Name Mismatch in NEET and JEE Application in Uttarakhand
When a student's Aadhaar and class 10 certificate do not read alike at the application stage: what the testing agency does about it, what the correction window allows, and why it comes back at counselling.
A name mismatch in NEET and JEE application forms arises because the testing agency takes the name from Aadhaar while the student's class 10 certificate reads differently. The agency gives an option to record both. The lasting answer is to update Aadhaar to the class 10 certificate before the form opens. No Gazette is needed for a spelling.

A name mismatch in NEET and JEE application forms is a seasonal worry. It appears every year in the weeks when registration opens, and it lands on seventeen-year-olds and their parents with a deadline attached. This page explains name mismatch in NEET and JEE application forms for students in Uttarakhand, from the first screen to the counselling desk.
We do not fill entrance forms. The student does, on the agency's website. Our work is the Gazette, which is seldom the answer here, and we say so below. For the certificates involved, read name change in education documents in Uttarakhand.
Why Does the Mismatch Appear?
The national entrance tests for medicine and engineering are held by the National Testing Agency. In recent years its application forms have verified the candidate through Aadhaar.
- As reported from the agency's notices, the form obtains the name, date of birth, gender, photograph and address from Aadhaar through authentication.
- The parents' names are not in Aadhaar, so the candidate types those separately.
- The same form asks for the class 10 certificate, and the candidate's academic record carries the name on that certificate.
- Where the two names differ, the form stops and shows a mismatch.
The usual differences are small: a surname present on one and absent on the other, the father's name used as a middle name on Aadhaar, an initial in place of a word, or one letter. A child's Aadhaar was often made years before the board registration, by a different person, from a different paper.
What Has the Testing Agency Said?
These points are as news reports and guides relay the agency's advisories for recent tests. The notice for your own test is the authority. Read it on the test's website.
| Point | Position, as reported |
|---|---|
| Advice before applying | Update Aadhaar with the correct name and date of birth as per the class 10 certificate |
| A mismatch at the application stage | An option is given so that the candidate can go on with the form |
| What that option does | Both the name on the educational certificate and the name on Aadhaar are captured |
| The correction window | Open for a few days after applications close, for stated fields only |
| After the window | Particulars are not changed |
So a mismatch no longer blocks a candidate from applying, as it once did. That is a relief for the application. It is not a cure. The two names are now both on record, and every later desk will see them.
Where Is the Name Checked, From Form to Seat?
| Stage | What is compared | What a mismatch does |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Aadhaar and the name typed from the class 10 certificate | Shows a warning. The option lets you continue |
| Correction window | Your own review of the confirmation page | The last chance to edit the fields allowed |
| Exam centre | The admit card and the identity proof you carry | Questions at the gate, usually settled with the class 10 certificate |
| Score card | Printed from the application | Carries whatever the application said |
| Counselling registration | The score card and your identity | The name is pulled from the test record |
| Document verification at the college | Score card, class 10 and 12 certificates, Aadhaar, category and residence certificates | Has to be explained with papers, on the spot |
The last row is where it matters most. A seat is confirmed only after the documents are verified, and the reporting dates are a few days long.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Registration has not opened yet, and Aadhaar differs from class 10 | Correct Aadhaar now | No |
| Registration is open, and the form shows a mismatch | Use the option the form gives, and apply for an Aadhaar update alongside | No |
| The form is submitted with a typing mistake in the name or a parent's name | The correction window, for the fields it allows | No |
| The admit card has a mistake | Write to the agency's helpdesk at once | No |
| The score card is out and the name differs from class 10 | Correct Aadhaar, and prepare a linking paper for counselling | If the counselling body asks |
| The class 10 certificate itself is wrong | Apply to the board at once. It will not be done before the test | Ask the board |
| The student has changed name by Gazette | Aadhaar first. Carry the Gazette at every stage | Yes |
Look at the first row. If you are reading this before registration opens, you are in the best position there is.
What Should You Do Before the Form Opens?
The agency's own advice is to update Aadhaar as per the class 10 certificate before applying. Do it in class 11, or at the start of class 12, not in the week of registration.
- Put the class 10 certificate and Aadhaar side by side. Compare the name, letter by letter, with the spaces and the order.
- Check the date of birth and the photograph too. The form takes both from Aadhaar.
- Correct Aadhaar at a centre, with the class 10 certificate as proof. Aadhaar treats expanding initials, adding or removing a surname and similar spellings as a minor change, as reported.
- Check the mobile number linked with Aadhaar. The authentication code goes to it.
- Wait for the update, then download Aadhaar again and confirm the name.
- Check the category, residence and disability certificates, where you will claim on one. Each should carry the same name.
What If the Mismatch Shows While You Are Applying?
The screens differ from test to test. This is the general method.
Step 1: Read the test's own notice on Aadhaar and name mismatch
It is on the test's website, with the information bulletin.
Step 2: Do not close the form and start a second registration
More than one application can lead to cancellation.
Step 3: Use the option the form gives for a mismatch
Follow the steps on the screen. Both names are recorded.
Step 4: Type the name on the educational certificate exactly
From the class 10 certificate, letter by letter.
Step 5: Type both parents' names from the class 10 certificate
These are not in Aadhaar, and slips here are common.
Step 6: Upload the class 10 certificate as the form asks
In the file type and size it states.
Step 7: Print the confirmation page and read it the same day
Note the dates of the correction window.
Step 8: Start the Aadhaar update at once
So that by counselling your Aadhaar and your class 10 certificate agree.
What Does the Correction Window Allow?
- After applications close, the agency opens a correction window for a few days. The notice lists which fields can be edited.
- The list differs between tests and between years. Read the notice. Do not rely on last year's list.
- Guides report that fields tied to the identity check are generally not open to editing, and that large changes in the candidate's name are not allowed.
- Corrections are made online only, once, and sometimes with a fee where the change affects the fee.
- After the window, requests by email or post are not entertained.
Use the window for what it is good at: a typing slip in a parent's name, a wrong board year, a category entered wrongly. It will not turn one name into another.
What About the Admit Card and the Exam Centre?
- Check the admit card the day it is released. If it differs from your confirmation page, write to the agency's helpdesk at once.
- Carry the identity proof the admit card names, in original.
- Where your Aadhaar and the admit card differ in spelling, carry the class 10 certificate as well, and the updated Aadhaar if it has come.
- Reach early. A question at the gate is easier to settle with time in hand.
A small difference in a name is usually settled at the gate where the photograph and the other details match. Do not let the worry cost the student sleep the night before.
What Happens at Counselling and Admission?
After the result, seats are allotted through counselling: national counselling for the all-India seats, and the state's own counselling for state quota seats in Uttarakhand's medical and engineering colleges.
- The counselling body takes the candidate's name from the test record.
- At reporting, the college verifies the originals: score card, admit card, class 10 and 12 certificates, identity proof, and the category and residence certificates for a reserved or state quota seat.
- Where the names differ, counselling bodies commonly ask for a paper that supports the difference. Read the brochure of your counselling for what it lists.
- For a state quota seat, the permanent residence certificate is read as closely as the mark sheets.
A small difference
- The updated Aadhaar, now matching class 10
- A sworn statement that both forms are one person
- The class 10 certificate as the anchor
A real change of name
- The Gazette notification
- Identity proof in the new name
- The old certificates, which stay as they are
See name change in residence certificate and name spelling correction affidavit.
What About Parents' Names and Certificates?
- The father's and mother's names are typed by the candidate. Type them from the class 10 certificate, since that is the paper the college will hold them against.
- The category certificate carries the candidate's name and the father's. A home name on an old caste certificate is a common cause of trouble at verification. Get a fresh one in the class 10 name.
- The income or economically weaker section certificate is in a parent's name and is made for a period. Check its date and the name.
- The residence certificate for a state quota seat should match the class 10 certificate.
- The class 12 certificate arrives after the test. Check it against class 10 the day it comes.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?
Rarely, and never in the weeks of registration. A Gazette takes longer than an application window. It has a place where the student has changed a name, or where a counselling body asks for a public paper to link two forms.
Step 1: Check if an Aadhaar update and a sworn statement will do
For a spelling or a surname, they nearly always do.
Step 2: Count the weeks
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. Start only if it will be in hand before document verification.
Step 3: Settle who applies
For a student under 18, the parents or the legal guardian. An adult student applies personally.
Step 4: Fix the exact name, and list the other form
Keep the name on the class 10 certificate where you can.
Step 5: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper and keep the original.
Step 6: Type the form and prepare the CD
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed with two witnesses, the same text on a CD in MS Word, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,700 for a minor and Rs 1,100 for an adult, with Rs 250 more for each alias. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then carry the Gazette to counselling
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Print the published Gazette and keep it with the originals.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
For national counselling and colleges outside the state, choose the Gazette of India. A state notice may serve for the state's own counselling, but most students apply to both.
Step 1: Read the counselling brochure for what it accepts
Or ask the counselling helpdesk in writing.
Step 2: Think about every college you may report to
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private notice for a minor is being accepted, and how long it takes.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Students and Parents Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Looking at Aadhaar for the first time on the day of registration | Compare it with class 10 a year before |
| Making a second application to get round a mismatch | Use the option in the first one |
| Changing the class 10 certificate to match Aadhaar | Aadhaar is the paper that moves |
| Typing parents' names from memory | Copy them from the class 10 certificate |
| Missing the correction window | Note its dates the day you apply |
| Thinking the option at the application stage ends the matter | Counselling checks again. Update Aadhaar |
| Starting a Gazette during registration | It will not come in time, and is seldom needed |
| Carrying only photocopies to counselling | Carry originals and the linking paper |
| Letting a cafe fill the form unchecked | Read the confirmation page yourself |
A typical case we handle: the parents of a student in Dehradun called during registration week. Her Aadhaar read "Ananya Vinod Sharma", with her father's name in the middle, and her class 10 certificate read "Ananya Sharma". The form had shown a mismatch, and someone had told them to get a Gazette in a hurry. We told them there was no time for one and no need. She used the option on the form, applied the same week to correct Aadhaar on her class 10 certificate, and had the updated Aadhaar well before counselling. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, a surname or a middle name that differs between Aadhaar and the class 10 certificate, you need an Aadhaar centre and the form's own option. We are useful only where the student has changed a name, or a counselling body asks in writing for a Gazette notification.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The application is made online, from anywhere. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

Name Mismatch in NEET and JEE Application: The Short Version
The entrance form takes the name from Aadhaar, and the class 10 certificate may read differently. The agency gives an option at the application stage that records both, so the student can apply. The lasting answer is to update Aadhaar as per the class 10 certificate, ideally a year before, because counselling and the college check the names again.
Do not make a second application, and do not start a Gazette in registration week. To find out what to fix before the form opens, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
