Amarnath Yatra Registration Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For pilgrims from Uttarakhand registering for the Amarnath Yatra, whose health certificate and Aadhaar do not carry one name or age, or whose Aadhaar will not authenticate: how registration is done, what the bank checks, who corrects each paper, and why the date of birth matters as much as the name.
An Amarnath Yatra registration name mismatch is avoided by settling Aadhaar first, since registration is done on it by fingerprint. Then have the compulsory health certificate written from Aadhaar, with the same name and age. A slip on the certificate is corrected by the doctor who issued it. No Gazette is needed.

Each summer pilgrims from Dehradun, Haridwar and the hill districts travel north for the Amarnath Yatra. Registration for it opens months ahead, at bank branches and online, and rests on two things: Aadhaar, and a doctor's certificate. An Amarnath Yatra registration name mismatch is those two not agreeing at the bank's counter. This page explains Amarnath Yatra registration name mismatch for pilgrims from Uttarakhand.
We do not register pilgrims, and this subject needs no Gazette. How registration is done is from the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board's own guidelines and reports by the public broadcaster. Each season has its own dates. For the state's own yatra, read Char Dham Yatra registration name mismatch.
What Is the Registration, in Brief?
- Who runs it. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
- Where. At designated branches of certain banks across the country, and online.
- On what. Aadhaar, checked by fingerprint, and a compulsory health certificate.
- What is issued. A yatra permit for a route and a date, and later a travel card.
- How many. A fixed daily quota for each route at each branch, first come first served.
A pilgrim from Uttarakhand registers at a branch here, weeks or months before travelling. Whatever is settled at that counter is what the gates in the mountains will read.
What Do the Board's Guidelines Say?
From the shrine board's guidelines for advance registration for the 2024 and 2026 yatras, and the public broadcaster's reports of the 2026 season. Read the present season's guidelines.
| Point | What the guidelines say |
|---|---|
| Authentication | Advance registration through designated banks is done on a real time basis after Aadhaar based biometric eKYC authentication |
| Health certificate | Every pilgrim submits a valid compulsory health certificate on the prescribed format, issued by an authorised doctor on or after a date set for the season |
| Age | No pilgrim below 13 or above 70, and no woman more than six weeks pregnant |
| The permit | System-generated by the branch, once the certificate is found in order, for a route and a date |
| The travel card | Collected after biometric eKYC authentication at centres set up for the yatra. No one passes the access gates without it |
| Groups | A facility for five or more, with each form carrying an Aadhaar number and each member's original certificate |
The permit is generated by a system after the Aadhaar check. Expect the name on it to be the name on Aadhaar, for better or worse.
What Does the Counter Compare?
| Paper | Written by | Who corrects it |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar's record | The identity authority | An Aadhaar centre, not in a day |
| The health certificate | An authorised doctor, by hand | The same doctor, or a fresh certificate |
| The yatra permit | The system, from Aadhaar | It follows Aadhaar |
| The travel card | The system, after a second fingerprint check | It follows Aadhaar |
Only one paper here is written by a human hand at the last moment, and it is the certificate. That is where nearly every mismatch enters.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The certificate differs from Aadhaar
- A short name, an initial, a rounded age
- Written as the pilgrim said it
- Corrected by the doctor, before the bank
Aadhaar itself is wrong or stale
- A wrong date of birth, an old photograph, a spelling
- The permit will copy it
- Corrected at an Aadhaar centre, weeks ahead
Aadhaar will not authenticate
- Worn fingerprints, common in older pilgrims and those who work with their hands
- Or biometrics never updated since childhood
- A biometric update at an Aadhaar centre
The third is not a name mismatch in the usual sense, but it has the same effect. The record cannot be tied to the person standing at the counter.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The certificate has a short name or a slip | The doctor corrects it, or a fresh certificate | No |
| The certificate's age differs from Aadhaar | The same | No |
| Aadhaar has a spelling slip | Correct Aadhaar before the season | No |
| Aadhaar's date of birth is wrong | Correct the date of birth on proof | No |
| Fingerprints fail | A biometric update at an Aadhaar centre | No |
| The certificate is from a doctor not on the list | A fresh one from an authorised doctor | No |
| A married name in use, a maiden name on Aadhaar | Register in the Aadhaar name | No |
| The pilgrim changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, then register | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows, and it is finished long before a season, not during one.
How Do You Prepare?
This is the general method. Begin in the winter before the yatra.
Step 1: Read your Aadhaar: the name, the date of birth and the photograph
Registration is done on it, by fingerprint. What it says is what the permit will say.
Step 2: See that your fingerprints work on Aadhaar
Try them at a bank or a ration shop. An elder's prints often fail.
Step 3: Correct or update Aadhaar first, if anything is wrong
At an Aadhaar centre, weeks before registration opens.
Step 4: Take the health certificate form to an authorised doctor
From the shrine board's list for your state, on its own format.
Step 5: Hand the doctor your Aadhaar, and ask for the name in capitals
With the age as Aadhaar gives it.
Step 6: Read the certificate before leaving the clinic
Name, age, the doctor's name, registration number, stamp and the date.
Step 7: Register at a designated bank branch or online, with the certificate
And read the permit: your name, the route and the date.
Step 8: Carry Aadhaar, the permit and the certificate, and collect the travel card
The card is given after your fingerprint is checked again.
Why Aadhaar, and the Fingerprint?
- The guidelines say registration is done after Aadhaar based biometric eKYC authentication.
- The pilgrim puts a finger on a device at the bank. The system fetches the name, date of birth and photograph from Aadhaar.
- The permit is generated by the system after that check.
- So a spelling the pilgrim has lived with on Aadhaar for years will be on the permit too.
- And a pilgrim whose finger is not recognised cannot be registered that way at all.
- Both are put right at an Aadhaar centre, and neither in an afternoon. Look in the winter.
Read name change in Aadhaar card and lost or no documents to prove your name, for those with few papers to correct Aadhaar on.
What About the Health Certificate?
- The board publishes a format, and a list of doctors and institutions authorised to issue it in each state.
- A certificate from any other doctor, or on another form, is not accepted.
- It has to be dated on or after the day the board sets for the season.
- The doctor writes the pilgrim's name and age by hand. Give him the Aadhaar card to copy from.
- The branch checks the certificate before it issues a permit. A name or age that differs from Aadhaar is a reason to send you back.
- A correction is made and countersigned by the same doctor. A name altered by another pen is worse than a wrong one.
Read hospital discharge summary and medical records name correction, on a doctor's papers generally.
Why Does the Date of Birth Matter?
- The guidelines bar pilgrims below 13 and above 70.
- Age is taken from Aadhaar's date of birth.
- Many older people's Aadhaar carries a date guessed at enrolment, or only a year.
- A date a year or two out can put a fit pilgrim of 69 over the line, or the reverse.
- Where Aadhaar is wrong, correct it on a birth or school certificate. Aadhaar allows that far less freely than a name.
- Do not seek a younger date to qualify. The limit exists because the route is high and hard.
Read date of birth correction and Senior Citizens Savings Scheme name correction, on other places an elder's date of birth is read.
What About the Permit and the Travel Card?
- The permit names the pilgrim, the route and the date of travel.
- It is good for that route and that date. A different day needs a different permit.
- Before starting, each registered pilgrim collects a travel card at a centre set up for the yatra.
- The guidelines say the card is given after biometric eKYC authentication. So the fingerprint is checked a second time, far from home.
- Carry the Aadhaar card, the permit and the original health certificate together.
- A finger that worked at the bank in spring and fails at the centre in summer is a real risk for elders. Ask at the bank what is done then.
Read inner line permit name mismatch, on another permit read at check posts.
What About Groups and Elders?
- Pilgrims often go in a group from one town, organised by a committee or a temple.
- The board has a group facility, with a form for each member carrying an Aadhaar number, and each member's original certificate.
- An organiser fills many forms at a sitting. Give him a copy of your Aadhaar, not your name on a list.
- The eldest in a group are the likeliest to have a wrong date of birth or weak fingerprints.
- Check their Aadhaar first, and early. One member who cannot register changes the whole group's plan.
- Each member's certificate is his own, from an authorised doctor. One doctor's signature does not cover a busload.
We did not confirm the present season's group procedure. The board's site has it.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Nowhere in a yatra. It comes in only where a person has changed a name by choice and wants Aadhaar to carry it. Registration is then done in the new name.
Step 1: Confirm that your own name has in fact changed
A doctor's short form on a certificate is not a change of name.
Step 2: Do not think of a Gazette for a yatra
It takes weeks. A health certificate is good for one season.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Register for a later yatra in the name Aadhaar then carries.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
This yatra runs on Aadhaar, and Aadhaar recognises the Gazette of India for a change of name.
Step 1: Remember which paper this yatra runs on
Aadhaar, checked by fingerprint.
Step 2: Remember what Aadhaar recognises for a change of name
The Gazette of India.
Step 3: Use the Gazette of India
A state notice is not the paper for Aadhaar.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Pilgrims Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Looking at Aadhaar the week registration opens | Look in the winter |
| Telling the doctor your name aloud | Hand him the Aadhaar card |
| A certificate from the family doctor | One from the board's list |
| A certificate dated before the season's date | Dated on or after it |
| Never testing an elder's fingerprints | Test them at a bank first |
| Ignoring a wrong date of birth | Correct it on proof |
| Correcting the certificate yourself | The doctor corrects and signs |
| Leaving Aadhaar at home on the journey | Carry the card |
| Paying an agent for a "guaranteed" permit | Register at a designated branch or the board's site |
A typical case we handle: a man in Haridwar took his mother to a designated bank branch to register. Her health certificate read "Smt Shanti Devi, 66". Her Aadhaar read "Shanti" and gave a year of birth that made her 71. The branch could not register her. He asked us if a Gazette could correct her age. It could not, and no name had been changed. Her school leaving paper showed the true date. Aadhaar was corrected on it over the following weeks, and she registered the next season. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For every registration. The Aadhaar centre and the doctor settle the papers. We are useful only where a person has changed a name by choice and Aadhaar needs a Gazette notification.

Registration is done by the bank branch, and the certificate by the doctor. That advance registration is done after Aadhaar based biometric eKYC authentication, that every pilgrim submits a compulsory health certificate on the prescribed format from an authorised doctor, the age limits, the system-generated permit, the travel card collected after biometric authentication and the group facility, are from the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board's guidelines for the 2024 and 2026 yatras. That the permit mentions the route and date, and the daily quota, are from the public broadcaster's reports of the 2026 season. We did not read the present season's guidelines, and could not confirm what a branch does where fingerprints fail or how the online route authenticates. How a certificate comes to differ from Aadhaar is general knowledge. The shrine board and the designated bank branch are the authority.

Names in Amarnath Yatra Registration: The Short Version
Registration for the Amarnath Yatra is done on Aadhaar, by fingerprint, with a compulsory health certificate from a doctor on the shrine board's list. The permit copies Aadhaar. So see in the winter that Aadhaar's name and date of birth are right and that fingerprints work. Have the doctor write the certificate from the Aadhaar card. Pilgrims below 13 and above 70 are not registered. Carry Aadhaar, the permit and the certificate, and collect the travel card.
No Gazette is needed for a yatra. If your Aadhaar and other papers disagree, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
