Name Change in Gas Connection in Uttarakhand

When the cooking gas connection is in a misspelt name, an old name, or the name of a parent or spouse: the requests people call a "name change", what each needs, and why the subsidy depends on it.

Quick answer

A name change in gas connection records is made at your own distributor. If you are the consumer and your name is misspelt or has changed, it is a correction on your identity papers. If the connection is in a parent's or spouse's name, it is a transfer, with the subscription voucher and, after a death, the death certificate.

A gas connection name is corrected or transferred at your own distributor, on identity papers and the subscription voucher, with the death certificate after a death.

A cooking gas connection is often one of the oldest accounts a household has, taken decades ago in a grandfather's or a husband's name. A name change in gas connection records comes up when the subsidy stops, the identity check fails, or the holder dies. This page explains name change in gas connection records for households in Uttarakhand.

We do not deal with gas distributors, and this subject almost never needs a Gazette. The papers described here are as consumer guides report the oil companies' practice. For the electricity connection, read name change in electricity bill in Uttarakhand.

What Are the Connection, the Consumer and the Voucher?

  • The suppliers. Cooking gas in cylinders is sold by three public sector oil companies, each through its own distributors.
  • The distributor. The local agency your connection is registered with. Every request about the connection goes through it.
  • The consumer. The person in whose name the connection was released. That person's identity and address were verified, and the security deposit is in that name.
  • The subscription voucher. The paper issued when the connection was released. It records the consumer, the deposit, and the cylinders and regulator lent. It is the connection's title paper.
  • The consumer card or booklet. The record of refills, in the consumer's name and number.

A household is allowed one connection. That rule is why a distributor checks who else at the address holds one before it changes a name.

Which of Four Requests Is Yours?

Four requests commonly called a name change on a gas connection
RequestWho is the consumer after itWhen it arises
Correction of the consumer's nameThe same personA misspelling, a missing surname, a married name
Transfer within the familyA family member, with the holder's consentA father passes it to a son, a husband to a wife
Transfer after a deathThe legal heirThe registered consumer has died
RegularisationThe person who in fact holds the cylindersThe connection was handed over years ago with no paper, or the voucher is lost

Only the first is a change of name in the ordinary sense. The other three change the consumer. In all four the distributor issues a fresh voucher or updates its record, and none of them is done by a Gazette.

Why Does the Name on a Gas Connection Matter?

  1. The subsidy. Where a subsidy is paid, it goes to the bank account linked with the consumer's Aadhaar. The consumer's name with the distributor, on Aadhaar and at the bank have to agree.
  2. The identity check. The oil companies have asked consumers to complete an Aadhaar-based identity check at the distributor. A dead holder cannot complete it, and a mismatched name may fail it.
  3. Insurance. The companies carry insurance for accidents with the equipment. A claim is made by or for the registered consumer's household.
  4. Proof of address. Some offices accept the connection's papers as proof of address, in the consumer's own name only.
  5. Moving house. A transfer to another town is done by the registered consumer.

Refills keep coming under an old name for years, which is why households leave it. The identity check has ended that for many.

A Gazette touches one row, and there it is for Aadhaar. The distributor reads the identity proof.

How Do You Apply?

This is the general method. Take the company's current form from your distributor or its website.

Step 1: Find the consumer number and the voucher

The number is on the booklet and on a refill receipt. Look for the original subscription voucher.

Step 2: Decide which of the four requests it is

A correction of your own name, or a change of consumer.

Step 3: See that Aadhaar and the bank account are right

The new record will be matched with both.

Step 4: Go to your own distributor

The one the connection is registered with. Another agency cannot act on it.

Step 5: Take the form for that request

The identity form for a correction, or the transfer or regularisation form for a change of consumer.

Step 6: Fill it in the name exactly as on Aadhaar

For the person who is to be the consumer.

Step 7: Submit it with the papers, and take an acknowledgement

Hand over the old voucher only against a receipt.

Step 8: Collect the fresh voucher, and complete the identity check

Read the name on the new voucher and booklet before you leave the counter.

Which Papers Should You Carry?

These are as consumer guides report the oil companies' practice. Your distributor's list is the one to follow.

Papers for each kind of request on a gas connection, as consumer guides report
RequestPapers
Correction of your own nameThe identity form, proof of identity and address in the right name, the booklet, and the marriage certificate where the surname changed on marriage
Transfer within the familyThe new holder's identity form with proof of identity and address, the original voucher in the present holder's name, and a declaration
Transfer after a deathA copy of the death certificate, the legal heir's declaration, the heir's identity form with proof of identity and address, and the original voucher in the dead holder's name
A lost voucherAn affidavit that it is lost, with the papers for the request
  • Guides report that the security deposit stays as in the original voucher on a family transfer or a transfer after death.
  • A small administrative charge may be taken for the new papers. Ask for a receipt.
  • Give the new holder's bank account and Aadhaar for the subsidy.

How Is a Connection Transferred Within the Family?

  • Guides report that a connection can be transferred to a close family member, such as a parent, a spouse, a child, a brother or a sister.
  • The present holder consents in writing. This is far simpler than waiting until after a death.
  • The distributor checks that the new holder's household has no other connection.
  • A new subscription voucher is made in the new holder's name.
  • A transfer to someone outside the family is not the same thing. Ask the distributor what the company allows.

An elderly holder who can no longer go to the distributor for the identity check is a common reason for a family transfer. Do it while he can still sign.

What Happens After the Holder's Death?

  1. Keep the voucher and the booklet safe. Do not surrender the cylinders in a hurry.
  2. Get the death certificate, and check that the name on it matches the voucher.
  3. Agree among the heirs who is to hold the connection. It goes in one name, to a person who has no other connection.
  4. The heir applies to the distributor with the death certificate, a declaration as legal heir, identity papers and the original voucher.
  5. A new voucher is issued in the heir's name.
  6. The heir completes the identity check and gives a bank account for the subsidy.

Where the dead holder's name on the voucher differs from the death certificate, show the distributor his Aadhaar and older papers. A Gazette cannot be taken out for a person who has died. Where it is the death certificate that is wrong, have the Registrar correct it.

See name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.

What If There Is No Voucher, or the Connection Was Never Transferred?

Many households use a connection that came to them informally: from a relative who moved away, from a landlord, or bought with the cylinders decades ago. The voucher is in a stranger's name, or nobody has it.

  • The oil companies have a procedure to regularise such a connection in the name of the person who holds the equipment, as guides report.
  • The holder declares how the equipment came to him, gives identity papers, and the distributor verifies and may inspect.
  • A fresh voucher is issued in the holder's name. Ask the distributor what deposit applies.
  • A lost voucher in your own name is a smaller matter. An affidavit that it is lost goes with your request.

Regularise it rather than carry on. A connection in a name nobody can produce fails the identity check sooner or later.

What About Connections in a Woman's Name?

  • Connections released under the Government's scheme for poor households are in the name of an adult woman of the household.
  • Her name with the distributor has to match her Aadhaar and her own bank account. Many such women had their first papers made for this purpose, with a home name or a hurried spelling.
  • A spelling is a correction at the distributor, on her Aadhaar. Where Aadhaar is the wrong paper, correct that first.
  • A woman who took any connection before marriage and has since changed her surname gives the marriage certificate with her identity papers.
  • She does not have to change her surname. If Aadhaar, the bank and the distributor all carry her maiden name, nothing fails.

See name change after marriage in Uttarakhand and name change in government scheme records.

What About Piped Gas?

  • Some towns of the state now have piped gas, supplied by a city gas company and billed by meter.
  • That connection belongs to the premises, like electricity. A change of name on it follows the property: the owner's identity papers, and the sale deed or proof of succession for a new owner.
  • The company has its own form. Ask its customer office.
  • A household that moves to piped gas surrenders or deposits its cylinder connection. Do that in the registered consumer's name, and keep the paper the distributor gives.

See name change in property documents in Uttarakhand.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Come In?

Almost never for a gas connection alone. It comes in where the consumer has changed a name by choice, and Aadhaar needs a Gazette for that. The distributor then follows Aadhaar.

Step 1: Confirm that you are the consumer, and that it is a change of name

A spelling or a transfer needs no Gazette.

Step 2: Fix the exact new name

The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, the bank and the voucher.

Step 3: Make the affidavit

State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.

Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. With the published Gazette, update Aadhaar and the bank, then ask the distributor to correct its record.

See gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?

Not to a distributor, which follows your identity proof. The question is only which Gazette Aadhaar accepts.

Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre which Gazette it accepts

The distributor follows Aadhaar.

Step 2: Think about PAN and the bank

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Households Make?

Common mistakes with a name on a gas connection
MistakeWhat to do
Asking for a Gazette to move a late father's connectionThat is a transfer to the heir, at the distributor
Going on taking refills in a dead holder's nameTransfer it. The identity check will stop it
Losing or throwing away the subscription voucherKeep it with the house papers
Going to another agencyOnly your own distributor can act
Giving a relative's bank account for the subsidyIt has to be the consumer's own
Taking a second connection instead of transferringA household is allowed one
Handing over the old voucher without a receiptTake an acknowledgement
Paying a tout for a "name change"Deal with the distributor's counter, and ask for receipts
Waiting until the holder has diedA family transfer while he lives is simpler

A typical case we handle: a widow in Haldwani found her refills blocked when the identity check was asked for. The connection was in her late husband's name, and a shop told her to get a Gazette to "change the name to hers". That would have done nothing, since her own name had never changed. She took his death certificate, her declaration as his heir, her Aadhaar and the old voucher to the distributor, and a new voucher was issued to her. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For a gas connection, almost always. A correction, a family transfer, a transfer after death and a regularisation are all done at the distributor on ordinary papers. We are useful only where you are the consumer and have changed your own name by choice, and Aadhaar needs a Gazette first.

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Often the consumer's name does not match Aadhaar or the bank account.

Is Aadhaar biometric authentication compulsory for LPG now?

From 1 October 2026, domestic consumers need biometric Aadhaar authentication to book refills at the regulated price with any subsidy. The name with the distributor should match Aadhaar for it to go through.

What happens if I do not complete the LPG biometric check?

You can still get LPG, but at the market price without subsidy, and in 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders subject to local availability. Once you complete it, booking at the regulated price is enabled.

Where can I complete LPG biometric authentication?

Through the delivery person's oil company app at the time of delivery, at your distributor's showroom, or on the oil companies' own mobile apps.

How many LPG consumers have completed the check?

As of 19 September 2026, 27.43 crore active domestic consumers, about 89.9% of the total, had completed it, according to the Petroleum Ministry.

Do I need to repeat the biometric check if I already did it?

No. Consumers who have already completed it do not need to repeat it. A later transfer to a new consumer needs that person's own check.

How much subsidy is on a domestic LPG cylinder?

The Petroleum Ministry put the implicit subsidy at about Rs 210 per 14.2 kg cylinder in September 2026, against Rs 721 in June. It moves with prices.

Name Change in Gas Connection: The Short Version

Four requests go by this name, all made at your own distributor. A misspelt or changed name of the consumer is a correction on identity papers. A living holder can transfer to a family member. After a death, the heir transfers on the death certificate, a declaration and the voucher. An informal connection is regularised. Keep the subscription voucher safe.

None of these needs a Gazette. To find out which request yours is, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
