GATE Application Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand

For engineering and science graduates whose photo identity, degree papers and class 10 certificate do not carry one name: which name the application takes, what the correction window allows, and who reads the scorecard afterwards, at admission and at recruitment.

Quick answer

A GATE application name mismatch is avoided by entering the name exactly as on the photo identity you will carry to the examination, with your degree papers already in the same name. In recent years a change of name has been allowed in the correction window, on a fee. The scorecard is issued in the name entered.

An engineering graduate in Uttarakhand checking his GATE application name against his Aadhaar card and degree marksheet before registering
The GATE scorecard carries the name you type, so enter it exactly as on the photo identity you will carry, with your degree papers already in that name.

The graduate aptitude test in engineering opens two doors: a postgraduate seat, and a job in a public sector company. Both are opened by a scorecard, in the name typed at registration. A GATE application name mismatch is found months later, at a counselling desk or an interview. This page explains GATE application name mismatch for graduates in Uttarakhand.

We prepare the Gazette notification for a change of name. How the application treats names is as news reports and guides to recent rounds describe it. The organising institute's brochure for your year is the authority, and we did not read it. For undergraduate admission, read CUET application name mismatch.

What Is the Test, and What Is the Score For?

  • What it is. A national test for graduates and final-year students of engineering, technology and science.
  • Who conducts it. The national institutes of technology and science, one of them organising each year. An institute in Roorkee organised a recent round.
  • How one applies. On the organising institute's online application system.
  • What it gives. A scorecard.
  • What the score is used for. Admission to postgraduate courses with a scholarship, and recruitment by public sector companies.

The candidate types a name once. It is then printed on an admit card and a scorecard, and that scorecard is shown to institutes and employers for a long time after. A slip made in September can meet a candidate again two summers later.

What Do the Instructions and the Correction Window Say?

From news reports and guides to recent rounds. The rule on changing a name has not been the same every year.

What reports say about names in a graduate aptitude test application
PointWhat reports say
Which nameThe applicant's name must match the name on the valid photo identity, which is shown in original at the examination
PrefixesNo prefix is to be placed before the name
The scorecardIssued in the name entered in the application
The correction windowOpens for some weeks after registration closes, on the application system
A change in nameListed among the changes allowed in the window in recent rounds, on a fee. Reported as not allowed in at least one earlier round
Supporting paperCandidates report being asked to upload a document for a change of name

Notice what the first row asks for. It is the identity paper, not the class 10 certificate. That makes this test different from most. A graduate whose Aadhaar has drifted from the degree has to settle which of them is right before typing anything.

Which Papers Does a Graduate Hold?

The papers a graduate holds and who reads each

The photo identityWhatever proof it was made on, perhaps updated sinceThe examination hall

The degree and its marksheetsThe university's enrolment, from the admission papersInstitutes and employers, for eligibility
Category certificatesThe tehsil, from the application made thereInstitutes and employers, for a reserved seat or post
The scorecardThe test applicationEveryone, afterwards

By the final year of a degree these papers span seven or eight years. The identity paper is usually the newest and the most likely to have been changed along the way.

What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?

A typing slip in the application

  • The papers agree, and the application was typed wrongly
  • Or a title was put before the name
  • Cured in the correction window, where it allows

The identity paper differs from the degree

  • A missing surname, an added one or a different spelling
  • The hall reads one, and the institute or employer the other
  • Cured by correcting the paper that is wrong, before registering

A changed name

  • The graduate married, or changed a name by choice, after the degree
  • The degree is right for the old name
  • Linked by the marriage certificate, or by a Gazette for a change by choice

The second kind is the one to deal with first. An application that follows the identity paper is correct by the rule, and still wrong for the reader who holds the degree.

What Should You Do Before You Register?

Step 1: Choose the photo identity you will carry to the examination

Aadhaar, a passport or another paper the brochure allows.

Step 2: Put it beside your class 10 certificate and your degree papers

All three should carry one name.

Step 3: Correct the identity paper, if it is the odd one

At its own office, before you register.

Step 4: Have a wrong marksheet corrected by the university

While you are still a student, through the college.

Step 5: Get category certificates in the same name

In the format the brochure names.

Step 6: Type the name yourself, exactly as the identity paper has it

With no title or prefix before it.

Step 7: Read the submitted application, and use the correction window for any slip

A change of name in the window carries a fee and may need a supporting paper.

Step 8: Keep the scorecard, and use the same name in every later form

For admission and for recruitment.

What About the Photo Identity, at the Hall?

  • The candidate names an identity paper in the application, and shows it in original on the day.
  • The invigilator compares the name on it with the admit card, and the face with the photograph.
  • So the identity paper chosen at registration has to be valid, in hand and unchanged on the day of the test, some months later.
  • A candidate who updates Aadhaar between registration and the test, for a spelling or a married surname, arrives with a paper that no longer matches the admit card.
  • Make any correction to the identity paper before registering. Then leave it alone until the test is over.
  • A passport or a college identity card may be allowed in place of Aadhaar. Read the brochure's list.

Read admit card and hall ticket name mismatch.

What About the Degree Papers?

  • The test is open to graduates and to students near the end of the degree. Many apply before the degree is issued.
  • What exists then is the university's enrolment and the marksheets so far. The degree will be printed from the same record.
  • A slip in that record is far easier to correct while the candidate is a student. The college forwards the request.
  • The class 10 certificate remains the proof of the name and the date of birth. A university follows it.
  • A candidate from one of the state's engineering or agricultural institutions should read the first marksheet against class 10, well before the final year.
  • A degree in one name and a scorecard in another is the commonest reason a file is held at admission.

Read name change in education documents and polytechnic diploma certificate name correction.

What If the Name Changed After the Degree?

  • Many candidates sit the test a few years after graduating, some of them after marriage.
  • A woman who has taken a married surname on Aadhaar holds a degree in her earlier name. Both are right.
  • She can apply in the earlier name, on an identity paper that still carries it, such as a passport.
  • Or she can apply in the married name on the updated identity paper, and keep the marriage certificate with her degree for every later reader.
  • What does not work is a third form, such as both surnames together, that no paper carries.
  • A change by choice is different. It needs a Gazette, and the identity paper is then updated on it.

Read name change after marriage and name correction in marriage registration certificate.

What Is Read at Admission on the Score?

  1. A fresh application. Each institute, or a common counselling, takes its own form, with the test registration number.
  2. The match. The name there is compared with the scorecard.
  3. Reporting. The candidate brings originals: class 10, class 12, the degree and marksheets, category certificates and an identity paper.
  4. Verification. All are read against one another and the scorecard.
  5. The scholarship. Paid by transfer, to an account in the student's name, on Aadhaar.

Type each later form in exactly the scorecard's name. Where the scorecard itself carries a slip, say so in writing at the start, with the papers that explain it. Read name mismatch at document verification and name change in scholarship records.

What Is Read at Recruitment on the Score?

  • Public sector companies shortlist graduate engineers on the test score, each on its own advertisement.
  • The company's application asks for the test registration number and the name as on the scorecard.
  • At the interview and before joining, it verifies class 10, the degree, category certificates and the scorecard.
  • Companies are strict readers. An offer is commonly subject to the papers being found in order.
  • After joining, a service record is opened in that name, and a character check is made in it.
  • A candidate who knows of a difference should carry the linking paper to the interview, and not wait to be asked.

Read name change for railway and army candidates and name mismatch in police verification and character certificate.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?

Use this where your name has in fact been changed by choice, so that your degree and class 10 certificate are right for a name you no longer use. It does nothing for a slip in the application.

Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed

A slip on an identity paper or a marksheet is corrected at its own office.

Step 2: Look at the calendar

A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. Finish it before registration opens.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the class 10 certificate

Letter by letter.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update the identity paper you will carry

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Keep the Gazette with your degree papers for every later verification.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?

For a national test, central institutes and companies anywhere in the country, do not take the chance.

Step 1: Remember who reads the scorecard

Central institutes and public sector companies, across the country.

Step 2: Think about the identity paper, the degree and a job in another state

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Candidates Make?

Common mistakes with names in a graduate aptitude test application
MistakeWhat to do
Typing the name from memoryCopy it from the identity paper you will carry
Putting a title before the nameEnter the name alone
Registering while Aadhaar and the degree disagreeBring them to one name first
Updating the identity paper between registration and the testCorrect it before, then leave it
Missing the correction windowNote its dates when you register
Inventing a third form of a married nameUse a name some paper carries
Typing later forms differently from the scorecardCopy the scorecard exactly
Starting a Gazette after the resultFinish it before you register
Treating a spelling as a change of nameCorrect the paper that differs

A typical case we handle: an engineering graduate from Roorkee registered as "Ankit Kumar", the name on his Aadhaar. His class 10 certificate and degree read "Ankit Kumar Saini". He had a good score and an interview call from a public sector company, and asked us for a Gazette to drop the surname. That would have set his name against his own degree. We advised against it. He corrected Aadhaar to the degree's name, and wrote to the organising institute and the company with both papers before the interview. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For a slip in the application, on an identity paper, a marksheet or a certificate, and for a married surname. The organising institute, the office concerned or a marriage certificate settles those. We are useful where your name has in fact been changed by choice and a Gazette notification is needed.
