Soban Singh Jeena University Degree Name Correction

For students and former students of the state university at Almora whose marksheet or degree carries a wrong name: what its correction form asks for, who has to countersign it, what to do about older marksheets, and how a correction differs from a change of name.

Quick answer

A Soban Singh Jeena University degree name correction is asked for on the university's application form for corrections, with your proofs attached. The form is countersigned by your college's examination in-charge and its principal, or the campus's dean and director. Have the marksheet corrected before you apply for the degree. A slip needs no Gazette.

Soban Singh Jeena University has a one-page correction form, countersigned by your college examination in-charge and principal, so correct the marksheet before the degree.

Almora was a campus of the university at Nainital for more than forty years, and became a university of its own in 2020. Colleges across four hill districts now come under it. A Soban Singh Jeena University degree name correction is a request the university has a form for. This page explains Soban Singh Jeena University degree name correction for its students and former students.

We do not deal with the university. We prepare the Gazette notification, where a name has in fact been changed. What follows is from the university's own website and its correction form. The form states no fee or time limit. For the university it was carved out of, read Kumaun University degree name correction.

What Is the University, and Who Are Its Students?

From the university's own account of itself.

  • What it is. A state university at Almora, both residential and affiliating.
  • When it began. It came into existence in August 2020, carved out of the university at Nainital, of which it had been a campus for more than four decades.
  • Which colleges. Those of Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh districts.
  • How one is admitted. Through the state's online admission portal, which the university links.
  • What identifies a student. A registration number, an enrolment number and a roll number.

It is a young university with old students. Many of the people who hold its marksheets began their course under another name on the letterhead.

What Does the Correction Form Ask For?

From the university's application form for corrections and queries, linked from the top of its home page.

What the university's application form for corrections asks a student for
FieldAs the form asks
Student's nameWith the registration number
Enrolment number and roll numberEach on its own line
Course and examination semesterThe paper the correction concerns
Father's name and mother's nameEach on its own line
Date of birth, and collegeAs on record
Correction detailsA space for the student to state what is to be corrected
AttachmentsA numbered list, filled by the student
SignaturesThe student. The dean of faculty or the college's examination in-charge. The director of the campus or the principal of the college

The form is one page. It does not say what proof to attach, what the fee is or how long it takes. It does say who has to stand behind the request: two officers of the student's own college or campus.

Where Does the Name Come From?

  1. The high school certificate fixes the name, the parents' names and the date of birth.
  2. The admission form, on the state's portal or at the college, carries them to the college.
  3. The registration and enrolment are made by the university from the college's list.
  4. Each examination form is filled every semester, on one of the university's two portals.
  5. Each marksheet is printed from that record.
  6. The degree is applied for separately, and printed from the same record.

A student of a four-year course fills eight examination forms. The name passes through a college clerk, a portal and a printer each time.

What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?

A slip in this university's record

  • A marksheet differs from the high school certificate
  • A spelling, initials, a missing surname or a wrong parent's name
  • Corrected on the university's form, through the college

A difference between old and new marksheets

  • Earlier years under the university at Nainital, later ones under this
  • Two records, made years apart
  • Each paper is corrected by the university that issued it

A changed name

  • The student married or changed a name after passing
  • The marksheets are right for the name at the time
  • Not a slip. Linked by the marriage certificate, or by a Gazette for a change by choice

The second kind belongs to this university more than most. Sort out which letterhead each marksheet carries before writing to anyone.

How Do You Apply for a Correction?

These steps follow the university's form. It states no fee, so ask the college.

Step 1: Read the marksheet against your high school certificate

Your name, your father's name, your mother's name and the date of birth.

Step 2: Download the university's application form for corrections

It is linked from the top of the university's website.

Step 3: Fill your details as the university holds them

Registration number, enrolment number, roll number, course, semester and college.

Step 4: Write the correction wanted, plainly

The entry as printed, and the entry as it should read.

Step 5: List and attach your proofs

The high school certificate first, with the marksheet in question and an identity paper.

Step 6: Sign it, and take it to your college

The form has a place for the examination in-charge or dean, and for the principal or campus director.

Step 7: See that it reaches the university's examination section

Ask the college how it is sent, and keep a dated copy.

Step 8: Collect the corrected marksheet before you apply for the degree

The degree is printed from the same record.

What About the Two Countersignatures?

  • The form ends with two signature blocks besides the student's own.
  • One is for the dean of faculty, at a campus, or the examination in-charge, at a college.
  • The other is for the director of the campus or the principal of the college.
  • So the university does not take a student's word alone. It takes the word of the institution that admitted the student.
  • The college signs from its admission register and its copy of the examination form. Take your certificates along, so its staff can compare.
  • A former student still goes back to the same college. A request from someone who left years ago takes longer to trace.

Where a college's own register carries the slip, ask it to correct that first, on your high school certificate. A college cannot sign for a spelling its own book does not show.

What About the Online Service, and Two Kinds of Student?

  • The university's site links an online service for a degree, an online migration certificate and marksheet correction, together.
  • It also carries the paper form for corrections, and a paper degree form and migration form.
  • Throughout the site, students are divided in two: those on the newer national online system for universities, and those who are not.
  • Each group has its own portal for examination forms, results and admit cards.
  • Which group you belong to depends on your course and the year you joined. Your college will tell you.
  • We did not open the online service, and could not see what it asks for or charges.

Ask the college one plain question: for my course and year, is a correction made online, on the paper form, or both? Then follow that route only.

What About Marksheets From Before 2020?

  • A student who passed at Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar or Champawat before 2020 holds marksheets of the university at Nainital.
  • A student who was midway through a course in 2020 may hold marksheets of both.
  • Each university corrects the paper it issued. The letterhead tells you which.
  • Where records of the old campus and colleges now lie is a question for the two examination sections. We did not confirm it.
  • The older university's degree page says every marksheet must carry the same name, father's name and enrolment number before a degree is applied for.
  • A degree for a course completed before 2020 was awarded by the older university.

Read Kumaun University degree name correction for that university's own instruction.

What About Applying for the Degree?

  • The university's site offers the degree through its online service, and also carries a degree form.
  • Apply after the final result, and after every marksheet reads as your high school certificate does.
  • Enter the name, the parents' names, and the registration, enrolment and roll numbers exactly as on the marksheets.
  • A degree applied for on a wrong marksheet comes back wrong, and the correction then has two papers to cover.
  • A migration certificate is a separate request, offered in the same place.
  • Take the degree soon after passing. A recruitment that asks for it will not wait.

Read migration certificate name correction.

Where Is the Degree Read?

  • Recruitment.A commission or a department reads the degree with every earlier certificate, from the high school certificate upward.
  • The forces. Many families in these districts serve in the army. A recruit's or a dependant's degree is read against service papers.
  • Teaching. The university runs the state's combined entrance for the teaching degree. Admission there rests on a graduate's degree.
  • Further study. Another university reads it at admission, with a migration certificate.
  • Verification. An employer may ask the university to confirm it. The reply comes from the university's record.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?

Use this where your name has in fact been changed by choice, so that the degree is right for a name you no longer use. It does nothing for a slip, which the university corrects on its form.

Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed

A slip against the high school certificate is corrected by the university on its form.

Step 2: Ask the university how it treats a changed name

A correction puts right a slip. A name changed after the degree is usually shown by a Gazette kept beside it.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name, and copy the old name from the high school certificate

Letter by letter.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then carry the Gazette with your degree

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Update Aadhaar, and show the Gazette wherever the degree is read.

See gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?

A state university and a state employer may accept it. A graduate who may work or study elsewhere is better served by the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Ask whoever will read the degree

A state university and a state employer may accept either.

Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, PAN and a post in another state

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Students Make?

Common mistakes with a name on a marksheet or degree of the university
MistakeWhat to do
Sending the form to the university without the college's signaturesHave both countersignatures first
Leaving the attachments list emptyList and attach your proofs
Writing "name wrong" under correction detailsWrite the entry as printed, and as it should read
Asking this university to correct an older university's marksheetEach corrects its own
Using the wrong portal for your courseAsk the college which applies
Reading only your own nameRead both parents' names and the date of birth
Applying for the degree on a wrong marksheetCorrect the marksheet first
Getting a Gazette for a spelling slipThe university has a form for that
Writing on a marksheet by handNever. Ask for a corrected one

A typical case we handle: a student at a college in Pithoragarh found that her fourth semester marksheet read "Pooja Mehta, mother's name Parwati Devi". Her high school certificate and earlier marksheets read "Parvati Mehta". A neighbour suggested a Gazette for her mother. Nobody's name had changed, so it was not the remedy. She filled the university's correction form, attached her certificate and two earlier marksheets, and had the examination in-charge and the principal sign it. The college sent it on, and the next marksheet carried the right name. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

That it began in August 2020, was carved out of the university at Nainital and covers four districts is from its own account of itself. That it offers an online service for a degree, migration and marksheet correction, and separates two groups of students, is from its home page. We did not open the online service. The form states no proof, fee or time limit, so the attachments suggested here are general guidance. Where records of earlier years lie was not confirmed.
