HNB Garhwal University Degree Name Correction
For students and former students of the university at Srinagar whose marksheet or degree carries a wrong name: what the university's own form asks for, where to send it, why names are needed in Hindi, and how a correction differs from a change of name.
An HNB Garhwal University degree name correction is asked for on the university's application format, sent to its examination section. For a correction in a name, the form asks for the original marksheet or certificate with an affidavit and other documents. It lists a fee, and speaks of at least three weeks.

For half a century most graduates of the Garhwal hills took their degrees from this university, at its campuses or at colleges affiliated to it. Those degrees are now read in recruitments across the country. An HNB Garhwal University degree name correction is, for once, a request with a published form. This page explains HNB Garhwal University degree name correction for its students and former students.
We do not deal with the university. We prepare the Gazette notification, where a name has in fact been changed. What follows is from the university's own application format, as last updated in July 2025. Read the current one before you apply. For the state's open university, read Uttarakhand Open University degree name correction.
What Is the University, and Who Are Its Students?
- What it is. A central university, with its seat at Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal.
- Where it teaches. At its own campuses, and through colleges affiliated to it.
- Who its students are. Regular students, and private candidates who sit its examinations.
- What identifies a student. A roll number and an enrolment number, with the course, the year of passing and the campus or college.
- Who decides a correction. The university's examination section, on an application.
A degree is issued by the university and nobody else. A college can forward a request and vouch for its own register. It cannot change what a marksheet says.
What Does the University's Form Say?
From the university's application format for a degree, provisional certificate, migration, transcript, correction, verification and duplicate, marked as last updated in July 2025.
| Point | What the form says |
|---|---|
| The name | As per the final year marksheet, in English capital letters and in Hindi |
| Parents' names | The father's and the mother's, each in capital letters and in Hindi |
| Hindi | Writing the student's name and the parents' names in Hindi is mandatory for a degree application |
| A correction | For a correction in a certificate or marksheet, the original copy is to be submitted along with an affidavit, asked for only for a correction in names, with other documents |
| The fee | Listed for a correction in a marksheet and for a correction of a degree, each marked as after one year |
| Where it goes | To the assistant registrar for examinations, by speed post or courier, or as scans to the email address given for that kind of request |
| Time | A minimum of three weeks from receipt of an application complete in all respects |
| Care | An incomplete or incorrect application is rejected. A separate application is made for each certificate |
Few universities set this out so plainly. The fourth row is the whole of the rule for this page: the original, an affidavit and supporting papers.
Where Does the Name Come From?
- The class 10 and class 12 certificates fix the name and the date of birth.
- The admission form at the campus or college, or the private candidate's examination form, carries the name to the university.
- The enrolment is made in that name, with a number.
- Each examination form repeats it.
- Each marksheet is printed from the university's record.
- The degree application is filled by the student, in the name on the final year marksheet.
- The degree is printed from that application and the record, in English and in Hindi.
The form's own wording shows the dependence. The degree follows the final year marksheet. A slip on that marksheet becomes a slip on the degree unless it is corrected in between.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
A slip in a name
- The student's or a parent's name on a marksheet or the degree differs from class 10
- A spelling, a missing surname or a wrong Hindi form
- A correction, on the form, with the original and an affidavit
Marksheets that differ from one another
- The first year reads one way and the final year another
- The degree will follow the final year
- Correct the odd marksheet before applying for the degree
A changed name
- The student married or changed a name after passing
- The degree is right for the name at the time
- Not a slip. Linked by the marriage certificate, or by a Gazette for a change by choice
The form speaks of a correction. That is the first two kinds. A former student who wants a degree reissued in a name taken years later is asking for something else, and should ask the university before sending originals.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A marksheet has a spelling slip in your name | The form, with the original marksheet and an affidavit | No |
| The father's name or the mother's name is wrong | The same | No |
| The Hindi spelling is wrong on the degree | The same, stating the Hindi form in writing | No |
| Two marksheets differ from each other | Correct the odd one before the degree application | No |
| The degree has not been taken yet | A degree application, in the name on the final year marksheet | No |
| Aadhaar differs from the university's papers and class 10 | Correct Aadhaar | No |
| A married surname taken after the degree | No correction. Keep the marriage certificate with the degree | No |
| The name was changed by choice after the degree | Gazette, shown with the degree. Ask the university about reissue | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. A slip is settled on an affidavit, which the form itself names.
How Do You Apply for a Correction?
These steps follow the university's form. Read its current version first.
Step 1: Read the marksheet or degree against your class 10 certificate
Your name, your father's name, your mother's name and the date of birth, in English and in Hindi.
Step 2: Download the university's application format
One form covers a degree, a correction, a duplicate and the rest.
Step 3: Fill it carefully, and completely
The form says an incomplete or incorrect application is rejected.
Step 4: Make the affidavit, for a correction in a name
The form asks for one with the original.
Step 5: Attach the original marksheet or certificate, and your supporting papers
Keep photocopies of everything you send.
Step 6: Pay the fee listed for a correction
Through the university's payment link or as the form says. Keep the receipt.
Step 7: Send it to the examination section
By speed post or courier, or as scans to the email address the form gives for that request.
Step 8: Allow the time the form states, and follow up
It speaks of at least three weeks from a complete application.
What About the Original, and the Affidavit?
- The form asks for the original marksheet or certificate to be submitted. The university takes back the paper it is replacing.
- Before posting an original, take certified photocopies, and note the roll number, the enrolment number and the serial number printed on it.
- The affidavit is asked for only where the correction is in a name.
- It should say who you are, give the name as printed and the name as it should read, and state that both refer to you. It is sworn before a notary.
- The "other documents" are the papers that prove the right spelling: the class 10 certificate above all, with class 12 and an identity paper.
- For a parent's name, add a paper that carries it: your class 10 certificate, or the parent's own identity paper.
An affidavit of this kind is a statement, not a change of name. Read name change affidavit and name spelling correction affidavit.
Why Are Names Needed in Hindi?
- The form asks for the student's name in English capitals and in Hindi, and the same for both parents.
- It adds, in both languages, that writing these names in Hindi is mandatory for a degree application.
- So the degree carries three names in two scripts. That is six chances of a slip.
- The Hindi form of a name is rarely settled by an identity paper. Take it from a Hindi-medium school certificate, or from how the family has always written it.
- Write it the same way on every form. A long vowel in one place and a short one in another is a mismatch.
- The form also asks for subjects and thesis titles in both languages. Copy those from the marksheets.
A degree with a wrong Hindi line is corrected in the same way as any other slip.
What About Campuses, Colleges and Older Students?
- The form asks for the name of the campus or college, and whether the course was passed as a regular or a private candidate.
- A current student can ask the campus or college office to check its register and forward the request.
- A former student applies to the university directly, by post or by email, as the form describes.
- The affiliation of colleges in the region has changed over the years. Apply to the university whose name is printed on your marksheet.
- Older records were kept by hand. A degree from decades ago takes longer to trace, and the form's advice to apply well in advance applies with more force.
- The form mentions an online portal for students enrolled from 2015-16 onwards. Earlier students use the paper form.
Read B.Ed degree name correction for a professional course taken through an affiliated college.
How Long Does It Take, and When Should You Apply?
- The form says the process takes a minimum of three weeks from the date a complete application is received.
- It advises all candidates to apply well in advance, since verifying records takes considerable time.
- It says the university is not responsible for postal delay or loss.
- The fee for a correction is marked "after one year". Ask the examination section what that means for a slip noticed sooner.
- A recruitment gives a few weeks between a result and verification. That is not enough to start from nothing.
- The best time is the week a marksheet arrives. The next best is today.
Keep the fee receipt, the postal receipt and a copy of the whole application. They are your only proof while the original is away.
What About Migration, Verification and Where the Degree Is Read?
- Migration. A migration certificate is a separate request on the same form. It carries the name as the university holds it.
- Verification. The form lists verification for Government bodies, aided colleges and private institutions as separate services.
- Recruitment. A commission or a department reads the degree with every earlier certificate, and may ask the university to confirm it.
- Further study. Another university reads it at admission.
- Abroad. A transcript is asked for by foreign universities and agencies, and is issued in the name on record.
A verification reply comes from the university's record. Where the record and your degree agree and your identity paper does not, the fault is not the university's to cure. Read migration certificate name correction and name mismatch at document verification.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
Use this where your name has in fact been changed by choice, so that the degree is right for a name you no longer use. It does nothing for a slip, which the university corrects on an affidavit.
Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed
A slip against your certificates is corrected by the university on an affidavit.
Step 2: Ask the university how it treats a changed name
A correction puts right a slip. A name changed after the degree is usually shown by a Gazette kept beside it.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the class 10 certificate
Letter by letter.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then carry the Gazette with your degree
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Update Aadhaar, and show the Gazette wherever the degree is read.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
This is a central university, and its graduates work everywhere. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.
Step 1: Remember that this is a central university
And that its degree is read across the country.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, PAN and a post in another state
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Students Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Applying for the degree on a wrong final year marksheet | Correct the marksheet first |
| Sending the original without keeping a copy | Photocopy it, and note its numbers |
| Leaving out the affidavit for a name | The form asks for it |
| Filling the form incompletely | The form says such applications are rejected |
| Putting two requests on one application | A separate application for each |
| Writing the Hindi names carelessly | They are printed on the degree |
| Applying a week before a verification | Allow three weeks at the least |
| Getting a Gazette for a spelling slip | The form asks for an affidavit |
| Writing on a marksheet by hand | Never. Ask for a corrected one |
A typical case we handle: a man from Chamoli graduated from an affiliated college in 2011 and never took his degree. In 2026 a recruitment asked for it. His final year marksheet read "Mahendra Singh Rana, son of Bachan Singh". His class 10 certificate read "son of Bachan Singh Rana". His brother asked us about a Gazette. That was the wrong paper, since nobody's name had been changed. He sent the university's form for a correction with the original marksheet, an affidavit and his class 10 certificate, and then a separate application for the degree. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
