Name Change in Demat and Mutual Fund Accounts in Uttarakhand
For investors whose name on a demat account or a mutual fund folio does not match PAN: where the request goes, what proof is asked for a married name and for any other change, and why the linked bank account has to follow.
A name change in demat and mutual fund accounts starts with PAN. Update PAN, then give your broker and each fund house a modification request with the updated PAN and the proof. As brokers' guides put it, a marriage certificate serves for a married name, and any other change needs the name change as published in the official Gazette.

Investments are held by PAN, and a name change in demat and mutual fund accounts follows it. This page explains name change in demat and mutual fund accounts for investors in Uttarakhand: the order of work, the proof each kind of change needs, and the linked records that have to move together.
We do not deal with brokers or fund houses. We prepare the Gazette notification, which this subject asks for more plainly than most. The proof described is as brokers and fund houses publish it. For old paper shares, read share certificate name change and correction.
What Are the Accounts, and Who Keeps Each?
| Account | What it holds | Who you deal with | Who keeps the record behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demat account | Shares, bonds and other securities in electronic form | Your depository participant, usually your broker or bank | One of the two depositories |
| Trading account | Buying and selling | Your broker | The broker and the exchanges |
| Mutual fund folio | Units of a fund house's schemes | The fund house, or its registrar | The fund's registrar and transfer agent |
| The investor's identity record | Name, PAN, address and photograph, shared across the market | Whichever of the above you update it through | The registration agencies for investor identity |
An investor never deals with a depository or a registration agency directly. The broker, the bank or the fund house takes the request and passes it on. That is why the same change may have to be asked for in more than one place.
Why Does PAN Come First?
- Every investment account is opened on PAN, and the holder's name is checked against the PAN database.
- A request to change a name to something PAN does not show is returned.
- So the sequence is fixed: the paper recording the change, then Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then the investments.
- The PAN number does not change. Holdings, purchase history and tax records stay attached to it.
- Once PAN and the investor's identity record carry the new name, most intermediaries update with little further question.
What Proof Is Asked For?
These are as brokers and fund houses set them out in their own guides. They are consistent with each other, which suggests a common rule behind them. We did not read the depositories' own circulars.
| Reason for the change | Proof listed |
|---|---|
| Marriage or divorce | The marriage certificate or divorce decree. Guides also list a passport showing the husband's name, or the name change as published in the official Gazette |
| Any other reason | A copy of the name change as published in the official Gazette |
| A change in the father's name | A copy of the father's name change as published in the official Gazette |
| With every request | The account modification form, and a self-attested copy of the PAN card in the new name |
- Several guides ask for the copy of the marriage certificate or the Gazette to be notarised. Ask your own broker.
- For mutual funds, a fund house's guide lists a name change request form with a marriage certificate, a Gazette notification or a court order, and an identity update where required.
- A plain spelling correction to match PAN is usually done on identity proof alone.
The middle row is the one to note. Outside marriage, the investment world asks for a Gazette by name. An affidavit alone is not what these guides list.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The account misspells you, and PAN is right | A correction at the broker or fund house, on PAN | No |
| PAN is the wrong one | Correct PAN first, then the accounts | No |
| You married and took a new surname | PAN on the marriage certificate, then the accounts with the certificate | No |
| You returned to a maiden name after divorce | PAN, then the accounts with the decree | Sometimes |
| You changed your name by choice | Gazette, then PAN, then the accounts | Yes |
| Your father's name is recorded wrongly or has changed | The guides list a Gazette for a changed father's name | Often |
| The holder has died | Transmission to the nominee or heirs. Not a change of name | No |
Row five is the plain case for our service. Rows one to three need nothing from us.
What Is the Order of Work?
Step 1: Get the paper that records the change
The marriage certificate, the divorce decree, or the Gazette notification.
Step 2: Update Aadhaar, then PAN
Wait for the new PAN card. Everything after this rests on it.
Step 3: Update the bank account linked to your investments
Payouts and redemptions go there, and its name is matched.
Step 4: List every account
Each demat and trading account, and every fund house you hold units with. A consolidated statement from the depository helps.
Step 5: Give your broker the account modification form
With the self-attested new PAN card and the proof, attested as the broker asks.
Step 6: Give each fund house, or its registrar, the name change request
With the same proof, and an identity update form where asked.
Step 7: Update the nominee and joint holder details if they have changed too
On the same visit.
Step 8: Check the next statement
The consolidated account statement should show the new name on every holding.
What Happens in the Demat and Trading Account?
- The request goes to your depository participant on its account modification form. The participant verifies and updates the depository.
- The demat account number and the trading client code stay the same, as guides note.
- Holdings are untouched. Nothing is sold, transferred or re-bought.
- Dividends and bonus shares follow the name and bank account in the depository's record. A stale name is how dividends go astray.
- Some brokers take the request online with an electronic signature. Others ask for paper and a visit or a courier.
- Where you hold accounts with two brokers, each has to be asked.
Do it when you are not about to sell. A request in progress can hold up a transaction for a few days.
What About Mutual Fund Folios?
- Units bought through a demat account follow the demat account. Units held directly with a fund house are in a folio, and each fund house keeps its own.
- A name change request goes to the fund house or its registrar, on its form, with the proof.
- The investor's identity record is updated first or along with it. Once that carries the new name, fund houses can draw on it.
- A running instalment plan continues. Check that the bank mandate behind it is in the new name, or the debit may fail.
- Units in tax-saving schemes stay locked for their period. The name is updated all the same.
- An investor with folios at several fund houses should ask each, and then read the consolidated statement.
Why Does the Linked Bank Account Matter?
- Every investment account is tied to a bank account in the same holder's name. Sale proceeds, dividends and redemptions are paid only there.
- The bank account's name is checked against the investment account's. A difference can return a payout.
- The bank changes a name on a marriage certificate or a Gazette notification, under the Reserve Bank's rule on identity papers.
- Update the bank before the broker and the fund houses, and give them a cancelled cheque or statement in the new name if they ask.
What About Joint Holders and Nominees?
Joint holders
- Each holder's name is that holder's own. The request is made for the one whose name has changed
- All holders usually sign the modification form
- The order of the names matters. A demat account and a share certificate have to carry the holders in the same order
- Adding or removing a holder is not a change of name. It is a different request, and often a new account
Nominees
- A nominee is named by the holder and can be changed by the holder at any time
- A wife who has changed her surname should be re-entered in her present name
- The nominee's name should match the nominee's own identity proof, since that is what is read at a claim
- Check the nomination on every folio and every account
What About a Father's or Husband's Name?
- An investor's identity record carries a father's or spouse's name as well.
- Brokers' guides list a Gazette for a change in the father's name. That means a real change, published by the father, not a spelling.
- A misspelling of the father's name against the investor's PAN record is a correction on PAN.
- Where the father himself has two forms of his name on his own papers, the cure is his own Gazette notice or correction, while he is living.
- A married woman may choose her husband's or her father's name for this field. Use the one on PAN.
What Happens When a Holder Dies?
- Holdings pass by transmission: to the surviving joint holder, or the nominee, or failing both the legal heirs.
- The claimant applies to the depository participant and each fund house with the death certificate and the claimant's own identity papers.
- The dead holder's name in the account is compared with the death certificate, and the claimant's name with the nomination.
- A difference in the dead holder's name is explained by his PAN and other papers. It cannot be cured by a Gazette.
- A claimant who has changed a name since being nominated gives the marriage certificate or a Gazette notification for the claimant's own name.
Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this where you have changed your name for a reason other than marriage. PAN asks for it, and brokers' guides list it by name. The market is national, so the Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a spelling against PAN
A spelling is corrected on identity proof.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on PAN and so on every account.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, PAN and the bank, then the broker and each fund house.
Print several clear copies. Each intermediary keeps one, and some ask for it notarised. See gazette name change in Uttarakhand.
Would a Broker Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
The guides say "official Gazette" without saying which. A broker's or a registrar's back office is usually in another state, and knows the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Ask your broker and one fund house which Gazette they accept
In writing, before you choose.
Step 2: Think about PAN
PAN comes first, and it is a central record.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Investors Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Asking the broker before PAN is updated | PAN first, always |
| Offering an affidavit for a changed name | The guides list the Gazette publication |
| Opening a new account in the new name | Modify the existing one. Holdings and history stay |
| Applying for a second PAN | Never. Correct the one you have |
| Updating the broker and forgetting the fund houses | List every account and folio |
| Leaving the bank account in the old name | Update it first, or payouts return |
| Forgetting the nominee's changed name | Re-enter the nomination |
| Doing it in the week of a sale | Do it when no transaction is pending |
| Treating a dead holder's account as a name change | That is transmission |
A typical case we handle: a schoolteacher in Dehradun had changed her first name by choice years earlier and used the new one everywhere except her PAN and investments. Her broker returned her request with a note asking for the name change as published in the official Gazette. We prepared the Gazette of India notice. She updated Aadhaar and PAN, then her bank, and then gave her broker and three fund houses the same set of papers. Her next consolidated statement showed one name throughout. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling against PAN, and for a married surname, which rests on the marriage certificate. We are useful where you have changed your name for any other reason, since PAN and the brokers' guides both ask for a Gazette.

The proof for each kind of change is as several brokers and a fund house set it out in their own guides. We did not read the depositories' or the regulator's own circulars on a change of name in a demat account. The notes on the order of work, joint holders, nominees and transmission are general guidance. Your own broker and fund house are the authority. This is not investment advice.
