How to Check Gazette Name Change Status From Uttarakhand
Where to look at each stage after you post the file, how long each stage takes, and what to do if nothing appears.
To check gazette name change status from Uttarakhand, first confirm delivery with your Speed Post tracking number. Then open egazette.gov.in each week and look for your name in Part IV of the weekly Gazette of India. A complete file is commonly published 30 to 45 days after it reaches Delhi.

After the file is posted, the waiting begins, and most people do not know where to look. This page explains how to check gazette name change status at each stage: in the post, at the office and in print. It also covers what to do when your gazette name change status shows nothing after two months.
If you have not posted your file yet, start with how to send the gazette file from Uttarakhand to Delhi. For the whole Gazette step, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.
What Are the Stages of a Gazette Name Change File?
Your file is always in one of three places. Each has its own way of checking.
In the post
From the counter in your town to the office in Delhi. You check this with the tracking number on your receipt.
At the office
The Department of Publication checks the papers and sends the notice for printing. This is the quiet stage. There is little to see from outside.
In print
The notice appears in Part IV of the weekly Gazette of India. You check this on egazette.gov.in.
Most worry comes from stage 2, because nothing seems to happen. That is normal. For a complete file, the usual wait from delivery to print is 30 to 45 days.
Is There an Online Status Tracker for Gazette Name Change?
We know of no public page where you type a number and see the status of a name change file at the Department of Publication. If the Department adds one, it will be on its own website, deptpub.gov.in. Do not trust a "status check" page on any other site.
What you can check yourself, free, is this:
| What you want to know | Where to check | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Has the file reached Delhi? | India Post or courier tracking page | Consignment number |
| Did my fee go through? | BharatKosh, track payment option | Transaction reference number |
| Has my notice been printed? | egazette.gov.in, weekly Gazette, Part IV | Your old or new name |
| Is there a problem with my file? | The Department of Publication, by letter or its listed contact | Delivery proof and fee reference |
So "status" in practice means two checks: delivered, and published. Everything between them is waiting.
What Should You Keep Ready to Check the Status?
- The Speed Post or courier receipt, with the consignment number
- The date the tracking page showed "delivered", with a screenshot
- The BharatKosh receipt, with the transaction reference number
- Your old name and new name, spelt exactly as in your form
- The scan of your whole file
Write the delivery date on the first page of your own copy. Every count of days starts from that date, not from the day you posted the envelope and not from the day you paid the fee.
How Do You Check the Central Gazette Status, Step by Step?
Step 1: Confirm delivery
Enter your consignment number on the India Post or courier website. Save the page when it shows delivered.
Step 2: Count from the delivery date
Mark the date 30 days after delivery on your calendar. Start looking a little before that.
Step 3: Open egazette.gov.in
Go to the search for published Gazettes and choose the weekly Gazette.
Step 4: Choose Part IV and the dates
Select Part IV, and a date range that starts a week or two after your delivery date.
Step 5: Open each issue and search for your name
Open the PDF of each weekly issue and search for your old name, then your new name.
Step 6: Repeat every week
Part IV is published weekly, on a Saturday. Check the new issue early the next week until your notice appears.
Step 7: Save the issue when you find it
Download the PDF and note the date of the issue and the page number.
How Do You Find Your Name Inside the Gazette PDF?
A weekly Part IV issue is long. It carries name change notices from all over India, one after another. Your notice is four or five lines somewhere inside it.
- Use the search box of the PDF reader. On a computer, press Ctrl and F. On a phone, use the find option of the PDF app.
- Search one word at a time. Try your surname first, then your first name. A full name with spaces may not match.
- Search the old name and the new name. Both appear in the notice.
- Try your town. Searching "Haldwani" or "Rudraprayag" brings up far fewer results than a common surname like Rawat or Negi.
- If search finds nothing in any issue, the PDF may be a scanned image. Read through the pages, or open it on a computer where the text is easier to scan by eye.
- An issue may be split into more than one file. Open every file listed for that week.
Week by Week: What Should You Expect?
| Time after posting | What is happening | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| First few days | The envelope is on its way to Delhi | Track it until delivered. Save the proof |
| Weeks 1 to 3 after delivery | The office checks the file | Wait. Keep your phone and post reachable |
| Weeks 4 to 7 after delivery | Most complete files are printed in this window | Check Part IV once a week |
| Week 8 and after | Later than usual | Check the last few issues again, then write to the Department |
From the hill districts, the first row is longer. A file from Munsiyari or Joshimath can spend a week on the road, more in the monsoon. That time is not counted in the 30 to 45 days.
If you have a date to meet, such as a passport appointment, an exam form or a joining date, do not fix it on the 30th day. Leave a margin of two or three weeks.
Why Does a Gazette Name Change Get Delayed?
Reasons in your file
- A paper is missing
- The spelling differs between two papers
- The fee is short, or paid under the wrong purpose
- The soft copy does not match the form
- A cutting was sent in place of the full newspaper page
- A supporting paper is older than one year
Reasons outside your file
- More files than usual at the office
- Public holidays in that month
- The start of a financial year, when fees and work both change
- The envelope reached later than you think
- Your notice is printed, but you searched the wrong spelling or the wrong week
The last line is more common than people expect. Before you decide a file is stuck, search the issues again with the surname alone and with your town.
What Should You Do If There Is No Notice After Two Months?
- Search again, properly. Open every Part IV issue from two weeks after delivery to today. Search the old name, the new name and your town.
- Check your delivery proof. Confirm the envelope was delivered, and on which date.
- Write to the Department of Publication. A short letter or email with your old name, new name, date of delivery, consignment number and BharatKosh reference number. Take the current contact from deptpub.gov.in.
- Attach proof. The delivery screenshot and the fee receipt.
- Wait for a reply, then follow up once. Keep copies of what you send.
- If there is still no answer, you may lodge a grievance on the Central Government's public grievance portal, pgportal.gov.in, against the Department.
Do not send a second full file while the first is pending, unless the Department asks for it. Two files for one person cause confusion, and the second fee is not refunded.
What If the Office Points Out a Defect in Your File?
Sometimes the office finds a problem and tells the applicant. This is why your address and phone number must be right on the envelope and in the letter.
- Read exactly what is asked for. Send that paper, not the whole file again.
- Mention your old name, new name and the date of your first delivery in the covering letter.
- Send it by Speed Post and keep the proof, as before.
- Start your weekly check again from the date the corrected paper is delivered.
If the defect is a spelling difference between your papers, do not guess which one to change. The affidavit is the base. The newspaper notice and the form are corrected to match it.
A typical case we handle: a woman in Rishikesh waited ten weeks and found nothing in Part IV. Her file had been delivered, but the amount paid was the adult fee for her son, who was 16. Once the shortfall was settled as the office directed, the notice was printed the following month. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
How Do You Check the Status of an Uttarakhand Gazette Notice?
If your file went to the Government Press at Roorkee, the Delhi steps do not apply. Use these.
Step 1: Keep your submission proof
Keep the receiving, the Speed Post proof and the state fee receipt together.
Step 2: Ask the press for the expected issue
When you submit, ask in which Bhag and about when the notice will be printed.
Step 3: Open gazettes.uk.gov.in
This is the state's portal for published gazettes.
Step 4: Search by date, category and Bhag
Choose the dates after your submission, and the Name-Change category or the Bhag the press told you.
Step 5: Contact the press if nothing appears
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and quote your receipt number and date.
The state press does not publish a fixed time for private notices. Ask for an expected date when you submit, and note the name of the person who gives it.
How Do You Spot a Fake Status or a Fast-Track Offer?
- "Pay to check your status." Checking is free. The Gazette is a public document.
- "Pay extra and we will get it printed this week." Nobody outside the office can move a file up the queue.
- "Your Gazette is ready, here is the PDF." Open egazette.gov.in yourself and find the same page in the same issue. If it is not there, it is not published.
- "Your Gazette is done," with only an affidavit or a newspaper cutting in your hand. Neither of those is a Gazette.
- A website that asks for your Aadhaar number and an OTP to show the status. Close it.
A real Central notice has three things you can check: the words "Gazette of India" and "Part IV", a date of issue and a page number. With those three, anyone can find it on the portal in a few minutes.
What Should You Do When You Find Your Notice?
- Read every word. Check the old name, the new name, the father's or husband's name and the address.
- Download the PDF of the issue and keep it in your email and on your phone.
- Write down the date of the issue and the page number.
- Print two or three colour copies of your page, along with the first page of the issue.
- Then begin the record updates, with Aadhaar first.
If something in the notice is printed wrongly, act soon. The fix is a corrigendum, and it has to be applied for within six months of publication. It is free only where the mistake was made by the press.

Who Wrote and Reviewed This Page?
This page is written by the Documentation Desk Team of UttarakhandNameChange.com, the team that prepares Gazette files and watches Part IV each week for people across Uttarakhand.
It is reviewed by Advocate Vipin Chauhan.
The page says plainly that we know of no public status tracker for these files, and it does not invent one. The 30 to 45 days is the common time for a complete file, not a promise from the office. Contact details for the Department change, so the page points you to its official site.
