Name Change in Scholarship Records in Uttarakhand

When a scholarship is rejected, held or not credited because a name does not match: the records that are compared, which one to correct, and what to do before the next renewal.

Quick answer

A name change in scholarship records is made by correcting whichever record is out of step. A scholarship is paid only when the student's name agrees across Aadhaar, the scholarship registration, the institute's record and the bank account. Find the odd one, correct it at its own office, then update the profile. No Gazette is needed for a mismatch.

A student in Uttarakhand comparing the name on an Aadhaar card, a class 10 certificate and a bank passbook for a scholarship application
A scholarship is paid only when the student name agrees across Aadhaar, the registration, the institute record and the bank account, so the odd record is corrected at its own office.

A name change in scholarship records is rarely a change at all. It is a student whose money has not come, and a portal that says the name does not match. This page explains name change in scholarship records for students in Uttarakhand: which records are compared, how to find the one that is wrong, and where each is corrected.

We do not handle scholarship applications. The student, the institute and the bank do. Our work is the Gazette, which has a part only where a student has taken a new name. For the certificates behind an application, read name change in education documents in Uttarakhand.

Which Records Have to Agree?

A Government scholarship is applied for on a portal and paid straight into the student's bank account. On the way, the student's name is compared across several records, none of which the scholarship office controls.

The records compared in a scholarship application and who corrects each
RecordWhere its name comes fromWho corrects it
AadhaarThe student's enrolmentUIDAI, through an Aadhaar centre
The scholarship registrationAadhaar, at the one-time registrationThe student, in the profile, where the portal allows
The institute's recordThe admission form and the class 10 certificateThe school or college
The bank accountThe account opening formThe bank branch
The caste, income or residence certificateThe application to the tehsilThe tehsil, by a fresh certificate
The last mark sheetThe board's or university's recordThe board or university

Six records, six offices. A scholarship is the place where they all meet, which is why a difference that nobody noticed for years suddenly stops a payment.

What Is the One-Time Registration?

The National Scholarship Portal asks every student to complete a one-time registration before applying. Its published answers say this registration is based on Aadhaar, and that the number it gives is used through the student's studies.

  • The student's name and date of birth in the registration are taken from Aadhaar at the identity check.
  • The student adds the parents' names and other details.
  • The portal's answers say it is advisable to review and update the registration from time to time, and that information can be updated after registration.
  • Where a registration was made on a parent's Aadhaar and the student's name has a typing mistake, the answers point to the update profile section, where the applicant's name can be updated.
  • The same answers deal with a bank account that shows as not seeded with Aadhaar, through the profile details.

So the registration follows Aadhaar. If Aadhaar is right, the registration is right, and the question moves to the other records. If Aadhaar is wrong, nothing typed into the portal will hold until Aadhaar is corrected.

Which Case Is Yours?

How Do You Put It Right?

Step 1: Read the exact message on the portal

Note which check failed: the identity, the institute's verification, or the payment.

Step 2: Write the name from each record in a column

Aadhaar, the registration, the institute's record, the bank passbook, the certificates, the mark sheet.

Step 3: Find the odd one out

Measure against the class 10 certificate, or the birth certificate for a younger child.

Step 4: Correct that record at its own office

The Aadhaar centre, the bank branch, the institute or the tehsil.

Step 5: Update the scholarship registration

Sign in and use the update profile section, so the registration reflects the corrected record.

Step 6: Check the bank account's link with Aadhaar

The portal shows if the account is seeded. If not, ask the branch to seed it.

Step 7: Ask the institute to verify again

Tell the nodal officer what was corrected and ask for the application to be verified or sent back for editing, as the stage allows.

Step 8: Track the application to payment

An application marked verified is not yet money in the account. Check until the credit shows.

Do this early in the application window. Each office takes its own time, and a window does not wait for an Aadhaar update.

What About the Bank Account?

Scholarships are paid by direct transfer to the student's own account. Guides report that the transfer follows the account linked with Aadhaar, and that the payment system compares the beneficiary's name with the bank's record.

  • The account must be in the student's own name. A parent's or a relative's account is a common reason for rejection.
  • The name on the account should match Aadhaar. An account opened years ago in a school name, or without a surname, is corrected at the branch with the updated identity proof.
  • The account must be linked with Aadhaar and active. A dormant account, or one whose identity check has lapsed, returns the payment.
  • Only one account receives transfers made through Aadhaar. If Aadhaar was later linked to a second account, the money may go there. Ask the branch which account is mapped.

A bank corrects the name on an account on your identity papers. It does not usually ask for a Gazette for a spelling. See name change in PAN card, since the bank may compare PAN as well.

What About Caste, Income and Residence Certificates?

Most scholarships rest on a certificate from the tehsil: of caste, of the family's income, or of residence. Each carries the student's name, and often a parent's.

  • An income certificate is in the name of the parent whose income is shown. That name should match the parent's name in the student's other records.
  • A caste certificate is in the student's name, with the father's name. Both are compared.
  • These certificates are checked online against the issuing office's record. A handwritten or altered one fails.
  • Where the name on a certificate is wrong, apply for a fresh one in the right name. Income certificates are made afresh each period in any case.

See name change in caste certificate and name change in residence certificate.

What Is the Institute's Part?

Every application is verified first by the school or college, through an officer named for the purpose. That officer compares the application with the institute's own admission record.

  • If the institute's record has the mistake, the officer cannot verify an application in a different spelling. Ask the office to correct its record on your class 10 certificate.
  • If the application has the mistake, ask the officer to mark it defective or return it, so that you can edit it, where the stage still allows.
  • The institute's entry for you in the national student data system should match Aadhaar as well, or other things fail besides the scholarship.
  • Meet the officer in the first week of the window. On the last day, there is a queue.

See name change in APAAR ID and DigiLocker.

What About a Student Under 18?

  • The portal's answers provide for a registration made on a parent's or legal guardian's Aadhaar where the student has none. The student's own name is then typed, which is where slips come in. Check it in the profile.
  • Get the child's own Aadhaar made and corrected early. It removes this weak point.
  • Open a bank account in the child's own name. Ask the bank how it opens an account for a minor, and in what form the name is to be given.
  • The parent's name is compared too. Give it as on the parent's own Aadhaar, in the school record and on the income certificate alike.

For a child's Aadhaar, see Baal Aadhaar child name correction.

What Should You Check Before a Renewal?

A scholarship that was paid last year can still fail this year, because a record has moved in between.

  1. Has Aadhaar been updated? A corrected spelling or a new surname on Aadhaar has to reach the registration, the bank and the institute.
  2. Has the bank account changed? A new account, or Aadhaar linked to a second one, redirects the payment.
  3. Has the institute changed? A new college makes a new record of you. Check its spelling.
  4. Is the income certificate current? And in the same parent's name as before.
  5. Has the student married or changed a name? See the Gazette section below.
Change nothing in the middle of a scholarship year if you can help it. If you must correct Aadhaar or the bank account, do it well before the renewal window and carry the correction through every record.

What If a Sanctioned Payment Failed?

  • Check the status on the scholarship portal and on the Government's payment tracking site. Note the reason shown.
  • Where the reason is the name, compare the bank passbook with Aadhaar and correct the account at the branch.
  • Where the reason is that the account is not linked, inactive or closed, put that right at the branch.
  • Tell the institute's officer and the scholarship office that the account is now in order, and ask for the payment to be tried again.
  • Write to the scheme's helpdesk with your registration number if nothing moves. For a state scholarship, the district's social welfare office is the place to ask.

A failed payment is usually sent again once the account is corrected, but not always in the same financial year. Act as soon as you see the failure.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?

Only where the student has taken a new name. Aadhaar asks for a Gazette for a major change, and every scholarship record then follows Aadhaar.

Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a mismatch

A spelling difference between two records needs no Gazette.

Step 2: Settle who applies

For a student under 18, the parents or the legal guardian. An adult student applies personally.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The spelling the student will carry on every certificate.

Step 4: Make the affidavit

State the old name, the new name and, for a minor, the date of birth. Sign before a notary.

Step 5: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 6: Type the form and prepare the CD

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed with two witnesses, the same text on a CD in MS Word, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update the records in order

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar, then the bank account, the institute's record and the scholarship registration.

Time it. A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks, and Aadhaar more after that. Do not start a change of name just before a scholarship window.

Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?

Not to a scholarship portal. The question is only which Gazette Aadhaar, the bank and the institute accept.

Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre which Gazette it accepts

The scholarship records follow Aadhaar.

Step 2: Think about the board, the university and later use

If one Gazette has to serve them all, the Gazette of India is the safer choice.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Students Make?

Common mistakes with a name in scholarship records
MistakeWhat to do
Editing the portal while Aadhaar is still wrongCorrect Aadhaar first
Giving a parent's bank accountUse an account in the student's own name
Changing Aadhaar to match a wrong recordMeasure every record against the class 10 certificate
Letting a cyber cafe type the application uncheckedRead every field before final submission
Making a second registration to get round a mismatchOne registration per student. Update the profile
Paying for a Gazette or an affidavit for a mismatchNeither is needed for a spelling difference
Applying on the last dayLeave time for the institute's verification
Treating "verified" as "paid"Track the application to the credit
Forgetting the parent's name on the income certificateMatch it to the school record

A typical case we handle: a college student from Pithoragarh had her scholarship sanctioned but not credited for two years running. Her Aadhaar and certificates said "Kavita Mehta". Her bank account, opened when she was in school, said "Kavita". She was told she needed a Gazette. She did not. She gave the branch her Aadhaar, the account name was updated, the link with Aadhaar was confirmed, and the next instalment was credited. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For a mismatch between records, always. The Aadhaar centre, the bank, the institute and the tehsil settle it between them, at little or no cost. We are useful only where a student is taking a new name and Aadhaar needs a Gazette first.

Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. A scholarship is handled by the student, the institute and the bank. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

People Also Ask About Names in Scholarship Records

Why was my scholarship rejected for a name mismatch?

Because your name differs between Aadhaar, the institute's record, the bank account or a certificate.

How do I correct my name on the scholarship portal?

Correct the source record, then use the update profile section of your registration.

Should my bank account name match Aadhaar for a scholarship?

Yes. The payment is made to the student's own account linked with Aadhaar.

Can I use my father's bank account for a scholarship?

No. Use an account in the student's own name.

Is a gazette needed for a scholarship name mismatch?

No. It is a difference between records, corrected at the record's own office.

My scholarship was sanctioned but not credited. Why?

Often the bank account is not linked with Aadhaar, is inactive, or carries a different name.

Is face authentication compulsory for NSP one-time registration?

Yes. The portal's own answers say face authentication is mandatory for generating the OTR. It is done on the NSP OTR app, with the Aadhaar Face RD app installed, using the option eKYC with FaceAuth.

Since when is the OTR number needed on NSP?

The portal says the One Time Registration number is required to fill the scholarship application from the academic year 2024-25. It is allotted once and used for the student's whole academic career.

What if my Aadhaar details change after I get the OTR?

The portal's answers say you will need to do e-KYC and face authentication again to update your details. So correct Aadhaar first, then refresh the registration.

Why does NSP face authentication fail?

Often because the Aadhaar holder has locked the biometrics. Students, parents or guardians are advised to check the lock status on the mAadhaar app or the My Aadhaar portal and keep it unlocked before trying again.

What does error 904 mean in NSP face authentication?

The portal's notice advises a student who gets error 904 to update the UIDAI AadhaarFaceRD app from the Play Store, then try again.

How is an NSP scholarship paid?

As one state department's notice explains, scholarship payments are made through the Aadhaar Payment Bridge, and the Aadhaar seeding status can be checked on the NSP portal. The account mapped to Aadhaar receives the money.
