Gazette Corrigendum for a Wrong Name Change Notification in Uttarakhand

What to do when your published Gazette has a mistake: when a correction is possible, who pays, the time limit and how to apply.

Quick answer

A gazette corrigendum is a short correction notice printed in a later issue when your name change notification has a mistake. Apply to the Department of Publication within six months of publication, with the published copy and a photocopy of what you first sent. It is free only if the press made the error.

A corrigendum corrects a mistake in a published Gazette notice. Apply within six months; it is free only if the press erred, otherwise the fee is paid again.

A gazette corrigendum is the only way to correct a mistake in a published name change notice, because a Gazette cannot be withdrawn or reprinted. This page explains when a gazette corrigendum is needed, who pays for it, the six-month limit and the papers to send, for people who filed from Uttarakhand.

If your file was returned before printing, you do not need a corrigendum. Read gazette name change rejection reasons. For the whole Gazette step, see gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

What Is a Gazette Corrigendum?

A corrigendum is a printed correction. In the Gazette, it is a short notice in a later issue that says an earlier notice had an error, and gives the right reading.

It exists because a Gazette, once published, is a permanent public record. Nobody can take your notice out, edit the PDF or print the issue again. The only way to set a mistake right is to publish a second notice that corrects the first.

  • The first notice stays where it is, with its mistake.
  • The corrigendum appears in a new issue, with its own date and page number.
  • From then on, the two are read together.

So after a corrigendum you hold two Gazette pages, not one. Offices will want to see both.

When Do You Need a Corrigendum, and When Do You Not?

You need a corrigendum when

  • Your old name or new name is printed with a wrong letter
  • Your father's or husband's name is printed wrongly
  • "Son of", "daughter of" or "wife of" is wrong
  • The address or pin code is printed wrongly
  • For a child, the parent's name or the child's age is wrong
  • Part of the notice is missing in print

You do not need one when

  • Your file was returned before printing. Correct the paper and send it again
  • The notice is right, and another record such as Aadhaar is wrong. Correct that record
  • You now want a different name. That is a fresh name change, not a correction
  • You want to add a second name that was never in your file
  • The PDF shows a signature message. That is your PDF reader, not an error

A corrigendum corrects what was printed. It does not change what you asked for. If the Gazette printed exactly what your form said and you have since changed your mind, the route is a new name change with a new affidavit, a new newspaper notice and a new fee.

Whose Mistake Was It, and Who Pays for the Correction?

This one question decides the cost. Answer it with your scan of the file you sent.

Who pays for a Gazette corrigendum, by whose mistake it was
What your scan showsWhose mistakeWhat you pay
Your form and soft copy were right, and the print is wrongThe pressNothing for the correction
Your form or soft copy had the same mistake as the printYoursThe Government fee again
Your form and your soft copy differed from each otherYoursThe Government fee again
You have no copy of what you sentIt cannot be shownBe ready to pay the fee

The last row is the reason we tell every client to scan the whole file before posting. Without a copy of your submission, you cannot show that the error was not yours.

How to compare

  1. Open the published notice and your scan of the typed form side by side.
  2. Read the old name, the new name, the father's or husband's name and the address, one letter at a time.
  3. Check the soft copy you sent, if you kept the file.
  4. Mark exactly where the print differs from your form.
Be honest about what you find. If the mistake was in your form, say so in your application and pay the fee. A claim that the press erred, when your own form shows the same error, only adds weeks.

What Is the Six-Month Limit for a Corrigendum?

A corrigendum has to be applied for within six months of the date of publication. The date that counts is the date printed on the issue that carries your notice, not the day you downloaded it and not the day you noticed the mistake.

  • Read your notice the day you download it. Most people find an error only when a bank or a passport office points it out, months later.
  • Write the publication date on your folder, and the date six months after it.
  • Do not wait until the last month. Allow time for the post from your district.
Ask a second person to read the notice. You know what your name should say, and your eye reads it that way. Someone else will see what is printed.

Which Papers Do You Send for a Corrigendum?

Papers to send with a Gazette corrigendum application
PaperWhat it shows
An application to the Controller of PublicationsWhat is wrong in the print, and the correct reading
The published copyThe first page of the issue and the page with your notice, with the error marked
A photocopy of your original submissionThe form as you sent it, so the office can see where the error began
Self-attested identity proofWho you are, and the right spelling where it helps
The fee receipt, where the mistake was yoursThat the fee for the correction is paid
Your first fee reference and delivery proofWhich file the office should look up

The office may ask for more, such as a typed correction text or a soft copy. Before you post, read the current guidelines on deptpub.gov.in, or write to the Department and ask what it wants for a corrigendum.

Keep a scan of this second file as well. Papers sent to the Gazette office are not returned.

How Do You Apply for a Central Gazette Corrigendum?

Step 1: Find the exact error

Compare the published notice with your scan of the form and mark each difference.

Step 2: Work out whose mistake it was

If your form was right, the press erred. If your form had the mistake, it was yours.

Step 3: Check the date

Confirm you are within six months of the publication date printed on the issue.

Step 4: Write the application

Give the date of the issue, the page number, the words as printed and the words as they should read.

Step 5: Pay the fee if the mistake was yours

Pay on BharatKosh and print the receipt. If the press erred, say so in the letter and attach your proof.

Step 6: Attach the papers and post the file

Send it by Speed Post to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and keep the receipt.

Step 7: Watch Part IV for the correction

Check the weekly Gazette on egazette.gov.in until the corrigendum appears, then download that issue too.

The application goes in from you, in person or by post, as the first file did. An agent cannot submit it in your place.

How Does a Corrigendum Read?

A corrigendum is brief. It points to the earlier notice and gives the right reading. This sample shows the idea. The names and dates are made up, and the office uses its own wording.

In the change of name notice of Suresh Singh Rawat published in the Gazette of India, Part IV, dated [date], at page [number], the new name printed as "SURESH RAWT" may be read as "SURESH RAWAT".

What to write in your application

  • Printed as: the wrong words, copied exactly from the Gazette.
  • To be read as: the right words, exactly as in your affidavit.
  • Where: the date of the issue and the page number.

Ask for only the correction that is needed. Do not use the application to tidy up other things, such as adding a middle name. That is a new name change, and mixing the two gets the application returned.

What Does a Corrigendum Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

Cost and time of a Gazette corrigendum
ItemPress made the errorYou made the error
Government feeNoneThe fee again. Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor
Photocopies, printing and postageA small amountA small amount
New affidavit or newspaper noticeNot usuallyOnly if the office asks, for example where the error began in those papers
TimeExpect a wait of several weeks, like the first notice

The Government fee is revised each financial year, so confirm the amount for a corrigendum on the day you pay. It is not refunded.

Our own charge for preparing a corrigendum file is separate and quoted per case.

What If More Than Six Months Have Passed?

Then a corrigendum may no longer be open to you. Do not assume either way. Write to the Department of Publication with the date of your issue, the page number and the error, and ask what can be done.

If the office says a corrigendum is not possible, the usual way forward is a fresh change of name notice that takes you from the name as wrongly printed to the name you want. That means a new affidavit, a new newspaper notice and the fee, like any other name change.

  • Keep the first Gazette. You will need to show the chain from your original name to the final one.
  • In the new affidavit, state the facts plainly: what was printed, and what the correct name is.
  • Ask us to look at the papers before you start, because the wording of the new notice matters.

What If You Already Updated Aadhaar or Other Records?

It depends on which spelling those records now carry.

What to do about records already updated when the Gazette has an error
Your records showWhat to do
Nothing updated yetStop. Get the corrigendum first, then update Aadhaar, PAN, bank and passport in that order
The correct spelling, though the Gazette is wrongStill get the corrigendum, so your proof matches your records
The wrong spelling, copied from the GazetteGet the corrigendum, then correct each record with both Gazette pages
Be careful with Aadhaar. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime. Do not use an attempt on a spelling that is still wrong in your Gazette. Wait for the corrigendum.

A typical case we handle: a woman in Haldwani found, at her bank, that her new surname was printed in the Gazette with one letter missing. Four months had passed. Her scan showed the form was typed correctly, so the error was the press's. She applied with the published page and a copy of her form, and the correction appeared in a later issue with no fee. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

How Do You Correct a Mistake in an Uttarakhand Gazette Notice?

If your notice was printed by the Government Press at Roorkee, the Delhi rules above do not apply as they stand. The press has its own practice.

Step 1: Download the state issue and mark the error

Take the PDF from gazettes.uk.gov.in and note the Bhag, the date and the page number.

Step 2: Compare it with what you submitted

Use your photocopy of the notice you gave the press.

Step 3: Contact the press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in. Ask how a correction is made, the time limit and the fee, if any.

Step 4: Apply as the press directs

Send the application with the printed page, your submission copy and identity proof.

Step 5: Download the correction when it is printed

Keep both state issues together.

If your state notice is also being questioned outside Uttarakhand, it may be wiser to file the Gazette of India with the right spelling. Read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India before you decide.

How Do You Use the Corrected Gazette?

  • Download both issues: the one with your first notice and the one with the corrigendum.
  • Print the first page and your page from each. That is four pages in a set.
  • Always give the two together. The corrigendum makes sense only next to the notice it corrects.
  • Note both dates and both page numbers on your folder.
  • Then update Aadhaar first, followed by PAN, the bank and the passport.

The steps to download are on our download the gazette name change copy page.

How Do You Make Sure You Never Need a Corrigendum?

  1. Decide the exact spelling, spacing and initials before the affidavit is typed.
  2. Type the name once and copy it into every paper. Do not retype it.
  3. Make the soft copy from the same file as the printed form.
  4. Have a second person read the form against the affidavit.
  5. Scan the whole file before you post it.
  6. Read the published notice on the day you download it.

Steps 1 to 4 prevent your own mistakes. Step 5 protects you if the press makes one. Step 6 keeps you inside the six months.

When you do not need us

If the error is the press's and you have your scan, the application is one letter and a few photocopies. You can send it yourself. Call us when you have no copy of your submission, when the six months are nearly over, or when records have already been updated in the wrong spelling. Our charge is quoted per case and shown apart from the Government fee.
