Aadhaar Name Update Rejected in Uttarakhand: The Reasons, and What to Do
For people whose request to update the name on Aadhaar came back rejected: the reasons the identity authority gives, how to tell which one is yours, when the cure is a better identity paper and when it is a Gazette notification, and why applying again with the same papers does not help.
When an Aadhaar name update is rejected, read the reason on the status page before doing anything. Common causes are a paper that does not show the name asked for, a new name asked for without a Gazette notification, and the update limit. Change what was wrong, then apply again once.

A person waits at an Aadhaar centre, pays the fee, and some days later a message says the request was rejected. The natural response is to go back and try again. That seldom works, since the same papers meet the same rule. An Aadhaar name update rejected once will be rejected twice unless something changes. This page explains why an Aadhaar name update is rejected, and what to change.
We do not update Aadhaar. The reasons for rejection, and what to do, are from the identity authority's own published answers. The rules on small and large changes are from news reports of its revised procedure, as set out on our page on name change in Aadhaar card.
What Is a Rejection, in Brief?
- Who rejects. The identity authority, after the centre has sent your request and papers to it.
- Not the operator. The operator only enters and sends.
- How you learn. By a message, and on the status page for your request.
- What it leaves. Aadhaar as it was. Nothing has changed.
- What it is not. A wrong update. That is a request that went through with a mistake in it.
A rejection is a decision on papers, made by someone who never saw you. It tells you the papers did not support the request. That is all it tells you, and it is enough to act on.
What Does the Authority Say?
The first three rows are from the identity authority's published answers. The last three are from news reports of its revised procedure for name updates, in effect from September 2026.
| Point | What is said |
|---|---|
| Reasons | Document mismatches, discrepancy in the information provided, operator errors, invalid documents, exceeding the permissible update limit, or policy non-compliance |
| What to do | Check the status of the request on the portal. Then update again using the correct documents, within the permissible limits |
| For more | Contact the helpline at 1947, or write to its help address |
| Small changes | As reported: made on a valid proof of identity document |
| A new name | As reported: a complete change of name needs a Gazette notification |
| Marriage, divorce and typing errors | As reported: each has its own route, with a prescribed affidavit |
Six reasons, in the authority's list. For a name, they come down to four things a person can check at home, set out below.
Which Four Things Are Compared?
| Thing | Compared with | A rejection follows when |
|---|---|---|
| The name you asked for | The name on the paper you gave | They are not the same, letter for letter |
| The size of the change | The kind of paper given | A new name is asked for on a paper meant for small corrections |
| The paper itself | The authority's list of valid papers | It is not on the list, is unclear, or is not yours |
| Your update history | The limit of two name updates | Both have been used |
Read down the last column with your own request in front of you. One of the four will usually be plain.
What Kinds of Rejection Are There?
The paper does not show the name
- You asked for "Pooja Rawat" on a paper that says "Puja Rawat"
- Or on a paper with no surname
- A paper in the right form
Too large a change for the paper
- A different first name, or a wholly new name
- Asked for on an identity paper or an affidavit
- A Gazette notification
The paper is not accepted
- Not on the list, expired, unreadable, or in another person's name
- Or a photocopy where an original was needed
- A valid paper, clearly scanned
The limit
- Two name updates already used
- The system refuses before anyone reads the paper
- The exception route, through the regional office
The second is where a Gazette comes in. The first and third need a better paper, and a Gazette would be wasted on them.
Which Case Is Yours?
| What you asked for | Likely reason | Cure | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A spelling, on a paper that spells it another way | Mismatch | A paper in the spelling you want | No |
| An initial expanded, on a paper with the initial | Mismatch | A paper with the full name | No |
| A married surname, on a husband's identity paper | Wrong paper | The marriage certificate, on that route | No |
| A new first name, on a school certificate | Too large a change | A Gazette notification | Yes |
| A new name, on an affidavit alone | Too large a change | A Gazette notification | Yes |
| A new name with a Gazette that spells it differently | Mismatch | See below. Perhaps a corrected notice | You have one |
| Any name, a third time | The limit | The exception route | Yes |
| The right name, entered wrongly by the operator | Not a rejection | The route for data-entry errors | No |
A Gazette cures three of the eight. For the others it would be money spent on the wrong paper.
What Should You Do, in Order?
This follows the identity authority's answer: check the status, then update again with the correct documents.
Step 1: Check the status of the request, and read the reason given
On the identity authority's portal, with the number on your slip.
Step 2: Do not submit the same request again
The same papers get the same answer.
Step 3: Work out which kind of rejection it is
The paper, the size of the change, the limit, or the entry at the centre.
Step 4: Lay the name you asked for beside the paper you gave
Letter by letter. The paper has to show the name in exactly the form you want.
Step 5: Decide if your change is a small correction or a new name
A new name needs a Gazette notification. A small correction needs an identity paper.
Step 6: Get the right paper before going back
A valid identity paper in the right spelling, or the Gazette, or the marriage certificate.
Step 7: Apply again once, and read the operator's screen before confirming
In both scripts.
Step 8: If you believe the rejection was wrong, call 1947 or write
With the enrolment number, the reason shown and your papers.
What If the Paper Does Not Show the Name?
- For a small change, the authority asks for a valid proof of identity.
- That paper has to carry the name in the very form you are asking for.
- A person who wants "Kumar" in place of "Kr" needs a paper that says "Kumar".
- Where no paper of yours has the form you want, Aadhaar cannot be the first to carry it.
- Then correct another record first, such as PAN or a voter card, on what it accepts, and bring that to Aadhaar.
- Or ask if the spelling you want is in truth a new name, which is the next section.
Read name spelling correction and short name and full name difference.
What If It Was a New Name, Asked For as a Correction?
- As reported, the revised procedure sorts name updates into small changes and large ones.
- A complete change of name, or one that amounts to a different identity, is a large one, and needs a Gazette notification.
- People ask for it as if it were a correction, with a school paper or a notary's affidavit, and are refused.
- The refusal follows from the rule. Those papers show an old name, or a statement. They do not show a published change.
- A new first name, a first name and surname both changed, or a spelling that now sounds different, are likely to be treated as large.
- Where the line falls in a borderline case is for the authority. Ask the helpline before paying for a Gazette.

What If It Was Rejected Even With a Gazette?
- A Gazette notification is a paper like any other. It is compared with the request.
- The old name in the notice should be the name on your Aadhaar now.
- The new name in the notice should be the name typed at the centre, letter for letter.
- Our page on a change of surname notes that the address in the notice should match Aadhaar. Check that too.
- A supporting paper for the old name is also asked for, as the authority's answer on the limit shows.
- Where the notice itself carries a slip, it is put right by a correction notice, not by a fresh change of name.
Read Gazette corrigendum and why Gazette files are returned.
What If the Reason Is the Limit?
- A name can be updated twice in a lifetime.
- A third request is refused by the system as limit exceeded.
- That is not a judgment on your papers. Nobody has read them.
- A further update is taken up only as an exception, by the regional office, and the authority asks for a Gazette notification.
- The steps are set out on our page for that case.
- Check your update history before any request. Many people do not know they have used both.
What If the Rejection Seems Wrong?
- A valid paper, in the right name, for a small change, within the limit, should not be refused.
- Where it is, the scan may have been unreadable, or the operator may have chosen the wrong kind of update.
- Ask the centre to show you what was uploaded.
- Call 1947 with the enrolment number, and ask for the reason in words.
- Write to the authority's help address with the slip, the reason shown and your papers.
- The authority's regional office is the next step, where the helpline does not settle it.
Keep every slip. Read what to do when an application is pending.
How Do You Get the Gazette?
Only where the rejection shows that your change is a new name. For a mismatch or an invalid paper, a Gazette is not the cure.
Step 1: Confirm that your change is a new name, and not a small correction
A small correction rejected for a poor paper needs a better paper, not a Gazette.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The form you will ask for at the centre, letter for letter.
Step 3: Give the address that is on your Aadhaar
So that the notice and Aadhaar agree.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then apply again at the centre with the notice
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
After one rejection, do not invite another. Use the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Remember who decides
The identity authority, a central body.
Step 2: Do not risk a second rejection on the choice of Gazette
Use the one least likely to be questioned.
Step 3: Use the Gazette of India
Our Aadhaar page explains what is known about a state Gazette there.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Applying again with the same papers | Change what was wrong first |
| Not reading the reason | Check the status page |
| Blaming the operator | The authority decides, on the papers |
| Getting a Gazette for a spelling mismatch | A paper in the right spelling |
| Asking for a new name on an affidavit | A Gazette notification |
| A Gazette in one spelling, a request in another | Letter for letter the same |
| Not checking the update history | Count the updates used |
| Throwing away the slip | Keep it. The number is needed |
| Paying someone to "push" the request | Nobody can |
A typical case we handle: a man in Kashipur asked an Aadhaar centre to change "Sonu Kumar" to "Saurabh Kumar", on his class 10 certificate, which carried the second name. The request was rejected, and he tried twice more. He then asked us if the centre was at fault. It was not. He had been Sonu on Aadhaar for years, and Saurabh was treated as a different first name. We told him so. The change was published in the Gazette of India, and he applied once more with the notice and his class 10 certificate. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a mismatch, an invalid paper, a marriage surname and a typing error. A better paper and one more visit settle those. We are useful where the rejection shows that your change is a new name, and a Gazette notification is the paper that is missing.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Send a photo of your Aadhaar, the name you asked for and the paper you gave on WhatsApp, and we will tell you which of the four reasons it is likely to be.
People Also Ask About a Rejected Aadhaar Update
Why was my Aadhaar name update rejected?
Usually a paper mismatch, too large a change, or the limit.
What do I do after an Aadhaar update is rejected?
Read the reason, change what was wrong, apply again once.
Is a gazette needed after an Aadhaar name update is rejected?
Only where the change is a new name.
Can I apply again after a rejection?
Yes, with the correct documents.
How do I know the reason for rejection?
On the status page, or from the helpline.
Does the operator reject Aadhaar updates?
No. The identity authority does.
What does an Aadhaar name update cost?
UIDAI's fee chart gives Rs 75 for a demographic update, such as a name, done on its own, and nothing extra when it is done at the same time as a biometric update. A rejected request means paying again, so get the papers right first.
Is a document update the same as a name update?
No. UIDAI describes a document update as submitting proofs of identity and address in support of the name already enrolled. It does not change the name. A name change is a separate demographic update.
Is the online document update free?
Reports say UIDAI's office memorandum of 13 May 2026 kept the online document update on myAadhaar free from 15 June 2026 to 14 June 2027, while the same service at a centre costs Rs 75.
How long does UIDAI take to process an update?
Reports say UIDAI clears about nine in ten update requests within 30 days, with 90 days as the outer limit. Do not file a second request while the first is still open.
What is the URN on my slip?
The 14-digit Update Request Number given when an update is submitted. Use it on the status page to see whether the request was accepted or rejected, and the reason.
Can I update my name online instead of at a centre?
Reports say UIDAI has opened more demographic updates online through myAadhaar and its new app since November 2025. Check what the portal allows for a name today, and whether your change needs a Gazette first.

The reasons for rejection, the advice to check the status and update again with the correct documents within the limits, and the helpline, are from the Unique Identification Authority of India's published answers. That name updates are sorted into small and large changes, that a complete change of name needs a Gazette notification, and the separate routes for marriage, divorce and data-entry errors, are from news reports of the authority's revised procedure in effect from September 2026, as set out on our page on Aadhaar. We did not read that procedure. We could not confirm if a rejected request counts against the limit, or if the fee is returned. The four kinds of rejection are our own sorting of the authority's reasons. The identity authority is the authority.

A Rejected Aadhaar Update: The Short Version
A rejection means the papers did not support the request. Read the reason on the status page. If the paper did not show the name you asked for, get one that does. If you asked for a new name as if it were a correction, a Gazette notification is the missing paper. If the limit is used, the regional office decides. Do not apply again with the same papers. Change what was wrong, and apply once.
