadhaar and PAN, then update the registration on the Udyam portal.

Is a gazette needed to change a name in GST?

Not by GST. PAN asks for one where a person has changed a name by choice.

What happens to GST registration when a proprietor dies?

The successor registers afresh. It is not a change of name.

What are the new MSME limits for Udyam?

From 1 April 2025, under notification S.O. 1364(E) of 21 March 2025: micro up to Rs 2.5 crore investment and Rs 10 crore turnover, small up to Rs 25 crore and Rs 100 crore, and medium up to Rs 125 crore and Rs 500 crore.

Do I have to re-register on Udyam after the 2025 limits?

No immediate re-registration is needed while the enterprise stays within its limits. Where it moves to a higher category, the Udyam record is updated, and the same update can carry an owner's corrected name.

Is Udyam registration free?

Yes. Registration on the official Udyam portal is free and paperless, on self-declaration with Aadhaar and PAN verification. Do not pay a private website for it.

What replaced Udyog Aadhaar?

Udyam Registration replaced Udyog Aadhaar under the MSMED Act, 2006. An old Udyog Aadhaar in a previous name is replaced by a Udyam registration in the name on Aadhaar now.

Whose Aadhaar is used for Udyam registration?

The Aadhaar of the proprietor, a partner or a director, entered with the name exactly as on Aadhaar. A mismatch with PAN stops the verification.

Does Udyam take its figures from tax records?

Yes. The enterprise's investment and turnover are drawn from its PAN and GST records, so the name on PAN, GST and Aadhaar has to agree. See name mismatch on the income tax portal.

The GST points on the form, the 15 days, core and non-core fields and what cannot be amended are as tax guides set out the rule. We did not read the rule in the Government's own text. We could not confirm the Udyam portal's current instructions, so that section is as we understand it. The notes on other licences, partners, directors and a proprietor's death are general guidance. Udyam and GST Registration: The Short Version

Decide first if it is your own name or the business's trading name that is changing. For your own name, update Aadhaar and PAN, then the bank, then amend the legal name in GST within 15 days, then update Udyam and the local licences. The GST number stays. A change of PAN, or a proprietor's death, needs a fresh registration.
