UPSC and SSC Application Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For candidates from Uttarakhand applying to the central commissions, whose class 10 certificate, degree, Aadhaar and certificates do not all carry one name: which name to register in, what the commission has said about a changed name, and what to put right before the form opens.
A UPSC and SSC application name mismatch is avoided by registering in the name on the class 10 certificate and bringing Aadhaar and other certificates to it first. Where the name itself has changed since class 10, the public service commission has said a Gazette notification is required. Start that weeks before the form opens.

A central recruitment runs for a year or more, through a form, two or three examinations and a verification of originals. A UPSC and SSC application name mismatch can surface at any of those stages, and the later it does, the more it costs. This page explains UPSC and SSC application name mismatch for candidates from Uttarakhand.
We prepare the Gazette notification for a change of name. What the public service commission requires is from its notice of February 2025, as news agencies reported it. Notices change with each examination, so read the current one. For the state's own commissions, read UKPSC and UKSSSC application name mismatch.
Which Commissions, and What Is the One Registration?
- The public service commission of the Union. It recruits to the civil services and other higher central posts.
- The staff selection commission. It recruits to a large range of central posts, from clerks and constables to inspectors and auditors.
- One registration. Each commission has candidates register a profile once, and then apply to its examinations from that profile.
- What the profile holds. The candidate's name, date of birth, parents' names and contact details.
- Why that matters. A name typed once is used for every examination of that commission for years.
The convenience has a price. A slip that once affected one form now affects them all, and the commission has made the name one of the fields a candidate cannot go back and change.
What Has the Public Service Commission Said?
From the commission's notice of February 2025 on its registration and the civil services examination of that year, as news agencies reported it.
| Point | What the notice said |
|---|---|
| The name field | It is labelled as the name as per class 10 |
| Fields that cannot be changed | The name, the date of birth, the father's name and the mother's name, with the mobile number and email |
| A changed name | Where a candidate's name has changed and differs from the matriculation or higher certificate, a Gazette notification to that effect is required |
| No Gazette yet | It could be uploaded in a window opened after the preliminary result |
| Corrections after applying | Only in a correction window of seven days after the form closed |
The notice was for one year's examination. The principle has been steady: the class 10 name is the registered name, and a different name is accepted on a Gazette notification. Read the current notice for the dates and the windows.
What About the Staff Selection Commission?
- Guides to its registration say the name is to be entered exactly as on the class 10 certificate.
- They say the form asks if the candidate has ever changed a name, and has a separate field for the changed name.
- Proof is called for at document verification: a Gazette notification, or a marriage certificate where that is the reason.
- The commission has added identity checks by Aadhaar to its registration and examinations in recent years.
- How many times a profile can be edited, and which fields, is set in its notices and has changed more than once.
We did not read the commission's current notice. The safe course is the same as for the other commission: the class 10 name in the name field, the present name where the form asks for it, and the linking paper ready.
Why Is Class 10 the Anchor?
- It is the first public certificate. A board issues it on a school's record, and it carries the name and the date of birth together.
- It does not change. A board corrects it only within narrow limits and time.
- Everyone has one. Every candidate for these examinations has passed class 10.
- Age is proved by it. The commissions take the date of birth from it, and age limits turn on that date.
- Other papers are read against it. Class 12, the degree, and each certificate filed for a relaxation or a reservation.
Aadhaar is not the anchor here, though it is the paper in every candidate's pocket. That is the commonest source of trouble: a form typed from Aadhaar, for a commission that reads class 10. Read name change in education documents.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
Another paper differs from class 10
- Aadhaar, a degree or a certificate has a spelling, an initial or a missing surname
- Your name has not changed
- Cured by correcting that paper, before you apply
The class 10 certificate is the odd one
- Every other paper agrees, and class 10 has the slip
- The board may correct it, within its rules and time
- If it will not, the class 10 form is still the one to register in
The name has changed since class 10
- By marriage, by choice, or by adding or dropping a surname for all purposes
- No correction will make the papers agree, since both are right for their dates
- Cured by a Gazette notification, which the commission asks for
The first is by far the most common, and needs no Gazette. Candidates lose weeks and money by treating a spelling as a change of name. Read name spelling correction.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar differs from class 10 by a spelling | Correct Aadhaar, then register | No |
| The degree has a short form or a different order | The university corrects it, or gives a letter | No |
| The father's name differs between certificates | Correct the paper that differs from class 10 | No |
| A reservation certificate has a different spelling | A fresh certificate from the tehsil | No |
| You typed the wrong spelling in the profile | The correction window, if the field allows. Otherwise write to the commission | No |
| A woman took a married surname on Aadhaar only | Apply in the class 10 name. Carry the marriage certificate | Ask the commission |
| The name has changed since class 10 for all purposes | Gazette, then Aadhaar, then register | Yes |
A Gazette is certain in the last row and possible in the one before it. Everywhere else an ordinary office does the work.
What Should You Do Before the Form Opens?
Step 1: Put the class 10 certificate in front of you
The name, the father's name, the mother's name and the date of birth on it are the ones to use.
Step 2: Lay every other paper beside it
Class 12, the degree, Aadhaar, and each certificate you will rely on.
Step 3: Mark each paper that differs, and say how
A spelling, a missing surname, a different father's name, a new name.
Step 4: Correct the papers that can be corrected
Aadhaar at an Aadhaar centre, a certificate at the tehsil, a degree at the university.
Step 5: Decide if your name has in fact changed
If so, a Gazette is the paper the commission asks for. Start it now.
Step 6: Register in the class 10 name, letter by letter
Type it yourself. Do not let a cyber cafe type it from Aadhaar.
Step 7: Read the preview, and use the correction window if you have slipped
The window is short, and some fields cannot be changed at all.
Step 8: Keep one photo identity ready in the same name
The one you named in the form, for the examination hall.
What About the Profile, and the Correction Window?
- The profile is filled once and reused. Fill it on a quiet day, not on the last evening of a form.
- The public service commission's 2025 notice put the name, the date of birth and the parents' names beyond a candidate's own editing.
- Other entries could be changed, and a correction window of seven days followed the closing date.
- A slip in a locked field is raised with the commission in writing, through the route its notice gives. Do it at once, with the class 10 certificate.
- A second profile made to escape a wrong first one is a far worse mistake than the slip. Commissions treat multiple registrations seriously.
- Keep a print of the profile and of each submitted form. They show what was entered, and when.
What Is Read at the Examination Hall?
- The admit card is printed from the form, in the registered name.
- The invigilator compares it with a photo identity. The form usually asks which identity you will carry, and you are to carry that one.
- Where Aadhaar-based checks are used, the name on Aadhaar is compared by a machine.
- A candidate whose photo identity reads differently from the admit card can be stopped at the gate, or let in on an undertaking.
- So the photo identity is the paper to bring to the class 10 name before anything else.
A small difference is usually allowed with a note. Nobody should plan on that. One morning at an Aadhaar centre months earlier removes the risk.
What Happens at Document Verification and the Interview?
- What is called for. Original certificates of age, education, category and any claim made in the form.
- How they are read. Each against the form, and all against the class 10 certificate.
- A small difference. The officer may accept it with an explanation, ask for an undertaking, or give time to bring a corrected paper.
- A real difference. A changed name without a Gazette, or a different father's name, puts the candidature in question.
- After selection. The appointing department verifies again, and the police verify character and antecedents in the name on the papers.
A candidate who has reached this stage has passed examinations that most do not. It is the worst place to discover a spelling. Read name mismatch at document verification and name mismatch in police verification.
What About Married Women, and Reservation Certificates?
Married women
- Marriage does not change a name by itself. A woman may go on using her class 10 name
- If only Aadhaar carries the married surname, the simpler course is to apply in the class 10 name and carry the marriage certificate
- If she has changed her name for all purposes, the commission's notice points to a Gazette notification
- Decide before registering, since the profile's name cannot be changed later
Reservation and other certificates
- Caste, backward class, economically weaker section and disability certificates are issued on an application
- They are often typed from Aadhaar
- At verification they are read against class 10
- Get each one in the class 10 name, in the format and year the notice asks for
Read is name change compulsory after marriage, name change in EWS certificate, name change in caste certificate and name change in OBC certificate.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this where your name has in fact changed since class 10. This is one of the few subjects on which the recruiting body itself names the Gazette notification as the paper it wants. It does nothing for a spelling on another paper.
Step 1: Start as soon as you decide to apply
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. An examination calendar does not wait.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the class 10 certificate
Letter by letter. The Gazette has to carry the class 10 name as the old one.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar and keep the Gazette for every stage
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Download the published notice and keep several prints.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
The notice speaks of a Gazette notification without saying which. For a central commission and a central post, do not take the chance.
Step 1: Read what the notice says
It asks for a Gazette notification. Ask the commission's help desk if a state notice will do.
Step 2: Think about a central service
A candidate for a central post is safest with the Gazette of India.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Candidates Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Typing the profile from Aadhaar | Type from the class 10 certificate |
| Letting a cyber cafe fill the profile | Fill it yourself, and read the preview |
| Registering on the last evening | Register on a quiet day, well ahead |
| Making a second profile to fix a wrong one | Never. Write to the commission |
| Treating a spelling as a change of name | Correct the paper that differs |
| Starting a Gazette after the result | Start it before the form opens |
| Offering an affidavit for a changed name | The notice names a Gazette notification |
| Getting certificates typed from Aadhaar | Have them issued in the class 10 name |
| Carrying a different photo identity to the hall | Carry the one named in the form |
A typical case we handle: a candidate from Almora had passed class 10 as "Deepak Singh". In college he began writing "Deepak Singh Mehra", and his degree, Aadhaar and PAN all carried that. He meant to register with the commission in the fuller name and asked us if an affidavit would cover it. It would not. The surname was an addition made after class 10, for all purposes, and the commission's notice asks for a Gazette for that. He had the Gazette published before the next form opened, and registered in the class 10 name with it in hand. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

That the name, the date of birth and the parents' names in the registration profile cannot be changed, that a changed name requires a Gazette notification, and the windows for uploading it and for corrections, are from the public service commission's notice of February 2025 as news agencies reported it. We did not read that notice on the commission's own site, or the current notice of either commission. What the staff selection commission asks is as guides describe it. What happens at the hall and at verification is general guidance. Each examination's own notice is the authority.

A Name in a Central Commission's Form: The Short Version
Register in the name on your class 10 certificate, typed by you, letter by letter. Before that, bring Aadhaar, your degree and each certificate to the same name at their own offices. The profile's name cannot be changed later. Where your name has in fact changed since class 10, the public service commission asks for a Gazette notification, so start it weeks before the form opens. Carry the photo identity you named, in the same name.
