Char Dham Yatra Registration Name Mismatch: Registration and Heli Tickets
For pilgrims and families whose yatra registration letter or Kedarnath helicopter ticket carries a name that differs from the identity paper in hand: what is read at a checkpoint and a helipad, how to register and book so that nothing differs, and what to do when a slip is found before travel.
A Char Dham Yatra registration name mismatch is avoided by one rule: register and book every pilgrim exactly as the identity paper they will carry reads. Correct a slip through the registration portal or the ticket site's helpline before you travel. No Gazette or affidavit is needed. Do not change a name on Aadhaar close to the dates.

Lakhs of people come up to the four shrines each summer, and every one of them is registered. A family's plans rest on a registration letter and, for some, a helicopter ticket. A Char Dham Yatra registration name mismatch is a letter or a ticket that does not match the pilgrim's card. This page explains Char Dham Yatra registration name mismatch, and how to avoid it.
We do not register pilgrims or book tickets, and this subject never needs a Gazette. We wrote this page since people ask us, in a panic, in May. That registration is mandatory is from the state tourism department's own answers. The rest is from news reports and guides, and the rules are set afresh each season. For Aadhaar itself, read name change in Aadhaar card.
What Is the Registration, and What Is It For?
- What it is. A record of each pilgrim going to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath, with the dates of the visit.
- Why it exists. So that the state knows who is on the route, for crowd control and for rescue when the weather turns.
- What the pilgrim gets. A registration letter with a QR code.
- Where it is checked. At verification points on the route, and before a helicopter is boarded.
- What it is read against. The identity paper the pilgrim carries.
The name on that letter is not a formality. If a pilgrim is lost on the trek, it is the name the rescuers search for and the family is told by.
What Is Published About It?
From the state tourism department's answers to common questions, and from news reports and guides to recent seasons. Check the present season's rules on the portal.
| Point | What is published |
|---|---|
| Registration | Mandatory. Each registered pilgrim is issued a QR code |
| Where | The state's registration portal and its mobile app, and counters on the route |
| Aadhaar | Aadhaar-based verification was introduced for registration in 2025, and Aadhaar-authenticated registration was reported as compulsory |
| The letter | A registration letter with a QR code is downloaded and shown at verification points |
| Helicopter tickets | Booked only on the railway's HeliYatra site, and only with a yatra registration |
| At boarding | Guides say a ticket is valid with the original identity paper, and that each passenger shows their own |
Three systems are chained here: the identity paper, the registration and the ticket. Each takes the name from the one before. A slip at the first link travels to the helipad.
Where Does a Pilgrim's Name Appear?
| Paper | Name comes from | Read at |
|---|---|---|
| The identity paper carried | Its issuing authority | Every check on the route |
| The registration letter | What was typed, or what Aadhaar returned | Verification points |
| The helicopter ticket | What the booker typed, against the registration number | The helipad |
| Train and flight tickets | What the booker typed | The train, and the airport |
| Hotel and rest house bookings | What the booker typed | The reception, with an identity paper |
One row is fixed and four are typed. The whole task is to type the four from the one. Read train ticket and IRCTC name mismatch and flight ticket name mismatch.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
A typing slip in the registration or ticket
- Someone typed a pet name, a short form or a wrong letter
- The identity paper is right
- Corrected through the portal or the ticket site, before travel
The wrong identity paper carried
- Registered on Aadhaar, and carrying a voter card that reads differently
- Nothing is wrong with any record
- Carry the paper the registration was made on
The identity paper itself is wrong
- Aadhaar has a spelling the family never noticed
- The registration faithfully copied it
- Travel on it as it is. Correct Aadhaar after the yatra, not before
The third surprises people. A registration that matches a wrong Aadhaar is a matching registration. It is the pilgrim's other papers that differ, and those are not being checked on the mountain.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The registration letter has a spelling slip | The portal or its helpline, before travel | No |
| The registration has a short form of the name | The same | No |
| The helicopter ticket differs from the registration | The ticket site's helpline, at once | No |
| A different identity paper is being carried | Carry the one the registration was made on | No |
| Aadhaar itself has a wrong spelling | Travel on it. Correct Aadhaar after you return | No |
| A married woman's card is in her maiden name | Register and book as the card reads | No |
| An elder's card has a single name | Register and book the single name | No |
| An agent's group list has several slips | Have the agent correct each, before the balance is paid | No |
The last column says no in all eight rows. This is the only page on this site where it does.
How Do You Register and Book Without a Mismatch?
This is the general method. The portal's screens change each season.
Step 1: Decide which identity paper each pilgrim will carry
One paper per person, the original, for the whole trip. For most that is Aadhaar.
Step 2: Read the name on that paper, letter by letter
And the date of birth. An elderly parent's card may read differently from what the family says.
Step 3: Register each pilgrim in exactly that name
On the state's portal or app, or at a counter. Where the portal draws the name from Aadhaar, check what it shows.
Step 4: Download the registration letter and read every name on it
Before anything else is booked. A slip here is copied onto the ticket.
Step 5: Book the helicopter with the registration number, in the same names
Type each passenger as on the identity paper. Do not shorten or tidy.
Step 6: Book trains, flights and rooms in the same names
The same paper will be shown at each.
Step 7: Correct a slip at once, through the portal or its helpline
Days before travel. A counter on the route in season has a queue of thousands.
Step 8: Carry the original paper, the letter and the ticket together
Printed and on the phone. Every pilgrim carries their own.
What About Registration Through Aadhaar?
- Reports say the portal and the app use Aadhaar-based verification, introduced in 2025.
- Where a system verifies against Aadhaar, the name it holds is Aadhaar's, whatever the pilgrim calls himself.
- So read each pilgrim's Aadhaar before you start. Many elders have not looked at theirs since it was made.
- The mobile number linked to Aadhaar matters as well, where a one-time code is sent to it. A parent's Aadhaar linked to a number nobody now holds stops the registration.
- Do not begin an Aadhaar correction in the weeks before travel. A card in the middle of an update is the worst paper to carry.
- If Aadhaar is wrong, travel on it as it is, and put it right at leisure afterwards.
Read name change in Aadhaar card and mobile SIM ownership name change.
What About the Helicopter Ticket?
- Reports say helicopter tickets to Kedarnath are sold only on the railway's HeliYatra site, against a yatra registration number.
- Slots are few and go quickly once booking opens. People book in a rush, on a phone, for parents and in-laws.
- That is exactly when a mother becomes "Mummy ji" or a father loses his middle name.
- Keep each passenger's name typed out beforehand, copied from the identity paper, and paste it.
- Guides say a ticket is valid with the original identity paper, and that each passenger shows their own.
- We could not confirm that a name on a ticket can be corrected after booking. Treat it as if it cannot, and get it right the first time.
- Tickets offered by anyone else, on any other site or on a phone call, are a known fraud of the season.
If you see a slip, contact the booking site's helpline that day, with the booking and registration numbers. Do not wait to argue it at the helipad.
What About Families, Groups and Agents?
- A family head usually registers everyone, from memory, in one sitting.
- Collect a photograph of each person's identity paper first, and type from the photographs.
- A tour operator registers a busload from a list sent on a phone. The list is where the slips are.
- Send the operator scans of the identity papers, not a typed list.
- Ask for each pilgrim's own registration letter, and read it. A group number is not enough.
- Every pilgrim carries their own letter and their own identity paper. A group gets separated on a mountain.
Read taxi permit name mismatch, for the vehicle's side of the same season.
What About Elders and Children?
- An elder's Aadhaar may carry one name, a title, or a spelling made at a camp. Register it as it reads.
- Do not add a surname to help the form. A form that insists on two boxes has its own instruction for one name. Follow that.
- An elder's date of birth on the card may be a guess made years ago. Use the card's date on every form.
- Guides say every passenger needs identity proof, and that a child's Aadhaar or birth certificate may be asked for.
- A child's name sometimes differs between the birth certificate and the school record. Use one paper, and carry it.
- Very old and very young pilgrims are the ones a rescue is most likely to be for. Their names should be the most carefully typed.
Read adding a surname to a single name, for after the yatra, and name change in birth certificate.
What About Pilgrims From Abroad?
- A foreign national, and an Indian who lives abroad and holds no Aadhaar, registers on a passport.
- The name is typed exactly as the passport's first page prints it, in the passport's order.
- Ask the portal's helpline how it registers a pilgrim without Aadhaar. We could not confirm the present steps.
- A person of Indian origin with an overseas citizen card carries that with the passport.
- Visas, flights and the registration should all read as the passport does.

Where Does a Gazette Not Come In?
Anywhere on this page. A pilgrimage registration follows the identity paper you hold today, right or wrong. The Gazette route is set out only for someone who is changing a name for other reasons and wonders how to time it around a yatra.
Step 1: Do not start a Gazette for a pilgrimage
A registration follows the identity paper you hold today. That is all it needs.
Step 2: Use this only if you are changing your name anyway
For your own reasons, and with time in hand.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and every later paper.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, update Aadhaar, and register afterwards
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Travel on the old papers if the dates are near, and change the name after you return.
What If You Are Changing Your Name Anyway?
Then keep the two things apart. A change of name runs for weeks and ends with new identity papers. A pilgrimage needs settled papers on fixed dates.
Step 1: Remember what the registration reads
Your identity paper, as it is today.
Step 2: If you are changing your name, think of Aadhaar first
Aadhaar is central, and follows the Gazette of India.
Step 3: A state notice serves state offices
It does nothing for a pilgrimage registration.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Do not time a change of name around the season
Finish it months before, or leave it until after.
To weigh the two Gazettes, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Pilgrims Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Typing names from memory | Type from a photograph of the identity paper |
| Registering on one paper and carrying another | Carry the one you registered on |
| Starting an Aadhaar update before the trip | Leave it until you return |
| Adding a surname the card does not have | Register the card as it reads |
| Not reading the registration letter | Read every name the day it is issued |
| Booking the helicopter in a rush | Keep the names typed out beforehand |
| Trusting an agent's group list | Ask for each person's own letter |
| Buying a ticket from a caller or another site | Use only the official site |
| Asking for a Gazette or an affidavit | Neither has any part in a pilgrimage |
A typical case we handle: a man in Delhi called us in May, ten days before his parents' yatra. He had booked the helicopter for them as "R K Sharma" and "Shanti Sharma". His father's Aadhaar read "Ram Kishan", with no surname, and his mother's "Shanti Devi". He asked how fast a Gazette could be had. A Gazette would not have helped, and there was no time for one in any case. His parents' cards were not wrong. His typing was. We told him to contact the booking site's helpline that day, and to change nothing on their Aadhaar. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

That registration is mandatory and that pilgrims are issued a QR code are from the state tourism department's published answers. Aadhaar-based verification from 2025, the registration letter, that helicopter tickets are sold only on the railway's site against a registration, and the registration of private vehicles are from news reports. That a ticket is valid with the original identity paper, that each passenger shows their own, and that a registration is date-specific and not transferable are from guides by travel firms. We did not test the portal or the ticket site, and could not confirm how either corrects a name. The rules change each season. The portal, the ticket site and their helplines are the authority.

Names on Yatra Papers: The Short Version
Every pilgrim is registered, and the letter is read against an identity paper on the route. A helicopter ticket is booked against the registration and read against the same paper. Choose one paper for each pilgrim, and type every registration and booking from it, letter for letter. Read the letter and the ticket the day they come. Correct a slip through the helplines at once. Leave Aadhaar alone until you are home.
No Gazette is needed for any of this. For a name on your papers that needs changing for other reasons, message us on WhatsApp 9540005064 after your return.
One Paper for Each Pilgrim. Type Everything From It.
For the yatra, use the official helplines. For a name on your papers after you return, we are on WhatsApp.
