Temple Priest, Purohit and Temple Committee Record Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand

For teerth purohits, priests, temple staff and families holding traditional rights at Badrinath, Kedarnath and other shrines in Uttarakhand, whose name in the temple committee's records, identity cards or lists differs from Aadhaar, the family register or the bank: who corrects each record, and why a Gazette does not touch traditional rights.

Quick answer

A temple record name mismatch is a priest's, purohit's, employee's or rights holder's name in temple records differing from Aadhaar or the family register. Correct Aadhaar or the family register first where wrong, then ask the temple committee in writing to correct its record. Heirs prove the family link. A Gazette does not alter traditional rights.

A priestly family's temple committee records and Aadhaar being checked for a name mismatch at a Char Dham shrine in Uttarakhand
Temple committee lists, identity cards and season passes should carry the same name as Aadhaar and the family register.

At Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, priestly families have served pilgrims for generations, and temple staff run the shrines each season. Their names sit in committee registers, identity cards and lists of rights holders, often in old or short forms. A temple record name mismatch is such a name differing from Aadhaar. This page explains temple record name mismatch.

We do not deal with temple committees, and this subject needs no Gazette. The law is from the 2021 repeal Act. For pilgrims, read Char Dham yatra registration.

What Is Temple Administration, in Brief?

  • Badrinath and Kedarnath. Managed by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee.
  • The law. The 1939 temple Act, revived in 2021.
  • Other shrines. Run by their own local bodies.
  • Who is recorded. Priests, staff and traditional rights holders.
  • Why names matter. Duties, pay, passes and inheritance of rights.

The committee keeps its own records. It corrects them too.

What Is Published?

From the 2021 repeal Act, as published by the High Court of Uttarakhand, and reports of 2021 and 2022.

An old or short form

  • A list written generations ago
  • Aadhaar has the full name
  • The committee corrects it

A staff record

  • A service book with a slip
  • Pay or pension affected
  • The committee as employer

A right passing on

  • A father's name in the list
  • The son or daughter claims
  • The link proved

The first two are records. The third may be a question of right. Know which.

How Do You Put It Right?

This is the general method. Each committee has its own procedure.

Step 1: Read your name in the temple committee's or local body's record

Identity card, list or register.

Step 2: Put your Aadhaar and the family register beside it

They prove who you are and your family.

Step 3: Correct Aadhaar or the family register where they are wrong

At their own offices.

Step 4: Ask the temple committee or local body to correct its record

In writing, with your papers.

Step 5: For a family right passing to an heir, prove the link

Death certificate and legal heir papers.

Step 6: Use the same name for yatra season passes

Police and administration check them.

Step 7: Keep payments in your own bank account

Salaries, honoraria or dues.

Step 8: Keep copies of every record

For disputes and succession.

What About Priests and Purohits?

  • Teerth purohits serve pilgrims, often by family tradition.
  • Their names may be in committee lists and identity cards.
  • Old lists may carry short or family names.
  • Ask the committee to correct the list to your Aadhaar name.
  • Give your family register as proof of family.
  • Keep a copy of the corrected record.

Read family register.

What About Temple Staff?

  • The committee employs staff at the shrines and offices.
  • Their service records follow the committee's rules.
  • A slip in a service book affects pay and pension.
  • Apply to the committee, as employer, with your papers.
  • Keep pay in your own account in the same name.
  • Records made in the board's time may continue under the revived Act.

Read bank records.

What About Traditional Rights and Heirs?

  • Some families hold long-standing rights at the shrines.
  • When a holder dies, the right may pass by custom and law.
  • Heirs prove the link with death and legal heir papers.
  • Names in old lists may differ from heirs' Aadhaar.
  • Disputes over who holds a right are for the committee and the courts.
  • A Gazette does not decide or change a right.

Read legal heir certificate and succession certificate.

What About the Yatra Season?

  • During the yatra, administrations may issue passes to priests and staff.
  • Passes are checked against identity papers.
  • Use your Aadhaar name on the pass.
  • Pilgrims register separately.
  • Local guides and porters have their own registrations.
  • Keep your papers on you at the shrine.

Read guide and trekking registration.

What About Other Shrines?

  • Gangotri, Yamunotri and many other temples have their own local bodies.
  • Haridwar's pandas keep their own family registers of pilgrims.
  • Each body corrects its own records.
  • The same rule applies: follow Aadhaar.
  • Keep proof of family with the family register.
  • Ask the body for its procedure.

Read Char Dham registration.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?

Not for a short form, and never for a right. Only where a person has changed a name by choice.

Step 1: Confirm that your name has in fact changed

A short form in a temple list is not a change of name.

Step 2: Remember that traditional rights are not changed by a Gazette

A Gazette records only your own name.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The spelling for Aadhaar and the temple record.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and the temple record.

See gazette name change in Uttarakhand.

Which Gazette Should You Use?

The temple law is the state's, Aadhaar and the bank central. The Gazette of India serves both.

Step 1: Remember whose law this is

The 1939 temple Act, revived by the state in 2021.

Step 2: Remember what else is read

Aadhaar and the bank, which are central.

Step 3: Either Gazette may serve a state record

A state notice may suit it.

Step 4: Prefer the Gazette of India if Aadhaar and the bank must change

It serves both.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

For the difference between the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.

A typical case we handle: a young purohit from a family that has served at a Char Dham shrine for generations found the committee's list still named his late father by a short form, with no entry for him. His Aadhaar and the family register named both correctly. He asked us about a Gazette. None was needed. He wrote to the committee with the death certificate, legal heir papers, family register and his Aadhaar. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

What is a lawyer's or committee's work, not ours

Deciding who holds a traditional right, and any dispute over it.

When you do not need us

For a committee list, a service record or a pass. The committee and the offices settle those. We are useful only where a person has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.
