Domestic Worker Police Verification and Registration Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For households in Uttarakhand verifying a cook, maid, driver, caretaker or gardener with the police, and for the workers themselves, where the name the family uses, the name on the verification form, Aadhaar and other papers differ: why it matters, and who corrects what.
A domestic worker name mismatch is the worker's name on the police verification form differing from Aadhaar, often because the household writes a nickname. Write the name exactly as on Aadhaar, with the correct permanent address. If the worker's own papers differ, the worker corrects the odd one. No Gazette is needed for a nickname.

Many homes in Dehradun, Haldwani and Haridwar employ a cook, maid, driver or caretaker, often from another district or state. The police ask households to verify such workers. A family that has called its cook "Chhotu" for years may write that name on the form. A domestic worker name mismatch is that difference from the worker's Aadhaar. This page explains domestic worker name mismatch.
We do not do verifications, and this subject needs no Gazette. Police facts are from a 2026 report. For tenants, read rent agreements.
What Is Verification, in Brief?
- Who. Workers employed in a home: cooks, maids, drivers, caretakers, gardeners.
- Why. The police keep a record and check the worker's background.
- The law. The Uttarakhand Police Act, 2007, as reported.
- How. At the police station, or online where offered.
- Papers. The worker's photograph and identity papers.
The check runs on the name you write. Write the right one.
What Is Published?
From a report of a police review meeting in April 2026, and published guides.
| Point | What is published |
|---|---|
| The law | Provisions of the Uttarakhand Police Act, 2007 on mandatory verification of tenants and domestic help |
| Publicity | Police ranges told to publicise them widely |
| Missing papers | Where papers are missing or doubtful, credentials checked on technical platforms |
| Other states | Verification forms sent to other states and districts, with follow-up |
| Routes | The police station, and an online route described in published guides |
The fourth row is why the permanent address and name must be right. Another district's police will look for that name.
Where Is the Name Written?
| Record | Kept by | Where it is corrected |
|---|---|---|
| Verification form | The police | The police station |
| Aadhaar | The identity authority | An Aadhaar centre |
| Voter card and other papers | Their own offices | Their own offices |
| e-Shram | The labour ministry's portal | The portal |
| Bank account | The bank | The branch |
Aadhaar is the name to write. The household name stays at home.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
A household nickname
- "Chhotu", "Didi", "Bahadur"
- Written on the form
- The Aadhaar name used instead
The worker's own papers differ
- Aadhaar and voter card disagree
- Verification queries it
- The worker corrects the odd one
A wrong home address
- A village written loosely
- The home police cannot trace the worker
- The address as on Aadhaar
The first is the household's to fix. The second is the worker's.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A nickname on the form | Write the Aadhaar name; tell the station | No |
| The worker's papers disagree | The odd paper corrected | No |
| A character certificate for the worker | Police verification | No |
| e-Shram registration | e-Shram | No |
| Wages by bank | Bank records | No |
| A tenant, not a worker | Rent agreement | No |
| A delivery or ride worker | Gig worker registration | No |
| The worker changed a name by choice | Gazette, then the rest | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. Writing the Aadhaar name settles most.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Ask your police station for its current form.
Step 1: Ask the worker for Aadhaar and one more identity paper
Read the name on both.
Step 2: Write the worker's name exactly as on Aadhaar
Not the name the household calls them.
Step 3: Note the worker's permanent address correctly
Verification may be sent there.
Step 4: Submit the verification at the police station or online
With the worker's photograph and papers.
Step 5: Keep the acknowledgement
It shows you applied.
Step 6: If the worker's own papers differ, ask them to correct the odd one
Aadhaar, voter card or other.
Step 7: Pay wages to the worker's own account in the same name
If you pay by bank.
Step 8: Help the worker register on e-Shram in the Aadhaar name
For social security benefits.
What About the Household?
- Ask the worker for Aadhaar and one more identity paper.
- Write the worker's name exactly as on Aadhaar.
- Write the father's name and permanent address carefully.
- Attach a recent photograph.
- Keep the acknowledgement or receipt.
- If you wrote a nickname earlier, tell the station and give the Aadhaar name.
Read police verification.
What About the Worker?
- Your Aadhaar name is the one to give.
- If your Aadhaar and voter card differ, correct the odd one.
- Many workers have a home name and a school name. Use the papers' name.
- Keep a copy of your Aadhaar with you.
- A clean verification helps you find work.
- Ask the employer for a copy of the acknowledgement.
Read home and school names.
What About Workers From Outside?
- Many domestic workers come from other districts or states.
- Reports describe forms being sent to the home police for checking.
- The home police look for the name and address you wrote.
- A nickname or loose address means the check cannot be done.
- Write the address as on Aadhaar.
- Follow up if no report comes.
Read e-Shram for workers.
What About e-Shram and Wages?
- e-Shram is a national register of unorganised workers.
- Domestic workers can register with Aadhaar.
- Registration can help with social security schemes.
- Help the worker register in the Aadhaar name.
- If you pay wages by bank, use the worker's own account.
- Keep the name the same everywhere.
Read e-Shram and labour card.
What About Tenants and Gig Workers?
- Tenants are verified under the same provisions, as reported.
- Their names follow the rent agreement and Aadhaar.
- Delivery and ride workers are checked by their platforms.
- Each keeps its own record.
- The rule is the same: write the Aadhaar name.
- Keep copies.
Read rent agreement and gig worker registration.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Not for a nickname. Only where a worker has changed a name by choice.
Step 1: Confirm that the worker's name has in fact changed
A household nickname is not a change of name.
Step 2: Remember the verification follows Aadhaar
Write the Aadhaar name.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling for Aadhaar and other papers.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in the old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and the other papers.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
Verification is the state's, Aadhaar and e-Shram central. The Gazette of India serves both.
Step 1: Remember whose law this is
The Uttarakhand Police Act, 2007.
Step 2: Remember what else is read
Aadhaar and e-Shram, which are central.
Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India for a worker's own change of name
It serves Aadhaar and central records.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.
For the difference between the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Happen?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Writing the household nickname | The Aadhaar name |
| A loose home address | As on Aadhaar |
| No photograph | Attach one |
| No acknowledgement kept | Keep it |
| Not verifying at all | Verify |
| Wages to a relative's account | The worker's own |
| Changing Aadhaar to the nickname | Never |
| Paying an agent to "clear" a worker | Go to the police |
| Thinking a nickname needs a Gazette | It does not |
A typical case we handle: a family in Dehradun had employed a cook from Pithoragarh for years, and called him "Bahadur". They wrote that name on the verification form. His Aadhaar read "Dhan Bahadur Thapa", with his village address. The station could not send the check to his home district. The family asked us whether a Gazette was needed. It was not. They gave the station his Aadhaar name and address. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

Domestic Workers and Names: The Short Version
Uttarakhand police ask households to verify domestic workers, under the state Police Act as reported. The check runs on the name and address you write, and may be sent to the worker's home district. Write the worker's name exactly as on Aadhaar, not the household nickname, with the permanent address as on Aadhaar. If the worker's own papers differ, the worker corrects the odd one. Help them register on e-Shram in the same name.
No Gazette is needed for a nickname. To find out which record differs, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
