Uttarakhand Technical University Degree Name Correction

From the university's application form for an original or duplicate degree, on its own website.

The first row sets this university apart. Others on this site ask for the name on the high school certificate. This one asks for the name as the student wrote it in the examination form. The degree repeats what the student has been writing all along.

The first kind is the more dangerous, because nothing inside the university looks wrong. It is found by an employer holding the degree against a class 10 certificate.

Step 1: Read your first semester marksheet against the class 10 certificate

Your name, your father's name and your mother's name.

Step 2: Look at your last examination form

The degree form asks for the name as written there.

Step 3: Ask your institute's examination cell to show its record

See whether the institute's entry or the university's printing is at fault.

Step 4: Give the institute a written request

Stating the entry as printed and as it should read, with your class 10 certificate.

Step 5: Ask how the university takes a correction

Its form, its fee, and whether the wrong marksheet has to be returned.

Step 6: See that the next examination form carries the corrected name

Each semester's form is filled afresh.

Step 7: Bring Aadhaar to the same name

Scholarship, placement and later tests read it.

Step 8: Apply for the degree only after every marksheet is right

In your own handwriting, as the form asks, with a marksheet's copy.

• Admission to an engineering course follows a national entrance test and a counselling. The name on the allotment comes from that application.
• The institute opens its record from the allotment letter. A slip typed at seventeen in a test form can reach a degree at twenty-two.
• At reporting, originals are on the table. That is the day to ask the institute to enter the name as on class 10.
• A student who joins in the second year after a polytechnic diploma is admitted on that diploma. Its name is read as closely as the class 10 certificate.
• Management and computer courses have their own entrance routes. The principle is the same.
• A category or residence certificate used at counselling should carry the same name.

1. The form. The university's application for an original or duplicate degree.
2. The name. In full, in English block letters, as written in the examination form, and in Hindi.
3. The parents. The father's name and the mother's name.
4. The numbers. Roll number and university enrolment number.
5. The course. The institution, the examination passed, the year and the division.
6. The enclosure. A photocopy of the marksheet.
7. The hand. Your own, correct and legible.

The form's note says a provisional certificate is issued only where the final degree is not ready. It states its own fee. Ask your institute whether the degree is now applied for online. Whichever way, apply soon after the final result.

Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed

A slip against the class 10 certificate is corrected by the university.

Step 2: Ask the university how it treats a changed name

Its degree follows the examination form. A later change is usually shown by a Gazette kept beside the degree.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the class 10 certificate

Letter by letter.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then carry the Gazette with your degree

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Update Aadhaar and your passport, and show the Gazette wherever the degree is read.

A typical case we handle: an engineering graduate from an institute in Roorkee had an offer from a software company. His class 10 certificate read "Mohammad Faizan Ansari". His marksheets and degree read "Mohd Faizan", as his entrance application had been typed. The company's background check flagged it, and he asked us for a Gazette. His name had never changed, so that was the wrong paper. He applied to the university through his institute with his class 10 certificate, and gave the company the institute's letter while the corrected papers were awaited. When was Uttarakhand Technical University established?

The university's older website says it was established on 27 January 2005 by the Government of Uttarakhand, through the Uttarakhand Technical University Act 2005. Its letterhead cites Act No. 415 of 2005.

What is the full name of UTU now?

Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University. Its own brochure says it is popularly known as Uttarakhand Technical University, or UTU, and its letterhead adds 'formerly Uttarakhand Technical University'.

Where is the university's main campus?

At Suddhowala, on the Chakrata Road side of Dehradun, with the postal address P.O. Chandanwadi, Premnagar. Its older site places the campus on NH-72, Suddhowala.

Is it the only technical affiliating university in Uttarakhand?

Its older website described it as the only affiliating university of the state for technical institutions, with 81 affiliated private institutions and 12 Government institutions. The count may have changed since.
