Vehicle RC Name Correction in Uttarakhand
When the owner's name on a registration certificate is misspelt or out of date: how it differs from a transfer, where to apply, and why the insurance policy has to follow.
A vehicle RC name correction is made by the registering authority that holds the vehicle's record, on an application by the owner with proof of the right name. It is a correction for the same owner, not a transfer of ownership, and the registration number stays the same. The insurance policy should be changed to match.

A vehicle RC name correction is easy to put off, until an insurer queries a claim or a buyer's transfer is held up. A wrong letter that sat unnoticed for years then costs weeks. This page explains vehicle RC name correction for owners in Uttarakhand: what it is, where to apply, the proof, and the papers that follow.
We do not deal with the transport office for you. Our work is the Gazette, which matters here only where an owner has taken a new name. For the driving licence, read name change in driving licence in Uttarakhand.
What Does a Registration Certificate Record?
A registration certificate is issued by a registering authority, which in practice is a Regional Transport Office or an Assistant Regional Transport Office. The record sits in the national Vahan system, and the card is printed from it.
- It records the registered owner's name, the name of the owner's father or husband, and the address.
- It records the vehicle: its number, class, maker, chassis and engine numbers.
- It records any hypothecation, which is the lender's interest where the vehicle is on loan.
- The same record shows on the Government's mobile app and in your digital locker.
The name on this record decides who can sell the vehicle, who is paid on an insurance claim, and who answers for a traffic challan. That is why a small error in it matters more than the same error on most other papers.
What Is the Difference Between a Correction, a Change and a Transfer?
| Point | Correction | Change of the owner's own name | Transfer of ownership |
|---|---|---|---|
| What happened | The record misspelt the owner's name | The same owner now has a different name | The vehicle has a new owner |
| Example | Bist entered for Bisht | A surname after marriage, or a name changed by Gazette | A sale, a gift or a succession |
| Does the owner change? | No | No | Yes |
| Proof | An identity paper with the right name | A marriage certificate or a Gazette notification | The transfer forms signed by both sides, or the papers of succession |
| Registration number | Same | Same | Same, in the new owner's name |
Counters sometimes treat any request to alter the owner's name as a transfer, because that is the request they see most. Say clearly at the start that the owner is the same person, and that you are asking for the particulars to be corrected, not for the vehicle to be transferred.
How Does a Wrong Name Get on a Registration Certificate?
- At the showroom. A new vehicle is registered from the details the dealer enters, usually taken from the sale invoice. A slip in the invoice becomes the name on the certificate.
- From an old paper record. Older registrations were typed into the computer system later, and errors crept in.
- From a short form. The buyer signed as H. C. Joshi, and that is what was registered.
- From life moving on. The entry was right, and the owner has since married or changed a name.
The first three are corrections. The fourth is a change of the owner's own name. Knowing which you have tells you which proof to carry.
When you buy a new vehicle, check the name on the invoice against your Aadhaar before you pay. It is the cheapest moment to catch this.
How Do You Check What Your Record Says?
- Look at the card. Read the owner's name, the relation's name and the address.
- Look at the system. The Parivahan portal and the Government's mobile app show the registration data for your vehicle number. The card and the system can differ, and it is the system that counts.
- Look at the insurance policy. See if the insured's name matches the registration.
- Look at your identity papers. Aadhaar and PAN, and your driving licence.
- Write down each form of your name, and mark the one that is wrong.
If only the card is wrong and the system is right, you may need only a fresh card. If the system is wrong, you need the record corrected.
How Do You Apply for the Correction?
We could not find one official procedure published for Uttarakhand, so this is the general method. One state's transport commissioner has directed that an owner who finds the data in the system incorrect applies to the original registering authority for correction of the registration particulars. Ask your office how it takes such a request.
Step 1: Decide which of the three cases you have
A correction, a change of your own name, or in truth a transfer.
Step 2: Find the registering authority that holds the record
It is the office where the vehicle is registered. The first letters and numbers of the registration mark show it.
Step 3: Ask how it takes the request
Online through the vehicle services on the Parivahan portal, on paper at the counter, or both. Ask for the form and the fee.
Step 4: Apply as the same owner
State the name as recorded and as it should read, and that ownership has not changed.
Step 5: Attach the proof
The original registration certificate, your identity paper, and the paper behind the change.
Step 6: Pay the fee and keep the receipt
There is usually a charge for the fresh card.
Step 7: Check the system, then the card
Look up the vehicle number again once the office has acted, and read the new card when it arrives.
Step 8: Tell the insurer
Have the policy endorsed in the corrected name.
Which Proof Should You Carry?
This is a checklist to start from, as guides commonly report it. The registering authority decides what it needs.
For any request
- The original registration certificate
- Your identity paper in the right name, such as Aadhaar
- Proof of address
- A valid insurance policy and pollution certificate
- The application, and the fee receipt
The paper behind it
- For a spelling: a paper with the right spelling, and the sale invoice if it helps
- For a surname after marriage: the marriage certificate
- For a new name: the Gazette notification
- An affidavit that both forms are the same person, where the office asks for one
- The lender's letter, if the vehicle is on loan and the office asks
For the affidavit, see name spelling correction affidavit. Update your Aadhaar and your driving licence first where you can, so the office sees your other papers already in the right name.
Why Must the Insurance Policy Follow?
A motor insurance policy is a contract with the owner named on it. At the time of a claim, the insurer compares the policy with the registration certificate and with the claimant's identity.
- Where the three do not agree, the insurer may ask for an explanation before it pays.
- Ask the insurer for an endorsement that corrects the insured's name, once the registration is corrected.
- Give it the corrected registration certificate and your identity proof.
- At the next renewal, check the name again. Renewals copy the old entry.
Do this even if the registration was right all along and only the policy was wrong. An insurer's own typing slip is corrected by the insurer, with no visit to the transport office.
What If the Vehicle Is on Loan?
- The lender's interest is recorded on the registration certificate. The loan account, the registration and your identity papers should all carry one name.
- Tell the lender about the correction, and ask if it needs to give a letter for the transport office.
- Have the lender correct the name in the loan account as well.
- It matters most when the loan is closed. The lender's no objection letter and the form to remove the hypothecation are issued in the borrower's name, and they must match the registration.
A mismatch found on the day you close a loan delays the removal of the lender's name. Sort it out while the loan is running.
Why Correct the Name Before You Sell?
A transfer of ownership is made on forms signed by the seller and the buyer. The seller is the registered owner, as the record names that person.
- If the name on the registration differs from the seller's identity papers, the office may hold the transfer.
- The buyer then cannot get the vehicle in his or her name, and the seller stays answerable for it.
- Correct the registration first, then sign the transfer forms in the corrected name.
- If time is short, ask the office if it will take the correction and the transfer together.
A vehicle that has been sold in fact but not transferred on record is a risk to the seller. Challans, and worse, come to the registered owner.
What If the Registered Owner Has Died?
Families often ask to "change the name" on a parent's vehicle. That is a transfer of ownership on the death of the owner, not a name correction.
- The motor vehicle rules have a separate form and procedure for a transfer on death, in favour of the person who succeeds to the vehicle.
- The transport office will ask for the death certificate and for proof of succession, as its list says.
- The insurer has to be told as well, so the policy can be moved.
- Where the family does not agree, or the vehicle is on loan, take a lawyer's advice.
We do not handle transfers. A Gazette notification has no part in one.
How Do You Get a Gazette for an Owner's New Name?
Use this only where the owner has taken a new name. The same Gazette serves Aadhaar, PAN, the licence and the registration. The notice goes in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Confirm that your case is a change of name
A spelling, a short form or a surname after marriage usually does not need a Gazette.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The same spelling you will use on every paper.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and an undertaking showing the old and the new name.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update your records in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, then the licence, then the registration and the insurance.
Will the Registering Authority Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
A registering authority is a state office, so a state notice may well serve for it. Your other records are the reason to think twice.
Step 1: Ask the registering authority what it accepts
At the enquiry counter, before you choose.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, PAN and the insurer
If one Gazette has to serve them all, the Gazette of India is the safer choice.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice and carry it to the office
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Owners Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Leaving a wrong spelling for years | Correct it before a claim or a sale forces the issue |
| Letting the counter treat a correction as a transfer | Say at the start that the owner is the same person |
| Using a "name correction" to move a vehicle to someone else | That is a transfer, with its own forms |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a showroom's typing slip | Carry an identity paper with the right spelling |
| Correcting the registration and leaving the insurance | Ask the insurer for an endorsement |
| Not telling the lender | Have the loan account corrected too |
| Going to the office where you live, not where the vehicle is registered | Find the registering authority that holds the record |
| Checking only the card | Look up the record in the system |
| Signing a sale in a name the record does not have | Correct first, then transfer |
A typical case we handle: a schoolteacher in Haldwani bought a scooter in her maiden name and married a year later. When she sold it, the buyer's transfer was held, because her Aadhaar now carried her married surname. She asked us for a Gazette. Her marriage certificate linked the two names. The office took the transfer forms with a copy of that certificate, and no Gazette was needed. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, a short form or a surname after marriage, you need the registering authority, the insurer and one good document. A transfer, on sale or on death, is not our work at all. We are useful only where an owner has taken a new name and a Gazette is the proof asked for.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The registration is dealt with at the office where the vehicle is registered. The Gazette file, where one is needed, is prepared on WhatsApp.
People Also Ask About an RC Name Correction
How can I correct the owner's name on my RC?
Apply to the registering authority that holds the record, as the same owner, with proof of the right name.
Is an RC name correction the same as a transfer of ownership?
No. A correction is for the same owner. A transfer puts the vehicle in another person's name.
Is a gazette required to change the name on an RC?
For an owner's new name, it is the proof usually asked for. Not for a spelling or a surname after marriage.
Will my vehicle number change?
No. The registration number stays the same.
Do I need to change my insurance after an RC name correction?
Yes. Ask the insurer to endorse the policy in the corrected name.
How do I change the RC after the owner's death?
That is a transfer on death, with its own form and proof of succession. It is not a name correction.
Can I add a nominee to my vehicle RC?
Yes. Changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 let an owner add a nominee in the registration certificate. Existing owners can add one through an online application, and new owners at the time of registration, with proof of the nominee's identity. Give the nominee's name exactly as on that proof.
What must a nominee do after the owner dies?
The nominee can use the vehicle for 3 months from the owner's death, provided the nominee has told the registering authority of the death, and of the intention to use the vehicle, within 30 days.
Which form is used to transfer an RC after the owner's death?
Form 31. The nominee applies in Form 31 to the registering authority within 3 months for the vehicle to be transferred into the nominee's name. The death certificate's name should match the RC.
Can RC services be done online with Aadhaar?
Yes. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways made 58 services on licences, registration and transfer of ownership available online with Aadhaar authentication, on a voluntary basis, by a notification of 16 September 2022. The name on Aadhaar should match the record for this to work smoothly.
What if I do not have Aadhaar?
Under the same notification, a person without an Aadhaar number can take the service in physical form, by establishing identity with another document before the authority.
Is a change of address on the RC an online service?
Yes. Change of address in the certificate of registration is among the 58 services listed. For a correction of the owner's name, ask your office how it takes the request.

Vehicle RC Name Correction: The Short Version
A registration certificate names the owner. Where that name is misspelt or out of date, the same owner applies to the registering authority that holds the record, with proof, and the number stays the same. That is a correction. A sale or a succession is a transfer, which is a different process.
Have the insurance policy and any loan account corrected to match, and do it before a claim or a sale. A Gazette is needed only for an owner's new name. To check your case, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
