Flight Ticket Name Mismatch With ID Proof in Uttarakhand
When the name on your air ticket does not match your identity proof or passport: what the airline can correct, the 24 hour rule, and what to do when it is your own papers that disagree.
A flight ticket name mismatch is corrected by the airline, not by any Government office. Contact it at once. Under the aviation regulator's rules, a correction for the same person is free within 24 hours of booking on the airline's own website. The ticket must match the identity proof you will carry, and for travel abroad, your passport.

A flight ticket name mismatch is usually a typing slip made in a hurry, and it is usually easy to put right if you act the same day. This page explains flight ticket name mismatch for travellers from Uttarakhand: what an airline will correct, what it will not, and what to do when the real problem is that your own identity papers disagree.
We do not book or change tickets, and a ticket needs no Gazette. We prepare Gazette papers for names. If your identity papers are in two names, that is where we may be of use.
What Is the One Rule About Names on Tickets?
The name on the ticket must be the name on the identity document you show at the airport. For a flight inside India that is a photo identity proof. For a flight abroad it is your passport, and nothing else.
- An air ticket is issued to a named person and cannot be passed to someone else.
- Security staff at the terminal gate compare the ticket with your identity proof.
- The airline compares them again at check-in and at boarding.
- For travel abroad, immigration and the airline at the other end read the passport against the booking.
So the question is never "what is my real name". It is "what does the paper I will carry say". Book in that name, letter for letter.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
| The mismatch | Example | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| A typing slip | Bisht booked as Bihst | A correction by the airline |
| First and last names swapped | Rawat Suresh for Suresh Rawat | A correction by the airline |
| A short form or a pet name | Raju booked for Rajesh | A correction, if the airline accepts it as the same person |
| A maiden name on one, a married name on the other | Ticket in the married surname, identity proof in the maiden name | Carry an identity proof in the ticket name, or have the ticket corrected |
| A middle name missing | Harish Joshi for Harish Chandra Joshi | Ask the airline. Often accepted for domestic travel, not to be risked abroad |
| Booked for the wrong person | A brother's name in place of yours | Not a correction. A new ticket |
| Your own papers are in two names | Aadhaar in a new name, passport in the old | Book in the name on the paper you will carry |
The first five are for the airline. The sixth is not possible. The seventh is not a ticket problem at all, and it is dealt with further down.
Why Are a Correction and a Change Different?
| Point | Name correction | Name change |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Putting right an error in the name of the same passenger | Putting a different person on the ticket |
| Allowed? | Yes, as the airline's policy sets out | No. A ticket is not transferable |
| Proof asked for | Your identity proof, to show it is the same person | Not applicable |
| Cost | Free in the 24 hour window. A fee afterwards, as the airline sets | A new ticket |
Airlines look at how much of the name is being altered. A letter or two is plainly a correction. Where the whole name is different, the airline may treat the request as an attempt to transfer the ticket and refuse it. When you call, say clearly that it is the same passenger and offer your identity proof.
A person who has legally changed a name, by marriage or by Gazette, is still the same passenger. Airlines usually deal with that as a correction on proof. Ask the airline which paper it wants.
How Do You Get a Ticket Corrected?
Step 1: Check the ticket the moment it arrives
Read every passenger's name against the identity proof each will carry.
Step 2: Note the time of booking
If you booked on the airline's own website, the first 24 hours matter.
Step 3: Contact whoever sold you the ticket
The airline, if you booked with it directly. The travel agent or the booking website, if you booked through one.
Step 4: Ask for a name correction for the same passenger
Give the booking reference and the name exactly as it should read.
Step 5: Send the identity proof they ask for
The passport for an international booking. A photo identity proof for a domestic one.
Step 6: Get the corrected ticket in writing
A fresh itinerary by email, with the right name. Do not rely on a remark made over the phone.
Step 7: Check connecting flights and the return
Each part of the trip, and each airline on it, has to carry the corrected name.
Do not leave it for the airport. Staff at the counter may be able to help on the day, but they are not bound to, and the flight will not wait.
What Is the 24 Hour Rule?
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation revised its rules on tickets in February 2026. As reported, they say this about names.
- An airline is not to levy any additional charge for a correction in the name of the same person, where the passenger points out the error within 24 hours of booking.
- This applies where the ticket was booked directly through the airline's website.
- The same rules give a 48 hour window to cancel or change a booking without extra charge, for flights far enough ahead, with conditions.
| Your booking | Position |
|---|---|
| On the airline's own website, error reported within 24 hours | No additional charge for the correction, under the rule as reported |
| On the airline's own website, reported later | The airline's own policy and fee apply |
| Through a travel agent or a booking portal | The rule as reported speaks of direct bookings. Ask the agent and the airline at once |
So the habit that saves money is simple. Read the ticket the minute it arrives, and if a letter is wrong, report it the same day.
What Applies on a Domestic Flight?
From Dehradun, Pantnagar or any other airport, a domestic passenger shows a valid photo identity proof at the terminal gate and again at check-in. Aadhaar, a passport, a voter card, a PAN card and a driving licence are among those commonly accepted. The airline's website lists what it takes.
- Carry the identity proof whose name matches the ticket. If you hold two papers in two forms of your name, choose one and book in it.
- A small difference, such as a missing middle name, is often let through on a domestic flight. It is at the discretion of the staff, so do not count on it.
- Digital entry systems at airports compare your booking with your identity record by machine. Where the names differ, the machine may not let you through, and you use the regular gate with your papers.
- For a child, ask the airline what proof of age or identity it wants, and book the child's name as on that paper.
Where a woman's ticket is in her married name and her identity proof is in her maiden name, the simplest course is to carry an identity proof in the ticket name. A marriage certificate may help explain the difference, but staff are not bound to accept it.
What Applies on an International Flight?
The ticket must match the passport exactly. Here a small difference is not small.
- Type the given name and the surname as the passport has them, in the boxes the booking form gives.
- Do not add or drop a middle name to make the ticket look like another paper.
- The visa, the ticket and the passport must all carry the same name.
- Passenger details are sent to the destination country before the flight. A mismatch can stop you at check-in, in transit or on arrival.
- On a trip with two airlines, each has to carry the same name. Correct both.
To correct the passport, see name change in passport in Uttarakhand.
What About Single Names, Initials and Titles?
A single name
Booking forms ask for a first name and a last name. If your passport has only one name, each airline has its own way of entering it. Ask the airline before you book, and follow what it says.
Initials and short forms
Write names in full, as the identity proof has them. If the proof itself has an initial or a short form such as Md, enter what the proof says.
Titles
Mr, Ms or Mrs is chosen from a list and is not part of the name. A wrong title is rarely a problem, but ask the airline to correct it if the gender is shown wrongly.
If a single name or a short form keeps causing trouble at booking, that is a sign the identity paper needs attention, not the ticket. See adding a surname to a single name and short name and full name difference.
What If You Are in the Middle of a Change of Name?
After a marriage or a Gazette notification, there is a stretch of weeks or months when some of your papers carry the new name and some the old. Tickets booked in that stretch are where people get caught.
- Decide which paper you will travel on, and book in the name on it.
- For a domestic flight, that can be any accepted identity proof. If your Aadhaar already has the new name, you may book in the new name and carry Aadhaar.
- For an international flight, it is the passport. If the passport still has the old name, book in the old name.
- A ticket already booked in the old name is still good, as long as you carry a paper in the old name.
- Carry the linking paper as well: the marriage certificate or a printed copy of the Gazette. It may help if a question is asked. It does not replace an identity proof.
The safest plan is to finish a booked trip before the passport is reissued, or to wait until the new passport and any visa are ready before you book the next one.
What If It Is Your Own Papers That Disagree?
Sometimes the ticket is correct and the trouble is underneath it. Your Aadhaar says one thing, your passport another, and every booking forces you to pick a side.
| What you find | Where it is settled |
|---|---|
| A spelling differs between Aadhaar and passport | Correct the odd one at its own office |
| Initials on one, the full name on the other | Expand the short record |
| The surname is missing on the passport | A passport re-issue, after your other papers carry the surname |
| A married name on some papers and a maiden name on others | Bring them to one form, with the marriage certificate |
| Two forms in use for years, and no paper settles it | A Gazette notification with an alias |
Fix this once, between trips, and the ticket problem stops coming back. See name spelling correction in Uttarakhand and name change in Aadhaar card.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
This is not for a ticket. It is for the underlying case where your identity papers are in two names, or you are taking a new name. Do it between trips.
Step 1: Make sure no trip is booked in the coming weeks
Or plan to travel on your existing papers until the change is complete.
Step 2: Fix the one name you will use
As it will stand in the passport: given name and surname. List the other forms now in use.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the forms in use and the one you will use from now on. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, with Rs 250 more for each alias. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update your papers in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, then PAN, then the passport. Book travel in the new name only after that.
Can the Uttarakhand Gazette Be Used?
For papers that end in a passport and travel abroad, the Gazette of India is the safer choice. The state route is set out here for completeness.
Step 1: Ask which offices will read the notification
Aadhaar, PAN and the passport office each have their own list.
Step 2: Choose the Gazette of India if you travel abroad
It is accepted across the country.
Step 3: If a state notice will do, contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Travellers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not reading the ticket until the day of travel | Read it the minute it arrives |
| Missing the 24 hour window | Report an error the same day |
| Booking in the name you prefer, not the name on your identity proof | Book in the name on the paper you will carry |
| Booking an international ticket in a name the passport does not have | Follow the passport, letter for letter |
| Asking for a "name change" when you mean a correction | Say it is the same passenger, and offer proof |
| Correcting one airline on a two-airline trip | Correct every part of the booking |
| Relying on a remark over the phone | Get the corrected itinerary by email |
| Carrying an affidavit as identity proof | An affidavit is not an identity proof |
| Reissuing a passport with a trip already booked | Travel first, or change the booking and the visa too |
A typical case we handle: a newly married woman in Dehradun had her honeymoon tickets booked by her husband in her married surname, while her passport still carried her maiden name. She called us for a Gazette a week before the flight. A Gazette would not have helped, and there was no time for a new passport. We told her to ask the airline to correct the ticket to the passport name, which it did on seeing the passport. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
