For the eligibility test and for recruitment.

• Admission to the course rests on a bachelor's or a master's degree. The university reads it for eligibility and for the name.
• That degree may be from a different university, or from an open university, in a slightly different form of the name.
• The new university will not correct another's paper. It will only ask why the two differ.
• Where the earlier degree is the paper that is wrong, it is corrected by the university that issued it, on the class 10 certificate.
• Do that before applying for the entrance. A teacher's file is read in order, from class 10 upward, and a break in the middle is noticed.
• A migration certificate from the earlier university is asked for at admission. It carries the name as that university holds it.

• A degree alone does not make a candidate eligible for a school post. A teacher eligibility test has to be passed as well, the state's or the central one.
• The test has its own form, filled in a different year, on a different portal.
• Its certificate carries the candidate's name and the parents' names as typed there.
• At recruitment the test certificate and the degree are read side by side, and both against class 10.
• A candidate who has married since the degree often fills the test form in a married name. The two papers then name two women.
• Fill the test form in the degree's name. A correction afterwards lies with the body that conducted the test, within its own window.

Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed

A slip against the class 10 certificate is corrected by the university.

Step 2: Ask the university how it treats a changed name

Many issue the degree in the name on their record and expect the Gazette to be shown beside it.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the class 10 certificate

Letter by letter.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then carry the Gazette with your degrees

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Update Aadhaar, and show the Gazette at every verification.

A typical case we handle: a student at a college in Haldwani found that her first-year marksheet read "Neha Bisht, daughter of G. S. Bisht". Her class 10 certificate and graduation degree read "Neha Bisht, daughter of Govind Singh Bisht". A cousin suggested a Gazette before the degree was printed. Nobody's name had changed, so it was not the remedy. The entrance application had been typed with her father's initials. She gave the principal a written request with her certificates, the college sent it to the university, and the second-year marksheet and the degree carried his full name.
