Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For those applying for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra whose application, passport or forms do not carry one name: what the ministry's portal says about accuracy, why the passport is the fixed point, what to settle before the yearly window opens, and what a slip can cost.
A Kailash Mansarovar Yatra name mismatch is prevented by typing the application from the passport, letter by letter, and making every form in that name. The ministry's portal makes accuracy the applicant's responsibility, and wrong information a ground for disqualification. Settle the passport before the window opens.

The road to Kailash from this side runs through Dharchula to the Lipulekh Pass, and pilgrims are chosen for it each year by draw. An application is filled online. A Kailash Mansarovar Yatra name mismatch is a slip in that form, or a passport that no longer says what the pilgrim's other papers say. This page explains Kailash Mansarovar Yatra name mismatch, and how to avoid it.
We do not handle yatra applications. What the portal asks for, and what it says about wrong information, are from the Ministry of External Affairs' own yatra portal and pages. For the journey to Adi Kailash, which stays within the country, read inner line permit name mismatch.
What Is the Yatra, in Brief?
- What it is. A pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, across the border.
- Who runs it. The Ministry of External Affairs, with the state tourism corporation on the Uttarakhand route.
- Which routes. The Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, and Nathu La in Sikkim.
- How pilgrims are chosen. By a computerised draw among those who apply online.
- On what paper. An ordinary Indian passport.
Because it crosses a border, this yatra is unlike any other in the state. Aadhaar is not the paper it runs on. The passport is the pilgrim's identity from the application to the return.
What Does the Ministry Say?
From the conditions for application on the ministry's yatra portal, and its page on the selection process.
| Point | What the ministry says |
|---|---|
| Passport | An ordinary Indian passport valid for at least six months as on 1 September of the current year |
| Accuracy | It is the applicant's responsibility to feed accurate information complete in every respect, including name spellings and date of birth |
| Wrong information | Incorrect or false information, or concealing a material fact, is a ground for disqualification at any stage, including during the yatra. Payments made earlier are forfeited |
| Uploads | A photograph, and scanned copies of the passport's page with photo and personal particulars and its last page with family details |
| Selection | A computer-generated random draw. Selected applicants confirm by paying a non-refundable amount by a deadline |
| After selection | The passport, and an indemnity bond on stamp paper authenticated by a first class magistrate or a notary public |
The second and third rows are plainer than most Government forms. The ministry will not check your spelling for you, and it reserves the right to send a pilgrim home.
Where Is the Pilgrim's Name Written?
| Paper | Written by | Read against |
|---|---|---|
| The passport | The passport office | Nothing. It is the standard |
| The online application | The applicant | The passport's scanned pages |
| The indemnity bond | A typist, before a notary or magistrate | The passport |
| The undertaking and the consent form | The applicant | The passport |
| The payment | The bank | The application number |
| Travel papers for the crossing | The authorities, from the passport | The passport |
Every row but the first is copied from the passport, by a hand that may slip. And the first row cannot be changed inside an application window.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
A slip in the application
- A letter, a swapped given name and surname, a wrong date of birth
- Typed in a hurry, from memory
- Only the ministry can say what is allowed after submission
A passport that is out of date
- A maiden name, an old spelling, a spouse who has changed
- True when issued, not true now
- A re-issue, before applying
A form in another name
- A bond typed in the name on Aadhaar, or as the family says it
- The passport reads differently
- A fresh form, in the passport's name
The second is the one that needs months, and is discovered in the week the window opens. A pilgrim who means to apply next year should open the passport today.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A slip in the submitted application | Write to the ministry's yatra cell at once | No |
| The passport has a spelling the other papers do not | Apply in the passport's spelling | No |
| The passport is in a maiden name | Apply in it, or re-issue the passport first | No |
| The last page's family details are out of date | Re-issue the passport before the window | No |
| The passport will not be valid long enough | Renew it before the window | No |
| The bond is in another form of the name | A fresh bond, from the passport | No |
| The date of birth differs between passport and other papers | The passport's date is used. Settle the others later | No |
| The pilgrim changed a name by choice | Gazette, then a re-issued passport, then apply | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows, and it has to be finished, with the passport re-issued, before an application is even begun.
How Do You Apply So That Names Agree?
This is the general method. Begin with the passport, months ahead.
Step 1: Open your passport to the photo page and the last page
The first has your name in two boxes. The last has your parents' and spouse's names and your address.
Step 2: See that it is an ordinary passport with enough life left
The portal asks for at least six months' validity on 1 September of the year of the yatra.
Step 3: If a name in it is wrong or out of date, have the passport re-issued first
Before the application window, not during it.
Step 4: Type the application from the passport, letter by letter
Given name and surname in their own boxes, and the date of birth.
Step 5: Read the form before submitting, and the printout after
The portal makes accuracy of name spellings the applicant's responsibility.
Step 6: Have the bond and the other forms made in the passport's name
Typed from the passport, and read before the notary or magistrate signs.
Step 7: If selected, pay from an account that can be traced to you
And keep every receipt with the application number on it.
Step 8: Carry the original passport and the forms to Delhi
Every paper in the one name the passport gives.
Why Does the Passport Come First?
- The ministry asks for an ordinary Indian passport, valid for at least six months on 1 September of the year.
- The application's name, date of birth and family details are checked against its scanned pages.
- The crossing itself is made on that passport.
- So where a passport and a person's other papers differ, the passport wins for this purpose, whatever the others say.
- A person who wants a different name on the yatra's papers has to change the passport first.
- A re-issue takes its own time, and often a police check. It cannot be counted on inside the weeks the window is open.
Read name change in passport, name change rejected at the passport office and visa application name mismatch.
What About the Passport's Last Page?
- The portal asks for a scan of the last page as well, which it describes as containing family details.
- That page carries the names of the holder's father, mother and spouse, and an address.
- A passport made before a marriage shows no spouse. One made before a divorce or a death shows a spouse who is one no longer.
- The application asks about family and emergency contacts. Its answers should not contradict the page.
- Where the page is out of date in a way that matters, the cure is a re-issue of the passport.
- Decide this well ahead. An out-of-date page is not a spelling slip the ministry can overlook on request.
We could not confirm how closely the last page is read. Treat it as read. Read name change after marriage.
What About the Application Form?
- The form is filled online by the applicant. Nobody at the ministry types it for you.
- The portal says the applicant is responsible for accuracy, and names spellings and date of birth in particular.
- Type with the passport open beside the keyboard. Put the given name and the surname in the boxes the passport puts them in.
- A person with a single name on the passport follows the portal's instruction for that case, not a guess.
- Read the whole form before submitting, and print it after.
- If you find a slip afterwards, write to the ministry's yatra cell at once, with the application number. Do not wait to see if you are selected.
Applications are made by the pilgrim on the ministry's portal. An agent who offers a "guaranteed" place is selling something the draw does not allow.
What About the Bond and the Other Forms?
- A selected pilgrim brings an indemnity bond, on stamp paper, authenticated by a first class magistrate or a notary public.
- The portal also lists an undertaking about helicopter evacuation and a consent form.
- Each begins with the pilgrim's name, parentage and address.
- A typist fills these from what he is told. Give him the passport's photo page and last page.
- Read the forms before signing. A bond in a different form of your name is a paper about someone else.
- These forms are about the risks of the yatra. They do not explain or join two names.
Read name change affidavit in Uttarakhand, on what a sworn paper can and cannot do.
What About Private Routes?
- Pilgrims who are not selected, or do not apply, sometimes travel with private operators by other routes.
- Those journeys also cross borders, and also run on the passport.
- An operator applies for permits and visas on the pilgrim's behalf, from a copy of the passport.
- Give him a clear scan of the photo page, and check every booking and permit he sends against it.
- A group permit with one name misspelt can hold a whole group at a border.
- We know nothing of any operator, and name none.
Read flight ticket name mismatch, for the flights such a journey involves.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the pilgrim has changed a name by choice. The Gazette comes first, then a re-issued passport, and only then the application. All of it has to be done before the yearly window, so count the months.
Step 1: Confirm that your own name has in fact changed
A slip typed in an application is not a change of name. It is corrected, if at all, by the ministry.
Step 2: Count the months backwards
A Gazette takes weeks. A passport re-issue takes more. The window opens once a year.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and the passport.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then have the passport re-issued
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Apply for the yatra only once the new passport is in hand.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
This yatra runs on the passport, and a passport office recognises the Gazette of India. There is no choice to weigh.
Step 1: Remember which paper this yatra runs on
The passport, and nothing else.
Step 2: Remember what a passport office recognises
The Gazette of India.
Step 3: Use the Gazette of India
A state notice is not the paper for a passport.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Applicants Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Opening the passport the week the window opens | Open it months before |
| Typing the name as on Aadhaar | As on the passport |
| Swapping given name and surname | The passport's own boxes |
| Applying on a passport about to expire | Renew it first |
| Ignoring the last page | Read it, and re-issue if it is out of date |
| A bond typed from memory | From the passport |
| Hoping a slip will not be noticed | Write to the ministry at once |
| Paying an agent for a place | Apply yourself. Places go by draw |
| Starting a Gazette during the window | It cannot be finished in time |
A typical case we handle: a woman in Haldwani wished to apply for the yatra with her husband. Her passport, made before her marriage, read "Kavita Joshi" and showed no spouse. Her Aadhaar read "Kavita Pant". She asked us in the spring if a Gazette could be done before the window closed. She had not changed her name by choice, and needed none. She could apply in the passport's name as it stood. She chose to wait a year, had the passport re-issued on her marriage certificate with her husband's name added, and applied the next season. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a slip in an application, a maiden-name passport and a bond. The ministry, the passport office and a notary settle those. We are useful only where a pilgrim has changed a name by choice and the passport needs a Gazette notification.

Names in the Yatra Application: The Short Version
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra runs on the passport alone. The ministry's portal makes the applicant responsible for correct spellings and date of birth, and treats wrong information as a ground for disqualification with payments forfeited. Open the passport months ahead. Renew or re-issue it if it is short of validity or out of date. Type the application from it, and have the bond and other forms made in its name. For a slip after submission, write to the ministry at once.
