Name Change for Railway and Army Candidates From Uttarakhand
For young people preparing for railway recruitment or an army rally: how these two recruiters read a name, why the class 10 certificate decides, and when a change of name has to be complete.
A name change for railway and army candidates has to be settled before applying. Both recruiters take the candidate's name and the father's name from the matriculation certificate. Railway notifications ask for a Gazette notification or other legal document at verification where a name has been formally changed. For a spelling slip, correct the other papers to match class 10.

Many young people in Uttarakhand prepare for the army and the railways, and both recruiters are strict about papers. This page explains name change for railway and army candidates from the state: what each reads, what a mismatch costs, and what to put right before the form or the rally. A name change for railway and army candidates is a matter of timing above all.
We do not deal with recruiters. We prepare the Gazette notification, which railway notifications name for a formally changed name. For recruitment in general, read name mismatch in document verification.
Why Does the Matriculation Certificate Rule?
Both recruiters fix the candidate's identity on the class 10, or matriculation, certificate. It is their proof of the date of birth, and the name on it is the name they record.
- The application is filled in the name on that certificate.
- The father's name, and the mother's name where asked, are taken from it as well.
- Every other paper, identity proof and local certificate is read against it.
- The service record, if the candidate is selected, is opened in that name for a whole career.
So the question for a candidate is never "which of my papers is right". It is "does every paper I hold say what my class 10 certificate says". Where one does not, that paper is corrected, or the difference is covered by a legal document.
What Does Railway Recruitment Ask For?
Railway recruitment boards issue a centralised notice for each recruitment. These points are as guides reproduce the document verification instructions of such notices. Read the notice for your own recruitment.
| Point | What the notice says |
|---|---|
| Proof of date of birth | The matriculation or high school certificate, or its equivalent |
| The names | The candidate's name and the father's or mother's name in the application are verified with reference to the names in that certificate |
| A formal change of name | A Gazette notification, and or any legal document, is to be brought in original at verification |
| Other papers | Qualification, category and other certificates, in original, as the notice lists |
Railway notices have also said, in past recruitments, that a candidate who has formally changed a name should state it in the application, and that the change should have been made, or applied for, before the application was submitted. We could not confirm that wording for the current notice, so check it. The principle is sound for any recruiter: finish the change first, apply afterwards.
What Does an Army Rally Ask For?
Recruitment to the ranks is notified by the army recruiting office for a group of districts, and the notification lists the documents a candidate has to carry. We did not confirm the wording of the current notification for the state, so treat what follows as the general position and read your own notification on the army's recruitment website.
- Education certificates, with the matriculation certificate as proof of age and name.
- A residence or nativity certificate, with a photograph, from the tehsil. A rally is open to candidates of the districts named.
- A caste or class certificate, where the candidate's community is relevant to the category of recruitment.
- A character certificate, recently issued, from the village head or the school.
- Identity papers such as Aadhaar and PAN, and bank details.
- An affidavit by the candidate, in the format the notification gives.
- A relationship certificate, for a son of a serving soldier, an ex-serviceman or a war widow, issued by the record office.
The army checks documents at the rally itself, in a line, in the open, with thousands of candidates. A paper that needs explaining is a paper that may be set aside. Candidates are also warned against altered or tampered documents in the strongest terms.
How Do the Two Compare?
| Point | Railway recruitment | Army rally |
|---|---|---|
| Base paper for the name | Matriculation certificate | Matriculation certificate |
| When papers are checked | At document verification, after the tests | At the rally, and again before despatch for training |
| Time to make good a gap | Sometimes a short period is allowed | Little or none on the ground |
| Local certificates | Category certificate in the central format | Residence, caste and character certificates, with photograph where asked |
| A changed name | Gazette notification or other legal document, as the notice says | Read the notification. Settle it before the rally |
| Father's name | Verified against the matriculation certificate | Checked, and for a serviceman's son matched with the relationship certificate |
The railway process gives a candidate one desk, one officer and a little time. The rally gives none of these. An army candidate's file has to be right before leaving home.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar differs from the class 10 certificate | Correct Aadhaar to the class 10 name | No |
| The residence, caste or character certificate carries a home name or another spelling | A fresh certificate in the class 10 name | No |
| The father's name differs between the class 10 certificate and the local certificates | Fresh local certificates, matching class 10 | No |
| The class 10 certificate itself has a mistake | Apply to the board at once, through the school | Ask the board |
| The class 12 or graduation certificate differs from class 10 | Have the later certificate corrected, or carry an affidavit | If the recruiter asks |
| You have changed your name by choice | Finish the Gazette and update your papers before you apply | Yes |
| A serviceman's son, and the relationship certificate differs | The father applies to his record office to correct the family particulars | Ask the record office |
Five of the seven rows are settled at the tehsil or the Aadhaar centre, at almost no cost. Start there.
How Do You Prepare Before You Apply?
Step 1: Take the class 10 certificate as the measure
Write down your name, your father's name, your mother's name and your date of birth exactly as it prints them.
Step 2: Read the notification's list of documents
For the recruitment or the rally you are aiming at. Note the formats and how recent each certificate has to be.
Step 3: Compare every paper on that list with the class 10 certificate
Letter by letter, for your name and your father's.
Step 4: Correct Aadhaar first
With the class 10 certificate as proof. Other certificates are often issued on Aadhaar.
Step 5: Apply for fresh tehsil certificates in the class 10 name
Residence, caste and any other the notification asks for, in the format it gives.
Step 6: Have later education certificates corrected, where they differ
Through the school or college. Start early, since boards and universities are slow. See name change in education documents.
Step 7: Fill the application in the class 10 name, exactly
Yourself, or reading the preview before it is submitted.
Step 8: Keep one folder, in the notification's order
Originals, attested copies and photographs, ready to carry at a day's notice.
What About the Father's Name, and Sons of Servicemen?
In the hills, a father's name is often written three ways: with a surname on the land record, without one on the school record, and with a rank on army papers. For these recruiters, the class 10 certificate's version is the one that counts.
- Make the residence and caste certificates carry the father's name as on the class 10 certificate.
- Where the father's own Aadhaar differs, he can correct it, and that helps every certificate issued afterwards.
- Where the father has changed his name by Gazette, carry that notification.
A son of a soldier or an ex-serviceman has one more paper. The relationship certificate from the record office names the father as in his service record, and the son as entered in the family particulars there.
- If the son's name or date of birth in those particulars differs from his class 10 certificate, the father applies to his record office, through his unit or the district's soldier welfare office, to have the entry corrected.
- That takes time. Do it a year before the son is of age to apply, not in the month of the rally.
- The record office decides what proof it needs. Ask it.
What About Residence, Caste and Character Certificates?
- Residence. Apply in the name on the class 10 certificate. For the army, the notification's format and the photograph matter. Ask the tehsil for that format.
- Caste or class. A fresh certificate in the class 10 name, with the father's name matching. Railways ask for the central format for backward classes, with a recent date.
- Character. Recently issued, as the notification says, by the authority it names. Give the issuer your class 10 certificate so the name is copied from it.
- All of them. Type or dictate nothing from memory. Hand over the class 10 certificate each time.
See name change in residence certificate and name change in caste certificate.
Why Does Timing Decide It?
| Correction | Rough time |
|---|---|
| A sworn affidavit | A day |
| An Aadhaar update | Some weeks |
| A fresh tehsil certificate | About two to three weeks, as guides report |
| A Gazette notification | Commonly 3 to 7 weeks |
| A board or university correction | Months |
| A correction in a father's service record | Months |
A railway notice may be open for a month. A rally is announced a few weeks ahead. Neither waits. A candidate who starts on the papers when the notice appears can manage the first three rows and none of the others.
There are age limits too. A year lost to a paper is a year off a short window of eligibility. So the time to check a file is at seventeen, with the class 10 certificate fresh in hand.
What Happens After Selection?
- The service record is opened in the name on the matriculation certificate, with the father's name and date of birth from it.
- Police verification is carried out at the home address, in that name.
- Pay, provident fund and later the pension all run on that record.
- A change of name during service is a formal matter, done through the unit or the office with a Gazette notification and an order. It is not done by correcting Aadhaar.
So a name settled before joining saves trouble for decades. See name mismatch in police verification.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Both are central recruiters, so the Gazette of India is the one to use. This route is for a candidate who has changed a name by choice, or whose papers carry two forms that no correction can bring together.
Step 1: Ask yourself if the class 10 name will do
If it will, keep it, and correct the other papers. A candidate who keeps the class 10 name needs no Gazette.
Step 2: Finish before you apply
Count 3 to 7 weeks for the Gazette, and more for Aadhaar after it.
Step 3: Settle who applies
A candidate under 18 applies through the parents. At 18 and over, personally.
Step 4: Fix the exact name, and list the other form as on your certificates
Letter by letter.
Step 5: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper. Keep spare originals of both.
Step 6: Type the form and prepare the CD
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed with two witnesses, the undertaking, the same text on a CD in MS Word, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, with Rs 250 more for each alias. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update your papers and apply
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, then fill the application, stating the change where the form asks.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
For the railways and the army, choose the Gazette of India. A state notice is a state document, and these are central recruiters checking papers from every state.
Step 1: Read the notification for what it names
It may say Gazette notification without saying which.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, PAN and the passport
They follow the Gazette of India most readily.
Step 3: If you still want a state notice, contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted, and how long it takes.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Candidates Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Checking papers after the notice appears | Check them at seventeen |
| Filling the form from Aadhaar | Fill it from the class 10 certificate |
| Carrying an old residence or caste certificate in a home name | Get fresh ones in the class 10 name |
| Ignoring the father's name | Match it on every certificate |
| Changing a name after applying | Finish any change before you apply |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a spelling on a tehsil certificate | A fresh certificate settles it |
| Altering a certificate | Never. It ends the candidature and brings a case |
| Paying an agent at a rally | Recruitment is free. Report it |
| A serviceman's son leaving the family particulars uncorrected | The father applies to the record office, early |
A typical case we handle: a young man from Chamoli, preparing for a rally, had "Singh" after his name on his class 10 certificate and "Singh Negi" on his Aadhaar and his residence certificate. His family asked us for a Gazette to add the surname. We told him it was not the way. He would have applied in a name his class 10 certificate did not carry. He corrected Aadhaar to the class 10 name, took fresh certificates from the tehsil, and went to the rally with one name on every paper. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
If you are keeping the name on your class 10 certificate, you need the Aadhaar centre and the tehsil, and nothing from us. We are useful only where you have in fact changed your name, and need a Gazette notification complete before you apply.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Your certificates come from the tehsil for your home address. The Gazette file, where one is needed, is prepared on WhatsApp, so a candidate in the hills need not travel.
People Also Ask About Names in Railway and Army Recruitment
Which name should I fill in a railway or army application?
The name on your matriculation certificate, exactly.
My Aadhaar name differs from my 10th certificate. Will I be rejected?
It will be questioned. Correct Aadhaar to the class 10 name before you apply.
Is a gazette needed for a name mismatch in railway recruitment?
Railway notices ask for a Gazette notification or other legal document for a formal change of name.
Can I change my name after applying?
Do not. Finish any change before the application.
My father's name is spelt differently on my certificates. Does it matter?
Yes. It is verified against the matriculation certificate.
Can I get a gazette before a rally next month?
It commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. Start well before a rally is announced.
Do RRB applicants have to verify Aadhaar?
Railway recruitment boards have asked candidates to authenticate their identity through Aadhaar while applying. It makes entry to the exam centre easier, and the check is against the name on Aadhaar, so Aadhaar should match your class 10 certificate first.
Can I verify Aadhaar after submitting my RRB application?
Yes. Candidates who applied with another identity document can log in at rrbapply.gov.in and complete Aadhaar verification. It is a one-time process valid for current and future applications.
What should I do with Aadhaar before an RRB exam?
An RRB notice of April 2025 advised candidates to keep their Aadhaar unlocked in the UIDAI system before coming to the exam centre, including those who verified it at the application stage.
What if I did not give Aadhaar details when applying to RRB?
Carry the original Aadhaar card or a verified copy of e-Aadhaar to the exam, as the RRB notice says. The name on it should be the same as on your class 10 certificate.
Does RRB keep or share my Aadhaar data?
As reported, the boards have said they will neither save nor share Aadhaar details with any third party, nor use them for anything other than the notice concerned.
My Aadhaar has my full name and my 10th certificate has initials. What do I do?
Guides commonly suggest carrying a notarised affidavit that both names are yours. The safer course is to bring Aadhaar to the class 10 form, or have the board record the full name, before you apply.
Have Your Papers Checked Before You Apply
Send photos of the class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and the tehsil certificates. We will list, free, each difference and where it is corrected. For most candidates there is nothing to pay us for, and we will say so.

The notification for your own recruitment is the authority.

Railway and Army Candidates: The Short Version
Both recruiters take your name and your father's name from the matriculation certificate. So bring every other paper to it: Aadhaar at the centre, residence and caste certificates at the tehsil. Railway notices ask for a Gazette notification or other legal document where a name has been formally changed, and any change should be complete before you apply.
Check your papers a year ahead, not when the notice appears. To have them checked, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
