Name Change in NPS Account in Uttarakhand

When the name on your pension account does not match your papers: the change form, the office it goes through, the proof for a correction, a marriage and a change of name, and what else to update.

Quick answer

A name change in NPS account records is requested on Form S2, through the office or service provider your account is attached to. The form asks for proof such as a marriage certificate or a Gazette copy of the change of name. A spelling correction rests on identity proof in the right name. Government employees apply through their office.

A name in an NPS account is changed on Form S2 through the nodal office: identity proof for a correction, the marriage certificate for a married surname and a Gazette copy for a change of name.

A name change in NPS account records matters most on the day you leave the scheme, when the savings of a working life are paid out against your identity papers. This page explains name change in NPS account records for subscribers in Uttarakhand: Government employees, employees of companies, and people who joined on their own.

We do not handle pension accounts. Your nodal office or service provider does. Our work is the Gazette, which the scheme's own form names as proof for a change of name. For the service book, which comes first for an employee, read name change for government employees.

What Are the Scheme, the Account Number and the Record Keeper?

The National Pension System is a contributory retirement scheme. It covers Government employees who joined service after it was introduced, employees of companies that offer it, and anyone who chooses to join.

  • Each subscriber has a Permanent Retirement Account Number, which stays the same for life.
  • The subscriber's details, contributions and holdings are kept by a central recordkeeping agency. There is more than one such agency, and your statement shows which holds your account.
  • A subscriber does not usually deal with the agency directly. The account is attached to an office or a service provider, and requests go through it.
  • The account carries the subscriber's name, father's name, date of birth, bank account, PAN and nominees.

The name entered the record from the registration form, which for a Government employee was filled in the first weeks of service, by the office. That is where most slips were made.

Who Do You Apply Through?

Kinds of pension scheme subscriber and where a change request is submitted
SubscriberWhere the request goes
Central Government employeeThe drawing and disbursing officer, and the pay and accounts office
State Government employeeThe drawing and disbursing officer, and the district treasury office
Employee of a company or a public sector bodyThe employer's nodal section, or the service provider it uses
Individual subscriberThe service provider, usually a bank branch, through which the account was opened, or online where the agency allows

The recordkeeping agency's own answers say a subscriber can request a change or correction in personal details to the associated nodal office, on Form S2. The form itself says it is to be submitted at the pay and accounts office, the district treasury office or the service provider.

So a Government employee in Uttarakhand starts at his or her own office, not at a bank and not at the agency.

What Do the Form and the Procedure Ask For?

Form S2 is the request for change or correction in subscriber master details. On the full name, its instructions say that in case of a change in name, the subscriber is to provide the requisite proof, such as a marriage certificate or a Gazette copy of the name change.

One recordkeeping agency's operating procedure for nodal offices sorts name requests into three kinds, with the papers for each.

Papers for a subscriber name change by kind of request, under the recordkeeping agency's procedure for nodal offices
Kind of requestPapers to be given
Name changeA self-attested Gazette copy, and Form S2
Name change on marriageA self-attested Gazette copy or the marriage certificate, and Form S2
Correction and otherA self-attested proof of identity in the new name, and Form S2
  • Under that procedure, the request is initiated by one nodal office and authorised by another, and the agency then processes it.
  • The office is told to verify the papers, and is responsible for their truth.
  • A state's instructions to its treasuries, as reported, add an extract of the service record in the new name and proof of the bank account in the new name. Ask your treasury what it wants.
  • The procedure deals separately with a request to change a name for a second time. Get it right the first time.

The same form asks for a Gazette notification to support a change of gender.

Choose the kind of request that is true for you. A change of name filed as a correction, with only an identity card to support it, is likely to be returned.

How Do You Apply?

Step 1: Look at your account statement or card

Note the name, father's name and date of birth exactly as the account has them, and which recordkeeping agency holds it.

Step 2: Decide the kind of request

A correction, a change on marriage, or a change of name.

Step 3: If you are an employee, settle the service record first

The office will compare the request with your service book. See the section on Government employees.

Step 4: Take Form S2

From your office, your service provider or the agency's website. Use the current version.

Step 5: Fill only the part to be changed

Tick the row for the full name and write the name letter by letter, as on the proof. Do not overwrite.

Step 6: Attach the proof, self-attested

Identity proof in the right name for a correction. The marriage certificate for a surname on marriage. The Gazette copy for a change of name.

Step 7: Submit through your office or service provider

Keep the acknowledgement. Ask when it has been initiated and when authorised.

Step 8: Check the account, then ask for a fresh card

Sign in or read the next statement to see the new name. A reprint of the card can be asked for after that.

What Is the Order for Government Employees?

For an employee, the pension account is not the first record. The service book is.

  1. The service record. A change of name is made there by the service's own procedure, which for central employees means a deed, a newspaper notice and the Gazette of India. A clerical slip is corrected on the matriculation certificate.
  2. Identity papers. Aadhaar and PAN in the same name.
  3. The salary account. The bank account your pay goes into.
  4. The pension account. Form S2 through the drawing and disbursing officer, with the office order or service record extract, the Gazette copy or marriage certificate, and identity proof.

An office that sees the pension account request before the service book is in order will send it back. Do them in that sequence.

State employees in Uttarakhand apply through their office to the district treasury. We could not confirm the state's own instructions on papers, so ask the treasury for its list. See name change for government employees.

What About Company Employees and Individual Subscribers?

  • Company employees. Give Form S2 and the proof to the employer's nodal section, or to the service provider the employer names.
  • Individual subscribers. Give them to the service provider through which the account was opened, usually a bank branch. Take an acknowledgement.
  • Accounts opened online. The recordkeeping agencies offer some changes online after sign-in. Guides differ on how far a name can be changed that way, and it varies by agency. Sign in and see what your account offers, and fall back on Form S2 if the name is not open to you.
  • Identity check. Where the account was opened on Aadhaar, the name was taken from Aadhaar. Correct Aadhaar first if it is the paper that is wrong.

See name change in Aadhaar card in Uttarakhand.

What Else Should Be Updated With the Name?

In the account

  • The bank account on record, which should be in the same name
  • PAN, which the account is linked with
  • The father's name, if that also needs correcting
  • Nominees, each in the name on the nominee's own identity proof
  • The mobile number and email, so that codes and statements reach you

After the change

  • A reprint of the account card, on request and for a charge
  • A fresh statement, to keep as proof
  • The employer's own records, if not already done
  • The nomination filed afresh, where a spouse's name has changed

The same Form S2 carries changes to nomination and to bank details, so they can go in with the name. See name change in PAN card.

Why Should It Be Done Before You Exit?

At retirement, or on leaving the scheme, part of the savings is paid to the subscriber and the rest buys a pension from an insurer. Each step is an identity check.

  • The withdrawal is paid into the bank account on record, and the name has to match.
  • The insurer issuing the pension makes its own check, against identity papers and the account.
  • The nodal office has to verify the exit request, and compares it with the service record.
  • A mismatch found at that point holds up money a retired person is waiting for.

A family claiming after a subscriber's death faces the same checks, without the subscriber to explain. So look at your account once a year, and correct a name while you are in service and the office knows you.

For a pension already in payment, see name change in pension and family pension records.

What About the Pension Scheme for the Unorganised Sector?

The Atal Pension Yojana is a separate scheme, joined through a savings bank account, with contributions taken from that account.

  • A subscriber's details there are corrected through the bank branch where the scheme was joined.
  • The name follows the savings account, and the account follows the customer's identity papers. Correct the bank account first.
  • We could not confirm the scheme's own form for a name correction. Ask the branch.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?

Use this for a change of name, the one kind of request for which the scheme's papers ask for a Gazette copy. The scheme is a national one, and the Gazette of India is accepted everywhere.

Step 1: Confirm that it is a change, and not a correction or a marriage

Those two need no Gazette.

Step 2: If you are an employee, write to your office first

Your service has its own procedure, and a central employee gives a deed in place of an affidavit.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The same spelling you will use on every paper.

Step 4: Make the affidavit, or the deed

State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address.

Step 5: Publish the newspaper notice

In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.

Step 6: Type the form and prepare the CD

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, the undertaking, the same text on a CD in MS Word, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then file Form S2

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Print the published Gazette, self-attest a copy, and give it with Form S2 after your service record and identity papers are updated.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?

The form speaks of a Gazette copy without saying which. A state employee's office may accept a state notice. A central office, PAN and Aadhaar look for the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Ask your nodal office which Gazette it accepts

In writing.

Step 2: Think about PAN, Aadhaar and the bank

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.

Which Mistakes Do Subscribers Make?

Common mistakes with a name in a pension scheme account
MistakeWhat to do
Never reading the name on the statementCheck it once a year
Sending the form to the recordkeeping agencySubmit it through your office or service provider
Filing a change of name as a correctionChoose the true kind of request, with its proof
Applying before the service book is correctedThe service record first, then the account
Paying for a Gazette to fix a spellingIdentity proof in the right name is the paper
Getting a Gazette for a surname on marriageThe marriage certificate is accepted
Overwriting on the formFill a fresh form
Changing the name and not the bank accountThe payout goes to the account on record
Leaving it until retirementCorrect it while in service

A typical case we handle: a teacher in a Government school in Nainital district found her pension account in her maiden name, though her service book and Aadhaar had her married name. Her office told her to bring a Gazette. She did not need one. The scheme's procedure accepts a marriage certificate for a change on marriage. She gave Form S2 with the marriage certificate and her service record extract through her office, and the treasury authorised the change. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For a spelling correction, identity proof. For a surname on marriage, the marriage certificate. We are useful for the third kind of request, a change of name, where the scheme's papers ask for a Gazette copy.

Where do Government employees submit Form S2?

What is the Unified Pension Scheme?

An option under the National Pension System for eligible Central Government employees, with an assured monthly payout after retirement. It was notified on 24 January 2025 and came into effect on 1 April 2025.

Is the last date to opt for UPS over?

For existing employees and past retirees, yes. The Finance Ministry gave 30 November 2025 as the last date, after extending it from 30 June and then 30 September 2025. New Central Government recruits choose within 30 days of joining.

Does my PRAN change if I opt for UPS?

No new account is opened for the name to be corrected in. When an employee in service opts for UPS, the outstanding corpus in the Permanent Retirement Account Number moves to the employee's individual corpus under UPS. So correct the name on the same account, on Form S2.

Can I switch from UPS back to NPS?

Yes, once. Central Government employees who chose UPS have a one-time, one-way option to switch back to NPS, under conditions in the rules.

Does UPS apply to Uttarakhand state employees?

The Central Government's UPS is for its own employees covered by NPS. A state employee in Uttarakhand should ask the district treasury what the state's own scheme allows.

Could a widow of a retired employee opt for UPS?

Yes. The option was open to the legally wedded spouse of a deceased past retiree, within the same deadline. Her name had to match the papers that linked her to the subscriber, so correct a mismatch first.
