Train Ticket and IRCTC Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
When the name on a reserved ticket does not match the identity proof you will carry, or your booking account will not verify against Aadhaar: what the railway allows, where to ask, and the rare case where your own papers are the real problem.
A train ticket and IRCTC name mismatch is dealt with at a railway reservation office, not online. Go at least 24 hours before departure with the ticket printout and original photo identity. A confirmed ticket can be transferred only to a close family member. A booking account that will not verify needs its name brought to Aadhaar.

Travellers from the state take trains from Dehradun, Haridwar, Kathgodam or Kotdwar, and many tickets are now booked on a phone. A train ticket and IRCTC name mismatch is usually a typing slip, noticed the night before. This page explains train ticket and IRCTC name mismatch for travellers from Uttarakhand, and what the railway will and will not do.
We have no part in railway bookings, and a ticket never needs a Gazette. We say so plainly. The rules quoted are from the railways' own published pages. For air travel, read flight ticket name mismatch with identity proof.
What Is the Rule About Names and Identity on a Train?
- A reserved ticket is issued to named passengers. It is for those people and nobody else.
- For a ticket booked online, the railways' published scheme says a passenger on it has to carry photo identity in original during the trip. Where none is produced, all the passengers on that ticket are treated as travelling without a ticket and charged.
- The ticket examiner reads the chart, asks for identity, and compares the name.
- A train is more forgiving than an aircraft about a small spelling difference. It is strict about a different person.
- The name typed at booking is the passenger's to get right. The railway copies what it is given.
So the test on board is simple. Does the identity proof in your hand belong to a person named on the chart?
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
| Kind | Example | How serious |
|---|---|---|
| A slip or a short form | Ticket: Sunil Kumr. Identity: Sunil Kumar | Usually passed on board. Can be corrected at the reservation office |
| A different form of the same person's name | Ticket: Rekha Negi. Identity: Rekha Rawat, after marriage | Carry a paper that links the two. Ask for a correction if there is time |
| A different person | Ticket: the father. Traveller: the son | Not a correction. A transfer, allowed only within the family and in time |
Most worry is about the first kind, which is the least serious. Most trouble on board comes from the third, where a family sends someone else on a ticket without transferring it.
What Does the Railway Allow?
From a zonal railway's published page on change of name, and the railways' published e-ticket scheme. Rules are revised from time to time, so confirm at the reservation office.
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| Who decides | The Chief Reservation Supervisor of the reservation office, on a written application |
| By when | At least 24 hours before the train's scheduled departure |
| To whom a ticket can be transferred | A member of the same family: father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife |
| For a ticket booked online | The passenger goes to the nearest reservation office with the printed reservation slip and original photo identity of one passenger on the ticket |
| Groups | A reservation for a cadet in a National Cadet Corps group can be moved to another cadet on the group head's written request, 24 hours ahead |
| Online | Guides say there is no way to change a passenger's name on the booking website or app |
The railway calls this a discretionary power. It is a facility, not a right, and it is exercised at larger stations. A wayside halt cannot do it.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| One or two letters wrong on the ticket | Travel with identity, or ask the reservation office to correct it in time | No |
| A short form or initials on the ticket | The same | No |
| The ticket is in a maiden name and the identity in a married one | Carry the marriage certificate, or the other identity card | No |
| Someone else in the family will travel in your place | A transfer at the reservation office, 24 hours ahead | No |
| A friend or a colleague will travel in your place | Not allowed. Cancel and book afresh | No |
| The booking account will not verify with Aadhaar | Bring the account's name to Aadhaar, or correct Aadhaar | No |
| Your own identity papers carry two different names | That is your papers' problem, not the ticket's | Sometimes |
A Gazette appears once, in the last row, and there it has nothing to do with the railway.
How Do You Get a Ticket Put Right?
Step 1: Check the ticket the moment it is booked
Every passenger's name, age and gender.
Step 2: Decide which kind of mismatch it is
A slip, a different form of your name, or a different person.
Step 3: Count the hours to departure
The reservation office needs at least 24.
Step 4: Print the ticket
The reservation slip for an online booking, or carry the counter ticket.
Step 5: Go to a main reservation office in its working hours
With original photo identity in the correct name.
Step 6: Give a written application to the Chief Reservation Supervisor
State the name as booked, the name as it should read, and why.
Step 7: Keep the endorsed ticket or the stamped application
Show it with your identity on board.
Step 8: If there is no time, travel with identity and any linking paper
For a slip, explain politely to the examiner. For a different person, do not travel on that ticket.
How Is a Ticket Transferred in the Family?
- The railway lets a passenger with a confirmed ticket, who cannot travel, transfer it to a member of the same family.
- Family here means father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife. Not a cousin, an in-law or a friend.
- The passenger applies in writing at least 24 hours before departure.
- Guides say proof of the relationship is asked for, with both people's identity. A ration card, a family register extract or a passport that names the spouse serves.
- This is where family papers matter. A father and a son whose identity cards show different surnames will be asked how they are related.
- Guides add that the request is made once, and that it is not open for every kind of ticket. Ask at the office.
Where the relationship cannot be shown on paper at the counter, cancel the ticket and book again in the traveller's name. That is always allowed.
What About the Booking Account and Aadhaar?
- An online booking account is in the user's name, with a mobile number and an email address.
- The railways have tied more and more of online booking to Aadhaar authentication of the account. As reported, Tatkal tickets on the booking website and app have been open only to Aadhaar-authenticated users since July 2025.
- Authentication compares the account's particulars with Aadhaar. Where the name on the account was typed differently years ago, it can fail.
- The cure is in the account's own profile, where the name is brought to Aadhaar, or at the Aadhaar centre if Aadhaar is the wrong one.
- The account holder's name need not be the passenger's. You can book for others. Each passenger's name is typed separately, and that is the name on the chart.
We could not confirm the booking site's current screens for editing a profile name. Follow its help pages. Read name change in Aadhaar card in Uttarakhand.
What Is Different for Tatkal Tickets?
- Tatkal tickets are booked a day ahead, so the 24 hours the reservation office needs have usually gone by the time a slip is noticed.
- Railway training material says a change of name is not permitted on Tatkal tickets. Treat a Tatkal booking as final.
- As reported, online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-authenticated account and a one-time code. A Tatkal ticket at a counter needs a code sent to the mobile number given.
- Type slowly. Seats go in seconds, and that is exactly when names are mistyped.
- Save the passengers' names in the account's master list beforehand, copied from their identity cards.
What Happens on the Train?
- The examiner has the chart. He asks for identity and reads the name.
- A letter or two out, with a matching age and a plausible face, is ordinarily let pass. That is practice, not a promise.
- A different surname invites a question. A marriage certificate, a second identity card in the earlier name, or the booking message on the account holder's phone usually settles it.
- A different person on the ticket is treated as travelling without one, with the fare and a penalty.
- Stay courteous, show everything at once, and ask for a receipt for anything you are made to pay.
A complaint about a wrong penalty goes to the railway's helpline and its online complaint service, with the ticket number and the receipt.
What About Passes and Concessions?
- A concession card for a person with a disability is issued in a name, on a medical certificate. The ticket booked on it has to carry that name.
- A railway employee's or pensioner's pass lists the family members entitled to travel. A wife's or a child's name on the pass is corrected through the employee's office.
- A student's concession rests on the institution's certificate. The name follows the institution's record.
- A defence travel warrant names the soldier and the dependants as the unit's records have them.
- A season ticket carries the holder's name and is used with an identity card.
In each, the name is not corrected at the reservation counter. It is corrected at the office that issued the card or the certificate. Read name change in disability certificate and UDID and name change in pension and family pension records.
What If Your Own Papers Disagree?
Now and then a ticket is right and the traveller's identity cards are the trouble. Aadhaar says one thing, the voter card another, and neither matches the name the person books under.
- For a train, carry the identity card that matches the ticket. One good match is enough.
- Book in the name on the card you will in fact carry, not the name you are called.
- The same two names will stop you at an airline counter, a bank and an examination hall, where one match is not enough.
- So treat a scare on a train as a warning. Bring your identity papers to one name, at the offices that issue them.
Read short name and full name difference in documents and name change in voter ID.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Never for a ticket. It comes in only where you have changed your name by choice and your identity papers need a Gazette to follow. Once they do, you simply book in the new name.
Step 1: Confirm that it is your identity papers, not a ticket, that need changing
A ticket is corrected, transferred or rebooked.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and every card you carry.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar and the booking account
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Until every card is updated, book in the name on the card you will carry.
Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?
Not to the railway, which reads an identity card. The question is only which Gazette Aadhaar accepts.
Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre which Gazette it accepts
Your identity cards follow Aadhaar.
Step 2: Think about PAN, the bank and the passport
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Travellers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not reading the ticket after booking | Check it at once |
| Looking for a name change button on the website | There is none. Go to the reservation office |
| Going to the counter with twelve hours left | The office needs 24 |
| Sending a friend on your ticket | Cancel and book in the friend's name |
| Transferring to a relative without proof of the relationship | Carry a paper that shows it |
| Travelling on an online ticket with no original identity | One passenger has to carry it |
| Paying a tout to "change the name" | Only the reservation office can |
| Typing a Tatkal booking in a hurry | Save the names in the master list first |
| Asking for an affidavit or a Gazette for a ticket | Neither has any part in it |
A typical case we handle: a man from Kotdwar rang us the evening before his mother's train to ask if an affidavit would cover a ticket booked as "Shanti Devi" when her Aadhaar read "Shanta Devi". We told him no affidavit was needed and none would be looked at. She travelled with her Aadhaar, the examiner glanced at it and moved on. We did tell him her pension papers carried the same two spellings, and that was worth an afternoon at the right office. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a train ticket, always. The reservation office corrects or transfers it, or you rebook. We are useful only where the ticket has shown up a real difference in your own identity papers, and that difference is a change of name that needs a Gazette.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. A ticket is dealt with at a railway reservation office. For identity papers that disagree, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

Why will my booking account not verify with Aadhaar?
Often the account's name differs from Aadhaar.

Is Aadhaar needed to book a ticket at the station counter?
No. The ministry said there is no change in booking timings at the computerised reservation counters, so counter bookings continue without the Aadhaar authentication.

The rule on change of name, the 24 hours, the family members and the reservation office are from a zonal railway's published page and the railways' published e-ticket scheme. The Aadhaar requirement for Tatkal booking is as newspapers reported it in 2025. That there is no online name change, and that Tatkal tickets are excluded, are as guides and training material say. What an examiner passes on board is practice, not a rule. Confirm at the reservation office.

A Train Ticket Name Mismatch: The Short Version
Read the ticket when you book it. A slip is corrected, and a ticket transferred within the close family, only at a railway reservation office, on a written application at least 24 hours before departure. There is no online change. Carry original photo identity. A friend cannot travel on your ticket. An account that will not verify needs its name brought to Aadhaar.
No affidavit or Gazette has any part in a ticket. If your identity cards themselves disagree, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
